In 1936, both Sycamore Island and Nine Mile Island were leased from the Pennsylvania Railroad by the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, making these islands the first bird sanctuaries in the Pittsburgh region. The Harbor Isle Boat Club was in existence on the island during the late 1960s but was later abandoned leaving behind several significant features; including a barge that remains embedded in the sand at the island’s southern tip, a partially installed swimming pool, docking platform, and a series of offshore pilings in the back channel.

This spot is best for a van camp location but plenty of space for tents and hammocks. You'll find a drive-up deck if you wish to park there. Firewood is available providing you use downfalls as kindling in the stone fire pit. A 8x20' deck and picnic table are 20 feet from the fire for stargazing. When the ferns are full grown they are 3 feet tall and everywhere. A 10 minute walk takes you through a dense pine forest with large rock formations and a nice creek with many gurgling fall areas. If there looks like a cave amongst the large rocks, then it probably is a bear den. There is a lot to do near by. Some note worthy locations : Cranberry Glade Lake (good for kayaking or fishing), Ohiopyle, 7 Springs, Fallingwater, Living Treasures, Caddie Shak, and Hidden Valley are all about 25 minutes away. Learn more about this land: This wooded area is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are less than 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports. The Fern House is the primary camp cabin on the property. Although if someone would want to park a "self contained" camper or small RV on the property we would permit the unit to occupy the area in front of the driveway just pass the entrance gate. It is not within the ferns and is next to the road. There is an electrical outlet available at this small RV or van camper site. We are "nice pet" friendly. Dogs should not be left in the cabin alone. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running) up the trail road (450 feet away). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to mid September and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, bear, wild turkey, fox, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound the property especially owls. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the property. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a mile hiking loop right on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. No smoking is permitted in the cabin. Read the entire narrative on the cabin (Tiny Fern House) before booking.

Food: Our campground offers a serene escape, to help you get to your "escape with less stress we offer a cooler of food upon your request! Our Chef will do the shopping and have it ready for you! We will cater to what you would like to eat and dietary needs. You will be responsible for the price of food plus delivery charge of $40. *Please order 24hrs prior to your arrival. 2.Dogs A- Permitted on Leash: We understand that many campers enjoy bringing their furry babies along for the adventure. Dogs are welcome at our campground, but they must be on a leash or a run. The fields have some groundhog holes, and we would be devastated if your dog was running and broke a leg if a leg slipped in a hole. We just want them safe. B- Awww poop! Alot of people use the camping area as a barefoot area so please clean up their poop. 3. Quiet time after 10PM: This just means no screaming. Play your guitar and sing until the sun rises if that makes you happy. 4. Alcohol: We would prefer you skip the drinks and just get high, but if your soul needs a drink please drink responsibly. (Don't be that guy) 5. Yurt IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to these policies to create a harmonious camping experience for all. This was a great site near a creek with trails and a superb view of the hills. Nicely laid out with hookups! Pretty easy to get to as well. The host was accommodating about our late arrival. We woke up to three deer in the meadow!

My friend and I loved this campsite. The directions were spot on and it was easy to find. It's a beautiful riverfront site. There is so much to do on the local area: excellent fishing, biking, and hiking are literally within feet of this campsite.

Very private location; well organized and kept. Located along the wide, gentle, tree-covered banks of the river, you will feel one with nature. Firewood available for purchase. Sites 1-4 are all located on the river adjacent to each other, all very similar, spaced comfortably. Site 1 has the opportunity to locate under a massive shade tree. The other 3 sites will be your only ‘non-nature’ view. Owner responded quickly and cordially. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity to stay on your property Emily.

Our stay at Bear Run Farms through Hipcamp was truly special. Even though it rained for most of our trip, the beauty of the land still shined through in such a peaceful, grounding way. There was something incredibly calming about listening to the rain while being surrounded by nature—it made the experience feel even more intimate and memorable. The hosts were exceptionally kind and accommodating, going out of their way to make sure we were comfortable despite the weather. Their warmth and care really made a difference and added to the overall experience. Bear Run Farms is a place that feels genuine, welcoming, and full of quiet beauty. Rain or shine, it’s absolutely worth the visit, and we’re already looking forward to coming back.

In spite of a really rainy few days, we enjoyed our stay at the Rustic Wooded tent site 1. There was a lot of rain, but the site drained relatively well. The trees are perfect for hammocks and the creek and waterfall is lovely to listen to. The fire ring is huge! And the site host had tiki torches around the site which was lovely. Very little to no cell on site (which is fine, just be prepared) The free range cows are fun to watch. Lots of birds and wildlife to watch. Please note the pond is not close to this campsite. If you want a quiet, low key spot to relax and enjoy this one fits the bill.

1 night at Private Riverside Retreat

Just finished up my third trip in less than a month to this site! It's super private and very spacious right along the water, with direct water access. It also has immediate access to the gap trail which is clutch for biking. The fire pit is set against the backdrop of the yough river and has multiple different grates for cooking directly on the fire. The host and his mom are both very responsive and helpful. The portapotty is well maintained, and there is wood available for purchase (although it's a bit pricey) Overall this site is a great bang for your buck! Would definitely recommend!

Chuck is an AWESOME host! He made sure to tell us several things about the area that we might enjoy doing before we even got there! As we travel to the area often, we had already done a lot of the things he mentioned, and since we were primarily there to visit family, we didn't have time to check out any of the other things. However, they are now on our list of things to do! He was even so kind as to let us upgrade to the 50 amp site even though we had only booked the 30 amp. Both sites are awesome, but the 50 amp is a little larger, so it's better for spreading out a little more. It was raining a good chunk of the weekend, and we were very grateful for the nicely packed gravel at each site - we have stayed at other places and ended up dealing with mud... We don't always bring the camper when we come to the area, but when we do, you can bet I'll be checking to see if this site is available before looking anywhere else!

Site was fantastic! Very private and great setting. Site was well maintained—fire ring was awesome. Would highly recommend, we would love to return here. Host’s directions and recommendations were super helpful and spot-on. We also hiked the nearby rail trail and would have explored more if we had the time.

We had a really great time! We lounged on the dock during the day, dipping in the lake when it got too hot and hung out by the fire pit at night. The land is beautiful and a few baby cows stopped by our site one morning! Amber was responsive to our needs and very friendly. The cabin covers the basics and we supplemented with a few camping extras. We’re already talking about coming back.

Chuck’s property is a hidden gem — and I almost hate to say that publicly! If you’re planning to ride the GAP, this is the perfect base camp. The location couldn’t be more convenient, and we came away with miles of great riding and some truly memorable scenery. Chuck is an exceptional host — knowledgeable about local landmarks and trails, quick to respond, and full of great recommendations. We’ll definitely be back.
