I have been coming here a couple times a year for three years now. Every time is a great experience. I can’t say enough about the beach, the new play ground, the friendly owners. While I still go to other places, I will make sure we still have this on our list a couple times a year. Oh, and the address is now in Waze as the name of the campsite.

Great little spot for an overnight stop on the way to a wedding. We were visited by a group of calves in the morning which was really neat. Thanks for the wonderful spot!

2 nights at Kohler Farms-A Shire Horse...

I don't want to be cheesy, but my experience here was truly magical. Just tucked away enough to feel secluded but close enough to the hosts' house and civilization to feel safe. You're just across a small creek from the horse pastures. The horses were incredibly friendly with both me and my dog (who kept a curious but respectful distance.) The site itself was well prepped for guests and would be great for large groups but also felt perfectly private and peaceful for a single camper. Couldn't recommend enough!! Will be back!

Part of the wooded acreage is set aside as a wildlife preserve. Our mission is to be good stewards of the environment for the benefit of nature, our farm animals, our family, and YOU! In keeping with that goal, we do not treat our pastures with any pesticides, herbicides, or manufactured fertilizers. Whether you prefer car camping or want to leave your wheels behind, we have the perfect place for you to unwind and kindle your sense of wonder at the marvels of nature. We have great spots for individual campers, all the way up to groups of 25. Fresh well water is available by the farm house, and you're only 25 minutes from town for supplies. We do keep a few provisions on hand, such as camper-friendly foods, hygiene needs, batteries, flashlights etc. Depending on availability we might have farm fresh eggs from our own chickens. And by prior arrangement we may be able to provide home-cooked meals. Covered fire pits can be used when conditions allow. Firewood should be gathered from the property or purchased at the farmhouse. No outside wood is permitted due to the potential spread of invasive species. You may also contract for porta potty services for larger groups. The area has much to offer: the Appalachian Trail crosses nearby, the New River is 30 minutes away, you can be in Blacksburg or Mountain Lake in 40 minutes, and summer blueberry picking is just the next valley over. Hike to beautiful waterfalls, Fenwick Mines, or Dragon's Tooth, all within 35 minutes. Mountain bike on unpaved forest roads...the 15-mile Tub Run Road starts right below the farm! You'll have 47 acres of mature woods, with rolling meadow, some hills, fresh springs, and a wide creek in beautiful Grayson Co, VA. Best of all, you will have lots of privacy and a spectacular star-filled sky on clear nights. Even though the property is located less than ten miles from the nearest town, here there is peace and quiet. Feel free to explore the entire property and enjoy the freedom to pitch your camp at the location that suits you! Perhaps you like the sound of a babbling creek and will want to set up camp at the flat along the creek; or perhaps you want to see the amazing view from the very top of the hill and camp there...or nestle your site in the beautiful meadow in between. The choice is yours. Expect to hike into forest and through tall grasses; there's even a bit of rock you can climb if you wish. Overall elevation change from the bottom lands to the very top of the hill is about +210 feet. Plenty of flatter land in-between. If exploring 47 acres isn't enough to keep you busy, it's a ten minute drive to the New River access where you can canoe, kayak, fish or swim. Or head into town and pick up a book at the local book shop. Access to the property will require a 4WD vehicle, or you may simply park by the entrance at the road and just hike it in. There are no amenities here, and the property often has vegetation (taller grasses) which you might want to cut to make your own site, which is allowed. Photos show what others have done in previous seasons to clear a space for camping. Campsites are generally not cleared of grass as shown. Hipcampers beware, this is rough, back-to-nature, old school style camping. There's often plenty of wildlife to see and hear although hunting, trapping, etc. is prohibited to Hipcampers. Learn more about this land: Fall asleep to hooting owls and the gentle ripple of the river and creek that flank your campsite. Wake up with a dip in the river or a morning hike in the woods. Feel the hug of the mountains throughout your stay, while also having access to Blacksburg nearby should you need it. DIRECTIONS: Upon entry the gravel road is shared with my neighbor and it is about 1.5 miles from the entry gate to the site. You'll enter thru a gate (it may be closed, if closed please close behind you as my neighbor sometimes has cows). Go approx 1 mile the road will split...go up the hill on the right. Continue past the Hay barn another half mile. Park on the left side of the gravel road along the tree line. Another 50ft you'll see a wood foot bridge across the creek. The sites are ahead, PawPaw is first, then Bloodroot Base Camp (bell tent), and lastly Cohosh Cove is the most private. Each site has a sign as well When driving, please be respectful of the right of way. Drive slowly and respect the farm equipment. Also please do not venture onto the neighbor’s property other than entry and exit. About the property 20 minutes from Blacksburg and 35 minutes from Roanoke, our campground gives you great access to the “Triple Crown” of the Appalachian trail, consisting of McAfee Knob, Tinker Cliffs, and Dragon’s Tooth. Conquer these iconic peaks of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains for spectacular views of the surrounding wilderness. Additionally, explore Falls Ridge Nature preserve, Cascades waterfall, and Carvin’s Cove for hiking, kayaking and mountain biking. Or just stay on the campground and enjoy the hiking and swimming we offer here. Nearby in Blacksburg take advantage of the local breweries or Virginia Tech football home games. You can also find Christmas tree cutting in Floyd county, 45mins away. This property deserves to be shared with others. It is peaceful and beautiful. As your Host, I am passionate about conservation and also teaching people about the medicinal uses of our local herbs. I can lead medicinal herb walks upon request for $25 a person. I typically try to meet the campers if I can upon arrival, I am available for questions and can be hands on or off as the needs of campers suggest. I have had campers ask if I wanted to share a beverage and sit around the fire and have done so. I want to make your experience as enjoyable as possible. I love the peacefulness the property offers, and that you’re in the middle of the wilderness but also have quick access to things in town. The river campsites are my favorite part of the property. At the main cabin I have goats and chickens which hipcampers are more than welcome to greet.
