Hello Campers! Our property is 16.5 acres, two of which are along the Tygart Valley River and the rest are within forest canopy on the mountainside. We are in the low foothills of the Appalachia. We have 4 riverfront sites and we are continually changing our space around This year we will be adding a tiny house on site 4 and a sweatlodge with soaking pool on Site 1 additional camping spots along the property near outhouse Each site is equipped with a steel fire pit/grill and a picnic table. We have been busy building hiking trails and more primitive campsites on the 14.5 acres on the hillside across the road from the riverfront for all to enjoy. Step outside your tent and enjoy natures bounty —outdoor activities including fishing, kayaking, hiking, bird watching are all at your fingertips and much more. There are 300+ acres of public land less than one mile away with miles of ATV and hiking trails and stocked ponds. If you're a fan of waterfalls just 4 miles down river is Arden Falls, one of our areas best kept secrets. The Tygart Valley River is one of the top kayaking rivers in the country. Audra State Park is less than 20 minutes away with lush forest trails with caves to explore. Well known hiking trails such as Seneca Rocks, Spruce Knob, and the Dolly Sods are all within an hour drive. Go to Nelson Rocks for the ultimate climbing experience on the Via Ferrata. We are the perfect place to come to explore the wild beauty of West Virginia without the crowds. A hidden gem!

Abrams Creek is like camping in a nature preserve, rather than in a commercial campground. On our campground, there are no generators, loud electronics, or other things that would distract from appreciating this pristine natural environment. And this is always a great place to beat the heat! We havea mountain climate; the peak temperature most days in the summer is in the high 70's or very low 80's, and at night, temperatures go down to about 60 or lower. You'll be breathing cool, clean, fresh mountain air all day long! Hot showers are included, 24/7! We are located in the mountainous Potomac Highlands region of West Virginia. Our vision is an environmentally conscious, eco-friendly campground developed in harmony with nature. We are not only a business, but also serve as an anchor for others who want to live more simply and close to the earth. The concept of rural revitalization means reinventing rural life so that it is economically sound, intellectually stimulating, and emotionally satisfying. Ask any of our staff if you would like to learn more about this!

Camp on an island only accessible by boat/kayak/canoe or however you want to get across the river! Please read the full description. The island is open to visitors from dawn to dusk to enjoy the trails and wild scenery. Camp reservations secure your overnight visit to stay at the designated campsite area, which has a fire ring for cooking, a picnic table, and room for a tent or hammock. Sycamore Island can only be reached by your own canoe, kayak, or rowboat; watercraft is not provided. You are required to have a permit for an overnight stay: Please sign this form before submitting your stay request. https://alleghenylandtrust.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Camping-at-Sycamore-Island-Rules-and-Regulations-4.5.16-Fillable.pdf Please plan your visit in advance- requests to camp the same day or day before may not receive a timely approval. Sycamore Island and its campsite are managed by Allegheny Land Trust, a 501c3 land conservation nonprofit helping local people save local land in the Pittsburgh region. We are able to review and respond to camping requests Monday - Friday between 9 am - 5 pm. Acquired and protected by Allegheny Land Trust in 2008, Sycamore Island is a floodplain forest with a ranking of “high significance” within the Allegheny River Biological Diversity Area (BDA) Natural Heritage Area. Before the island was protected by ALT, the island had periodic interludes of recognition and appreciation by humans as a natural refuge. In 1936, both Sycamore Island and Nine Mile Island were leased from the Pennsylvania Railroad by the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, making these islands the first bird sanctuaries in the Pittsburgh region. The Harbor Isle Boat Club was in existence on the island during the late 1960s but was later abandoned leaving behind several significant features; including a barge that remains embedded in the sand at the island’s southern tip, a partially installed swimming pool, docking platform, and a series of offshore pilings in the back channel.

