Although the property is located in the country, it is located along a state highway for easy access and there are three towns and many amenities and recreational venues within 15 minutes drive. Goldie is open for the summer! Goldie is an original early 1900's wooden caboose that ran on the DMIR railroad. She was re-designed in 1912 to be safer on the tracks (and her length extended so she wouldn't fall over). She ran the tracks of the Iron Range until retirement in 1968. She's been fully renovated with a few modern conveniences. We've re-used as much of the original wood as possible, and repurposed many things into other things so that we could keep the history alive. My husband is the carpenter that brought her to life and I'm the one that gave her some paint and design. Now, she's ready for people again, and to keep telling her story to others. Please...be our guest...and let Goldie be your host. The caboose sits about 50 yards from the house, but it tucked into the trees and feels very private. There is a private trail that leads from the caboose to the lake. Goldie has a max occupancy of 2 people due to space constraints. Please no pets since there are wooden floors. If you have a service dog, of course it is welcome - please reach out to me about that detail. They are super friendly, but they will come to visit you at the lake. Our lake is an "environmental lake" so while we keep a small beach area that you are welcome to use, it is not free of lily pads or weeds. It's simple, but fully swimm-able (the Golden Retriever keeps the first 8 feet of water weed free with her swimming!). You are welcome to use the dock and chairs we keep there for breezy evenings or to take a dip to cool off. We are only 2i-sh miles from town with gas, food, ice cream, coffee shop, resaturants, small town shopping and a donut shop. There is a paved rail trail just down our street that runs both directions for many miles. Bikes are welcome! (please leave ATVs at home).

The cabin features neutral colors, pine ceilings, minimal décor, excellent use of space, and abundant windows, so you can enjoy plenty of natural light and views of the surrounding woods. The great room includes comfortable leather furniture, a dining table, a 75-inch Smart TV with a PS4, and a cozy wood stove. The thoughtfully designed galley kitchen has all the essentials and a large pantry. There's also a breakfast nook and work area with an additional dining table and chairs. The main-level bedroom has a queen bed and plenty of closet space. The loft features two queen beds and one single bed. The bathroom includes a shower and a heater/exhaust fan. A washer and dryer are also provided. Other things to note: The lakeshore is beautiful, but it requires a short walk along the gravel road followed by a short hike down to the water, where you'll find metal chairs and a dock. The dock is very basic but functional, and a boat can be tied to it. Aquatic plants become more abundant in the water later in the summer. The dock is available from Memorial Day through Labor Day. We are continuing to improve the lakeshore by finishing steps down the slope and hope to add a longer dock in the future. Please reach out with any questions.

West and Middle Crooked Lakes are part of the famous Mantrap chain of lakes – the very heart of Northern Minnesota’s finest fishing country. Fish to catch in West Crooked Lake include Northern, Walleye, Bass and Panfish. You can fish right off the dock at the resort or venture out to the many inlets on this quiet lake. Mike and Loellen discovered Ruttger’s Camping Resort in the winter of 2005 while driving around the area and scanning websites for trailers. We bought a trailer on a seasonal site and have thoroughly enjoyed our summers here ever since! Had a wonderful weekend at Harvest Loon Camp. All of the amenities far exceeded expectations! The beds were comfortable, the cabin was air conditioned and the bathroom was newly renovated. Bonus points for being dog friendly! Robert was very responsive to questions throughout our trip. Highly recommend staying here - one of the best Hipcamp experiences we've had!

Our stay at Paul's Lakeside Cottage exceeded every expectation! Paul is an incredible host and made us feel right at home. One of the highlights was a sunset cruise on the lake that we'll never forget. The cottage was the perfect home base for exploring Itasca State Park and Bemidji, while still offering a peaceful place to relax. We saw so much wildlife—including a bear sitting on the beaver dam across the lake! Our dog, Piper, absolutely loved her stay and had so much fun playing with Paul's sweet dog, Piper. She definitely wasn't ready to leave! If you're looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway with an amazing host, this is it. We couldn't have asked for a better experience and can't wait to come back!

This is a great site to tent camp. The view is beautiful! The river was fun to explore. I would recommend bringing water shoes if you plan to venture in. The place could benefit from a little TLC. The gazebo is about to fall down and should be removed. We just stayed clear of it. Great place to play yard games. There's also a wooden table with a bench and chairs next to the old cabin. As well as a glass table you can put your camp chairs around to have lunch or play card games. It is our favorite hipcamp spot so far. Our second favorite is nearby and hosted by the same owner. We plan to book both spots next summer. The host is great and gives great directions and info before you arrive. Would highly recommend this spot and well as its host.

Thank goodness we had good company. The weather was to cold to get in the lake but the guys enjoyed fishing from the kyacks. The fire pit saved the days for us girls. Next time we will go later in the year to enjoy all that this property has to offer. Beautiful and Peaceful. The swans and the beavers were fun to watch. The loons were truly amazing to listen to. It was just so cold. Mother nature decided that. I can only imagine how much more it has to offer on warm sunny days. Next time we WILL go later in the year. We still had an amazing time with the best of friends. Just down the road, Pickle Loon saloon was a great place to dine on all you can eat fish Mondays. And FYI, the beds are full size (3) and a trundle. Bathroom was spacious with an amazing shower. We never saw another person the whole time we were there. Not even on the lake. Its just a beautiful piece of land and property. And ohhhh..I saw the biggest doe that I have ever laid eyes on. Nature at its finest. Thank you Bob for allowing us this opportunity. ❤️

This camp site is truly a hidden gem. It's super private, and we had the campsite all to ourselves. I want to start by saying the view is amazing, and the nature is outstanding. The amount of animals and variety of bugs was incredible. But I will be honest, the ticks and horsefly's were the only nuisance of the trip. They are pretty bad in the mornings, but otherwise tolerable during the rest of the day. The pond is beautiful, and has a family of beavers living on it. We got to hear them working during the night, it was super cool. The location is only 20 mins from Park Rapids, so if you need supplies or want to check out the town, it's not too far away. The site Does Not have water or electricity, and the bathrooms are a bit far from the camp site. I Wouldn't recommend walking to them in the middle of the night. Maybe bring a bucket. There is also a storm shelter if needed. They also provide wood, which you can pick up at the entrance of the site. They were actually kind enough to bring us wood all the way from the entrance to our campsite Twice! We were so grateful. The host's are amazingly nice people, and we had great communication with them! My number one favorite thing about the entire trip/site, was the star gazing! I've never seen so many stars in my entire life! It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. You can literally see every star in the sky from this location! 🤩

Weekend Trip to Harvest Loon Camp

This was the perfect quiet getaway cabin for our family. Nice and secluded cabin with access to the water! Fantastic cozy backyard area with firepit. The cabin itself worked great for us; open concept allowed for more family interaction, and then also able to shut the door and allow the early risers to make coffee and take showers while the teenagers get to sleep in a bit and not be disturbed. The cabin was a great blend of authentic rustic “cabin feel” along with some luxuries (A/C if needed, nice new addition with nice shower, laundry, etc…). Take the time to try the spring water down the road! The loons provided great company. Our golden retriever enjoyed the layout as well. It worked real well for having a dog. Great rental!

Trust us, with over 300 miles of shoreline to explore, this place will make you want to ask for a few more days off. Settle in among the birch and pine trees that line this reservoir and breathe in the beauty of 126,000 acres of cool, clear water. A crackling campfire at the lake’s well-maintained campground is perfect for a quick dry-off after exploring the marshlands or crouching by the shore to catch a glimpse of a local heron or loon.
