The campsite is well-equipped with cooking facilities, comfortable communal spaces, and is dog-friendly, making it an ideal spot for travelers with pets. Love this camp ground and love our friendly host Hook. This place was perfect for a camp stay in Joshua Tree. The sunset and sunrise here is beautiful. Near town so don’t worry if you forgot ice or food. Hook made us feel so welcomed and we definitely enjoyed it.
We had a great time at Hippie Hideout Joshua Tree. Very great host, doing everything he can to makes his guests be at ease. We would definitely go back!
"Camp Ruffin' It" was my first camping experience ever. Well really I should say 'glamping'! Hook was there for anything we needed, at the same time we had our privacy too. Weather was perfect, shorts for the day and light jacket for the night. Hook set up some games around the site we played while cooking out and listening to music with friends. Their were even dogs running around greeting everyone! It was my buddy's birthday and we just had the best weekend. I highly recommend this site for anyone looking in the Joshua Tree area. We were so fortunate to have such a great host. Can't wait to come back !!!
Staying at Camp Ruffin It was ideal. Hook was extremely accommodating and helpful and the vibe on the property was super chill. We had two dogs with us and they had the freedom to roam around off leash while we were at the camp site. Hook was full of good information about Joshua Tree and the surrounding area. I was told we could not bring our dogs into the park by several friends, but that is not the case. We were able to bring our dogs, they just aren’t allowed on the trails, but there are plenty of picnic areas and campgrounds with ample places to roam with pups. Hook’s property and set-up is great! He has a kitchen, indoor and out door sitting areas, two fire places and plenty of outdoor games available. (Disk golf, horse shoes, bocce ball, etc) his property is well taken care of and I’m excited to go back to see the new additions he has planned. He is enjoyable to hang with and one morning even brought us hot wet towels to clean up with and warm us up! One day he directed us to Desert Hot Springs to massage and soak in the warm pools and was happy to watch our pups for a few hours for us. 5 gold stars from us, Hook, thank you for making our vacation perfect!
I met some friends in Joshua tree to camp. We have big dogs. We were attracted to camp Ruffin it because it claimed a leash free environment. Considering the fact that the park is restrictive for dogs, we decided to give this a try. We were not disappointed. I was thrilled with the space and the dog friendly environment. On top of that, Hook and Tonya were awesome. They bent over backwards to make us feel comfortable and they were knowledgeable about the area. We grilled them about everything lol. Super helpful and friendly.
I personally loved the campsites. Plenty of space and scenery. It's close to Joshua tree (the town) and a short drive to the park.
Hook was kind enough to dog sit while we went to the hot springs. My dog loved camping and running around. I will go back and also recommend Camp Ruffin it to my friends with dogs. 🐶🐕🏕
Hook is an incredible host, and his site is the perfect place to relax and explore in the desert. I'd recommend checking out the national park and exploring downtown Joshua Tree. Hook was super helpful and available to answer any questions. I can't recommend this camp enough!
Wow, what an amazing experience. Hook is not only a top-notch host, but also a fun and easy going guy to hang out with! His land is beautiful and not near any developments so you really feel like you're camping in with the Joshua trees. His land has a 360 unobstructed view of the Mohave. I've never seen stars so bright at night! He is also super close to the West Joshua Tree National Park entrance. We will be back!!!
Hook and his dogs (and his sweet land) were so awesome! My pals and I had an incredible few days despite it being a particularly windy weekend. I will definitely be returning, and would recommend to anyone who is trying to visit Jtree!!!!
Camp Ruffin' it was AWESOME! My friends and I had a great time, Hook is a phenomenal host, and everything went very smoothly. He was incredibly communicative from the get-go, super friendly, and a joy to be around. The site(s) are really well maintained, with lots of amenities to make your stay enjoyable, it's just around the corner for the park entrance and a few minutes drive from town. Would definitely recommend and stay again!
Camp Ruffi' it is amazing. Pictures don't really do the site justice. You're a short drive to Johua Tree and the Park, yet you feel a thousand miles away. Hook couldn't be a nicer, more accommodating host. Stay here! We loved it!
We just had a WONDERFUL weekend at Hippie Hideout. I would absolutely recommend this campsite to my friends.
Here are some of the highlights:
- Fantastic cooking facilities, including a propane grill with nice side burner, and a charcoal grill. They even have an oven! And they baked us cookies one night.
- Very nice outhouse - no running water yet, but the outhouse it very nicely set up with a pump sink, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, a mirror etc.
- Two beautiful Australian Shepherds we got to play with
- They provide some nice outdoor furniture, we still packed a few camping chairs but the extra furniture was a big plus
- They can easily provide some tips on local hikes and restaurants
- Overall very welcoming and friendly atmosphere
If you're thinking of staying near the part, stay with these guys! Just don't tell too many people so we can book a return trip
Hippie Hideout is a great, warm place for camping. There are multiple spots to set up your tent, and depending on what you're looking for, the host will help you settle right in. It's peaceful out here! You can truly relax. They have a great communal space with an equipped kitchen and a patio to relax and chill by the fireplace. They have cool games and activities to explore, so you'll never be bored. They continue to build and upgrade, so I'm excited to see what they develop over time. Highly recommend this place. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask them.
