Welcome to Slate Mountain where you have access to 160 acres of gated, private wilderness with 360 degree mountain views and exclusive waterfront on Slab Creek.
There are two choices of sites to camp: At Site 1 you can park an RV or pitch a tent where you have access to a picnic table, fire pit, vault toilet, and amazing sunset views. At Site 2 you can pitch a tent and have access to a picnic table, fire pit, rocking chairs, and a hammock.
Bring your hiking boots or your off-road toys and explore 160 acres of secluded forest filled with wildflowers, butterflies, ancient Pines and Cedars, wild berries, and wild game. Spend the day relaxing, picnicking, and try your luck at gold panning on pristine Slab Creek where not a single human or road exists for miles. Bring your paddle boards and kayaks and spend an afternoon at Stumpy Meadows, a beautiful mountain reservoir a 25 minute drive from the property. Apple Hill wineries and farms are a 40 minute drive. If you bring the off-road toys you also have access to miles of trails throughout hundreds of acres of national forest. Don’t feel like cooking? Smoke on the Water restaurant at Finnon reservoir in Swansboro is a quick 20 minute drive from the property. If you need supplies, a nice restaurant, or a day of wine tasting to break up the grit, downtown Placerville and Georgetown are both a 45 minute scenic drive.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1) To get the most out of your experience, we highly recommend a 4WD or vehicle, ATVs or eBikes.
2) The creek is at the bottom of the canyon, 1.5 miles from the gate at the entrance, and the road down is very steep and lined with blackberry bushes. We highly recommend an off-road vehicle/ATV or eBikes for easy access to creek.
3) Be aware you are in the middle of the forest and wildlife such as bear, mountain lions, rattlesnakes, and tics have been spotted on the property. Poison Oak is also common.
4) The property has cell service in the upper quadrant, however once you drop below the tree line toward the creek there is no service.
5) We highly recommend bringing a chainsaw or hatchet. There is an abundance of dead wood on the property that can be gathered for camp fires. Trees also occasionally fall on the trail which can impede access to the creek.

Tent sites are next to the pear orchard. Choose any site. There is no need to meet with the host when you arrive. Follow the red arrows. Do not proceed the home located at 1071 Fruitridge. Look for the Hipcamp sign and red arrow markers and turn left into the orchard lane.
Location: Use google maps and locate 1071 Fruitridge Rd in Placerville, CA.
When you get to 1071, which is a house on the right side of the paved driveway, look for our Hipcamp sign in red, turn hard right into the orchard and follow the red arrows past a wood barn, and up to a small red shed. At this point you may camp in the meadow next to the shed or you may proceed to the next meadow over to the left (follow red arrows and look for umbrellas). We normally only have one site occupied per evening. Ocaisonally two sites will be occupied. The sites are very private and quiet as this is a large, private ranch.
You can park close to your tent site. 2WD / 4WD access weather permitting.
We offer 3 sites in a large meadow area. Max of 4 persons per site.
RV's welcome but we do not have hookups. RV's will be parked next to our barns surrounded by pear orchards.
Fresh drinking water is available in the tent meadow area.
Hot showers are now available at $10 extra per nite per site.
A gas BBQ is now available at a common area. Please don't move the BBQ.
Deer, wild turkeys, geese aplenty. Ample walking opportunities on our ranch and wild forestlands and amazing granite rock outcrops. Visit the South Fork of the American River (you can raft in summer!) Hunt for old gold mines on our place and, maybe, find some new ones! Go wine tasting very close by (Lava Cap, Madrone, Boeger) and visit Sutter's Mill in Coloma, where gold was discovered back in 1848.

