About the property
Located on a 66-acre plot just five miles from the Shenandoah River, our property offers amazing access to hiking and the outdoors while also keeping civilization within striking distance. Bear Chase Brewery is just a half mile walk across the street, and we are 15 miles from Purcellville.
The land and lodge used to be the summer home of a trained opera singer, whose singing could be heard throughout the mountain.
Your Host lives onsite in the stone house that also acts as a hostel for hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Built in the 1930's all from locally sourced hand-hammered stone, the house is open every night from 5pm - 9pm.
Note that we offer several campsites relatively close to each other, so you should expect to see and hear other campers on the property during your stay.
About the listing
Pitch your tent in a forested area just a short walk up from where you’ll park your car. Enjoy unbeatable proximity to hiking and panoramic views while still having basic amenities that ensure a comfortable stay.
You’ll have access to a composting pit toilet, and can access potable water from the tap in the lodge. That’s also where you can access hot showers. As noted above, we host Appalachian Trail thru hikers on the property, so you may see them hanging around or sleeping in the bunkhouse near the shared facilities. so please be respectful of hours when you come in for a shower.

For meals, we have picnic tables, and you are encouraged to cook over the fire pits that accompany each site. Please practice Leave No Trace practices during your stay, as the property has raccoons and other critters who will be drawn to any food scraps that are left behind.
Pets are allowed! Please keep them on leash during your stay.

Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space.
Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life.
All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.
We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. We also don't offer longterm rentals as we focus on short term camping.

If a "back to nature" primitive camping experience is what you seek, this is the best place to do it! You'll have 47 acres of mature woods, with rolling meadow, some hills, fresh springs, and a wide creek in beautiful Grayson Co, VA. Best of all, you will have lots of privacy and a spectacular star-filled sky on clear nights.
Even though the property is located less than ten miles from the nearest town, here there is peace and quiet. Feel free to explore the entire property and enjoy the freedom to pitch your camp at the location that suits you! Perhaps you like the sound of a babbling creek and will want to set up camp at the flat along the creek; or perhaps you want to see the amazing view from the very top of the hill and camp there...or nestle your site in the beautiful meadow in between. The choice is yours.
Expect to hike into forest and through tall grasses; there's even a bit of rock you can climb if you wish. Overall elevation change from the bottom lands to the very top of the hill is about +210 feet. Plenty of flatter land in-between.
If exploring 47 acres isn't enough to keep you busy, it's a ten minute drive to the New River access where you can canoe, kayak, fish or swim. Or head into town and pick up a book at the local book shop.
Access to the property will require a 4WD vehicle, or you may simply park by the entrance at the road and just hike it in. There are no amenities here, and the property often has vegetation (taller grasses) which you might want to cut to make your own site, which is allowed. Photos show what others have done in previous seasons to clear a space for camping. Campsites are generally not cleared of grass as shown. Hipcampers beware, this is rough, back-to-nature, old school style camping.
There's often plenty of wildlife to see and hear although hunting, trapping, etc. is prohibited to Hipcampers. Fishing wild trout from the creek is allowed!

This is an active 55-acre horse farm. About 2/3rds of the property is developed with barns and fenced pastures and the other third is largely undeveloped areas with a loop driveway where most of the camp sites are located. There is a large white house at the far end of the property. The restroom for campers to use is located there. To one side of the driveway, on the way to the house there is a beautiful large swimming pond, complete with beach and gazebo.
The property is unique in that you can hardly see another house from anywhere on the property and yet we are only 2 miles from Barracks Rd. Shopping Center, and 4 miles from the University of Virginia.

Come take a load off at this forested Richmond retreat overlooking Reedy Creek. Set up a tent, car camp, or bring your small trailer to one of two sites on a unique property backed up to 20+ acres of woods. Imagine a hidden gem where you can relax to the sounds of rushing water and chirping birds, but can walk or bike to coffee shops, breweries, restaurants, parks or the river. If you are coming into Richmond for a Brown's Island event we are a five minute Uber to an access point using the Potterfield walking bridge (it's a beautiful walk across the James River to the island).
Each campsite includes 3 level spots to pitch tents (see dimensions below), and a connected space to park one car, van or small trailer. The large parking space can be used as a fourth tent footprint if needed. There are additional parking spaces. Each site has a fire pit (with firewood on site), a grate to grill over the fire, a picnic table, and a hammock. There is a shared outbuilding with a composting toilet, hand washing sink, outdoor shower (solar warmed), and space to change privately.

**Pricing is based on groups of up to four adults or two adults with children.
For groups of five to seven adults there is an additional charge of $10 person per day.
For groups of eight or more we suggest you reserve both sites and have the entire camp to yourselves.
Campsites W and E are about 80' apart. Both are around 100' to the creek. The spots can accommodate a total length (towing vehicle plus trailer) of up to 35 ft.
There is an outdoor spigot with potable water and hoses for clean up. The woodlands and creek adjacent to the campsites have trails that are accessible to the public. You and your furry friends are welcome to use these paths, but know that others may be using them too.
Richmond has so much to offer and we are just a hop, skip, and a jump to many wonderful attractions - kayak or sunbathe on the James River, walk or bike on trails around the city, rock climb, dine, imbibe.
PLEASE NOTE* These sites are on a private property with a house that is visible to campers, but we give our guests complete privacy and don't plan to interact unless you need something from us. While you are on a 2 acre property backed up to a 20 acre wooded area, we are still in the middle of the city and you will hear city sounds.

