Big Moose Inn Cabins & CampgroundIrving O. Hunt and his brother Lyman built some rough camps on Millinocket Lake before they became interested in the Nesowadnehunk Stream region. Whether or not their old camps were at the same site as the present camps on Millinocket Lake we do not know.The Millinocket Lake Camps, known today as Big Moose Inn, are located on a narrow spit of land separating Ambejejus Lake and Millinocket Lake. Before a dam controlled Ambajejus’ water level, it was possible to pole up the short stream from Millinocket Lake into Ambejejus.Fred Spencer build the camps, originally named Camp Eureka, in 1899 or 1900 and ran them with his brother. With the founding of Millinocket only a few years earlier and lumbering roads nearing Katahdin, the two lakes became more easily accessible. Camp Eureka was advertised as the only camp reachable by both boat (from Norcross) and road (from Millinocket). In 1905, the rate was $1.50 per day, meals included. Spencer also claimed the lakes had no flies or mosquitoes during spring and summer- a phenomenon caused by the way winds blow across the lakes, which makes it difficult for insects to gain a foothold.The camps’ name changed to Camp Spencer and later to Spencer’s Camps. Around 1929 the lease was transferred to Elmer Woodworth, who lived with his wife on a nearby island while they operated the camps. Elmer, a well-known guide, trapped over the winter, and his wife served as the camp cook. The couple soon renamed the camps Millinocket Lake Camps and Trading Post. They also maintained an outlying camp on Sandy Stream for their guests. In 1941, a major fire broke out in the area. The Woodworths saved the camps by wetting them down, but lost their island home when a stray spark jumped the cove. There is some evidence that, for a short time, a gentleman named Johnny Given either held the lease or managed the camps for the Woodworths. Except for that brief change the Woodworths operated the camps for many years until they passed the lease on to their son Ray, who ran them with his wife Muriel.In 1977, the lease was transferred to Bob and Frederica (“Teddy”) Boynton, who in 1981 sold the trading post to Erwin and Maureen Bacon. The Boyntons retained the sporting camp operation and later added a public restaurant. Teddy renamed the camps Big Moose Inn. Bob and his son Bruce made many renovations to the camps, while Teddy decorated and furnished them. The Boynton Family has remained involved in the success of the inn and restaurant. After Teddy’s death in 1991, management passed to Bruce and his sister Laurie, but Bob and other family members are still very involved.The dam separates the flowages of the two lakes. Millinocket Lake is about eight feet above its original level, and Ambajejus is now some 21 feet above its original level. The Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary was generously bequeathed to the Kennebec Land Trust in November 2016 upon owner Kendra Wakefield Shaw’s passing. Its 108-acres feature historic cabins and 4000 feet of frontage on Cobbossee Stream in West Gardiner. The property’s coniferous and deciduous woods, vernal pools, and marshlands are important habitat for many species of birds, mammals, and plants. In 2018, the Maine Cabin Masters renovated two of the stream-side cabins, which now serve as rustic getaways for Hipcampers and the like. A small dock and canoes are available for use on the wide and deep flatwater stream! *NEW 2024 - A dock has been added to cabin 2, so each cabin now has it's own private dock. Please carry-out your trash after your stay. Thank you! Due to the sensitive wildlife habitat - no dogs are allowed at either cabin. I have a two night minimum but will consider a single night reservation occasionally with a $20 additional fee. We have been hosting guests for 10 years at our eclectic, nature filled, good vibe overflowing, quirky lodging. Come and expect some interaction with host, to your comfort, and possibly bumping into another guest or two as you are mesmerized by the evening call of the hermit thrush on route to the campfire or spontaneously planned lobster/vegan/other bake in the back yard. Enjoy great conversation at the fire and burn a few marshmallows. Bend your ear for that haunting barred owl or coyote call. I support your relaxing beverage or two at the fire or around the property but this definitely not a party place. We will consider your pet with $35 fee and a conversation ahead of time. We have a jack russell and black cat so have to protect their interests and those of other pets and guests coming as well. Your pup must be on leash at all times unless/until we decide they are safe, others are comfortable and that it works for all to have them run free at times. Thanks! Lounge on stunning porch busy with wildlife, walk or bike a woodsy trail, nod out or challenge your son to a game of tetherball. Just minutes from busy Route One, this lovely island oasis is convenient to local favorites like Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Popham Beach, Reid State Park, the quaint towns of Bath and Damariscotta and all the midcoast has to offer. You can find yoga, pottery, preserves to explore and organic beer on the island as well. Loon Point Cabin and Camp Site

