Secluded private river and forest camping on the South Fork Mokelumne River. The site has incredible views with a pristine private gold-bearing trout stream with Native American and gold mining history located in the Sierra Nevada foothills of northern Calaveras County. This unique property is adjacent to over 900 acres of public land and 2 miles of stream for exploring. With a total of only 6 campsites, it is a great location for a group to reserve the entire campground. All campsites have potable well water spigots and access to a cool water shower, sites 4, 5, and 6 have 20 amps of electricity. Guests enjoy the privacy while swimming, stream exploring, hiking, spelunking, forest immersion, fishing for wild trout, gold panning, or simply relaxing in a breathtaking environment – come fall in love with this special private ranch. After one stay, you will be a repeat guest. PLEASE NOTE: A 4-Wheel Drive vehicle or high clearance All-Wheel Drive vehicle is MANDATORY to access campsites 1, 2, and 3 - while strictly 4-wd vehicles are MANDATORY to access sites 5 and 6 due to the road incline and rock and gravel road surface. PLEASE PREPARE ACCORDINGLY. Campsite 4 is accessible with a 2-wd vehicle, and has potable well water and 20 amps of power. Sites have beautiful open views of the property and river canyon with natural shade in the morning and late afternoon. Although shade structures have been constructed at Campsites 1, 3, and 4, the other sites are partially shaded by trees during portions of the day. Consider providing your own additional shade structure(s) as the direct sun can be an inconvenience at each site. Pets are limited to one large dog OR two small to medium sized dogs per campsite. There is a strict policy that all pet owners pick up waste from their dogs and that dogs be quiet, well-mannered, and under immediate control at all times so as not to disturb other campers. Please be aware that some wildlife species including rattlesnakes, mountain lions, and occasional bear have been observed on the 117-acre property and could potentially be observed near the campsites. The Ranch's northern portion of the property supports a leased farming operation. Farming operations typically do not interfere with camping activities.