From Sacramento on Hwy 50:
At the second stop light, Spring St./Hwy 49, turn left, heading north about 1 block to the stop sign. Turn left, staying on Hwy 49, approximately 1 mile.
Turn right on Hwy 193. Travel approximately 3.1 miles to Rock Creek Road.
Turn onto Rock Creek Road and travel 8.9 miles to Finnon Lake/Diner on the Left. The campground is behind the Diner. The DINER "Smoke on the Water" is open only Saturday and Sunday.
Traveling West on 50 from Tahoe:
make a right on HWY 49 traveling north. Follow the above instructions.
Welcome to Finnon Lake Recreation Area!
Our lovely lake to discover.
The night skies above Finnon Lake will reveal stars unseen in California. Enjoy searching for bullfrogs, and watch the flock of Canadian Geese fly in right at sunset as the horizon blends into the watercolor sky.
This private lake supports the fire protection efforts of the Mosquito Fire Protection District and the firefighters of this community. Community volunteers manage the lake for the residents and the Fire Station.
The primary funding source for the Finnon Lake Restoration is the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, which was signed into law in 2004 with a mission to support “efforts that improve the environmental, economic and social well-being of the Sierra Nevada Region, its communities and the residents of California,” according to its Website.
Finnon Lake is also home to a popular 18-hole disc golf course and Mosquito’s only restaurant, Smoke on the Water Diner, which is open on weekends only

We are a small privately owned small campground (20 sites only) located on the outskirts of Placerville. The property features 86.5 secluded Tahoe like acres with beautiful year-round Weber Creek. The camp sites are placed along the creek or the bluff overlooking the creek. We have traditional dirt camping, canvas tents on platforms, teepees and glamping tents for those that want the comforts of home. We are tent camping only with only one site that allows a small travel trailer or van. (#14) . We are dog friendly and allow dogs in all but 5 glamping sites. We do enforce camp rules especially our quiet time between 10 PM and 7 AM
We’ve been told that we have a “family camp” vibe. We are a great place for families wanting a safe environment for their kids but also several group sites for those that want to hang out together with multiple families. We are also a great base site for those wilderness enthusiasts with access to all the El Dorado National Forest including Desolation but want a hot shower at the end of the day.
We have a lodge that is stocked with games and a ping pong table. The lodge has a microwave, Keurig machine and a hot water kettle for those hot drinks (BYO Cups).We have several tables set up for those that want to eat inside as well as multiple picnic tables along the side of the lodge with overhead protection. We have electricity at the at the lodge for small appliances and charging phones. We have a compressor on site to blow up your air mattresses or float toys. We’ve been told that our bathrooms are the “cleanest” ever and have changing tables and diaper pails. We offer nice flushing toilets and hot showers! We have many extra amenities including a compressor to use for your air mattresses,
For outdoor activities we have basketball, volleyball, pickleball and cornhole not to mention the playground with swing set . We have hiking trails throughout the property. Our highlight is a camp fire bowl with bench seating with a stage to display camper talent which is perfect for the evening fire and roasting s’mores (bring the fixings).
The creek starts out in spring looking like a rushing river featuring many fishing and swimming holes. As the summer progresses the water level falls but is still great for water play and fishing.
We have propane BBQs (we provide the propane for BBQs) located throughout the property. We also have a propane grill and charcoal BBQ located in the common area for all to use. There is a dutch oven pit also in the fire bowl area.
We do not allow wood fires at the individual sites but each site has a propane firepit for ambiance (not cooking) that requires you to purchase a 20 lb. propane cannister on site (add in extras) or pay cash on site.
No internet service. There is limited internet only available for purchases at the setore.
We require a 3 night minimum for the major holidays - Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day. We do exclusive events so you may need to explore multiple weekends to find the right reservation.
We are located in the foothills so we are a short hop to many local attractions that include river rafting, gold mines, wineries and historical towns with great eating establishments. Tahoe is less than an hour away and there a many hiking trails within 20-30 minutes.
We have a limited number of items to rent i.e, tents, cots, camp stoves, etc. We rent a battery pack for those that use a cpap. We also have a small store on site for those items you forgot and a good selection of ice cream and ice. We take venmo or cash.

