A beautiful, private bend in the Van Duzen River, our riverfront property features a secret waterfall and is nestled in the heart of Humboldt County, just minutes from the Redwood State Parks and a short drive from Ruth Lake. Our property is an organic, mom-and-pop, fully licensed permaculture farm where we grow cannabis and food, complete with seven goats and a sprinkling of chickens. We offer beautiful views, relaxing riverfront camping, kayaking, and more. Our place caters to tent campers, motorcycle campers, van lifers, and small- to medium-sized RVs. We can provide an extension cord and water, but we do not have septic hookups. We also offer our VW camper bus as a place to sleep for an additional fee (sleeps up to four). Well-behaved pets are welcome, though please keep in mind that we also have livestock, as well as dogs and cats. We don't want you to feel limited to just the trees and river. We have a large, flat yard with a giant fire pit and a trampoline for the kids. While we're 30 minutes from town, we're fortunate to be just 1 mile from the Swains Flat Outpost convenience store for those last-minute necessities. **Check us out on Instagram @laughinggoatriverretreat

The story starts with the adventure of getting here! Please use any map app to: Holmes, Ca. DO NOT use any map app after this point - IT WILL NOT GET YOU THERE! Once you have made reservations you will receive an email with written directions that must be followed to find this magical place. *WARNING - there is poison oak on the property. Its actually in all the state parks as well - it lovers this climate, so familiarize yourself with its appearance. We do our best to mitigate the camp sites and keep them clear, but it is around. While some people do not react to it, others definitely do and it is no fun. There is an identification poster at the bathrooms. If you come in contact use soap and cold water to wash right away. Now about this beautiful place - This property has been in the family since 1922. During a time of no roads just the railroad that passed through, and a river ferry. At the entrance of the property was the town of Skelly, with a post office, train stop, animal corrals and railroad logging spurs. The lands primary use was ranching and timber back then. The flat that the camp ground is located on is the site of the old Larrabee school house (Georgeson School) which was built after the 1955 flood took out the original school house, located across from the train trussell next to Larabee Creek. The railroad was closed indefinitely in 1996, which changed the entire landscape for this small community. This area is accessible by a low water bridge in the summer months and offers a spot to slip back in time. Today the land is a great example of sustainably harvest redwoods, a project that was established by great grandpa and is still in practice today. The timber surrounds the pastures and farm land that now produces hay. We acquired this land 5 years ago and have spent countless hours restoring the fields, managing the forest and creating a working sustainable environment. It is a very special place and offers peace and quite to those who enjoy the out doors and camping. Just six minutes off the Avenue of the Giants through Holms Flat.

The Tower is hidden away on top of a hill in the Mattole Valley, a steep 500-foot switchback hike through Douglas firs on a trail built especially to reach it. It is set within its own hilltop meadow. The property is about 2 acres all in all, with the main house just down below at the bottom of the trail where I live. Enjoy total seclusion and privacy in this unusual Lost Coast hideaway. Accessible only by a STEEP 500-ft trail, you must be fairly fit to appreciate this remote spot. The climb will take you to a two-storey 'tower' built around two water tanks. The Mattole River is just over the road below. Enjoy the spectacular bird life. The remote Mattole Beach is just six miles away and makes for great hiking and beachcombing. **Important Check-in info** The Tower is a property that preferably needs a guide to show you up there initially. It is hidden, and you’ll benefit from a quick orientation up there. Check-in before dark, please, due to the trail. The upper storey of the Tower has a double sized bed,and comfy. Line-dried fresh-smelling bedding. This room also has a long sofa, Deco chairs, redwood window seats and a long cherrywood table. There is also a sink upstairs for easy teeth brushing etc. The Tower is on two floors, connected by an outside staircase. So *PLEASE NOTE* that as the bathroom is on the lower floor you will need to go down the *outside* stairs to the bathroom. Downstairs is the bathroom, shower and kitchen in one open plan room. The lower storey also houses water tanks, wrapped in canvas painted by a local artist. The spring water is excellent for drinking. Relax beneath the stars in the outdoor in-ground copper bath tub, with plenty of space for two and a small surrounding deck for glasses of wine, or take a hot shower outside, looking out onto the hills. Enjoy ceramicist Jim Danisch's sculptures punctuating the trail. In collaboration with Petrolia's craftspeople, the Tower was designed by my father, a writer and lover of art. For groceries, the local Petrolia store has most basics (including a gas pump) but its provisions are limited so please bring your own special groceries if you want more than basic. Please note there are ZERO bars and restaurants in Petrolia. Bear in mind that the Petrolia Store closes at 5pm, so be sure to bring groceries with you if you're arriving later than that, especially for that first night's dinner! To enable a real break and total relaxation, there is no WiFi! There is very limited cell service in Petrolia. There is a landline available for your private use in the Tower. Petrolia is off the beaten track and lies at the end of a very winding, rugged road with potholes a-plenty. Ordinary cars can make it, but if you are hiring a car you will be better off hiring an all wheel car that is not too low off the ground. Be prepared for a real rural retreat. The tower is right in the wilderness atop a hill, so be prepared to hear and see animals around. Please note that I have been hosting on another platform for many years with lots of happy guests. Please google The Lost Coast Tower to see those reviews, to get a sense of the place from a guest's perspective . Thank you!