The premier Riverfront Campsite is situated just above the South Fork Mokelumne River and stairway, perfect for river access. 4-Wheel or All-Wheel Drive vehicles with high clearance is MANDATORY for access to this site. The site is on a flat, soil and rock area 40 feet above the river with fantastic views and sounds of the river. . This is a spectacular campsite! The site accommodates tent camping or small self-contained RVs with a maximum capacity of 8 campers and 2 vehicles at this site. There are no RV hookups at this site, but does have potable well water. The site contains a permanent 10ft x 12ft shade structure with an additional camping area under a large shaded oak tree that looks down onto the river. The site is located at one of the sunniest spots, so we recommend that you bring an additional shade structure if available. The river, shared beach, campfire pit, and swimming hole is a short walk down the staircase with handrails from the campsite. Strolls up or down from the beach will provide immediate privacy. The site is ideal for private group camping, especially by renting campsites 1 and 2 at the same time. Guests share the beach and river with all other campers. A shower with non-heated water is available to all campers. Portable 5-gallon solar showers can be used in the shower closure and are available for rent. Lawn games including cornhole and ladder-toss, and gold panning kits are available for rent. The site has a portable campfire pit for use during the non-wildfire season. Firewood is available for sale of approximately 10-12 pieces of seasoned oak wood per bundle. Restricted wood burning fires are allowed year-round at the group campfire pit located on the beach, including during the wildfire danger season. Gold Mine Campsite is located overlooking the South Fork Mokelumne River and above the entrance to the gold mine. The flat location is on an old roadbed that provides a separate access trail to the river downstream of the swimming hole. 4-Wheel or All-Wheel Drive with high clearance is MANDATORY for access to this site. The site has partial shade provided by oak trees with a flat, sunny area for tents. There is a maximum capacity of 6 campers and 2 vehicles at this site. We recommend bringing an additional shade structure if available for the sunnier areas. There is a partial vegetation barrier between Site 2 and Campsite 1 located approximately 200 feet away, with private views and sounds of the river, forest, and canyon. The river, beach, large campfire pit, and swimming hole are a very short walk away via the staircase, and are shared by all campers. Short strolls along the trails up or down from the beach will provide immediate privacy. There are currently no electrical hookups at this site, but guests may use a small quiet generator if necessary. The site has potable well water with the portable toilet and shower 30 feet away. A shower with non-heated water is available to the site for use by all campers. Portable 5-gallon solar showers can be used in the shower closure and are available for rent. Lawn games including cornhole and ladder-toss and gold panning kits are available for rent. The campsite has a portable campfire pit for use during the non-wildfire season. Road Bend Campsite is an 1,100ft2 site located above the South Fork Mokelumne River and campsites 1 and 2 with views of mountaintop ridges, river canyon and public land, and views and sounds of the river. A 4-Wheel or All-Wheel Drive vehicle with high clearance is MANDATORY for access to this site. The flat campsite location is off the access road to the river and is an approximately 450 feet walk (3-4 minutes) down the steep access road to the shower, bathroom, river, and beach. There is a maximum capacity of 8 campers and 2 vehicles at this site. We recently added a 10ft x 12ft permanent shade structure and an additional 500 ft2 tent camping extension to increase the potential number of campers using the site. Potable well water is available at the campsite, but the site does not have electrical or RV hookups. Guests may use a small quiet generator if necessary. Guests will have access to the shower and portable toilet near Campsites #1 and #2. The shower has non-heated, cool water and is available to all campers. Portable 5-gallon solar showers can be used in the shower closure and are available for rent. Lawn games including cornhole and ladder-toss, and gold panning kits are available for rent. The Canyon Views Campsite is the most private campsite with 2-wd vehicle access to the 1,500+ sq ft bench area nestled amongst the oak and pine trees with panoramic views of the mountains and canyon, and sound of the river flowing below. The campsite has great views, sunsets and sounds of the river. This site is easily accessible with a 2-wd vehicle and amenities. The site has access to a potable well water, 20 amps of 110V electricity, nearby portable toilet, and portable campfire pit - or bring your own propane campfire. The campsite has a maximum capacity of 6 campers and 2 vehicles. Enjoy the river or hiking the property from a more secluded campsite with access to full amenities. The river is approximately 1550 ft down the steeper lower access road. It is recommended to drive a 4-WD or high clearance AWD vehicle down to the river access parking area. to avoid the long, steep return hike. The privacy, views, and sounds of river compensate for the distance from the river. The site has a permanent 10x12 ft shade structure. This site is accessible only with a 4-wd vehicle. The site has a potable well water, 20 amps of 110V electricity, campfire pit, and nearby portable toilet approximately 350 ft down the acroad. You can use your own small propane campfire. The site has a maximum capacity of 8 campers and 2 vehicles. Enjoy the river or hiking the property from a more secluded campsite with access to full amenities. The shower and river access is approximately 1700 ft down the steeper road from the campsite. The views, surrounding trees, bird life, and solitude compensate for the distance from the river. It is highly recommended to bring a 4-wd vehicle to drive down to the river access parking area to enjoy the river and shower facilities because of the long downhill walk. Beautiful Campsite! Terry was incredibly hospitable and Site #1 was the ideal spot for the weekend. The permanent shade structure, clean facilities, and well maintained river site all contributed to a great weekend! It was very hot while we were there, but as soon as we got down to the river, we were able to cool down and relax with all the natural tree cover and running water. Lots of space to move up and down the river, but the main beach/swimming hole was very easy to access with a small child and dogs! The views were beautiful and the sound of the running water was extremely relaxing. Would definitely book again!