We feel certain you will not be disappointed with our beautiful river canyon. Our property is situated right on the middle fork Cosumnes river. The swimming is awesome and the stars at night will put you into a state of awe!
In the area there are many family owned wineries in the area, most of them offering free tasting! It’s a short drive to Tahoe and the Marshall gold discovery site as well as the historic hangtown Placerville. We are happy to make suggestions for local hiking areas, like the Devil's Slide "Gorge" only a 15 minute drive but like a trip to mini Yosemite. The Caldor Fire was VERY close to our property and a back burn was initiated nearby the our house (literally 200' away!). Our property became a pivotal point of fighting the fire in our community known as the “Ant Hill Army”.

PLEASE NOTE: An All-Wheel Drive or 4-Wheel Drive vehicle is MANDATORY to access campsites 1 - 3, 5 & 6 due to the road incline and rock and gravel road surface. PLEASE PREPARE ACCORDINGLY! Campsite 4 is accessible with a 2-wd vehicle, and has potable well water and 20 amps of power. Sites have beautiful open views of the property and river canyon with natural shade in the morning and late afternoon. Sounds of the river will lull you to sleep. Although partially shaded, please plan to provide your own portable shade structure(s) during late morning and afternoon as the direct sun can be an inconvenience.
The Stranges are professional fish and wildlife biologists and have decided to share this special place for others to enjoy. The property hosts a diversity of plant and wildlife species that might be observed during your stay. Prehistoric and historic resources can be observed along the river corridor. Please be aware that some wildlife species including rattlesnakes, bears, and mountain lions have been observed on the 117-acre property and could potentially be observed near the campsites.
The Ranch's northern portion of the property supports a leased farming operation. Farming operations should not interfere with camping activities.
Day trips are possible to Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, Calaveras Big Trees State Park, local caverns and wine tasting, and historic gold towns.

Our private camp is located riverside on the South Fork of the American River. Our sites are located next to the river under shady oak trees. You'll have a private place to relax and swim at the river. The river is swift but we have a few calm pools in front of our resort to wade and float in. We have modern restrooms with flush toilets and hot showers for your use. We can accommodate large groups in site 1 and we have small private camp sites 2 and 3 as well.
Our Yurt is located on a bluff overlooking the river. The yurt can accommodate 2 adults. Please bring your own bedding, towels and other items.
We have a kitchen area available to large groups and special events for an extra charge. We provide a picnic table and trash can for each private campsite. Wood fires or charcoal cooking are not allowed after July 1 due to fire danger. You may bring a small gas stove or propane grill to do simple cooking. There are several places to eat within a short walk from our campground. We do not allow cars to drive down to the campsites in order to keep the sites pristine. The 2 acre reflects the brilliance of “harmony” in nature. The water is pure, clean and abundant with life yet, HartSong Ranch is a pesticide free facility. Nature, taking care of itself, is truly a beautiful thing. Yellow Water Iris are in full bloom, spring through early summer. Dragonflies and butterflies sparkle in the sunshine. Frogs croak, bats dart here and there and big mouth bass become airborne in search of dinner in the early evening hours. Blue and White Heron visit the pond often – gracefully soaring over the pastures and pond in search of a safe place to land among the Iris. Watching them calculate a strategy to catch a meal, while appearing to stalk in slow motion – FASCINATING!
Upwards of 40 Canada Geese goslings are hatched yearly on the grounds of HartSong. It’s absolutely adorable to watch the little ones as they frantically paddle along behind their moms. In addition and if you’re an early riser, you will most certainly feel blessed to observe the loving, yet stern, communications between Canada Goose parents (life- long mates) as they teach their young to fly - every morning at sunrise in the spring.

They feature small-batch local artisan-roasted coffees, fresh bakery goods, breakfast and lunch fare, as well as specialty drinks, beer, and local wines. They also offer a beautiful outdoor patio that is dog friendly. Dogs are also welcome inside the cafe.

Incredible experience. The host was above and beyond accommodating, and his knowledge of the area made the experience extra special. We cannot thank him enough for how kind and welcoming he was, and he had so many interesting facts to share. This is a gem of a location, with a spectacular view and so much wildlife, particularly birds. You can spend a lot of time exploring the area, and the sound of the river was perfect to fall asleep to. This spot is also located near many caverns and historic towns if you don’t want to spend the entire time at the campground. We will definitely be back!

