Secluded private river and forest camping on the South Fork Mokelumne River. The site has incredible views and a pristine private gold-bearing trout stream with Native American and gold mining history located in the Sierra Nevada foothills of northern Calaveras County. This unique property is adjacent to over 900 acres of public land and 2 miles of private stream for exploring. With a total of only 6 campsites, it is a great location for larger groups as well. All campsites have potable water spigots, 20 amps of electricity, and access to the river and cold/cool shower. Guests enjoy the ranch while swimming, floating, snorkeling, stream exploring, hiking, gold mine spelunking, forest immersion, birding, catch-and-release fishing for wild trout (excluding warmer water season from late June to mid-August), gold panning, or simply relaxing in a breathtaking environment – come fall in love with this special private ranch. After one stay, you will be a repeat guest. PLEASE NOTE: A 4-Wheel Drive vehicle or high clearance All-Wheel Drive vehicle is MANDATORY to access campsites 1, 2, 3, and 5 - while strictly 4-wd vehicles are MANDATORY to access site 6 due to the road incline and rock and gravel road surface. PLEASE PREPARE ACCORDINGLY. Campsite 4 is accessible with a 2-wd vehicle, but the steep and longer walk to the river and shower typically required an All-WD or 4-WD vehicle. Sites have beautiful open views of the property and river canyon with natural shade in the morning and late afternoon. Although shade structures have been constructed at Campsites 1, 3, and 4, the other sites are partially shaded by trees during portions of the day. Consider providing your own additional shade structure(s) as the direct sun can be an inconvenience at each site. Pets are limited to one large dog OR two small to medium sized dogs per campsite. There is a strict policy that all pet owners pick up waste from their dogs and that dogs be quiet, well-mannered, and under immediate control at all times so as not to disturb other campers. Please be aware that some wildlife species including rattlesnakes, skunks, mountain lions, and bears (very seldom) have been observed on the 117-acre property and could potentially be observed near the campsites. Manage your waste responsibly.

Site #1 - Premier Riverview Site

The premier Riverfront Campsite is situated just above the South Fork Mokelumne River and stairway, perfect for river access. 4-Wheel or All-Wheel Drive vehicles with high clearance is MANDATORY for access to this site. The site is on a flat, soil and rock area 40 feet above the river with fantastic views and sounds of the river. This is a spectacular campsite! The site accommodates tent camping or small self-contained RVs with a maximum capacity of 6 campers and 2 vehicles at this site. There are no RV hookups at this site, but does have potable well water and a small amount (20 amps) of electricity. The site contains a permanent 10ft x 12ft shade structure with an additional camping area under a large shaded oak tree that looks down onto the river. The site is located at one of the sunniest spots, so we recommend that you bring an additional shade structure. The river, shared beach, campfire pit, and swimming hole is a short walk down the staircase with handrails from the campsite. Strolls up or down from the beach will provide immediate privacy. The site is ideal for private group camping, especially by renting campsites 1 and 2 at the same time. Guests share the beach and river with all other campers. A shower with non-heated water is available to all campers. Portable 5-gallon solar showers can be used in the shower closure and are available for rent. Lawn games including cornhole and ladder-toss, and gold panning kits are available for rent. The site has a portable campfire pit for use during the burn season. Firewood is available for sale of approximately 10-12 pieces of seasoned oak wood per bundle. Restricted wood burning fires are allowed year-round at the group campfire pit located on the beach, including during the wildfire danger season. Garbage containers for both household garbage and recycled items are available. Pets are limited to one large dog OR two small to medium sized dogs per campsite. Gold Mine Campsite is located overlooking the South Fork Mokelumne River and above the entrance to the gold mine. The flat location is on an old roadbed that provides a separate access trail to the river downstream of the swimming hole. 4-Wheel or All-Wheel Drive with high clearance is MANDATORY for access to this site. The site has partial shade provided by oak trees with a flat, sunny area for tents. There is a maximum capacity of 6 campers and 2 vehicles at this site. We recommend bringing an additional shade structure if available for the sunnier areas. There is a partial vegetation barrier between Site 2 and Campsite 1 located approximately 200 feet away, with private views and sounds of the river, forest, and canyon. The river, beach, large campfire pit, and swimming hole are a very short walk away via the staircase, and are shared by all campers. Short strolls along the trails up or down from the beach will provide immediate privacy. There are no RV hookups at this site, but it does have potable well water and a small amount (20 amps) of electricity. A shower with non-heated water is available to the site for use by all campers. Portable 5-gallon solar showers can be used in the shower closure and are available for rent. Lawn games including cornhole and ladder-toss and gold panning kits are available for rent. Road Bend Campsite is an 1,100ft2 site located above the South Fork Mokelumne River and campsites 1 and 2 with views of mountaintop ridges, river canyon and public land, and views and sounds of the river. A 4-Wheel or All-Wheel Drive vehicle with high clearance is MANDATORY for access to this site. The flat campsite location is off the access road to the river and is an approximately 450 feet walk (3-4 minutes) down the steep access road to the shower, bathroom, river, and beach. There is a maximum capacity of 6 campers and 2 vehicles at this site. We recently added a 10ft x 12ft permanent shade structure and an additional 500 ft2 tent camping extension to increase the potential number of campers using the site. There are no RV hookups at this site, but it does have potable well water and a small amount (20 amps) of electricity. Guests may use a small quiet generator if necessary. Guests will have access to the shower and portable toilet near Campsites #1 and #2. The shower has non-heated, cool water and is available to all campers. Portable 5-gallon solar showers can be used in the shower closure and are available for rent. Lawn games including cornhole and ladder-toss, and gold panning kits are available for rent. The campsite has a portable campfire pit for use during the non-wildfire season. Firewood is available for sale of 10-12 pieces per bundle of seasoned oak wood. The Canyon Views Campsite is the most private campsite with 2-wd vehicle access to the 1,500+ sq ft bench area nestled amongst the oak and pine trees with panoramic views of the mountains and canyon, and sound of the river flowing below. The campsite has great views, sunsets and sounds of the river. This site is easily accessible with a 2-wd vehicle and amenities. The site has access to a potable well water, 20 amps of 110V electricity, nearby portable toilet, and portable campfire pit - or bring your own propane campfire. The campsite has a maximum capacity of 6 campers and 2 vehicles. Enjoy the river or hiking the property from a more secluded campsite with access to full amenities. The river is approximately 1550 ft down the steeper lower access road. It is recommended to drive a 4-WD or high clearance AWD vehicle down to the river access parking area. to avoid the long, steep return hike. The privacy, views, and sounds of river compensate for the distance from the river. The site has a permanent 10x12 ft shade structure. This site is accessible only with a 4-wd vehicle. The site has a potable well water, 20 amps of 110V electricity, campfire pit, and nearby portable toilet approximately 350 ft down the acroad. You can use your own small propane campfire. The site has a maximum capacity of 8 campers and 2 vehicles. Enjoy the river or hiking the property from a more secluded campsite with access to full amenities. The shower and river access is approximately 1700 ft down the steeper road from the campsite. The views, surrounding trees, bird life, and solitude compensate for the distance from the river. It is highly recommended to bring a 4-wd vehicle to drive down to the river access parking area to enjoy the river and shower facilities because of the long downhill walk. We had the absolute best time ever. The pictures look amazing and they do zero just on just how beautiful this property actually is. Looks straight out of a fairytale. The host couldn't have been nicer. They greeted us at the gate and drove down with us to give us a run down of the camp and how everything works. 4 wheel drive is a must to get to campsite. 10/10 experience and will be coming back!