So where do I start. Our little adventure was completely unplanned and I booked Hippie Hideout on Dec 30 to arrive on New Year's Day, January 1st. Got a confirmation right away and a welcome message from Hook with directions to the spot. We (3 people and a dog) arrived around 4pm, just before sunset, to realize we would be the only guests on the land. The camp group had 3 spots so we pretty much had our pick of the best one- #2 in my opinion. We barely had enough blankets and food with us. Hook provided additional tent and sleeping bags, set up the fireplace, and cooked up some warm food. He also constructed a leash zip-line for our pooch to enjoy the camp ground while staying safe on the leash. After the sunset we sat on the deck, next to the fire, sipping on drinks, listening to music, and watching Christmas lights illuminating the desert. At that point we knew, we would be staying 2 nights. The next morning we got up ready to explore Joshua Tree and Hook had some fixings ready to make breakfast. We drove around the park all day to come back to the camp happy and exhausted. Once again, we had some snacks ready and just chilled around the fire watching the stars. It was so great of Hook to show my son "the ropes" of camping, interacting with nature, making and maintaining a fire. It was a perfect getaway and we will definitely be back.
This is hands down one of the best places that we have ever camped at in the JTree area. My friends and I decided last minute to go to JTree for New Years Eve. We were lucky enough to find a spot at Camp Ruffin' it and the rest was pure glamping bliss. The host "Hook" has created the perfect mix of comfort and off the grid camping on a piece of land that is breathtakingly beautiful. In our group we had newbies, diehard campers, and in-between, and EVERYONE was ecstatic with their experience at this magical destination. And our dogs were probably the happiest of all and loved being able to play and explore off leash, far from roads, other campers, or other dangers that would have restricted them to leashes.
I really can't say enough about this spot and will DEFINITELY go back again and again! Thank you Hook!!!
What a great year to bring in the New Year. We had a fairly large group (8 folks) and couldn’t get a camp site in Joshua Tree proper. Hook has a great set up. Plenty of space, super close to the park, and is a phenomenal host. We stayed two nights, shot into the park to go climb for the day and then returned to the camp. There are amenities on the camp site (hot plates for cooking, fireplace on the deck for a fire, music, commode etc). What really makes the campsite great are the quality folks that run it. They are so friendly, and just want to see their guests have a blast. Solid trip, would definitely recommend it for anyone.
Our Thanksgiving stay at Camp Ruffin' It was amazing. Keith and Tanya were extremely friendly and accommodating hosts and the grounds were beautiful! Plenty of space to set up camp and Joshua Trees surrounded the whole area. The camp kitchen and common space offered a super comfortable space to unwind after climbing all day in the park. If you're lucky, Tanya will whip up the greatest carmel/butterscotch popcorn you've ever had. Really looking forward to going back to this place! Thanks again guys!
Hook was a fantastic host for our long holiday weekend stay. He was very accommodating, helpful and we had a great time at his desert property. Highly recommend!
Our stay was an amazing experience. Everything from the camp site itself and the hosts. From start to finish we had excellent communication and we knew exactly what to expect upon arrival.
The hosts were incredibly nice and had the perfect amount of interest and involvement in our group, but also recognized we were here and let us be, even when they didn't have to. We opted for them to do breakfast for us one morning and honestly, we should have done 2. The food was perfect.
The other part that was the most touch of class from out hosts is they have two dogs on property, and well, dogs will be dogs. Everything was handled with the utmost respect and class throughout the trip. Also, we did bring two dogs, they even offered to hang with them while we went in the park.
We will most certainly be back and visit again, I highly recommend for anyone going to the area.
WOW! I cannot say enough good things about this place. Don't miss out on the chance to camp here!
The best aspect of this trip that made it all come together were the wonderful hosts; Hook & Tonya! They were kind, hospitable and oh so sweet. Hook was very responsive from the beginning with some tips to help some of our first-time campers prepare for the experience. And Tonya is a world class campfire chef! (Worth every penny to pay for the meals :) especially the campfire caramel corn!!!!) You can tell they both really care about the place and want everyone to have a good time!
The campsite itself is flat and cleared while being very easy to pitch a tent. Flip flops worked just fine for us! Hook & Tonya make it even easier by offering a pop-up RV and extra 2-person tent. There's even a bedroom with a very comfy mattress. Also, there is no running water and no electricity - although they do have a generator you can hook up to your car (it may be small, but actually is fairly powerful!) While it was secluded from the touristy center of Joshua Tree, it was still very close to general stores (like Walmart). So in general, bring lots of water and be prepared to unplug while here :)
This is truly a dog-friendly place. We had a large group and ended up bringing 5 pups! They all had a great time :) Though be careful of chollas (little prickly plants). Otherwise, all the dogs had a nice time and got along well with Bourbon and Nook (the camp's own pups).
The heat was not a problem for us - though it was expected to be quite hot, the fans and shade of the containers were perfect, and the breeze was cool. We even brought some water balloons to ambush each other with! The pups were fine in the shade during the day and given ice water. It was perfectly cool at night for everyone :) Other than heat, be aware of the wind! It can get strong, but it's absolutely fine with sturdy stakes in the ground.
This is the perfect spot for any type of camper. Play horseshoes with Hook, start a campfire with Tonya, play around with Bourbon and Nook - whatever you do, you're guaranteed to have an incredible time. Couldn't have asked for a more perfect experience!
Ultimately, you simply can't miss out on Camp Ruffin' It!
We had such a blast in Camp Ruffin' it hanging with our hosts and his dogs for the day! His property is beautiful with stunning views of the desert valley below. Sunsets/Sunrise up here are stunning and stargazing in his comfy "orbital" sofa was awesome! Thanks for having us Hook, hope to return soon :)