Beautiful quiet peaceful raw land, a perfect getaway to recharge for the weekend. Stunning view, well kept, and very relaxed hosts with excellent communication. LOVE that we had the entire property to ourselves and that it was behind a locked gate. The primary RV/tent site is very level, has some shade coverage, picnic table, well kept fire ring, large water container, and a very clean pit toilet 15-20 yards down a lantern lit path. (The owner’s RV sits at the back of this main site, but they were not there during our stay, and it is very well kept so it is not an eye sore to the gorgeous views.) We setup our rooftop tent in an opening. We did not walk all the way down to the creek, but we took the path down about a 100 yards to watch the sunrise. It was easy and a mild/moderate incline. The sunrise was spectacular! A few reviews mention glass and gunshots. The property is clearly well taken care of and a labor of love. We found the main areas to be mostly glass free. Do your part and clean up after yourself (and maybe even a little extra.) We did hear some very distant gunfire across the valley, most likely target practice, but nothing that disrupted the quiet peaceful vibe. The only other noise was the occasional vehicle and a few airplanes. You’d be hard pressed to find a quieter place within a few hours of the Bay Area. As far as the road, Mosquito Rd on the way in is infamous and has some harry spots. There’s an alternate route if you’re towing or a nervous Nelly.

We loved our glamping weekend getaway. Aaron is such a wonderful host and was very accommodating. He is also very knowledgeable and passionate about his wines, which really shows in his offerings. We took the wine tasting and tour add-on which I’d also recommend! Along with the propane fire grill and burger pack, absolutely delicious.
We will definitely be visiting again.

We had a great family weekend on the vineyard! It was a cute little campsite with a swing (our girls loved this!) and a picnic table. We were able to rent a propane fire pit directly from them, so we could have a fire without having to bring our own. The wine tasting was very informative and fun and the girls checked out the Vincade. You can buy wine and cider if you want a little more for later (the Rose Cider was my favorite!). A few things to be aware of, the porta potties were quite full and if you want to add on any of the food options (which is a nice perk!), make sure you do that in advance. We did discover we could doordash a pizza from the Pizza Factory (I know, not very camping of us, but very convenient). It was very quiet at night and the sunset over the vineyard was beautiful! Overall, a great stay!

We had an amazing time camping at Finnon Lake! We tent camped with our two dogs and couldn’t have asked for a better spot—our site was very close to the water, which made the whole stay super relaxing. Waking up to the lake just a few steps away was perfect.
The campground was clean, peaceful, and easy to get around. Our dogs had plenty of space to enjoy without feeling crowded, and the whole area just felt really dog-friendly and laid back. The scenery was beautiful, and being so close to the water made it easy to fish, relax, or just enjoy the view.
Overall, it was exactly the kind of quiet, nature-filled getaway we were hoping for. We’ll definitely be coming back!

It's a nice place with beautiful views. The campsites are pretty close together, with many being both RV and car sites. It's not a recipe for a quiet environment, but that's really not expected in these type of campgrounds. I saw several families there, and everyone was having fun (responsibly) and a good time was had by all. The bathroom was clean, as were the campsites. Wildlife was nice in the way of ducks, geese, and very vocal (as always) blue jays. Plenty of woodpeckers as well. My only wildlife complaint might be they have a pretty serious issue with moles tearing up the sites, but it's nothing a fox or coyote couldn't fix.