Beautiful spot with great views of the river and mountain side. Would recommend only doing a small trailer 16ft or under due to tight turns and minimal turning area. Host was responsive and great. Definitely recommend this to anyone who needs a peaceful weekend off grid. Also super cool old gold mine below campsite #2 definitely recommend checking it out as well as hiking along the river where you will find old mining equipment.

My husband and I camped here for our anniversary and it was amazing! We got lucky and were the only campers, so Terry was very generous and let us have our pick of sites. We had initially booked site 4 for the privacy and views, but once we got there the clear choice was site 1. The view was absolutely stunning, the easy access to the river was a god send in the 99F weather, and the proximity to the shower, toilet, and sink was ideal. Terry was a fantastic host, he greeted us with his dog Whiskey, set out fire wood to use on the beach, and was the overall friendly and a joy to talk to. We spent most of our days in the creek, it was so peaceful and refreshing, and our nights were spent looking up at the sky (no light pollution). We felt truly secluded and at peace, but I think if there were other campers there we wouldn’t have had much privacy and may have felt differently. Some tips: 4WD is a MUST, use heavy duty stakes for your tent as the ground is very hard, and wear water shoes in the creek! Terry, thank you so much for sharing your beautiful land with us! It is clear how much care, thought, and work you put into making it what it is today. It’s also clear how much you love and enjoy it as well. We will definitely be coming back!

Wonderful site. Terry is very nice and knowledgeable of the area. He welcome's guests with consistent check ins. Site has water and power and shade. Site 3 where we stayed at did not unfortunately, have power due to an issue with the generator which didn’t really change our trip at all. Terry offered other power solutions at his residence. Again Terry is very on the ball with checking with all the guests. As a family that camps often, we always recommend bringing a source of your own power, water, gps, etc in case of these incidents if you’re running a fridge or anything of the sort. The landscape is beautiful with more than enough to do! One of the better Hipcamps that we have stayed at! Would definitely recommend.

This was our second summer visiting Terry’s campsites and we had such a wonderful time! It’s just me and my two kids, and they love the river, and surrounding area. We ventured into Volcano this year and it helped break up the hottest part of the day. We will definitely look to visit again.

Terry was an absolutely incredible host, and this Hipcamp property completely exceeded our expectations. He generously upgraded us at no charge to a campsite closer to the river, and when we realized we had somehow forgotten the tent poles for our tent, he even lent us a tent and saved our entire camping trip! The property itself is beautiful. We loved spending time by the river and exploring the little river beaches, the mine, and the trails throughout the property. The campsites are spacious, peaceful, and give you plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the surroundings. Between Terry’s hospitality and how much there is to explore, this was easily one of our favorite camping experiences. We had such a wonderful weekend and will absolutely be back. Truly amazing all around!