Each site has full hook ups. No tents are allowed due to lack of toilet facilities.

The recreational draw to this area is hard to beat in VA, and this property has it all for an amazing outdoor weekend! The ranch comprises 40 acres of lowland acreage designated for the camp, including a 5-acre lake.
The Cedar Grove sites 1, 2, and 3 are along the banks of Passage Creek located within a sparse, groomed Cedar grove. They are all a short walk (or drive) to the lake and beach amenities. Each site has varying access to the creek, so check out the site details. These sites are extra large and can accommodate multiple family groups, as well as, travel trailers of all sizes up to off-road motorcoaches in site 1. There are no hookups, so just boondocking. Pack it in, Pack it out. Generators are allowed but please be aware of the other sites and direct the noise away.
The Lakeside Mountain Stream site is very secluded, nestled between the mountains and the lake. It overlooks our 5-acre lake with mountain views in the background. It's on the opposite side of the lake from the Cedar Sites. This site has its own dock and is just a short walk down a mowed trail to a beautiful section of Passage Creek. An additional seasonal mountain stream can cascade behind the site and run under it to feed the lake when the conditions are right. It's a delicate site, so the accommodations and group size is strictly limited.

Really fun place for my first hip camp! I stayed with my 5 year old for four nights.
The creek that runs through the property is a good way to cool off on a summer day. And the rowboats to take out on the lake are nice as well. The property itself is very quiet and rural.
There's lots of stuff to do in the surrounding area. The Fireball Arcade in Front Royal was a hit with my kid, and I loved the Virginia Beer Museum next door. And of course you can't skip Shenandoah Valley National Park and Skyline Drive.
Overall a nice alternative to campgrounds where you're packed right next to someone else. Strongly recommend if you're looking to camp in the area.

Absolutely loved our stay here. The property was beautiful, the amenities were amazing, and the road noise was nonexistent. The porta potty’s were a little buggy as one might expect, but nothing you can’t handle. We camped from our car so bugs didn’t bother us too much at night. The picnic tables scattered around the property were really nice, and we barely saw other campers so privacy was an added bonus. We ended our evening swimming in the stream across the street, and woke up the next morning to swim again! Our favorite part had to be the stocked trout stream, the fishing and swimming was to die for, and the blue crystal clear water made for some unbelievable pictures. This property has so much more to offer, from horseback riding, to trails, to golf cart and atv rentals, the pool, family restaurant, on site laundry and dump station, the deli/bait shop, and all sorts of free animal activities. I would absolutely recommend this to anybody looking for a gorgeous stay right near Shenandoah National Park, for an unbeatable price!

Enjoyed our stay. We were looking for somewhere close to Natural Bridge and Devils Marble Yard. Can’t really beat the exact middle. Facilities were clean as expected. Cabin was as described. Recommended to our friends already.

We loved staying at Cedar Grove 2! There was plenty of space to spread out and enjoy camping for our 3-night stay. Firewood was available to purchase when we ran out, which was a nice convenience. The bathroom was close by and had fresh water for washing up, and the lake was beautiful—both to be on and to walk alongside. Can’t wait for our next visit; we’re already planning to bring more friends along.

The stream next to the campsite was awesome! Isabella had set out cooking things for the fire pit ( couldn’t use because of rain 😞). The bathroom with the compost toilet was large enough to change it and there were other campsite things ( hammock, towels and a long handled popcorn popper!). I did not hear much city noise- did hear trains a couple times. There was a picnic table to sit and several nice trails! My daughter and I throughly enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful location. The horse pastures boarded the campground, some trees and shade, put toilets and some water (not sure if it’s potable). Service is minimal to none (t-moble was 0 bars) which we like. Only issue we had was the flies, campfire smoke helped a bit but they tenacious. A short drive in either direction to enter Shenandoah Park. A Walmart 30m away but they have a lovely camp store down the street and wonderful corner store up the road.

We loved camping here, John and Mary were amazing and considerate hosts and everything was set out very thoughtfully. The platform for camping was just big enough for our 4 person tent and the compost toilet was quite clean; both were far enough from their home and with plenty of privacy, no one else nearby. The firepit/picnic table was a bit in front of their home, not as isolated as the campsite itself, but wasn't an issue at all and they were very respectful of our space (and very friendly, as were their dogs). Kayaks were a huge plus as well. Outdoor shower was perfect as well. Would absolutely stay here again!

One of the most amazing views you will have at a campsite. Sites are close but still private due to the terraced landscape (sites 4-6). Very quite and peaceful, full hookups and level site. Made for a great, relaxing weekend!