We had such a wonderful time at this campsite and truly enjoyed the peaceful serenity among the trees. I’ve lived in the Sierra Nevada area my whole life, and as a fairly healthy 26-year-old, I can say the trail is no joke. Definitely read the reviews and plan ahead—bring something to help you get down and back up. I ended up finding two walking sticks and just took my time.
The views were absolutely worth it, and my three dogs had the best time splashing around in the creek! Highly recommend for anyone looking for a beautiful, quiet getaway

In the Sierra Nevada near Lake Tahoe, Eldorado National Forest is a popular and easy nature getaway for Sacramento and Bay Area residents. Spanning nearly 600,000 acres, the forest offers more than 400 miles of trails, hundreds of lakes and reservoirs, and thousands of miles of rivers and streams, including 611 fishable miles, across a diverse landscape of rugged peaks, steep river canyons, and lush forests. With so much to do, you’ll want to spend a few days exploring—more than 50 developed campgrounds, cabins, and excellent backcountry camping options in the Desolation and Mokelumne Wildernesses offer plenty of space for every type of camper

- Best for swimmers and tent campers: The walk-in Fashoda Campground offers a large swim beach and shady tent sites with views of Union Valley Reservoir.
- Best for fishing and Mokelumne Wilderness access: The Woods Lake Campgrounds offers easy access to Woods Lake and Mokelumne Wilderness trails.
- Best for paddlers and floaters: The Gerle Creek Campground is located near Gerle Creek and the sheltered and calm waters of Gerle Reservoir.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- During peak season, plan to reserve a campsite as soon as you know your dates. Reservations can be made from four days and up to six months in advance.
- If you don’t have a reservation, plan to arrive first thing in the morning to grab a site at a first-come, first-served campground.
- Check on seasonal opening and closing dates, which vary by campground. Some campgrounds may be closed due to effects from recent fires.
When to go
Summer is the most popular time for camping, with peak times in July and August. The fishing season runs from late April to mid November. Spring can see dazzling wildflower displays, while fall colors are worth seeing in September and October. Most winter activities are snow dependent. Sno-parks in the region require permits from November through May.
Know before you go
- Campfire permits are required for all fires outside of developed campgrounds. Fire regulations may limit or prohibit fires entirely from time to time.
- Overnight permits are required to enter the two wilderness areas. Desolation Wilderness has a quote system from Memorial Day through September and also requires a free day use permit.
- Vehicles, including bicycles, are not permitted in wilderness areas.
- Be aware of hazard trees damaged from fire.
- Fishing licenses are required for anyone 16 and over.
- Be bear aware, especially when camping. Store food and other attractants in a bear-proof container away from your tent.

Great place for sure.
We camped in a 30ft Class C. no hook ups. Wrights Lake Rd off of Hwy 50 is doable, but steep and curvy the first couple of miles. Got to go slow coming down when leaving. It is a wonderful camping opportunity.

All access camp. Many trails, campsites and bathrooms that can be accessed by all. The Forest Service has spent a lot of time and money upgrading this area over the years. Sections of the creek that I used to privately explore are now accessible with full on bridges and boardwalks. That said, there are always more places to explore beyond the obvious. Great for all ages of people. Potable water.

Hi, We went through Silver Fork Campground today, we were on a day trip to fish. So I just wanted to say how sad I was to see how the visitors have treated this campground, they leave their trash and garbage every, it was disgusting, then the park workers are left to clean it up. Honestly what is wrong with campers that they would leave campsites in such disgusting messes. Thank you park workers for cleaning up after these horrible people, you should not have to do that. On a positive note, I had a great chat with the guy planting fish along the creek, very nice fellow and he was really planting some nice fish (not gonna tell you where either). So please everyone, haul out your trash, try to leave your campsite better than you found it

This campground should be re-named Mosquito Hell Hole! The tiny pond in the campground is full of the vicious bloodsuckers. Why the Forest Service doesn't fill it in or drain it is mind-boggling. Camp there at your own peril - you have been warned!

Brought my kids here on our first camping trip. The fishing was fun, the site had great water access, secluded, and big enough for a couple of more tents. It might have been too rough for a first trip, but we still had fun. My daughter said she really missed flushing toilets. It is a half-hour to anything and an hour from anything other than a small store cafe. Not really a problem for us, but don't forget anything. The lake was beautiful and warm enough for swimming (it was August). The hikes were amazing. Overall we really enjoyed ourselves. It was a great camping spot.

