Keith's family farm is gorgeous and exactly as described. He was a welcoming and pleasant host. We felt safe and comfortable at the site. Hookups were appreciated and functioning well. The heated and plumbed barn bathroom was splendid in the cold freeze of night. Their horses were majestic and a great sight to wake up to. Location was great and well described for a calm arrival. There may be farm dogs off leash roaming the site - they are kind but dominant. Best to avoid contact (with or without leash) if you have your own dog or cat. We would happily stay again.

Weekend Trip to The Byrd's Nest on the River

The property was very easy to get to via a scenic drive. The cabin was really cute inside and very clean. The site was also very nice, clean, private and quiet! Night skies were dark and the stars were bright! The property was just around the bend from a cute little village with coffees shops, shopping and a nice Farmer’s market. There is also a slow ( at least it was for our visit) clear river that the property sits on with limited access - see site notes. Kara communicated everything that we needed to know and sent us detailed directions and instructions. We really enjoyed our day and wished that we could have stayed longer!

My friends and I absolutely love everything about this site. We have had our annual Mens camping trip for the last 10 years and this campsite was by far the BEST!!! Kara is an excellent host and she has setup this site with everything you would need to have a great time. I have already reached out to Kara and let her know that we will be back for sure during the summer with all of our kiddos to take advantage of the beautiful river right next to the site. THIS IS A MUST STAY for anyone who loves camping. Thanks Kara!!!

Reserved the cabin (Crow’s nest) for a little post Thanksgiving getaway and really enjoyed it. The site was well kept and private with the main “patio” opposite the driveway. Inside the cabin was awesome and pretty comfortable even with door of us and a dog. It was chilly (there’s a small space heater that helped) but comfortable in our sleeping bags with a movie on. I think it would be great to come back in the summer and check out the river.

Weekend Trip to The Byrd's Nest on the River

This is one of the few cabins that can fit more than two people. It might feel like it's in someone's backyard, but don't worry—nobody pays attention to you. The cabin faces the woods, so it feels private, and there's plenty of firewood. It sleeps four people—two on the bed and two on the cot. The toilet is clean, and the mattress and blankets are super comfortable. **Pros:** - Clean toilet - Has a sink - Unlimited firewood - Spacious for a group - Quiet location - Nice entrance from the main road **Cons:** - The small gravel road has a lot of traffic, and some drivers slow down to look at the area. Someone mentioned it’s not very private, but sometimes you have to make trade-offs. I still recommend this place and will definitely come back.

I had the pleasure of staying at The Byrd's Nest on the River in Great Cacapon. This campground offers a fantastic primitive plus camping experience, perfectly blending comfort with nature. The site is right on the river, which provides a constant, soothing water sound throughout your stay. The thoughtful touches, like solar string lights strung through the trees, really add to the ambiance at night. There are also two low-power electrical outlets with extension cords, making it easy to charge devices or add extra lights to your setup. The fire pit at this site is excellent — large enough for a big, cozy fire, and there’s plenty of places nearby (on your way to Byrd's Nest) to purchase firewood for a very reasonable price. If you're into tent camping, you’ll appreciate the two sturdy wood platforms, perfect for setting up tents or simply hanging out with your group. There are also two picnic tables, which were great for meal prep and dining. Kara, the host, was welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. My whole group had a wonderful time during our fall camping trip. Whether you're a seasoned camper or new to the outdoor scene, The Byrd's Nest on the River is an excellent spot to enjoy nature in comfort. Highly recommend!

We loved camping at The Crow's Nest. The space is so cozy and cute and is an absolutely perfect get away in the beautiful woods of WV. It is truly a great spot to disconnect and get in some R and R and Kara is the best host!

Everything was as described in the listing. Kara was responsive and warned us about the fire ban before coming and was being understanding if we wanted to cancel due to that but we went anyways. I’d love to go back when the fire ban is lifted!

We encourage guests to bring dogs, however dogs must be kept on leads when on site or on leashes when on walks. There are no exceptions to this rule to ensure the safety of all of our guests. All sites include an allotted amount of free firewood, miles of hiking trails, and use of communal facilities including a hot shower and flush toilet. Tall Oaks Campsite: Tall Oaks Campsite is a small private site and is our only rustic style site, so no water or electricity, designed maximum 6 people with parking for 3 cars on site and space for 4 average size tents. This site has a single 8-foot picnic table, portable toilet, scenic overlook, hammock, fireplace, a bench and charcoal grill. Twisted Oak: Twisted Oak Campsite is a medium-sized luxury private site includes potable water and electricity on site, designed for maximum 8 guests with parking for 4 cars on site and has space for several tents. This site has a 10-foot picnic table, portable toilet, scenic overlook, hammock, fireplace, benches, charcoal grill, and on-site string lights. Red Maple Campsite: Red Maple Campsite is a large luxury private site that includes potable water and electricity on site, designed for a maximum 10 guests with on-site parking space that is 90ft long and 20ft wide, for an RV or 6-8 cars and overflow parking for several more cars. It is designed to be backed into with an RV and then pulled out of. This site can handle several tents and has two 6-foot picnic tables, two portable toilets, a scenic overlook, hammock, fireplace, benches, a charcoal grill, and on-site string lights. Aspen RV Campsite: Aspen RV Campsite is a medium private luxury drive through site great for RVs, rooftop tents, pop ups or camper vans. This site includes potable water and electricity on site, designed with water and electric hookups for a single camping vehicle, maximum 6 people. This site is a drive through site, so guests don’t have to back in or out. This site also has a 10-foot picnic table, portable toilet, scenic overlook, hammock, fireplace, charcoal grill, and a bench.