Site #6 - Forest Emersion Campsite
What a find! Sites 1,2 a staircase away from a beautiful river. Definitely bring your watet shoes! We walked up and down the river and every time found something new and interesting to see! Site 3 is a short hike down the road to the river, manageable, but may be challenging for some. Definitely have a 4wd (all terain tires suggested), so you can just drive and park at the river from any of the other sites. Campsites have a good bit of separation from the others, and at night it felt like we were all alone! Awesome amenities made the stay comfortable. The host is amazing, knowledgeable, present, but not overbearing. And if it gets too hot mid day, hop in the air conditioned car and go explore the area around the camp. There are some pretty cool points of interest near by. We stayed 3 nights and loved every minute. We will be back soon!

Site #2 - Gold Mine River Overlook
It is a wonderful campsite with plenty to do. You can fish, hunt for crawfish, gold pan, explore gold mine, etc... Terry is awesome with lots of activities&history info and extremely welcoming. We will return to campsite 1 or 2 in the future. General info.... You must have a awd/4x4 to get down to the parking area by campsite 1&2 for easy access to the river, shower, toilet and wash bin. You can walk from your campsite but it will be tiring depending on your fitness level. From campsite 3 it would take 2-3 mins down (fairly easy unless you have bad knees) to the stairway and another 1-2 mins to the river. The stairway is well built and looks new. We did not pass by the other campsites but I assume they aren't far away. Shower was cold but you get use to it. There is no door to the shower but it is enclosed enough to give privacy. Porta potty are cleaned every Wednesday. We have our own personal toilet so I can't tell you if the porta potties are good or bad. However, Terry takes really good care of the campsites so I assume they are clean for porta potties. Yes, I recommend Strange Ranch.

Site #6 - Forest Emersion Campsite
The property was beautiful, host was very accommodating, and we loved the river. Spent most of our time swimming and exploring there. We did the stream ecology workshop, which was educational and fun. However, we found site #6 to be difficult and would not stay at that site again. The best sites are definitely #1 and 2 by the river. Site 6 is located up a very steep dirt road, and we were uncomfortable driving an all wheel drive van up or down the hill. It was also a very steep walk down to the porta potty, and extremely steep long walk to the river.

Our experience at Terry's land was amazing, it’s simply breathtaking! The amenities (water and electricity) were so helpful. The restrooms were always clean. Terry’s hospitality was amazing, we will definitely be back.

This was a stellar spot to camp. Gorgeous views & sounds of the river valley - nice stargazing and birdwatching too. The river itself has an awesome deep swimming hole, and lots of other lovely spots to swim in or sit by both upstream and downstream by the crystal clear water. Terry was an excellent host - incredibly generous in sharing not only this special piece of land, but also his phenomenal knowledge of the ecology, hydrology, and geology of the site. The campsite was very well setup and clearly maintained with a lot of love and hard work.

Site #3 - Road Bend Camp
We had an incredible stay at Site #3 and cannot thank Terry as a Superhost or recommend it enough! We were 2 families w 4 kids, ages 9 to 14. We all LOVED IT! The property itself is beautiful, even prettier than the photos, with the major highlight being the river just a short walk down the mountain. It was absolutely perfect for swimming and cooling off. We had water shoes and hiked up and down the river through the little cascades. The old gold mining cave on-site added such a unique adventure to the whole experience. Bring flashlights, headlamps, and if you got em, rain boots for the deep pools in the cave. Terry, even told us about the history of the 49ers and prehistoric people who went through the land before. One of our campers even found a gold flake in the river! As far as the layout goes, the campground was nicely organized with their a fire pit (for now), picnic table, and shade. Terry has done a great job ensuring there's plenty of space between the sites, so you get a great sense of privacy and peace without feeling crowded by neighbors. The porta-potty was kept clean and there's clean running water, always a huge plus when camping. To top it all off, the owners, Terry and his fam were incredibly nice, welcoming, and friendly from the moment we arrived, checking in regularly on our needs. Special shoutout to their dog, Whiskey, who is officially the best campground host ever! We'll definitely be back. Thank you for sharing your beautiful property with us!