We loved this place. Very pretty, relatively quiet, well-maintained. No cell service, which was a plus for me, but would have been good to know ahead of time as it's a little tricky to find. We never saw a sign for the forest road we were to turn on; it's labeled Wentworth on the signs. You might hear the Deliverance theme in your head as you drive down that road, but it gets better once you turn into the campground.
Good place for families. Lots of dirt to dig in, nice, easy trails to hike, reasonably clean toilets, quiet at night.
There were quite a few dogs and no one had them leashed at their campsites. Several wandered and while we didn't have any problems, it might not be good for those who are afraid of dogs.
We plan to return.

Camped at Black Oak campsite #4 in June 2018. This campground is only 4 sites and they are all group sites. Area was ravaged by the 2014 Kings fires and site #4 was hit hard. The site was still pretty though. We had a group of 5-9 year olds, and they had a blast building shelters with the fallen wood all around us. Because of the cleared trees, we were comfortable letting them roam/play because we could see them far away.
There are 4-5 picnic tables, 2 high food prep tables, 4 charcoal grills, and a very large fire ring. Each site had it's own pair of vault toilets. They were fine. One water spigot at the site, and one at the toilets--no real sink however. There are no bear lockers, which is weird, but it wasn't a problem for us.

My boyfriend and I have camped here more times than I can count, both with friends and on our own. It's definitely not for those looking for a campground with lots of amenities, but it has everything we personally need! There's a good mix of sunny and shady sites to fit whatever you may be looking for, and has great access to lots of trad climbing and a couple of beautiful hikes. Definitely our most visited campground!

If you like boats, boating and boat people, this place if for you. If you like a little bit of quiet, peace and non-belligerent sunburned boozed up bros, keep it moving down the road to any of the hundred other amazing grounds in El Dorado National Forest.

Have been coming here several times a year since 1992. If you really want to get away, keep driving on Ice House road past the campsites until you get to the end of the road. Unload your canoe and paddle in or hike in. It's open wilderness and hopefully, you won't see another soul for a hundred yards. You'll discover spots that adventurous souls have pitched their tents in the past. Just look for the fire rings. I've been hoarding this jem to myself for the last 25 years. Hopefully, another generation will discover the awesomeness of Loon Lake.

Silver group is the best campsite for 20+ people. Spacious with several fire rings, vault toilet, no showers but you can bathe in the reservoir and stream nearby.

This was my first time camping at Ice house. We went Sunday-Tuesday During Memorial day Weekend. I thought Sunday night would be packed since the campground was fully booked. I was happy to find the sites were very spread out so it didn't feel crowded at all! We stayed at site 57 the first night and site 55 the next night. Both were a short walk to the water and close to the toilets.
On Monday we took our kayaks out on the lake which was a lot of fun. The water was calm and there was very few people on the water. Later that day a thunder storm rolled in and it rained for about 2 hours so we drove to the nearby Ice House Resort and played pool until the sun came out.
Overall the lake was beautiful and the sites were spacious and clean.

This place is beautiful! Lots of trees and granite everywhere. The campground feels very spacious. The reservoir does not allow motorized boats. The boat ramp and day use area is free to use! The toilets are all vaults here. Check in time is 2:00 p.m. Check out time is 1:00 p.m.
Reservations are $25. This campground takes reservations and does fill up during the busy season. There are 50 sites and 2 are group sites ($50).The best will be to bring your kayaks, paddle boards, or anything to take out on the lake. There is a fishing pier and a good spot to take photos.

This is a free campground in Eldorado National Forest that usually opens Memorial Day weekend and closes mid-October. It is a paved road all the way here. You can't make reservations as it is first come-first served and there are only 16 sites. Amenities include bear box, picnic table, fire pit, and vault toilets. There is no piped water so you must bring your own. Some weekends it is hard to get a spot since the Rubicon 4WD crowd uses it. A few times we have gone here people have left all their trash at the site instead of putting it into the dumpster provided. Please pick up after yourself so we can keep this as a non-fee campground.
The Gerle Creek Campground and Reservoir are nearby and take camping reservations.