Redwoods nearby? Forest Bathing? Dunks in the Deepwater Pond? Wood Fired Paella? Hiking on site? Have it all and relax at our forest glen located in Southern Humboldt 5 miles up private dirt road (2 wheel drive OK- but sports car height is not good ( IE not a BMW or Tesla)--higher clearance is best.) Our land is part of an old collectively owned by "back to the landers" group from the 70's. The parcel is over 500 acres, but our portion is about 40 acres. There is a large deepwater pond with a rowboat (and frogs) orchard, stream, and many hiking trails my husband created and dirt roads winding through the property. 420 friendly! Enjoy the birds in the morning and frogs on the pond at night from your well equipped tent with queen mattress and comfy comforters, sitting space, and wood counter for food prep. ( propane ok) No fires allowed at site but enjoy the large communal fire pit and terrace steps away. Our deep water pond (15 ft) is FULL and ready for warm summer swims. Wifi and electric for charging and an electric water kettle for coffee making is available at the communal space. EV charging is possible but slow off of our solar panels. Hiking trails on our 500 acre property and Lost Coast Trail at Shelter Cove Black Sands beach is 1 hour away. Ave of the Giants is 45 minutes away. We encourage 2 night stays as it is a bit of a trek to get here. Your hosts have everything you might need ( cooking wise) and can arrange for cooking equipment and utensils. Need Paella pans? Paella is our passion and we can offer a Paella Cookout customized to your dietary needs for an additional fee. We are 5 miles up a private dirt road ( 2 wheel drive is ok but caution to lower clearance vehicles) You will be deep in the relaxing forest. The 16 foot bell tent is quite large and can accommodate 2 more travelers. However they would need to provide sleeping bags and mats. Children under 10 not recommended The Chimes tent is slightly smaller 13 foot bell tent set on a platform 6 feet off the ground-- literally in the trees! We provide one citronella candle. Don't forget your headlamps. We are 35 miles (once on the pavement) to Lost Coast Trail and Shelter Cove. 20 miles to Ave of the Giants.

My aunt and uncle bought the property in 1947 from its first European settler, Paolo Gabrielli, who immigrated in early 1914 from northern Italy with slips of his grapevine in the lining of his coat. (The grapevine still grows over the back deck.) What can you expect? Quiet, beauty, birdsong, ocean roar, widely spaced campsites (only 5 on the 5 acres set aside for camping). Free firewood, local tips on travel and where to hike or what to visit. Or total solitude. Bring your (most non-cattle-chasing breeds) dogs if you wish (males must be neutered). Starlink internet. Walk to the beach of our wild ocean along a no-shoulder country road. We have no visible neighbors, no ambient light or sound. The air is clean and clear and the water is potable from an artesian spring on the property. No electricity at the sites and no generators allowed. (Charge your electronics at the farmhouse.) We offer homemade soup, cobbler, fresh bread, morning coffee as extras; you can order with the booking. The Victorian village of Ferndale is three miles east, as is a beautifully maintained 110-acre town wilderness with hiking trails called Russ Park. A 150-year-old cemetery slopes down a hillside & is filled with 19th century charm and history. Shops and restaurants welcome visitors. There are several bars/a wine bar/and a historic saloon that's as old boy as it was in 1890. A music venue in a restored 19th century church has amazing acoustics and attracts international talent as a top-notch venue (sessions are filmed for PBS) midway between Portland and San Francisco. So, it's a mix of town and country, village and farm, wilderness and bewilderedness. Safe, safe, safe, meaning: you can leave your belongings in your site and when you come back... they're still there :) One caveat: please arrive before dark. There is no electricity in the campgrounds, and no generators are allowed. You will not be able to reach (or maybe even locate) your site without disturbing others. This is a place of beauty, love, and laughter; we welcome the world.

