~ Awarded Hipcamp’s Best in State and Finalist: West Virginia, since 2019 ~ The Byrd's Nest is a river front, primitive campsite on the scenic Cacapon River in Great Cacapon, WV. The property is very secluded, but only 2 hrs from D. C. and Baltimore. The space can accommodate 5 tents comfortably or a few small campers (w/o hookups). Please note- I only book one group at a time. You'll have plenty of privacy! Spend your day bird watching on the river deck, put up your hammock and chill, go hiking or mountain biking at Cacapon State Park, take the kayaks out and paddle around, go fishing, or take a float trip. I can provide info on put in/take out spots depending on how long you'd like to float. I have 3 kayaks available for your use, or BYO if you'd like to venture further outside of the property lines. There is one big fire ring for cooking and/or bonfires, along with a large stationary stand up charcoal camp grill. There is also a small communal shed down at camp that contains extra camping supplies, etc.. feel free to use use and put back and or contribute to it! :) This spot is close by to Berkeley Springs, Paw Paw Tunnel, Cacapon State Park, and other nature preserves. More hiking, biking, restaurants, spas, antiquing- all within a beautiful 20 minute drive if you wish to venture out. There is a cabin on the property. I will more often be home than not, I will communicate with you about that around your stay. Sometimes I"ll come down to the river frontage if I drop in for a float .Also, we all get around on four wheelers and UTV's. So you will hear them from time to time. If I am home, please feel free to come up if you have any concerns/questions or to say hi! :) *Please note, you can normally get to this site without a 4 wheel drive vehicle. However, when the river is high it will sometimes flood the low water bridge where it crosses the Cacapon. If this is the case during your stay, I will provide all necessary information regarding projected river levels and directions. I will also offer a full refund if the bridge is impassable. If I do not respond soon after your inquiry, it's because I am without reception. If your inquiry expires in 24 hours, I will still get back to you! Thanks in advance for your patience.

Voted West Virginia's No. 1 HIPCAMP,  three years in a row!! The Byrd's Nest is a river front, primitive campsite on the scenic Cacapon River in Great Cacapon, WV. The property is very secluded, but only 2 hrs from D. C. and Baltimore. The space can accommodate 5 tents comfortably or a few very small campers (w/o hookups). I have 3 tubes available for your use, and 3 kayaks, or BYO if you'd like to venture further outside of the property lines. I will provide all necessary information before your stay regarding projected river levels and directions. NEW FOR 2026: river access on the property! Please read the description on the photo of the bench for detailed info:) The Crow’s Nest Glamping Cabin is on the same property as (but not adjacent to) The Byrd’s Nest river front campsite. It can be booked along with The Byrd’s Nest site for larger groups based on availability, or on its own. The space is perfect to accommodate anyone who wants to enjoy the woods but is not into primitive camping! You’ll have full access to a 10x16 glamping cabin within a wide, flat, gravel area surrounded by the woods. It’s equipped with a queen bed, a chair that folds out to a twin, and a large cot to sleep 4 people inside the cabin. The space can also accommodate 2 large or 3 medium sized tents if someone in your group wants to tent camp during your stay! (One small camper would also fit in the space as well but w/o hookups.) You will see a barn style shed in some of the site pictures, that it is a storage shed. The Crow’s Nest is situated in a way that you will have plenty of privacy. BYO sheets or sleeping bags, pack like you're camping. Kick back and relax with the DVD collection and books/games to keep you occupied on rainy days (or any day!) There’s also a strong fan to curve any heat along with two functioning windows. The double doors open into a secluded view of the woods, the fire pit area and a hammock nook with string lights nestled within the trees. Of course you can also see the movie you’re watching while sitting by the fire, the TV can swing to face out of the double doors ;) There’s a porta john, a large outdoor shower, and WiFi by the main cabin. The Crow's Nest has low voltage electric inside (for charging phones and the like) and cold running water via the laundry tub sink outside your door. There’s a regular hose as well if you need one at the hydrant pump out front. *Sink/hoses are winterized from Nov-April. Note: - The river front access on the property is not guaranteed if another group is camping at The Byrds Nest site. However, there are 3 nearby public accesses. - The low water bridge sometimes floods during rainy periods. Rare, but it happens. This was my second trip to The Byrd’s Nest. I absolutely love this spot because of the privacy, the direct access to the Cacapon, and the amenities. The fishing is also fantastic and the view is spectacular. Kara is an amazing host. She’s always quick to respond to any questions or concerns.

