Townsend's son, Nick, foresaw a devastating development of conventional homes that would diminish the soul of this sacred land that held so much magic. So, Nick decided to move back to the homestead to create an example of what a healthy life for the land and its inhabitants looks like. HipCamp was the first step towards sharing and opening up the land to create an Intentional lifestyle. One in which we hope to share our way of being that brings awareness to the natural world we have fallen so far from. Nick and his tribe of like minds are creating a holistic, educational, retreat, workshop, and event center where people can come to learn how to co-exist in a harmonious relationship with nature and each other. The fields have been maintained to some degree until 2019 when Lee came up with the idea of primitive camping. The land turns out to be ideal because each site makes you feel like the only campers there.

Tucked among spruce, fir, and birch on Sunshine Island in Deer Isle–Stonington, Four Acre Woods began more than 60 years ago as a small, family-run campground known as Sunshine Campground. Travelers from across the world visited this quiet island forest, drawn to its raw beauty and the peaceful energy that generations before us had loved and cared for.
The campground eventually closed in the 1990s and sat untouched for over 15 years—its trails, clearings, and old campsites slowly reclaimed by the woods. The land waited, quietly, for someone to bring it back to life.
In the years that followed, Caleb, a longtime local operator on the island, took interest in the property. Recognizing both its history and its potential to offer people a deeper experience of Deer Isle’s natural beauty, he began the process of carefully restoring and reopening the land.
Working season by season, Caleb rebuilt the sites, added new infrastructure, re-established utilities, and designed a campground that honors the land’s roots while offering a comfortable, modern, and nature-forward experience for today’s guests.
In July 2020, the property reopened under a new name: Four Acre Woods.
Today, it blends the spirit of the original Sunshine Campground with thoughtful stewardship, simple comforts, and a deep respect for the forest that surrounds it. Visitors once again gather under the birches and spruces—sharing campfires, slow mornings, quiet nights, and the timeless island calm that makes this land so special.

Come to play or come to stay! We are directly on the vast Northern New Hampshire ATV/ORV Trail System, as well as the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. We are also a lakefront property, featuring a large sandy beach right on the lake for your relaxation.
The lake offers excellent swimming, boating, and fishing. From the beach, you'll enjoy amazing views of the Presidential Range in New Hampshire's White Mountains. The state boat launch is located right next to the property as well. We can host events for up to 50 people at our pavilion or on the beach.
Our full-hookup RV sites feature 30/50-amp electric service, water, and sewer connections, along with a picnic table and fire ring at each site. Big Moose Inn Cabins & CampgroundIrving O. Hunt and his brother Lyman built some rough camps on Millinocket Lake before they became interested in the Nesowadnehunk Stream region. Whether or not their old camps were at the same site as the present camps on Millinocket Lake we do not know.The Millinocket Lake Camps, known today as Big Moose Inn, are located on a narrow spit of land separating Ambejejus Lake and Millinocket Lake. Before a dam controlled Ambajejus’ water level, it was possible to pole up the short stream from Millinocket Lake into Ambejejus.Fred Spencer build the camps, originally named Camp Eureka, in 1899 or 1900 and ran them with his brother. With the founding of Millinocket only a few years earlier and lumbering roads nearing Katahdin, the two lakes became more easily accessible. Camp Eureka was advertised as the only camp reachable by both boat (from Norcross) and road (from Millinocket). In 1905, the rate was $1.50 per day, meals included. Spencer also claimed the lakes had no flies or mosquitoes during spring and summer- a phenomenon caused by the way winds blow across the lakes, which makes it difficult for insects to gain a foothold.The camps’ name changed to Camp Spencer and later to Spencer’s Camps. Around 1929 the lease was transferred to Elmer Woodworth, who lived with his wife on a nearby island while they operated the camps. Elmer, a well-known guide, trapped over the winter, and his wife served as the camp cook. The couple soon renamed the camps Millinocket Lake Camps and Trading Post. They also maintained an outlying camp on Sandy Stream for their guests. In 1941, a major fire broke out in the area. The Woodworths saved the camps by wetting them down, but lost their island home when a stray spark jumped the cove. There is some evidence that, for a short time, a gentleman named Johnny Given either held the lease or managed the camps for the Woodworths. Except for that brief change the Woodworths operated the camps for many years until they passed the lease on to their son Ray, who ran them with his wife Muriel.In 1977, the lease was transferred to Bob and Frederica (“Teddy”) Boynton, who in 1981 sold the trading post to Erwin and Maureen Bacon. The Boyntons retained the sporting camp operation and later added a public restaurant. Teddy renamed the camps Big Moose Inn. Bob and his son Bruce made many renovations to the camps, while Teddy decorated and furnished them. The Boynton Family has remained involved in the success of the inn and restaurant. After Teddy’s death in 1991, management passed to Bruce and his sister Laurie, but Bob and other family members are still very involved.The dam separates the flowages of the two lakes. Millinocket Lake is about eight feet above its original level, and Ambajejus is now some 21 feet above its original level. Salamander Hollow is a private, evolving honeybee and human being
sanctuary on 17 acres of land abutting Massachusetts State Forest. We
currently have a one-room, wood stove warmed, cozy sleeping loft for one or two - with two benches below on either side of room - for two sleeping bags; plus, a separate 22 foot Sioux tipi with two cots. There are two chairs in the tipi, which if removed at night, make floor room for four other sleeping bags.
'Forest Bathing' for miles!
If you're a larger group booking Salamander Hollow main camp with its Sleeping Library, Tipi & Slovenian Beehive House, you might consider renting this additional Tiny Cabin want to entertain all in glamping style, utilizing its amenities; as well, providing another bathroom/shower and guest bedroom for those who prefer being indoors while in the great outdoors.
Note that Kula Bata Tiny Cabin abuts the wheelchair accessible larger bathroom/shower which is available to those at the Salamander Hollow main camp, yet you are secluded with your own private entry points and private bathroom.
A ten minute drive takes you to the parking area to hike up Tully Mountain. There is a grill, wood fired pizza oven, two fire pits and a hygienic Incinolet electric toilet on the property for night convenience, with small camp sinks for washing & teeth brushing.
Take a short hike off the property to organic Chase Hill Farm for milk, eggs, seasonal veggies, grass fed meat and other goodies. Say hello to their cows, chickens, pigs, goats, pups and kids. Nestled across the road from Salamander Hollow is Timber Haven Farm, where you can schedule your pickup of bacon and eggs, while loading up on delicious Owl Energy Bars for your adventurous excursions. For those interested in the glamping side of camping, you will enjoy a remote rustic experience with a few creature comforts to keep you well read, clean and fed. Please bring your own bedding - pillows, sleeping bags, comforter, teddy bears.There is a wall mounted blue tooth car radio/CD player in Sleeping Library, so bring your pre-digital favorites. Classical CDs to listen to. Lots of eclectic books to peruse.Walkie talkies, a set of 4, are available upon request. Chess & poker sets, too.