Site #4 - Canyon View Campsite
Will never get over the fact that Terry is generous enough to open his land up to be shared. It’s truly a wonderland. Site 4 is my favorite with a sweeping view of one of the more gorgeous vistas I’ve ever seen. With power and water on the site we felt positively spoiled! Then down the hill to the river where the beautiful Mokelumne is waiting. we walked up stream a bit and found our own slice of heaven. Absolutely private and positively blissful. Terry is a kind and responsive host. We will be thrilled to be back as long as Terry will have us!

Site #6 - Forest Emersion Campsite
We had an amazing weekend at Strange Ranch! It was definitely up there with one of my best camping experiences I’ve ever had. We stayed at site 6 which was private, cozy, and shielded from wind. The campsite had the added plus of an electrical outlet, a water hose, and a nearby clean portapotty which was awesome. Pro tip make sure you are prepared for steep hills coming into the campgrounds! The swimming creek was beautiful and charming as well. I hope to return again sometime. Thanks for everything Terry!

My family and I loved our stay at Strange Ranch. We tent camped for 3 nights at campsite #1. The site was well maintained and the river view was beautiful. The sounds of the river lulled us all into a good night’s sleep each night and the swimming hole kept my kiddo occupied all day. It was a lovely place to unplug for the weekend.

Site #2 - Gold Mine River Overlook
We spent two amazing nights here with the family, our pups, and the grandparents, and wow… this place completely blew us away! If you’re booking, Site #2 gets our vote! It has lots of shade (though I’d still bring a canopy), and it’s just a short walk to the bathroom, shower, and the stairs down to the river. The communal riverfront area was such a bonus, with a fire pit, chairs, a deep swimming hole, and a shallow wading area for the littles. River was long enough to hike and have your own little oasis down the way. It was the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation while still feeling like a true off-the-grid escape. Evenings around the campfire and falling asleep to the sound of the river were absolute perfection. Even our toddler slept like a champ! A huge thank you to Terry & whiskey for creating and maintaining such a stunning campsite. Everything was so well cared for, and the bathrooms were always clean, which made the stay even better. We can’t wait to come back!

Since I don’t have four-wheel drive, Site 4 was my only option—and it turned out to be perfect. It was incredibly private, with no other campers able to see my campsite. The bathroom was nearby and exceptionally clean. The site also had water, electricity, and convenient trash cans. They recently built wooden shelters over the picnic tables, which was a really nice addition. The river is beautiful and perfect for wading or swimming. The walk down from my campsite to the river is a bit challenging, and the hike back up is definitely a workout! The campground host, Terry, was wonderful and even offered to drive me up and down the hill. Thanks, Terry, for your kindness and hospitality! I’ll be back!

We loved this campsite! Such a beautiful view and property. Our site number 1 was overlooking the creek and right next to the stairs down to the creek. The creek has a great little beach and swimming area and fun little areas to explore up and down the creek. It was very peaceful and we hardly saw any other campers

Site #4 - Canyon View Campsite
We had a really nice time at Strange Ranch. We had site 4 which was very private, which only helped us enjoy the quiet and views even more. I stayed with my husband and our 2 young kids. My son (5) LOVED the swimming hole, we had a great time hanging out in the super fresh river. We jumped off rocks, fished - my husband and son caught a brown trout. We explored a bit and found the gold mine - a huge hit with my 5 year old. You can tell the owners have put a lot of work into keeping the grounds functional and nice for guests. I think my golden retriever had the best time out of all of us, haha. She spent almost all waking hours in the river and exploring. My only comment, which is really specific to us is that trekking down to the river with our 1 year and everything a baby requires was a bit of a chore but again - super specific to our family. Everything was clean, and even though we didn’t get to meet the hosts, they were very communicative and gave us lots of great tips!