My husband and I really enjoyed camping at the Byrd's Nest! Unfortunately, we were only able to stay one night - wish we could have stayed longer! Host communicated wonderfully and provided instructions/directions/tips. Site worked great for our rooftop tent setup, but plenty of places to pitch a tent if you wanted to. Our dogs had a blast running around and playing in the river. We enjoyed swinging in the swings on site and relaxing. Nice decks that would be great for yoga, etc. WiFi worked great during our stay, which was nice for planning our next day. Felt very private, even though host lived nearby. Portable toilet was clean and outdoor shower was amazing (great water pressure, temperature & vibes)! Highly recommend this spot; would gladly stay again!

We loved this place so much! So peaceful and beautiful. The river was lovely for floating, and she had everything you could need in the shed. The outdoor shower was the most peaceful shower I’ve ever been in. There were magical looking lights strung up around the campsite and a perfect spot for a campfire. It was such a relaxing experience, and just what we needed. Thank you, Kara!

The campsite, views of the river and the area itself were all fantastic. The campsite has plenty of room for multiple tents if you have a large group. There’s a covered deck with lights, plenty of room to place your tent if you wish to stay elevated and out of the rain…or you can just relax in the hammock or in the swings. There’s a large campfire with plenty of rocks to sit on. There is also a well stocked shed with plenty of supplies if you forget anything. And it was also nice to have use of the kayaks so that you don’t have to haul your own. It was definitely a private area and the owner was very responsive and friendly. The only downfall, and it’s a minor one, is that bathroom facilities are up the road. But it makes sense that it has to be out of the floodplain. The site itself along the river is perfect. The water is shallow enough for kids to swim, but it also gets deeper as you go up river. We caught plenty of fish and had a wonderful time swimming. I would definitely recommend this place to anybody. And I hope to return in the future.

A lovely weekend. Lots of books for perusing, bugs weren’t too bad (w bug spray), beautiful outdoor shower, clean porta potty, a nice big outdoor utility sink for washing camping dishes was something I didn’t know how much I’d love. Will likely be back, but I think next time I’ll pick the spot closer to the river so the dog won’t be afraid of the 2 foot climb down into the water. (The two camping spots — byrd’s nest and Crow’s nest are perpendicular to the river, the Byrd’s next has much more direct access to the river.) My dog is kind of a weenie and didn’t want to do anything but a gradual walk into the river. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This place is hands down the best for big groups and camping with dogs. Everyone always has a blast hanging out in the river and the WiFi, power, shelter, on-site firewood, etc makes it a super comfy spot. 10/10 cannot recommend enough.

The Crow's Nest Glamping Cabin
It's an adorable cabin in a very peaceful setting, but not too far from Grand Cacapon or Berkeley Springs. The cabin is clean and well-appointed, although a tad tight with 3 teenagers. Do make sure to pay attention to the instructions and bring trash bags. Its a great "base camp" to go out and explore the local area.

Gorgeous views and an abundance of wildlife. Watched the deer cross the river rocks in the morning and the eagle soar over the river in hunt for dinner. River is so clear you can see the fish! Great, clean site for families or those wanting direct river access.

We loved staying here! It was so beautiful and private. We were happily surprised that there were so many boats and that the shed had extra supplies. We brought our own paddleboards as well. The river was a little fast for relaxing on the water, but we still had a great time.

Kara’s property was amazing. It had more than everything my 13 year old daughter and I needed for a relaxing weekend. The site is right on the water with various kayaks and canoes available to use. We caught tons of bluegills. The fire pit was great and very large. My daughter and I both loved the covered area and hammock. We did some hiking at the Capacon State Park (approximately 30 minutes away) and enjoyed riding bikes from the camp to the end of the public access on Rock Ford Rd. We saw some deer and a bald eagle over the river. Great trip and you can tell that Kara goes all out to ensure that everyone has a wonderful experience!

What a beautiful site right along the river! You can tell that Kara takes very good care of her campsite. The shower is luxurious and has all the amenities. The space was private and even though it rained while we were there the platform shelter was completely dry. Kara was available if we had a question and very kind. We would go there again and again.

