If you're good with primitive camping and would like to be close to the C&O, this is the place to go! Great sized, not toi private campsites and friendly owner. Bring your rafts and bathing suits to get out on the water and a bike to ride the trail! A short drive to a couple of breweries and not too far from Harper's Ferry.

Loved the site and Greg was a great host! Getting the shade sail is a must if you don't have one of your own as there isn't much protection from the afternoon sun! The river is lovely to swim in but it's down a steep bank so bring your water shoes for that extra grip. Friendly cats on the campsite and so many fireflies :D

Had a great experience at Bear’s Den. Very spacious with lots of nature around. Easy access to hiking trails, a magnificent overlook, and conveniently located near wineries and breweries. I probably could have been more prepared in coordinating my travel, however whenever we tracked down all the amenities we had an overall phenomenal experience.

3 nights at Stoney Creek Campground

We loved camping at this site! Andrey was the perfect host, he had our requested items (tubes and firewood) waiting at the site and he popped over to introduce himself. Andrey was very knowledgeable of the river and the surrounding areas. The bathhouse was clean and well stocked; the private bathrooms was a nice touch! The picnic tables and fire ring were in great condition. I also recommend booking a tube float through Andrey which was well organized and the tube float ended at our campsite (Bridge) - you couldn’t plan it better! The camp ground also had a playground, ping pong table and nice common areas. Will def return and happy to recommend!

Such a sweet little getaway! It’s clear time and care have been put into this cabin. It feels like a little private oasis even though you’re not that far from others. The bed is nice and firm and comfy. Chris was great and made sure I knew where I was going even though I got in late. The drive in is a little bumpy so if you have a low riding car you may want to park and walk in but I drove in no problem. I definitely recommend staying here!

Taylor’s landing is a great camping destination. Beautiful views and a short walk to the river and C & O canal. Hill top two is spacious and private. It was a perfect place to camp with our horses. This spot easily accommodates a large horse trailer ( even three would fit easily ). We set up our portable corral on a grassy area that backed into the shade and trail rode each day. The canal path is shady and quiet here. We had it mostly to ourselves, aside from a few people on bicycles. The footing is mostly stone dust and flat and our unshod horses were fine. Note-the sites have no running water or electric. Generators are welcome. Water is brought in daily for horses and humans

Went tent camping in spot 11 it was nice area the river was not too far away kids enjoyed themselves very much. At night when the sky is clear you can see many stars and during the day you get to see many beautiful butterflies- 2 things I don’t get to see much in my city. In all it was a great experience we all enjoyed ourselves and will be visiting again in the future.

Weekend Trip to Beespoke Farms

Working in a high paced finance role at a manufacturing global organization, I needed a weekend reset. A quick 3.5 hr drive from just outside of NYC in NJ, this little farm filled that void perfectly! The A frames were situated on top of the hill from the main house. A twin bed in one and a double bed in the other was ideal for my family of 3. Sliding glass doors viewed out on to the field in front of the cabins and allowed to be awaken by the sunrise over the mountains. Michael and CJ were the perfect hosts. They accommodated us with a farm tour, the kids fed the animals, ate from the garden, played with Murphy (CJs dog) and cuddled the baby kittens in the barn. Michael told us about the secret swimming hole at the river and provided advice for local hikes. Checking in and out was simple and the communication was easy! Highly recommend Beespoke Farms for anyone who is looking for a natural reset!

We love this property! This is our second time staying on Ben’s land and while I am partial to the other site, this one is great as well. The sites are very well maintained and the host is great to deal with. Recommend 100% and we will be back!

Weekend Trip to Stoney Creek Campground

This was our 3rd trip here and what a fun time! Andrey checked up on us a few times and was a great host, as always! We swam, caught some smallmouth and rock bass, and had a great time! This is now a yearly tradition!

Cosey Cabin

This is a 160 square foot tiny house/cabin in a small wooded area at the rear of my 2 acre property. A separate 90 square foot bath house is also provided. Both are primitive, ie, no electric or running water. The are some solar lights and candles for nighttime. Enjoy laying in the hammocks with a nice camp fire in the evening. The house is heated with a small wood stove but there is no air conditioning. Cook either on the wood stove or over the fire outside. In the summertime it is nice and private with the surrounding vegetation Please keep in mind. This is a primitive setting in the woods. It will be hot in the summer and temperature must be maintained in the winter with the wood stove or Buddy Heater. While I do spray for bugs to the best of my ability, there is a good chance you will encounter at least a few. We are in a residential country setting, so you may experience other wildlife as well. In the summertime while the foliage is up it is quite private, although you can still hear the neighbors. In the winter you will be able to see the neighbors as the trees are bare.

