Campfire Tale: The Legend of John Tornow "The Wildman of the Wynooche." More than a century ago, the forests around Travers Mountain were home to one of Washington’s most mysterious figures — John Tornow, the Wildman of the Wynooche. Born in 1880, Tornow grew up as a gifted woodsman and hunter. He was known for his uncanny ability to move silently through the timber, living off the land with the skill of someone more animal than man. But his story turned dark after the tragic deaths of his nephews, the Bauer twins, whose family homestead you can still see from our property. Accused of their killings, Tornow fled deep into the wilderness. For nearly two years, he evaded every search party and posse that hunted him. Locals whispered that he was impossible to track — some even swore he could vanish into the trees like a ghost. He became both feared and respected, remembered as part outlaw, part legend. The tale ends in 1913, when a massive manhunt cornered Tornow in the woods. Even then, he fought fiercely, leaving his mark on Grays Harbor history forever. So when you camp here whether its under the trees-at Tornow’s Timberline, perched high at Outlaw’s Overlook, or gathered by the fire at Wildman’s Saloon Stop — listen closely to the night sounds. Imagine the friendliness of staying at a distant cousin's organic farm, with the facilities of a top-notch campsite. Only regret was that we were crashing there quickly, and weren't able to stay longer and relax on-site. I have stayed at this HipCamp in the past and liked it so much I decided to come back. The sites themselves offer the basics: table, chairs, fire pit, tent spot. But the best parts of this campground are the outdoor kitchens, outdoor game area, and all of the wooden gnomes to find. I would come back here for another stay!

A pretty campsite in a great location. All utilities worked as expected; electrical, sewer, water. Quiet and private enough for us. (For reference that means we did not use our shades on our extensive trailer windows nor was sound ever an issue.) Particulary when compared to a standard campground or even worse, a standard RV park. We would love to return.

Really cool space. I stayed in camp 0. While folks with mobility issues may struggle a bit with being up hill, I didn't find it to be an issue at all and the cheaper price meant I could stay longer. That being said, all the sites looked great. The kitchen was so nice for breakfast and to cook up the mushrooms I foraged nearby. Eventually the shower curtain will need to be changed but that hot shower in a cold night was amazing. Super close to so many things. I'll definitely be coming back.

Loved the private tv campsites. Very tucked in the woods. Free shower was lovely! Hot hot water and clean. Didn’t get a chance to meet the hosts but everyone else said how nice they were. Only a few miles to 3 beautiful world famous beaches. Close enough to Forks to get groceries and do laundry. Thanks Dale!

Just a sweet little clearing in the woods with the camping essentials: pretty views of trees and a short walk to a nearby river, fresh water, an electrical hook-up, a clean portable toilet, and peace and quiet. It is close to the Olympic Discovery Trail, Rialto Beach, Forks, and other places for daytime activities. We had a very nice stay. Blake was helpful and answered our questions promptly.

Our site was secluded and the whole property is very cool. Its proximity to the Olympic discovery trail is also a bonus. I would note that the drive into the site was easy for us in a rav4, but could be challenging with anything bigger than that. Sites are small but manageable!