Bring fire-starters/newspaper for tinder. We suggest if you are staying more than a night or two in winter, you bring supplemental wood or we can direct you to a nearby stand. Next season, our own cut and split wood will be seasoned and available on site. We ask that you carry out trash and recyclables.
An established Western facing four point sacred Medicine Wheel site being established on Askari Ridge - our name for the slope starting with the two fire pits - 'Askari' being Swahili for night guard.
Here is where we envision a great touch-point area for those leading groups to be for a base-camp by day or night, where eventually a multi-use tenting platform/performance stage will be constructed for outdoor entertainment, creating an authentic 'stadium style' seating on the hill.
You will see on your way up to Salamander Hollow main clearing - the Kula Bata Tiny Kabin on the left of the dirt road- now available to rent with its small guest room for two, infrared sauna, hot shower, kitchenette, dishwasher and laundry.

6 Sites are on Sunrise Farms 75 acre Conservation land with 50 mile view for Sites 1 and 2. Very quiet area with lots of wildlife and ponds and disc golf. Very quiet with great swimming and lots of hikes right from your sites.
2 of the Brookside Sites (Wishbone Left and Right) are close by (2.7 miles) where we have another 1/2 mile of river frontage and can handle bigger groups as Conservation land on Sunrise Farm only allows 4 campers per site.
Sunrise Farm Sites 1 and 2 have oodles of space and Spectacular 50 mile views of Mount Monadnock with no house lights out there in the evening except the party string lights we provide.
Site 1 (with entrance 70 yards south of the farmhouse) is best for camping in with up to 20 foot trailers or multiple tents …on the large flat spaces in the 25 acre field to choose from.
Great Well water available near farmhouse. Biodegradable soaps Only if used in the ponds. Double Olympic sized Swim Pond we stock with Rainbow Trout to keep clear.
We have been advised Not to allow imported firewood (can import Wood Beetle dangerous for our forest).
- PLEASE use the Firewood bundle tubs we provide ($12.50) - pick up at the farmhouse or pull wood from the woods (and make it safer for use).
Beautiful and plenty of wildlife nearby... as well as Outhouses are marked on Map we provide with solar lights marking them at night. Do Not Leave food out when camping or away from site. Bears are rarely seen but it is wild country. Sites have locking garbage lids.
Unique and lovely as well as being next to trails and roads to miles of remote spots with very few if any ... people.
In Winter we request only AWD vehicles go down to this site or park up by farmhouse and hike in so you can easily get out. When wet park up by the road if you have 2 wheel drive.