This cabin was built by the original owners in the 1960's as a temporary shelter. They never got around to building a more permanent dwelling and instead used it for many years as a rustic camp site. We purchased the land and the cabin 10 years ago. Rather than tear down the old cabin we began rehabbing it 2020 to enjoy ourselves and share with others. We were in the process of building a new modern camp on the property but had a major fire there in the fall of 2022 totally burning the new house and the surrounding trees. We are in the process of cleaning that up but you will se the evidence of the fire when you arrive. Fortunately it will not affect your experience at the cabin. We love this location and we think you will too. Learn more about this land: Enjoy the privacy of a rustic cabin 10 feet from the shore of Amabjejus Lake. Take in gorgeous sunsets on this west facing waterfront looking across the lake to the historic Ambajejus Boom House. Listen to loons at night and see bald eagles flying overhead during the day. The cabin is furnished with a full size bed and a toddler bed, a table and 4 chairs. A mattress pad and fitted sheet will be provided but you will need to bring your own linens or sleeping bags and pillows. There is a picnic table, fire ring and a tent site for up to a 4 person tent. There is an outhouse which you will share with the owner if present. This cabin was built in the 1960's by the original landowner to be a temporary shelter. We purchased the land 10 years ago and are in the process of building a larger camp on this 1 acre property. You will have your own private waterfront area. There is a also a small sandy beach and a swim dock that you are welcome to use but may share with owners if they are on the property. Canoes, paddles and lifejackets are available to use. The southern entrance to Baxter State Park is only 10 miles away. The owners will be sensitive to your privacy but may be working on the property nearby during your stay. Guests are limited to 4 people. We love children and have 5 of our own. If you are a couple with more than 2 children (or a single parent with more than 3) please contact us. We would love to accomodate you if possible. One final note. In November 2022 we suffered a fire to the main structure that we were building on the property. As a result campers who come in 2023 will see a foundation and evidence of burned trees around the location of the burned building. The cabin and surrounding area suffered no damage and there will be no change to the appearance and view of your stay except going to and from your vehicle. My husband and I stayed at Circle right. We went in early May just as they were opening . It was a very lovely site surrounded by large boulders and a view of the lake through the trees. The restrooms were very clean and the hot showers only cost 75 cents for a long shower . There is a great store/ restaurant adjacent to the property. There are great biking trails just up the road , a beautiful lake to paddle and Baxter State Park just 10 miles away. We would definitely go back..!

John was a gracious and communicative host. He and his family have a beautiful parcel that abutts the Andoscoggin river. Although it was rainy during our stay we enjoyed canoeing and fishing on the river, and some nature walks on their expansive property. We were fortunate enough to see a beautiful rainbow, and a bald eagle during our stay. It's also a great place for dogs to run loose. Do bring yourself some bug spray to keep the ticks at bay and remember to check your pooch for those pesky bugs!

We had a great canoe ride, rode our mountain bikes out to the pond and around the property, and our kids (3 & 4) enjoyed biking the fields and exploring. I loved camping at Lily's. Waking up to the birds and the sound of the water was wonderful. The serenity surrounding the rustic camp is perfect. It is an short walk to the camp site so bringing your gear, water and supplies was easy to do in multiple trips. Host gives you your privacy; which i feel is a bonus , but is easily attentive if one needs. I am looking forward to returning to this special place.

What a beautiful spot! We thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful views, the sunshine, and having the cabin to refuge in as we were there on a particularly windy day! The cabin was beautifully set-up as a peaceful retreat with chairs on the porch overlooking the ocean - which made a lovely sunset viewing spot. Lily made us feel super prepared with all of her instructions and was a warm & kind host. The cabin was the perfect spot for us, who usually do tent camping, but were a little nervous to do it so early in the season (April) with such unpredictable weather. We loved being able to enjoy nature, while still having the cabin-structure to relax in when it got a little too brisk/windy. We had an amazing stay and would hope to one day return!

It is built on property adjacent to our fruit farm which is slowly building up to full production with a kiwi orchard planted, ramps seeded, and a producing strawberry hoophouse for early ripening fruit. We move our horse and pony around to different fields during the warmer months, and keep pekin ducks (the white ones) (now all in retirement!). The farm is 78+ acres with logging roads and is located on a quiet road. Food markets and some good places to eat are within 6-7 miles. There is an outdoor shower, a nice outhouse, a campstove, oil lamps etc - so it's is very old fashion yet comfortable cabin stay! Bring your own towels and maybe some candles. Plenty of board games, and maps of our local hikes and places to explore. If you come in the fall you should know that the roof is insulated but the walls are not - so layer up, bring extra blankets, and hugging the woodstove might be necessary! This is a great location to explore the midcoast of Maine!