Site #4 - Canyon View Campsite
We stayed at campsite #4, the only site that doesn’t require AWD and it did not disappoint! Our site had a fire pit, gazebo, water, partial shading and a view of the BLM mountain side that changes colors as the sun sets. From our site, you couldn’t hear and see any of the other campsites. I highly recommended visiting the river onsite where you can find another fire pit, and a bunch of pools of waters in either direction of the river. Terry was a terrific host! Detailed, helpful, responsive, and so knowledgeable about the land he’s been developing for 30+ years. We’ll definitely be back!

We loved staying at this campsite! The property owners put a lot of work into making these campsites accommodating and comfortable. Campsite # 1 was definitely the best because it was closest to the water and you could hear it rushing all day/night. The shade structure makes a huge difference too! The beach and the swimming hole are the best part. The owners poured concrete over some of the rocks in the river to make entry/exit a little easier (but water shoes area are a must). It was blazing hot, but the creek spot was where we hung out all day and the water kept us very cool. I just loved being there and I can't wait to go back! The owners were very proud of the property and super accommodating. Overall, a great experience!

Terry was incredibly hospitable and kind during our stay. We were shocked with the beauty of the property and river. Truly a gem. Terry and his son were great in hosting us! We loved swimming the river! Was beautiful!

We stayed at site 4, it was very spacious, there was a slight mistake & Terry's was so apologetic & gave us some fire wood. Such a beautiful spot, especially at night with all the stars and the sound of the river. 10 out of 10 would come back!

Site #4 - Canyon View Campsite
Strange Ranch is breathtaking! The river’s flow is mesmerizing and the views astound. The river valley is steep sloped causing the rivers sound to carry up the valley. Watching the sunrise creep into the gouge is awe inspiring! During our trip the weather brought rain into the valley, watching the birds taking refuge in the trees and hiss of rain brought tranquility and peace. This is just an awesome natural environment shared by the gracious nature of Terry and Whiskey The valley has a long and rich history of gold prospecting and mining and the artifacts on site prove it Terry shared with us some of that history and we appreciated it very much. The sites are very nice 1 and 2 are literally above the river roughly 800 feet, 3 is about a thousand yards above the river, 4 is up the slope nearer the top and situated right on the top of the slope , 5 is above 4 and nestled into the trees , six is the highest up and a nice secluded site up a steep sloped All in all Terry has gone to great lengths to make this a very good and well thought out place to camp. He is a gracious host and we had a fantastic time.

Site #6 - Forest Emersion Campsite
We had a great time at Site #6 and Terry was a fantastic host. The river was scenic and an idyllic place to lounge around on a sunny day. Site #6 is perched up at a high point on the property with a beautiful vista and has plentiful shade. It’s great to have a fire pit, water and electricity right at the site. From Site #6 it was a bit of steep climb down to the port-a-potty and this time of year (mid-May) had a good amount of mosquitos. Nonetheless, we truly enjoyed our time!

Site #4 - Canyon View Campsite
What a magical piece of land. For warmer months, Strange Ranch is now ranked at the top of our favorite camp sites. The swimming hole is very nice if you don’t mind slightly chilly water. It’s peaceful, beautiful and family friendly. Thank you Terry!

Site #3 - Road Bend Camp
Strange Ranch and site 3 was perfect for us. Terry is an incredible host and this Hipcamp experience was the best we have had so far. The site had everything we needed. We felt remote but also close to the items we needed, bathrooms, shower, and the river! We will definitely plan another trip in the future to revisit this beautiful area.

Had an amazing weekend in campsite #6! Everything was very clean and well organized. The trip up and down the hill to the bathroom was a workout but well worth it. The access to the river was an experience! Would love to come back and try some of the other sites

This was the most beautiful, fun, and relaxing experience we’ve had camping so far. The views were amazingly beautiful of the river and mountains, my boyfriend and I were in awe the whole time. Terry was such an amazing host he was very knowledgeable and kind and he made sure we were good and tended to us very well. We will be back over the summer and we can’t wait!