Terry was awesome host and has done amazing landscaping on his property . The camps are level enough for a good night’s sleep and you cant beat the views from the side of the mountain they’re perched on. A water spigot at each camp made things easier and the shower and bathrooms were super clean. The swimming hole is small but so is the river. It was definitely big enough to cool off in the 100 degree weather we got. Even though the first night we were there, there was an arguing couple at the site next to us, we couldn't hear them once we were in our site and luckily they left the next morning. It was paradise when we had the place to ourselves. Would have stayed longer if we could have, but we’ll definitely be back sometime soon.

We were a group of 4 camping for the birthday weekend. Site 1 is amazing because (1.) you have the benefit of the view and amazing starry nights; (2.) you are just a few steps away from the water. The water is cool and refreshing. We chilled there from 10am - 6pm in tubes and lounge chairs Terry provided. Highly recommend coming here!

We had an amazing time at strange ranch! I loved the swimming hole, the mine, and the showers. Porta potties were very clean and it was nice having a big sink to wash my hands nearby. Our dog loved exploring, it was like disneyland for her.

The view was incredible from our site, and every other we passed. The hike down from our site was insane, if you got the skills to bring food and such, up and down the steep hike, it’s totally worth. I would recommend 4wd if you have it!! The hike is just a steep stair case if can you get campsite 1. Something we didn’t like, the bathrooms were in need of a touch up and drain, but the owners were on vacation for the summer so I’ll forgive it. Pick up your trash Leave it better then you left it 9.5/10 recommend

Our stay at Strange Ranch was one of our favorite camping experiences ever. We tent camped at site #1. The ground was perfect for our setup, and you cannot beat the proximity to the water as it sits right at the top of the stairs that lead straight down to the private river beach. My boys absolutely loved it and swam in the swimming hole for hours! We even explored the mine shaft and did a little bit of gold panning in between with a kit we rented from Terry. No campfires were allowed at our site during our stay because of the fire ban, but the communal fire pit down on the beach more than made up for it. Falling asleep to the sounds of the river was wonderful. Terry is an awesome, attentive host who takes massive pride in keeping the ranch and shared amenities (like the clean porta-potties, sink for dishes, and cool-water shower) in pristine condition. Communication was exceptional from beginning to end. He’s a wealth of knowledge and a great conversationalist. We will be back!

The beach area right by our site got crowded because all the sites were booked out, but a quick hike up or down the river and you’ve got the whole place to yourself. Terry is a great host and checked in on us shortly after we arrived. Take the AWD/4WD requirement seriously. Steep dirt roads to get to sites. Saw a truck struggle to get back up to his site.

Site #2 - Gold Mine River Overlook
Lovely location tucked away from the bustle of town. Close proximity to the rushing water. Water and toilets were conveniently located and clean. We had a wonderful time.

Site #3 - Road Bend Camp
Give Terry (& Whisky 🐶) their flowers!!! 💐 This was an AMAZING experience - even with some summer heat. The site was as described and coming from campsites with zero amenities, having per-site water hookup was such a game changer! (I would not drink from it tho...its more for 'camp cleaning' 😂) Terry was amazing, accommodating, friendly, and super helpful. We have a AWD/Tesla Model 3 and for site 1 it was a littttle tricky because of the clearance, but Terry was kind enough to fill in some spots along the path with gravel before we left 😭. Other lil tidbits: - The river was *chefs kiss* - very easily accessible - bathrooms were a little far but very clean - the newly built awning structure was amazing, but definitely bring another tarp/awning for sundown (which Terry mentioned beforehand so we came prepared!) - definitely hose down the dirt area with water (as per Terry!) because when other cars drive past Site #1 to their sites downward, the dust is a bit much - definitely need at least AWD and the more clearance your car has the better! I wish we got to chat more with Terry and maybe do one of their excursions but we brought our dog so we isolated ourselves a bit. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Site #5 - Oak Woodland Campsite
We stayed in site five and it was a great campsite. Plenty of shade and open room and the power and water are such a great amenity. The river is fun to hangout at, plenty of different off shoots to chill out

Site #4 - Canyon View Campsite
Terry was so kind to share his property with all of us campers. This was our first time using HipCamp and Terry has set the benchmark very high! He greeted us and then escorted us to our site. We booked site 4 with a 16 foot camper. Terry recommended we back it in. It could be a bit challenging but so worth it. The view was amazing. It’s everything you ever want in a campsite. There was a portable toilet a min away and it was cleaner than most public restrooms we have ever used. The water access spot is accessed by going down a number of concrete steps and then we are greeted by this beautiful stream with lots of small fish. As you walk across, you can see them swimming around in the water. We planted our camping chairs in the water and relaxed for all of Saturday. We couldn’t have been happier. On the way home, our kids were already asking when could we come back. And best of all, Terry has an awesome lab named “Whisky”, and our kids are now asking if we could have a Whisky at home too. Thank you so much for having us Terry and allowing us to create great family memories.