The Byrd's Nest on the River

Please note- I only book one group at a time. You'll have plenty of privacy! Spend your day bird watching on the river deck, put up your hammock and chill, go hiking or mountain biking at Cacapon State Park, take the kayaks out and paddle around, go fishing, or take a float trip. I can provide info on put in/take out spots depending on how long you'd like to float. I have 3 kayaks available for your use, or BYO if you'd like to venture further outside of the property lines. There is one big fire ring for cooking and/or bonfires, along with a large stationary stand up charcoal camp grill. There is also a small communal shed down at camp that contains extra camping supplies, etc.. feel free to use use and put back and or/ contribute to it! :) This spot is close by to Berkeley Springs, Paw Paw Tunnel, Cacapon State Park, and other nature preserves. More hiking, biking, restaurants, spas, antiquing- all within a beautiful 20 minute drive if you wish to venture out. There is a cabin on the property. I will more often be home than not, I will communicate with you about that around your stay. Sometimes I"ll come down to the river frontage if I drop in for a float .Also, we all get around on four wheelers and UTV's. So you will hear them from time to time. If I am home, please feel free to come up if you have any concerns/questions or to say hi! :) *Please note, you can normally get to this site without a 4 wheel drive vehicle. However, when the river is high it will sometimes flood the low water bridge where it crosses the Cacapon. If this is the case during your stay, I will provide all necessary information regarding projected river levels and directions. I will also offer a full refund if the bridge is impassable. Peaceful camping with privacy on a 160-acre historic farm! Minutes from Harpers Ferry, Antietam Battlefield and the C&O Canal to name a few. We are within an hour of Gettysburg and within an hour and a half of DC if you're planning a day trip. We have a prime central location with close access to so many things to do. This beautiful property is nestled in a valley between Elk Ridge and South Mountain with incredible sunrises, sunsets and starlit night skies. Walk out to the fishing pond, or follow the trails around the pastures to meet the cattle grazing. We have Scottish Highlands and Black Angus grazing as well as Alpacas. We also have beautiful peacocks on the property. We are a working farm so expect to see tractors and you may even see us baling hay or tending to the cattle. You may smell some animal smells which we work at keeping to a minimum but again, we are a working farm. It’s a true farm experience. Also, please keep in mind that during warm weather you may encounter some bugs. Gnats and flies are always a possibility and of course at times they can be worse than others. That can always be a possibility when camping or being outdoors. Bring bug spray, citronella and anything else to help with insects. If you stay by the pond you may hear frogs which personally I enjoy hearing but some may not. Consider bringing a generator and run a fan if you think the sound might bother you or some way to block sounds. We enjoy talking to our guests so feel free to stop us for a chat. At the RV sites you have 30 and 50 amp power as well as water. All the water spickets are potable and drinkable.

About

Maple forests blanket the southern foothills of the Catoctin Mountains at Cunningham Falls State Park. Most day visitors make a beeline for the William Houck Area, home to the park’s namesake 78-foot waterfall. After hiking to the falls, head down to William Houck Lake to swim, rent a paddleboat, or relax on the sandy beach. Hikers can challenge themselves to some tough, mountainous trails throughout the park, or seek out a quiet spot to fish along the creeks. To the south, highlights of the Manor Area include the historic Catoctin Iron Furnace and an aviary, where you can spot hawks and bald eagles.

Notable campgrounds

Best for RVs: The main William Houck Campground has tent and trailer campsites, 33 with electric hookups, plus eight camper cabins, hot showers, and flush toilets.
Best for winter campers: The smaller Manor Area Campground has 21 basic sites and just 10 electric sites. It stays open through early December, but off-season campers have portable restrooms only–bathhouses and dump stations close in winter.

Tips for snagging a campsite

You can reserve 170 campsites and eight cabins via the Maryland Parks Reservations website.
Campsite reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance.
Campsites can book up fast, especially for peak season (June through September) and holiday weekends. Aim to book more than six months in advance for these times and even earlier for cabins and electric hookup sites.

When to go

As one of Maryland’s most popular state parks, Cunningham Falls draws huge crowds, especially over summer weekends and during its annual Maple Syrup Festival (March). Plan an early arrival if visiting at this time, especially over the Memorial Day and Fourth of July holiday weekends, when the park is likely to reach capacity and close the gates. Camping season runs from early April through the end of October—the Manor Area stays open through early December.

Know before you go

Cunningham Falls State Park is 69 miles northwest of Baltimore or about a 75-minute drive away. The main entry points are the William Houck Area, on Route 77, and the Manor Area, off Route 15. Per-vehicle fees to enter the park, as do campsite booking fees.
Picnic tables and grills are at both the Manor and William Houck areas, available on a first-come, first-served basis. A reservable picnic shelter can be found at Manor Area.
Leashed pets are permitted in the day-use areas, campgrounds, and along trails.
Cell phone service is patchy throughout the park, and many carriers do not have service in the Catoctin Mountains.
Black bears are present at Cunningham Falls State Park, so keep food and garbage secure in camping and day-use areas.
There are ADA-accessible campsites, a bathhouse, and a fishing pier at the William Houck Area.

Great camping close to DC/Bmore metro area. Kids loved the rocks to climb on & water for splashing. Don't forget to get some fresh produce or pie along Rt 15 for your weekend escape!

I didn’t camp here but at Crows Nest. It’s super sketchy but free if you’re on the road. The campsite was beautiful but there is a very strange community surrounding it.
