Acquired and protected by Allegheny Land Trust in 2008, Sycamore Island is a floodplain forest with a ranking of “high significance” within the Allegheny River Biological Diversity Area (BDA) Natural Heritage Area. Before the island was protected by ALT, the island had periodic interludes of recognition and appreciation by humans as a natural refuge. In 1936, both Sycamore Island and Nine Mile Island were leased from the Pennsylvania Railroad by the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, making these islands the first bird sanctuaries in the Pittsburgh region. The Harbor Isle Boat Club was in existence on the island during the late 1960s but was later abandoned leaving behind several significant features; including a barge that remains embedded in the sand at the island’s southern tip, a partially installed swimming pool, docking platform, and a series of offshore pilings in the back channel.

This spot is best for a van camp location but plenty of space for tents and hammocks. You'll find a drive-up deck if you wish to park there. Firewood is available providing you use downfalls as kindling in the stone fire pit. A 8x20' deck and picnic table are 20 feet from the fire for stargazing. When the ferns are full grown they are 3 feet tall and everywhere. A 10 minute walk takes you through a dense pine forest with large rock formations and a nice creek with many gurgling fall areas. If there looks like a cave amongst the large rocks, then it probably is a bear den. There is a lot to do near by. Some note worthy locations : Cranberry Glade Lake (good for kayaking or fishing), Ohiopyle, 7 Springs, Fallingwater, Living Treasures, Caddie Shak, and Hidden Valley are all about 25 minutes away. This property also borders Laurel Ridge State Park. There is a Dollar General and a gas station about 15 minutes away for convenience needs.

Learn more about this land: This wooded area is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are less than 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports. The Fern House is the primary camp cabin on the property. Although if someone would want to park a "self contained" camper or small RV on the property we would permit the unit to occupy the area in front of the driveway just pass the entrance gate. It is not within the ferns and is next to the road. There is an electrical outlet available at this small RV or van camper site. We are "nice pet" friendly. Dogs should not be left in the cabin alone. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running) up the trail road (450 feet away). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to mid September and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, bear, wild turkey, fox, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound the property especially owls. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the property. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a mile hiking loop right on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. No smoking is permitted in the cabin. Read the entire narrative on the cabin (Tiny Fern House) before booking.

The fields have some groundhog holes, and we would be devastated if your dog was running and broke a leg if a leg slipped in a hole. We just want them safe. B- Awww poop! Alot of people use the camping area as a barefoot area so please clean up their poop. 3. Quiet time after 10PM: This just means no screaming. Play your guitar and sing until the sun rises if that makes you happy. 4. Alcohol: We would prefer you skip the drinks and just get high, but if your soul needs a drink please drink responsibly. (Don't be that guy) 5. Yurt comes down the end of September for rental. We appreciate your cooperation in adhering to these policies to create a harmonious camping experience for all. Fantastic stay way out in the boonies! I was their first guest of the year, and what a cold night it was to camp, but having a heated bathroom and hot showers made it worthwhile. It's about halfway between Wheeling and Fairmont on twisty roads. There is no AT&T cell service for many miles, but that didn't matter. I could look up and see the stars and listen to the rushing waters of the creek nearby.

The location was absolutely beautiful and had wonderful views. The sites weren't too close together, and overall it was a wonderful visit and extremely relaxing. Absolutely loved camping here even in the snow. The property was gorgeous and T1 was very private. Location was great for hiking with Snake Hill wildlife management area right down the road. Tommy was an excellent host, replied very quickly and was very generous. Would recommend, definitely going to return in the summer for the swimming hole.

A very nice spot in a great location. Everything exactly as described. The port-a-john was spotless, the site is just off the road, but in a low traffic area. I enjoyed the trains going by on the other side of the river. It's a short distance to Ohiopyle State Park. I'd very gladly stay here again.

My young daughter and I had a fantastic time camping on Amber’s land. The waterfront site was big and open—perfect for pitching our tent. The jungle gym next to the campsite and the hammock helped keep my daughter entertained. The outside wast very well kept and the cleanest one I have ever seen. We look for wed to camping here again!

Jeffrey's spot is incredible. Secluded, spacious, and peaceful, right on the river. The covered patio area is also really nice with picnic tables. I'm staying here while spending some time with nearby family, in my hand-built "tiny cabin on wheels." Being originally from this area, I can tell you this is absolutely a rare hidden gem you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. As a host, Jeffrey is extremely responsive, very chill and respectful, and has been very helpful. My only heads up to other Hipcampers is that the train is right there, and travel into the site includes a very short stint across then next to the tracks. The train is loud - I'm used to it, I've been hearing that train most of my life - but if you're not used to trains it maybe a little loud at first. But everything about the site is quite perfect, in my opinion. Even the train. :)

Serenity! Easy drive up the hill to the two campsites, one with 50 amp and the other with 30. From the 30 we looked over a small ravine to active wildlife: groundhog, raccoon, skunk, chipmunk and a squirrel, all peacefully coexisting. We had rain, so no sunrise or sunset, but surely they're quite wonderful. We noticed some deep tire ruts in the grass, probably from a very big rig with an inexperienced driver. For most the turnaround would be fairly easy. We loved the excellent directions and solitude.

Weekend Trip to All Ferns Most of the Time

We had a great time on Jim’s property. We set out to do a winter campout using our hot stove tent but the weather had other plans! We still used the stove at night, but the weather during the day was unseasonably warm and gorgeous. The wooden deck was a great spot to set up our camp kitchen and we enjoyed some smash burgers under the stars. The site felt very private and was a great place to chill after spending the day hiking in Ohiopyle (only about 25 minutes away). Would highly recommend this site. Thanks, Jim!

On the way home from a 6 week road trip and needed a stopover halfway in between Lexington KY and Long Island, NY. Electric was our only need as overnight temps were going down to low 30s ( and snow in forecast). I looked into public and private campgrounds in area but everything closed for season. I came across Chuck’s camp on Hipcamp. It was perfect- exactly what we were looking for. Chuck was very happy to help answer all my questions. I wish it was warmer out and that we could have spent more time in the area as there is SO much to explore. We definitely would choose Chuck’s camp again! We can’t thank Chuck enough!

This is my second time at Abrams creek in two years. The amenities have improved over the last two years.Michael and Sara are super hosts and would love to return back when I can. Cozy cabin and ample space around the campfire to rest and relax. Michael is super informative about the amenities. Both of them greeted us with warm smile.Creek is accessible to all the cabins and the whole campgrounds seemed like winter wonderland.
