Sycamore Island can only be reached by your own canoe, kayak, or rowboat; watercraft is not provided.

Acquired and protected by Allegheny Land Trust in 2008, Sycamore Island is a floodplain forest with a ranking of “high significance” within the Allegheny River Biological Diversity Area (BDA) Natural Heritage Area. Before the island was protected by ALT, the island had periodic interludes of recognition and appreciation by humans as a natural refuge. In 1936, both Sycamore Island and Nine Mile Island were leased from the Pennsylvania Railroad by the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, making these islands the first bird sanctuaries in the Pittsburgh region. The Harbor Isle Boat Club was in existence on the island during the late 1960s but was later abandoned leaving behind several significant features; including a barge that remains embedded in the sand at the island’s southern tip, a partially installed swimming pool, docking platform, and a series of offshore pilings in the back channel.

This is an area of many documentaries of paranormal over the years. From the Kecksburg UFO incident in the 1960s to the countless Sasquatch sightings since, Chestnut Ridge has spawned many documentaries and research for the paranormal.
This our first year so there's a good bit of underbrush. feel free to bring a bow saw for your small fires and clear as much underneath would like. It's all appreciated to the greater good of nature.
This camp is not easily accessible and the flow of Jacob's Creek could keep you from accessing it. You must cross Jacob's Creek by foot to access your site. Once there, you'll be transformed back in time where primitive rules and absolute tranquility abounds. Area 51 Landing is totally surrounded by state game lands so feel free to wonder and immerse yourself into a clear mountain stream surrounded by wilderness.
Just a few kilometers upstream lies the remains of the first iron forge west of the Allegheny mountains. they made pumpkin balls there for the revolutionary war.
Panning for gold is a very real possibility so bring your gold panning equipment and get ready for the action. There is definitely gold in them their hills.
Have fun, be safe and keep your eye out for Sasquatch and the Greys!

This wooded area is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are less than 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports.
The Fern House is the primary camp cabin on the property. Although if someone would want to park a "self contained" camper or small RV on the property we would permit the unit to occupy the area in front of the driveway just pass the entrance gate. It is not within the ferns and is next to the road. There is an electrical outlet available at this small RV or van camper site.
We are "nice pet" friendly. Dogs should not be left in the cabin alone. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running) up the trail road (450 feet away). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to mid September and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, bear, wild turkey, fox, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound the property especially owls. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the property. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a mile hiking loop right on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. No smoking is permitted in the cabin. Read the entire narrative on the cabin (Tiny Fern House) before booking.

This spot is best for a van camp location but plenty of space for tents and hammocks. You'll find a drive-up deck if you wish to park there. A 8x20' deck and picnic table are 20 feet from the fire for stargazing. When the ferns are full grown they are 3 feet tall and everywhere. A 10 minute walk takes you through a dense pine forest with large rock formations and a nice creek with many gurgling fall areas. If there looks like a cave amongst the large rocks, then it probably is a bear den.
There is a lot to do near by. Some note worthy locations :
Cranberry Glade Lake (good for kayaking or fishing), Ohiopyle, 7 Springs, Fallingwater, Living Treasures, Caddie Shak, and Hidden Valley are all about 25 minutes away. This property also borders Laurel Ridge State Park.

Visit a Homesteading Haven. Our family farm is an inclusive space.
The garden supplies more than half of our vegetables and our favorite berries, and our flock of chickens supply eggs and an early morning wake-up call for our campers! There are no GMO's, pesticides, herbicides or fungicides used on our farm.
We are 3 miles from
Terra Alta, a rural town with a locally owned restaurant and a local craft beer brewery featuring an exciting rotating cast of food trucks.
We are 20 minutes from
Swallow Falls State Park (MD), featuring Muddy Creek Falls, awesome river swimming and gorgeous
hiking in an old growth Hemlock forest.
We are also 20 minutes from
Herrington Manor State Park (MD) were there is a lake for swimming, fishing, and canoeing.
Cathedral State Park (WV) a virgin Hemlock forest with 400 year old trees about 45 minutes away.
Deep Creek Lake (MD) is 40 minutes away and offers motor boat rentals, Golf, Skiing and swimming. There is skiing, hiking, biking, tubing, rafting, kayaking and much more to explore within 40 minutes of our farm. The best white water rafting on the east coast is 20-40 minutes away.

Both Sarah(?) and Michael were great to work with. I booked only a single night but decided to do another because I loved the quiet setting.
Hot showers were a big plus. The majority of camping spots had shade to keep me out of the heat (stayed in a tent).

This is a great camping spot on a beautiful piece of property right next to the bike trail. First time camping in a Safari tent and had a wonderful experience. Host was very accommodating and friendly and helped with building a fire. Looking forward to visiting in the future to see how much has been added.

Awesome spot for camping! We tent camped at the Waterfall site. So private, beautiful, perfect noise of the creek and mini-falls. Take note it’s a steep dirt path down the hill from your car to the site, so be nimble! Quick less than one minute walk to very clean port-a-potty. Two minute walk to the swimming hole which has several floats and is great to jump in on a hot day! Back to our tent site— We woke up to cows grazing right next to our tent… I mean RIGHT next to! They walked through our site in the morning to get to the green grass in the woods. Got our city-hearted adrenaline going, that’s for sure. We also walked through the other sites: wooded site #1 looked amazing too. Nice private spot with shade and a hammock. I’d camp here again!

Chuck’s place is perfect location with access to the GAP trail and he was so great at sharing tips and ideas for activities. We walked the trail to Frostburg and enjoyed the Miner Memorial. We also rode the Tracks! It was chilly in the morning air, bring a sweatshirt! We stayed in Site 2, the 30 Amp side. Everything was fantastic, right on a little creek. The only note is that it is a flat back-in site but the amenities are on the opposite side. We did not have any problems reaching them. We highly recommend if this place is available, choose it! You won’t be disappointed.

Amber’s farm is truly restorative. Our site Beaver Dam was completely private. The field was full of wild flowers. The lake was extraordinary. I have never seen such a blue lake in my life. It was so relaxing laying on the large raft that was tethered to the dock. As I said a very peaceful and restorative place!

We loved staying at this site. had a very relaxed experience, the campsite is well shaded and in a beautiful wooded are with creek running through. If I go camping in WV again i would definitely try booking it again. Clean hot and cold water and shower facilities very useful for camping with a baby.

The view at Chuck’s property was simply gorgeous, lush green mountains for as far as the eye could see. Lots of fun thinks to do - biking and hiking and cute small towns close by. Definitely a great spot if your camper is smaller that 24’ so you can back into the spot!

This is a great spot for a getaway. I was able to string up a hammock and enjoy the sounds of the river just feet away. This is also a great spot for fishing on the river. The topography makes this site feel very secluded. Across the river from the site you can see passing trains, bicyclists and the occasional automobile. Parking is spacious and located up a small hill from the site. There’s firewood available to purchase and the porta-john is in good condition. This is an all around great spot.

I absolutely loved this camp site! We booked last minute but because it’s so big we still were able to have a beautiful spot that felt private and safe! Definitely recommend! Bathrooms could use some work but we took our own potable toilet and since again it’s so private we felt very comfortable setting it up! Michael and his wife are also such sweet hearts and provided a guide of near by activities. We drove to Blackwaterfalls and loved it! Thank you Michael for opening your land and giving us this experience!

River was gorgeous although we didn’t catch any fish! Haha. Train was really fun for the kids during the day, a little loud at night but the free ear plugs were a great touch. Porta John was definitely clean, but a little full… so so nice to have wood right there for sale + the communication was flawless! Thank you so much for sharing your slice of heaven!