Pitch a tent or park your RV right off the main road to the spectacular Lost Coast of California. Our property is located 5 minutes from Cape Mendocino beach and 4 minute drive to downtown Petrolia, we are surrounded by scenic pastoral views and ancient forest. We have multiple camping options and a wood chip driveway that can accommodate a couple RV's (or vehicle camping). Our land has fields and forest, a seasonal creek, and incredible star gazing. We are right on the Mattole Road, so the RV spots and campsites close to the road with easy access will see cars, but we have 26 acres including plenty of tucked away spots that can be walked to and are far from the road if you are seeking seclusion. We are working on developing campsites, but for now, you can have your choice of where to camp on the property. You can sleep out in an open meadow or in the forest under the Pepperwood trees. This is a working farm, so there are livestock and everything that comes along with them on the property! Our sheep and two spayed female livestock guardian dogs free range most of the time on the property, but are accostomed to people and usually either keep their distance or stop by to say hi. The dogs do sometimes bark at night if they sense predators. We sometimes have building and ecological restoration projects on the property as well. Our property has been farmed and ranched since the late 1860's and has a beautiful old barn. As the most recent stewards of the land, our family is starting a small organic farm on it utilizing regenerative agricultural methods. It is a beautiful place and a work in progress! For now we can offer a rustic outhouse, fresh spring water, a sink for dishes, a not-so-private shower (feel free to wear your swimsuit if you prefer), and Wi-Fi access to our guests, as well as knowledge of the local area. Downtown Petrolia has a general store (sells gas but only accepts cash), Sunday Farmer's Market at the Mattole Valley Community Center, a pioneer cemetery to explore, the gorgeous Mattole River for fishing and swimming, and access to the Mattole Beach. **Note: this is called the Lost Coast for a reason. It is gorgeous and remote, but the roads are winding, steep, and poorly maintained in some areas! Potholes abound. We drive our two wheel drive Prius car out here, so the roads are definitely navigable, just a bit intense. The closest pharmacy is almost an hour away, so please bring any medications you need.

Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park camping guide

Overview

About

This redwood grove on the banks of the Van Duzen River is a tiny treat. Grizzly only covers one square mile but contains the famed Cheatham Grove. The grove starred in Return of the Jedi's iconic scooter chase scene. You might find a Star Wars fan or two hanging out whenever you arrive.

The park's small size means there's not too much in the way of hiking trails. The warm summer months average around 75 degrees and are perfect for camping, though. Only 30 campground sites are available, so it's great for campers who value privacy.

With the Van Duzen River bordering the camp, there are options on the water as well. Canoeing, kayaking, and swimming are all popular pastimes for visitors.

Fishing fans might want to stop by in winter. Colder weather conditions of about 40 to 50 make salmon and steelhead fishing particularly fruitful.

Notable campgrounds

  • Family Campsites - Cozy spots nestled by the river, perfect for making memories.
  • Group Campsites - Ideal for larger gatherings, surrounded by the whispers of the forest.
  • Hike or Bike Campsites - Connect with nature at these minimalist, serene sites.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book six months in advance to secure your ideal dates.
  • Weekdays often have more availability than weekends.
  • Consider off-peak seasons for a quieter experience.
  • Explore nearby camping options for additional opportunities.

When to go

The best time to visit Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park is during the summer months, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Winter brings cooler weather, ideal for fishing, but with significant rainfall from November to May.

Know before you go

  • Store food in bear-resistant lockers to avoid wildlife encounters.
  • Fires are only permitted in designated stoves or rings.
  • Keep dogs on a leash and off the trails.
  • Day use area is open from 8am to sunset.
  • Accessible features are available for those with disabilities.
