Starting December 1, or first night below freezing we will be closing down Bath House and only access will be at outhouses. Only sites near outhouses will be open and there will be no access to water. Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays.

This was a 55-acre farm, split in half to accommodate a bypass through Charlottesville, so the previous owners had to give up half the land, and actually moved the house down to the other half of the property! They had to build a land bridge to get to the new home site, so they turned the bridge into a dam and created a beautiful large swimming pond, complete with beach and gazebo. My wife Stephanie and I bought the property in early 2017 and have turned it into a private horse farm, adding pastures, a riding ring, and 6-stall barn. There are ~21 horses who live on the property. The property is unique in that you can hardly see another house from anywhere on the property and yet we are only 2 miles from Barracks Rd. Shopping Center, and 4 miles from the University of Virginia.

The large parking space can be used as a fourth tent footprint if needed. There are additional parking spaces. I purchased this property in 2013 ---my Uncle Abe Kibler and Aunt Lizzie Good Kibler owned and operated a tavern across the road for years and rented river lots to their guests---in time this 265 acre spread was sold and divided to many. I am grateful to have a little piece of the Rock Tavern History back in the family. I have so many fond memories of floating the river with my family while growing up and I love sharing this experience with others while offering families the opportunity to create lasting memories!

The campers before us did leave broken glass and plastic around our camp site, however the property was beautiful and the host was very responsive and helpful. We had a lovely relaxing stay and got to hike a part of the Appalachian trail we haven’t seen before. Would definitely revisit.

This was such an amazing spot to camp. I’m glad I chose this site because it was perfect for the fall leaves. A piece of the Appalachian trail is was than 100 yds away and everything was clean and well maintained. Wonderful stay

Actually stayed at tentsite #3.... Adam was very accommodating to my date change and even suggested the tent site for car camping. Great site and amazing to have restroom and shower so close. Good wifi signal at the rec room and even reached my site.

Thoroughly enjoyed camping at Butterfly 1. The host was flexible with parking when we explained we were there for a driving trip and might need to park 5 cars there. Cool spot with a stream running nearby, a couple nearby camp sites for a somewhat communal feeling and overall great stay. Would recommend and may stay there next year for the first leg of our next journey!

We booked this site "last minute" two days before arriving - we stayed only overnight on our way back north from TN, but want to now make another trip down specifically to spend time at this site! What an AMAZING view. The site was incredibly level and easy to set up on (even in the almost dark and in torrential rain - we arrived later than planned). Easy to back into, easy to pull back out. The gravel road was smooth and well maintained - easy to town on, even up hills. I will note that the host did not reply to any of my messages, so I was a bit nervous pulling in without any communication, but it was very self serve and we didn't need them or any additional questions answered. The site does not have an address, but a bit of poking around on hipcamp and I did find the coordinates for GPS. 100% would stay again!

The creek is so close! We heard it all night.

Overall good experience camping here. Nice views and close to Shenandoah. Other campers however were extremely loud. Riding around and blasting music until 2 am right next to our tent. We ended up moving sites after our first night and found a nice quiet spot next to the stream and could actually enjoy our peace. I feel like there should be some enforcement with people who have no respect for others.

I loved my experience here especially at the browns gap site! the whole land is on a slight grade but browns gap and others had leveled areas meant for tent placement. showers and bathrooms were very clean and had hot water. The dog Abba was awesome and loves to greet everyone. At certain points the livestock or other campers dogs can be loud but it beats camping at other crowded campgrounds. definitely reccomend especially for the price!