Enjoy a tranquil weekend at Winimusett Farm, a 28 acre retreat on a flower farm with 4 ponds, many streams and rolling fields. Stay in an off grid cozy cabin in the woods that can accommodate 2 people. Additional tent space available. The cabin includes a queen mattress, wood stove, outdoor fire pit, deck and a private outhouse. Hike up to the cabin, it’s a 5 minute walk from where you park. We provide a gorilla cart for use in hauling your supplies up to the cabin. During dry or frozen conditions guests with four wheel drive may be permitted to drive up to park closer to the cabin.
In addition to our cozy cabin we also offer a stay in the bunk house attached to the barn. This space offers 3 rooms, a wood stove, microwave, 2 queen beds and 2 twin bed, a spacious living room and dining area. The bunk house is on the lower part of the pond, making it more accessible as parking is right at the door.
There are private camp sites for guests who prefer to pitch a tent or park their van or RV. There's a portable toilet on site seasonally for guests staying on the lower half of the farm.

Instructions were easy and clear. Cabin sites were awesome. Privacy is respect and cabin setup helps with that aspect. They had a lot of accomodations nearby. Games, comunal area , outhouses and water pump, and nice to see horses on the way in.

Gorgeous piece of property and just really nicely done. Enough touches to give it character but untouched enough to still enjoy rustic camping. Would love to come back again. The reservoir near by is great and not too far from town. It’s great they provide you with fire wood, outhouses are really well kept. I do wish they had a bit more of a rain water system available but we knew going in there no water, so no complaints. Stephanie was very friendly and lovely to meet! As dead fans this place was perfection.

Another wonderful stay! We love staying at the farm when we come up to ride at the kingdom. Only a couple of cabins and a few camping spots. We always find a swimming hole to jump into to wash off the day before we come back to camp. And the free firewood is so great.

What a great campsite! We were fortunate enough to have an incredible storm roll thru just before midnight. Being in nature in the mountains and watching the lightning dance all around was epic. Stephanie was very easy to communicate with and clear with directions etc. The cabin was perfect for the two of us.

Beautiful setting! Secluded, comfortable, and well-set up camp. Facilities were clean and excatly as-advertised. Close to amazing attractions (KT, Lake Willoughby, and more). Wish I could've stayed a week, or at least long enough to try horseback riding. Had a fantastic experience. 10/10!

5 nights at Inn On The Horse Farm
We had a wonderful time staying at Georgie’s cottage. It was quiet and had all the amenities of home. The location was perfect. We used this as a base to see Boston and Salem MA. We went Salem it took and it about 1 1/2 hrs and to get to Boston during the week about 30 min and on the weekend about an hour. The cottage was clean and there towel, shampoo, charcoal for the grill, cable TV, internet and private outdoor area. We highly recommend this little Gem. I will definitely be back.

The different sites had enough space that it didn't feel crowded, and the nearby sheep and horses were fun to watch (and I'd recommend the trail ride if you have the chance). It was also conveniently close to Lake Willoughby and the nearby hikes!

Great hosts and beautiful space. We have been before and camped and this time we stayed in a cabin. Both experiences were exceptional. The town of Wilmington is very sweet and nearby. There is a beautiful reservoir nearby! Have already recommended to friends and will be back again.

We had a truly magical time at The Magick Cabin Adventure! Nick was an amazing host and very responsive to our questions.
The view from anywhere on the site is incredible. There is something new to see in every inch of the cabin. The amount of detail and care in making the cabin is mind blowing! I cannot recommend this experience enough!

Me and my partner had an amazing time at Grateful Acres. The property is about 8 miles down a dirt road and 2 miles from somerset reservoir, which made for a very quiet and relaxing trip. I can’t wait to be back!

We took our two sons on their first camping trip here and it couldn't have been better. The property was beautiful, the view was amazing and Louella was an amazing host. We even had a show after dark with all of the fireflies out in the field.
Louelle provided us with most of the essentials and she greeted us upon our arrival. We had a fire and played outside with all of the open space. They even had trails surrounding the property so we were able to go out on a nice walk.
As a fellow Hipcamp host, this place was a 10 out of 10. We will absolutely be booking another weekend here this summer!
