Weekend Trip to The Hideaway at Hole In The Wall

What a fun and unique spot! Campsite was great, had so many extra amenities and Thomas & crew were so friendly and knowledgeable about the land. Not secluded from other campers which we were fine with but just to note. The water is about a 5-10 minute walk and a little steep/unsteady in some areas. We were fine but just something to note. My dog LOVED the area too - very dog friendly! Definitely planning on coming back and exploring more of this beautiful area.

What a trip, in all ways. Thomas, the owner and caretaker are fabulous humans full of great stories! It was amazing to have our dogs off-leash which is most important to us. The sites are under development and looking great with a ton of potential. The bridge was a challenge (20ft trailer) but we managed just fine. We had a blast and left with some amazing memories. Looking forward to our next trip.

Beautiful setting, very peaceful, many little details made for a comfortable stay. Outdoor, kitchen, fire pit, hammock, and lots of places to relax. No place to shower on site. But there is a spring within driving distance that made for a nice shower in the afternoon.

This was a great place to camp! It was quiet and peaceful, and the people who run it are very sweet and accommodating. Thomas was a knowledgeable host and even taught us a few things about plants that they have growing on the land. The shower and sink set-up works nicely and was a big plus. The campground is a super short walk away from the hole-in-the-wall swimming hole, which was dreamy and we spent both days exploring there. Definitely would recommend to a friend and/or come back here when camping in NorCal or just passing through.

We stayed at Waterfall Camp – site #2 Pygmy Grove and had such an amazing experience! We camped with our tent and were blown away by all the thoughtful touches. The site had everything we needed and more—clean bathrooms, hot showers, a dishwashing station, a smokeless fire pit with a grill, cozy outdoor blankets, and hammocks at each site. It felt super comfortable while still being immersed in nature. The host was fantastic—super down to earth and incredibly helpful. He even helped us out during a minor crisis (which was quickly averted thanks to him). We felt really well taken care of, which made the trip even better. We’re already planning our next stay and can’t recommend this spot enough to anyone looking for a peaceful, well-equipped place to camp!

2 nights at Glynraven Gardens

Clark was such a kind host and this was such a wonderful first glamping experience! Originally, we booked the lotus bell tent but the weather in June was unexpectedly cold. Clark showed us around the property and we ended up staying in the airstream because it had heat/AC. It also has its own patio and view of the valley. It’s also a bit quieter and more secluded than the other tent sites as the peacocks and chickens seemed to stay around the areas closer to the pool.

We absolutely loved our visit to Lucky Penny. Hillary and her family were so welcoming and made us feel comfortable right away. The communal kitchen was such a treat and made meal preparation easy. The facilities were clean and well taken care of and full of extra little thoughtful touches. My kids thought it was "the most magical place" ever. We would love to visit again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to friends.

We loved the rustic, off-grid, hippie-commune vibe--the propane-heated shower was a welcome bonus. Tent sites are laid out on a ridge above clear turquoise waters of a spring-fed river that passes through the iconic hole-in-the-wall. Amazing camp with great hosts!

My family enjoyed our stay at Jo's meadow. We pitched our tent outside the cabin and two of us slept in the tent and two in the cabin. The bed was comfortable and we were cozy. Sojourna accommodated a special request and answered all of my questions. I really appreciated how helpful she was. The farm is a quiet peaceful spot (with amazing stars, too!).

Beautiful location. Creative and artistic shared spaces, including wonderfully equipped shared kitchen and private outdoor showers with hot water. There was a shed with lots of toys for our four year old to choose from, which made his day. We were received warmly, introduced to two darling kittens, and lived exploring the grounds.