The campground is situated in the wooded area on the back of 27 acre horse farm which is known as "The Stables at Mezza Luna." There is Wi-Fi to all the sites. Every year in the spring there are 4-6 Thoroughbred foals born that eventually will become racehorses. They live on the farm until they are 2 years old and then they go off to begin their racing career. In the daytime, when you are not sitting around your campfire, you can walk the fence lines and visit with the Mares and Foals or just watch them frolic in the fields. Hint! "They love peppermints, carrots and apples." Who knows, you might get to meet a future Kentucky Derby winner. Nearby attractions include: BLACK HILLS REGIONAL PARK (15 minutes) for boating, hiking or biking Vineyard 61 (5 minutes) Stone Silo Brewery (5 Minutes) Leechwood Haunted Forest (5 Minutes) October weekends only There are also chickens and peacocks that are very anxious to receive your love and affection with any type of treat such as raisins. There also is a playground with swings, monkey bars, seesaw and trampoline. There is a dumpster in front of the barn for you to place your trash. Note: For the winter months we are closed, we reopen in march. The furthest we are open at any given moment is about six months. We close when hunting season comes in during the fall. Description of camp: This is not a glampsite! There are limited utilities here. No Drinking water, just water for the fire. There is a self serve firewood store, you may also forage dead wood. Here only one group may camp at a time. The campsite is a big level hilltop clearing surrounded by acres of woods. There is stone driveway that leads to the site that gets you back into the woods. The driveway is wide enough for trucks, trailers, vans, etc. Since the site is up high it gets a great breeze which helps on warm days and gets good cell service. The campsite gets great sun and has shaded areas along the sides that make for good tent pitching. We have had people set up hammocks, tents, tarps, or camp in their vehicle. We provide a privy (outhouse), an outdoor showerroom/changing room, picnic tables, and a metal fire pit with grill rack that you can put in the fire pit if you wish to cook/grill over it. The woods are hilly so biking is not recomended. On the property we have 2+ miles of hiking trails. PLEASE feel free to contact us for any questions. Also please look at our pictures for a better idea of what we offer. Nearby Activities: A short drive from here will take you to Gettysburg, York, or Hanover. Codorus park offers great hiking and is next to a lake. There are many excellent restaurants and brewpubs nearby, including the award winning Warehouse Gourmet Bistro and Brewpub. For more information read our activities section to find out what other things we provide or have nearby that you can do. Pricing: We have a weeknight discount for the site which is 29 dollars (Sunday-Thurdsay nights). Friday night and Saturday night we charge 35 dollars. Any additional guests after five we charge 9.50 dollars per person. We allow up to 10 guests total. Rules: Extinguish camp fires that are unattended and to only make them in the designated fire pit, no noise past 9 o'clock, discharging of firearms and fireworks are prohibited, do not bring firewood (to prevent invasive bug spread), keep your pets attended/on a leash, clean up after your pets, no cutting down trees

~ Voted West Virginia's No. 1 HIPCAMP, three years in a row!! ~ The Byrd's Nest is a river front, primitive campsite on the scenic Cacapon River in Great Cacapon, WV. The property is very secluded, but only 2 hrs from D. C. and Baltimore. The space can accommodate 5 tents comfortably or a few small campers (w/o hookups). Please note- I only book one group at a time. You'll have plenty of privacy! Spend your day bird watching on the river deck, put up your hammock and chill, go hiking or mountain biking at Cacapon State Park, take the kayaks out and paddle around, go fishing, or take a float trip. I can provide info on put in/take out spots depending on how long you'd like to float. I have 3 kayaks available for your use, or BYO if you'd like to venture further outside of the property lines. There is one big fire ring for cooking and/or bonfires, along with a large stationary stand up charcoal camp grill. There is also a small communal shed down at camp that contains extra camping supplies, etc.. feel free to use use and put back and or/ contribute to it! :) This spot is close by to Berkeley Springs, Paw Paw Tunnel, Cacapon State Park, and other nature preserves. More hiking, biking, restaurants, spas, antiquing- all within a beautiful 20 minute drive if you wish to venture out. There is a cabin on the property. I will more often be home than not, I will communicate with you about that around your stay. Sometimes I"ll come down to the river frontage if I drop in for a float .Also, we all get around on four wheelers and UTV's. So you will hear them from time to time. If I am home, please feel free to come up if you have any concerns/questions or to say hi! :) *Please note, you can normally get to this site without a 4 wheel drive vehicle. However, when the river is high it will sometimes flood the low water bridge where it crosses the Cacapon. If this is the case during your stay, I will provide all necessary information regarding projected river levels and directions. I will also offer a full refund if the bridge is impassable.