Our cabin is an off grid post and beam structure that we built 8 years ago. It's has a full kitchen, wood stove, and screened porch. There are jugs provided for doing dishes etc and a large (150 gallon) tank outside for refills. There are a generous supply of lanterns (both battery and inflatable solar) flashlights and string lights for lighting. This is a small two story timber frame cabin off grid and secluded deep in the woods. It has a separate outhouse as well as shower stall to use the solar shower bags in. The cabin has a king sized bed in the loft with a child size fold down bunk above it; there is also a pull out couch on the first floor. As well as a kitchen, screened in porch and fire pit. Linen, dishes and utensils are not included please bring all that you need. There is a propane 4 burner stove with oven and solar shower bags. Trash and campfire wood is included. The space allows for two adults and two small children, anymore than that would be very tight. The cabin is insulated so the road traffic isn’t bad but it is noticeable at certain hours when the window is open. There is a large parking area with about a 100 yard walk across a lawn and then another 100 yard walk through an uneven wooded trail to the cabin. We have two composting toilet outhouses available for guests use that we take care of on a daily basis.Inside of our large greenhouse, there is a hot water outdoor semi-private shower, only biodegradable soap that we provide can be used. There is also a kitchen and seating area in the greenhouse with a propane grill, toaster oven, microwave and electric kettle and small coffee maker/French press. The greenhouse is a communal space that our family uses as a wood shop and greenhouse space so while the kitchen and shower area are kept clean and clear for guests, the rest of the greenhouse is a working space that can be in various states depending on what projects we have going on. Dogs are allowed but they need to be leashed due to our free ranging ducks and the closeness of the road. We can occasionally provide eggs and some veggies and herbs for tea for a small fee if it’s arranged in advance.We provide a fire pit and kindling but ask that you bring your own fire wood that has been purchased in the area so as not to bring in any new pests.The parking area is large enough if you want to bring a boat or trailer.Our spot is 3 miles from downtown Freeport and is located near a commuter road so it’s easy access to many spots.Freeport is a coastal town with two state parks, lots of great diverse trails which are well maintained and lots of restaurants/breweries. We are a short drive from Portland, Brunswick and Bath which both have lots of parks and restaurants. If you would like a wheel barrow full of firewood provided there is some available on site for a small donation. • There is a hammock with a shade cover at the cabin for you to use. • There is a bug net provided in the cabin if you're in need of some extra protection indoors. • Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is a short drive with a few hiking trails. • Baxter State Park & Acadia National Park are each an hour and a half away (just in opposite directions). • A composting toilet is on site, with a scoop and bucket of sawdust to cover waste. I you need to pee, find a tree! If it's number two, use the loo! • No electricity at the cabin or on the property • No running or potable drinking water. Must bring in water. • The cabin is quite cozy for 1-2 people and/or 1-2 fur babies. The cabin itself has an 8x10’ floor plan with a full size futon. The deck gives another 3’ to enjoy your inside/outside stay. • The property DOES get full sun so be aware of finding shade throughout the day! I like to enjoy the river(s) and explore the area during the peak heat hours! • Mosquitos like to come out at dusk. Learn more about this land: You'll arrive at our barn and home, probably greeted by a variety of animals. Walking past the pond and through the field towards the tree line, you'll arrive at our tiny cabin situated on a hill with the salt marsh below. The cabin is furnished with a full sized futon, a wooden bench, beehive working woodstove, and shelving. There are candle lanterns provided, however we suggest also bringing a few flashlights. Depending on the season we have farm vegetables and eggs available, kayaks available upon request to use to explore the salt marsh and harbors right out in front of the cabin. A short drive and you can find numerous hiking areas and beaches or take the longer 1 hour and 15 min ride to Bar Harbor. The cabin is not visible to the main house, though sound may travel. You'll have a beautiful view of the water facing west for sun sets. We access the water and trails around the fields foraging for berries with our kiddos and dogs, along with rotating the grazing animals and will provide ample space to respect your privacy. A small gas grill and cooler can be provided, Cabin has no electric or running water. Water can be accessed from the main house and/or barn pumps depending on season, however will need to be brought down to cabin. Outhouse is located nearby.

Over the course of three years he built the island house by floating cedar logs across the bay, using a come-along to bring the up to the land, debarked and prepped them for building and set about constructing his off-grid, solar powered home. All without power tools. Both my Mom and Bob were ardent environmentalists and peace advocates. For 20 years they lived year-round on the island and only left when their ages made it difficult to continue cutting/splitting/moving/burning wood and just the ordeal of living so remotely.