Or come to the communal fire near the bathhouse for sharing some time with family and the few other campers that may be there. Bringing your own wood is welcome. The coastal bike and hike trails are many. From South of Ft Bragg to the Sand Dunes near Ward Ave. you can travel over 7 miles one way and go down to quiet little beach coves along the way. Meadow Farm is a nonprofit 501c3 with goals of coastal food security, disaster preparation and sheltering, carbon sequestering and forest restoration. We offer native plant tours on or off site with advance notice. We like our dog companions! Two McNab collies, Moxie and Shama live here and may bark at first...still very friendly and social with people and other dogs.. There are several dog friendly off-leash areas such as, Noyo North Harbor Beach, Seaside Beach and dog parks in both Ft Bragg and Mendocino. Our farm is dog friendly tho we wish pets to be kept close, must be neutered and friendly to other dogs and people. Please be sure to bury or bag the waste. Speaking of waste, Meadow Farm strives to reduce waste by avoiding plastic as much as possible, recycling what we can and composting our veggie scraps. Please bring your own waste receptacles and take them along when you go. We take ours to the Caspar Transfer Station which is open Saturday through Wednesday... the location and hours can be found online. Our water is from a deep well and we periodically test it for bacteria. It is cold and delicious. Our irrigation pipes that have spigots and hoses at each camp are safe for drinking, cooking and cleaning. Our solar pump moves water into storage tanks that provide all the water to the farm. It is very important that the water valves on your camp spigot is turned off (gently please) to avoid losing 2500 gallons of water in a short time. If you see a leak or break in a line please contact us immediately. There are also water shut offs for the camps on the west side of the Farm House if you are unable to reach us right away.. When doing dishes we request that you use the strainer to catch food particles from the dish water and toss them in your trash or compost bucket. If you have vegetable waste let us know and we can pick them up for adding to the worm bins or composting piles. We make worm "tea" fertilizer and rich soil from these offerings. No animal products or oil please... a few egg shells are okay. We do have the usual wildlife though we haven't had problems with them. Ravens will raid your camp if food or bags are left out while you are away. From dusk to dawn keep children and pets close. We coexist well here with the critters...and glad to have them. Outlets to CHARGE YOUR PHONE and DEVICES at the Stage and in the kitchen. Fruit trees and gardens dot the property. Feel free to pick a piece of fruit. We almost always have organic fresh eggs from the chickens for sale, The Camp Store has a variety of items such as jam, organic veggies, flowers, etc. See the list on the fridge. We're in a wooded country neighborhood where lots of folks have dogs, so you might hear some barking and see some neighbors. Very occasionally we see a dog off leash. We ask that you keep your dogs on leash at all times, as we have cats and chickens. We encourage you to enjoy the forest, but do be aware that there is poison oak. If you don't know what it looks like we can show you. Arrive anytime after 1pm. Check out is at noon, but you can often stay later if we don't have other campers arriving to your site. If your plans change, just let us know at least 24 hours before check-in and you'll get a full refund.

Overview

About

There are 7,630 feet of rugged coastline framed by hardy coastal redwoods. Highway 1 even runs right through the park on a cool arched bridge that looks like Bixby Bridge's little brother.

Take in a picnic beside the Devil’s Punch Bowl, a large collapsed sea cave with churning water. Frolic on the beach where you can swim, skin dive and go rock fishing. Keep an eye out for the “blowhole,” which cannot be missed when the surging high tide comes in.

On the other side of Highway 1 is a forest wonderland straight out of Jurassic Park. Take the Fern Canyon Trail and discover a gulch with ferns climbing the walls on both sides. Bonus: there is a gorgeous 36-foot waterfall at the halfway mark.

Stay over in one of the park’s 30 campsites. They can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs up to 24 feet long.

When to go

The best time to visit Russian Gulch State Park is during the spring and summer when the weather is temperate and the wildflowers are in bloom. Winter brings rain, and the campground is closed until April 1st, making late fall through early spring less ideal for visits.

Know before you go

Check for any trail or campground closures before your visit, especially during the off-season.
Pets are welcome in certain areas, but must be leashed and are not allowed on all trails.
Prepare for changeable weather by dressing in layers and bringing waterproof gear.
Accessible facilities are available; call ahead to reserve a beach wheelchair at least seven days in advance.
Remember to practice safety near the ocean and bluffs, as rogue waves and steep cliffs can be dangerous.

Russian Gulch Campground

27 is the best site - one of the largest, quietest & definitely the most private/ furthest from neighbours. Sites 25, 26 & 28 are also good for the same reasons. 22 and 23 would be our choices if all the above are taken (nice, but slightly smaller). 21 is ADA and not really space for a tent. 18, 19 and 20 are more exposed, & sites 29 & 30 are basically on the same plot, so no privacy. Sites 1-20 have a risk of noise from the highway, if you're sensitive to that kind of thing (21-30 are VERY quiet traffic-wise). Overall definitely a more peaceful alternative to Van Damme, with hiking trails directly from the sites, and just under a ten minute drive from Mendocino.

Russian Gulch Campground

We stayed here. Our camp host, John was wonderful, even gifted us free firewood leftover from another camper, and mapped out a shortcut to the waterfalls (very helpful with three small kids!). The bathrooms were cleaned each morning and the showers were clean. One night, we had a loud, cursing neighbor who blasted his music, but overall, our experience was wonderful. The village of Mendocino is 2 miles away and fun to explore.

Russian Gulch Campground

Campsite #25 is the most private spot as it doesn't face any other spots and is bordered on both sides with thick, high and lush plants. A quietly burbling creek runs directly behind the campsite. #25 has it's own potable water spigot, the food locker looks brand new and is very clean and the two closest bathrooms have flush toilets, plentiful toilet paper, sinks, mirrors and interior lights. They are well-maintained and didn't smell at all. The fire ring's grate is bent though. Firewood can be delivered for $7/bundle from the camp host.

Russian Gulch Campground

Peaceful little campground near Mendocino. Encountered sea mammals and a couple of raccoons. It's under the highway, but you can't hear it from the campground. Cute little stream runs through the grounds. We stayed for two nights and really enjoyed this spot a few hours north of San Francisco! Great weekend getaway.
