The Button Farm Living History Center is a hands-on education facility dedicated to preserving the history of the Underground Railroad.
It is operated by the Menare Foundation through a long term lease agreement with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
Several of us who work for the non-profit live in the Button Farm house and share the land with our pigs, geese, chickens and lots of wildlife.

About the property
Located on a 66-acre plot just five miles from the Shenandoah River, our property offers amazing access to hiking and the outdoors while also keeping civilization within striking distance. Bear Chase Brewery is just a half mile walk across the street, and we are 15 miles from Purcellville.
The land and lodge used to be the summer home of a trained opera singer, whose singing could be heard throughout the mountain.
Your Host lives onsite in the stone house that also acts as a hostel for hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Built in the 1930's all from locally sourced hand-hammered stone, the house is open every night from 5pm - 9pm.
Note that we offer several campsites relatively close to each other, so you should expect to see and hear other campers on the property during your stay.
About the listing
Pitch your tent in a forested area just a short walk up from where you’ll park your car. Enjoy unbeatable proximity to hiking and panoramic views while still having basic amenities that ensure a comfortable stay.
You’ll have access to a composting pit toilet, and can access potable water from the tap in the lodge. That’s also where you can access hot showers. As noted above, we host Appalachian Trail thru hikers on the property, so you may see them hanging around or sleeping in the bunkhouse near the shared facilities. so please be respectful of hours when you come in for a shower.

For meals, we have picnic tables, and you are encouraged to cook over the fire pits that accompany each site. Please practice Leave No Trace practices during your stay, as the property has raccoons and other critters who will be drawn to any food scraps that are left behind.
Pets are allowed! Please keep them on leash during your stay.
Trash can be disposed of in dumpster up the hill

We are a Nature Retreat bordering Nature Conservancy land along a tributary and up and down the Rappahannock River. You can hike along the stream down to the river and up and down the river. You can fish and float the river. There are no trails so a moderate level of fitness and comfort in the forest is needed.
You can follow the water ways but it is wilderness. Camping there is primitive but available or you can camp or glamp at Earthwalk Ways Retreat. We are also adjacent to a 50 acre farm on the other side of the creek that is available for hiking. There is a reservoir nearby as well.
We are in the midst of the suburbs not far from Fredericksburg, which has some great historic and community places of interest.
Our facilities are private and we only rent to one or 2 guests at a time. You can glamp in a trailer, or car camp in a nice campground with power and water or you can go primitive and pack in. All spaces include access to our classical 11 circuit labyrinth and backyard gardens where you can enjoy zen rock garden and other contemplative nature crafts. There are some great extra's here as well including an outdoor jacuzzi and indoor infrared sauna and massage chair. These spa features are another great way to get your zen on here. I offer Forest Bathing and individual retreat support sessions, an quarterly sweat lodge and also vision quest support if people would like to experience a solo nature immersion feast.

From the flat land at the bottom to the top of the mountain, this is a place where you can find a spot to sit and think, draw, paint, nap, or identify over 30 medicinal plants in their natural habitats (absolutely NO harvesting of medicinals or wildflowers!). Listen to the many birds, spot the wildflowers.
Some areas are accessible by wheelchair, while others are not, but all areas offer something to sustain your spirit.
If you feel the need to explore the area, you are within walking distance of NotaViva Farm Brewery and Winery, 15 dirt road minutes from the new Sweet Run State Park one direction and Breaux Vineyard in the other direction. The Appalachian Trail is just over the top of the mountain and Harpers Ferry National Park is down the road and over the Shenandoah River.

1 night at Smith Ridge Harper's Ferry
The cabin was very well heated for hours in 30 degree and below weather. Well stocked with supplies, and Matt was helpful in providing freshly chopped firewood, lighter, and a grill! A big supply of drinking water and coffee. Had a great time having a bonfire the whole night. Porta potty was pretty decent too. Matt seemed like a cool host in general, and gave us great suggestions for hiking! Would recommend to anyone and I would probably hang out with him if he invited us.

This was my group’s second time camping at Smith Ridge, hosted by Matt. This time I had a bigger group (7 people, 5 tents, and room for more). We had a great time again, and the onsite firewood we were able to purchase kept us warm during the 25 degree weather! Another plus was the porta-potty across from where we parked so we didn’t have to dig a hole in the snow. My group will 100% keep returning to camp here!

The place is amazing! Me my wife and our fur baby loved everything about the place. It has a rustic vibe surrounded by farm animals and wild life! The only thing I would have changed was we didn’t stay long enough! The fresh eggs were amazing to have for breakfast, wish I would have got more than just a dozen. And Rodney, the host was such great guy. You have your own little private spot to just sit back and enjoy. We will definitely be coming back in the short future to see the horses, goats, and other animals again.

The property was very nice for my overnight pit stop and I'm sure it would be enjoyable for a longer stay. I was a little confused of where to go when entering the property but once I found the pond I was comfortable knowing I was in the right place. The 1.5 mile stretch of road off the main road is a little tight if you're full legal width but that is not a reason not to stay here, just a heads up, and no fault of the host.

Overview
About
Step back in time to the start of the U.S. Civil War at Manassas, Virginia, near Bull Run (a creek on the property). The rolling plains here mark not one, but two, battles that changed America forever. The visitor's center offers a personal perspective on the bloodiest conflict in American history.
Summertime represents the best season to see the battlefield as Rangers give guided tours. You can also BYOH, (bring your own horse) to explore the grounds just like the cavalryman did 150 years ago. A paved road allows for car tours, and hiking trails let you explore the grounds on foot.
The visitor's center is replete with artifacts, some of which were found on the battlefield itself. Cannons, historic buildings, and picket fences dot the landscape. It looks pretty much the same as it did back in the 1860s.
During the first battle, civilians spread out picnics with tea as they watched the armies advance towards each other. When the bullets started to fly, they fled with their horse-drawn carriages in a panic. People realized the war was serious at that point. You can have a picnic lunch (thankfully without the musket fire) on the grounds of this 5,000-acre park.
Both battles were Confederate victories. If the southern troops had marched another 30 miles to Washington DC, the war might have had a very different outcome.
Manassas Battlefield is large enough to make a day of it, especially if you love history and nature walks.

Very disappointed.
We enjoyed walking the fields at Manassas National Battlefield Park but we were disappointed to not be able to visit the Visitor Center or the other buildings due to the first day of the government/federal shut down. Even the bathrooms were closed!!