Groaning Spoke Meadows

8. Groaning Spoke Meadows

Markleysburg, PA · 2 sites
Groaning Spoke Meadows homestead is what you might expect from a homestead, it’s rural, rough in places, constantly working and a work in progress, a mix of farm and forest, but most importantly to me, a place of beauty and rejuvenation. I take a lot of pride in improving the land that hosts us and am nearing the completion of a 5 year Wildlife Habitat Restoration program with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, forest management with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and farming with the Natural Resources Conservation Service. I look forward to sharing this treasure with you and hope you enjoy the fruits of these collaborations in the form of scenic surroundings, a huge diversity of birds and animals, and healthy trees and wildflowers. You’ll be camping on 186 acres of private posted land made up of about 40 acres of farmland, 130 acres of pine and hardwood forest, converging streams, mountain biking and hiking trails, and a 1 acre fish pond next to a covered pavilion surrounded by lawns where you have access to potable water, porta johns, electricity, wifi, and additional firewood(fishing permit and wood for a fee). Remote campsites all have about 5 acres to themselves (plus the neighboring woods), and the campsites get slightly closer together and larger the nearer they are to the pavilion. The pavilion is the social center of the property and the appropriate place to mingle, and make new friends (and friendly noise). I ask that you keep things more subdued in the remote sites and choose the sites nearer to the pavilion if you or someone in your group has an extra “outside” voice. All sites have 10pm-8am quiet hours. Also, the remote sites do not permit powered music, but acoustic instruments are welcome. The property also plays occasional host to Grindstone MTB mountain bike skills camps and private lessons for adults. If there is a bike camp running the campsites closest to the pavilion will be blocked, so there is no conflict with campers. The bike camps are limited to 8 riders, so there won't be more people on the property than if the campsites were occupied. The sites closer to the pavilion are also the best choice for people looking to make day trips by car to the surrounding area (Ohiopyle State Park, Confluence, Youghiogheny Lake and River, Deep Creek, Big Bear, Fallingwater, etc), as the drive out of your campsite will be much shorter. All sites are drive-up camping, with a very short walk to the camping area for the remote sites. In dryer weather a 2wd vehicle with a bit of ground clearance will suffice, but in the wet or snow 4wd is required. Good tires go a long way even for 2wd! The distant neighbors of the surrounding area can make their own noise at times with an ATV or gunshot(especially during hunting season), but most adjoining parcels are also large and mostly unoccupied, so you won’t see other houses or humans. The neighbor across the road (½-1mi away) has a metal recycling business and there is sometimes the bang of a metal dumpster during business hours, so don't be alarmed. That being said, there is plenty of wildlife, including black bears, bobcats, coyotes, skunks, fishercats, racoons, etc, so you must use good food and trash management of your own or our provided bins . The animals are wild and don’t have any interest in humans, and I appreciate your help in keeping it that way! I do have Freyja, a livestock “guardian” dog (her dedication is questionable, haha), who roams the property mostly around the farm area. She is skittish, very protective, and doesn’t see much of other humans or dogs. If you do decide to bring your dog in light of that, they must be on a leash and easy going with other dogs. Every season here has it's own version of striking beauty and serenity, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Rockwood, PA · 1 site · Tent, RV
This spot is best for a van camp location but plenty of space for tents and hammocks. You'll find a drive-up deck if you wish to park there. A 8x20' deck and picnic table are 20 feet from the fire for stargazing. When the ferns are full grown they are 3 feet tall and everywhere. A 10 minute walk takes you through a dense pine forest with large rock formations and a nice creek with many gurgling fall areas. If there looks like a cave amongst the large rocks, then it probably is a bear den. There is a lot to do near by. Some note worthy locations : Cranberry Glade Lake (good for kayaking or fishing), Ohiopyle, 7 Springs, Fallingwater, Living Treasures, Caddie Shak, and Hidden Valley are all about 25 minutes away. This property also borders Laurel Ridge State Park. There is a Dollar General and a gas station about 15 minutes away for convenience needs.

Learn more about this land: This wooded area is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are less than 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports. The Fern House is the primary camp cabin on the property. Although if someone would want to park a "self contained" camper or small RV on the property we would permit the unit to occupy the area in front of the driveway just pass the entrance gate. It is not within the ferns and is next to the road. There is an electrical outlet available at this small RV or van camper site. We are "nice pet" friendly. Dogs should not be left in the cabin alone. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running) up the trail road (450 feet away). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to mid September and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, bear, wild turkey, fox, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound the property especially owls. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the property. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a mile hiking loop right on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. No smoking is permitted in the cabin.