We stayed one night with our two 12 year old girls. They loved kayaking , playing cornhole (from the shed on the property), dancing on the platform and roasting marshmallows. It was so peaceful and can’t wait to visit this site again. This has been our fave camping site yet!

I stayed here for just one night but really wish I could’ve stayed longer! The location is absolutely perfect, literally right on the water. The site is huge and could easily host a large group of friends while still feeling private and secluded. I also loved that I could bring my dog along. Despite feeling tucked away in nature, it’s only about 15 minutes from Berkeley Springs, which was super convenient. The host was very friendly and sent clear, detailed directions and instructions before my arrival. I’d love to come back when it’s a bit warmer. Overall this is definitely one of the nicest Hipcamps I’ve stayed at, especially for the location!

We loved our weekend at Kara’s land! It was well-appointed, with a ton of amenities-shower, grill, supplies in the shed, electricity, etc., but still primitive and exactly what we were hoping for. Kara’s land is so beautiful! From the trees and river, to the stunning stars and a few cameos by bald eagles and owls, we are more than happy and relaxed. We had tremendous luck fishing- a fun and constant catching of blue gill and even a few small mouth bass! There were ample tethers to attach our doggo so she never missed out on the action. A quick and lovely drive into town (20 min) to snag needed supplies and then back to remote, beautiful, secluded Byrd’s Nest for food cooked over a fire and staring at our surroundings. We will definitely be back.

Kara’s property is a lovely getaway in the woods. It has all the amenities you may need, and a little extra-like the very nice hot shower. If you are down at the campsite on the river, you have river views all the time, if you are up at the top, you can simply walk down and get a great view. Would stay again! The glamping option was very nice for when it started to pour down rain. We hung out, played games and still had a great time! Kara‘s instructions were clear and very helpful.

This was my first Hipcamp experience and I think I may be spoiled! The Byrd's Nest was perfect. Quiet and serene, the perfect place to relax. I can't wait to go back next year! The shed has everything that you could have forgotten and despite feeling like you are in the middle of nowhere, town is close enough to pick up any essentials. Kara's communication was excellent. I highly recommend her spot!

We loved Kara's site. It was absolutely beautiful with lots of space. The river was perfect and easy to access. We used the kayaks and did some swimming and fishing. Our dogs loved splashing in the water. Fabulous fire pit to enjoy the evening. Highly recommend.

The Little cabin was pretty comfortable especially given how hot it was. I wish we had realized that the wall fan had multiple speeds! :-) we were really thankful that there were no tent campers on the other sites so that we could easily access the river for fishing. The $5 bundle of firewood was an excellent deal and we enjoyed sitting around the fire pit. The town of Berkeley springs is not that far away and was a cute little place to visit with some fun shopping and a lovely little museum.

Super cute!! Watched a ton of movies. Lots of games and reading material. Electric was a huge plus. It gets super hot in there as the temp was 97degrees out. So if you have an extra fan and the electric can handle it, I would suggest if the temps are going to get up there. It did cool off at night. Bed was comfy. It’s not far from main house but still felt private. Had a wonderful time. Thanks again ;)

We rented both the riverside camping site & glamping cabin for 2 nights. Kara was great to work with & provided detailed, comprehensive information ahead of time so we felt prepared for the trip. The camp site was fantastic! We used 1 platform for a tent & the covered platform was invaluable for hiding from the rain, lounging in the hammock, & hanging out under the lights. The fire pit was ginormous & we really enjoyed the multiple tables & grills. Someone had even left a raised dog bed & dog leads! :) Fishing & swimming were a blast, although the huge, slippery rocks in the water were no joke & the current was pretty intense after a couple of stormy days. Water shoes for everyone are highly recommended. With that being said, our whole family thoroughly enjoyed the water access the whole time. One thing I wish I had realized (my own mis-reading of the map - no fault of the owner) was how separated the campsite & the glamping cabin are. The owner's "cabin" (house) is actually in between these 2 rentals. The outdoor shower (hot water & absolutely wonderful, but not 100% private as the curtains/door do not provide complete privacy) is underneath the owner's back deck. There's also a hammock under that deck, a fan & the best wifi. Our teenagers especially loved that space, but I didn't understand where it was situated. Cabin = owner's house. The glamping cabin was absolutely adorable. It'd be perfect on it's own for a couple's getaway. Great stay & would definitely recommend!
