Tucked among spruce, fir, and birch on Sunshine Island in Deer Isle–Stonington, Four Acre Woods began more than 60 years ago as a small, family-run campground known as Sunshine Campground. Travelers from across the world visited this quiet island forest, drawn to its raw beauty and the peaceful energy that generations before us had loved and cared for.
The campground eventually closed in the 1990s and sat untouched for over 15 years—its trails, clearings, and old campsites slowly reclaimed by the woods. The land waited, quietly, for someone to bring it back to life.
In the years that followed, Caleb, a longtime local operator on the island, took interest in the property. Recognizing both its history and its potential to offer people a deeper experience of Deer Isle’s natural beauty, he began the process of carefully restoring and reopening the land.
Working season by season, Caleb rebuilt the sites, added new infrastructure, re-established utilities, and designed a campground that honors the land’s roots while offering a comfortable, modern, and nature-forward experience for today’s guests.
In July 2020, the property reopened under a new name: Four Acre Woods.
Today, it blends the spirit of the original Sunshine Campground with thoughtful stewardship, simple comforts, and a deep respect for the forest that surrounds it. Visitors once again gather under the birches and spruces—sharing campfires, slow mornings, quiet nights, and the timeless island calm that makes this land so special.

We maintain pollinator habitats, tend an fledgling orchard of heirloom-variety fruit trees, and conserve rare heritage-breed animals, including Tamworth pigs and Scottish Highland Cattle. Our shared love for Celtic folk culture has blended naturally with our love of sustainable agriculture to create Tir na nOg Farm. Today, the work of restoration continues with the help of farm partners, family, friends, WWOOFers, and other volunteers. FAQ: Our cabin is an off grid (very limited power, now way to charge or plug in AC devices) post and beam structure that we built 9 years ago. It has a full kitchen, wood stove, and screened porch. There is a large (150 gallon) tank of water for doing dishes and camp showers but we do not suggest drinking it. There is a generous supply of lanterns (both battery and inflatable solar) flashlights and string lights for lighting. We have wired lights that run off DC power when there is enough solar and we provide some battery packs for charging phones. We highly suggest bring some way to charge any of your personal electronics. There is no reliable way to do that in the cabin.
This is a small two story timber frame cabin off grid and secluded deep in the woods. It has a separate outhouse as well as shower stall to use the solar shower bags in. The cabin has a king sized bed in the loft with a child size fold down bunk above it; there is also a pull out couch on the first floor. As well as a kitchen, screened in porch and fire pit. Linen, dishes and utensils are not included please bring all that you need. There is a propane 4 burner stove with oven and solar shower bags. Trash and campfire wood is included. We are very busy with kids and work, we try our best to clean and re-supply between guests but it is not always possible, please let us know if something needs attention!

Welcome to Lulu's. Where you can get a little crazy under the moon or you can take in the peace and serenity of the stillness in the woods. Depends on what you are looking for! No neighbors to infringe on your ideal get away. The large cabin has a welcoming front porch to enjoy the amazing sunrises over Streaked Mtn. 100 acres of privacy to hike, watch wildlife and just relax. Cabin has outside facilities. Off the grid-no electric or running water. Cell service is adequate. 1 gallon of fresh well water provided for drinking and 10 gallons for washing/cooking.
Bring your own linens for a queen size bed, twin bunk beds and a full pull out couch. 2 pillows are supplied with a pillow protective cover and pillow case which are washed after each guest. Pots, pans and utensils, are onsite which are washed between campers; trash bags, compost bags, paper towels, dish soap, dish towels and a 2 burner propane stove(green canisters needed) and an older propane table top grill are provided. Camp fire grill on site if you prefer cooking over open flame. There are some battery operated light switches and solar lights in the camp and outhouse. Downtown Norway has quaint shops to browse! Norway Lake has a public beach and boat dock. Many hiking trails nearby-Noyes Mtn, Patch Mnt, Singpole and Streaked Mtn to name a few. ATV trails (also can be used for off-road biking)onsite connect with other towns for many miles and hours of riding. Plenty of lakes/rivers for kayaking. Casino, race track and breweries for night life. Oxford Hills has much to offer.

Get your "groove" on or hang loose here on a precious little island with a big bridge just off route one in the heart of Midcoast. Hundreds of guests report the perfect balance of upbeat fun and chill time and call our place and hospitality "magic", "amazing" and "holy guacamole!" It is a lovely spot just off the beaten path but close enough to access the frey. :)
I welcome my guests personally and have likely had a chat before you booked. I like to know what your hopes and priorities are around your stay before I accept so I can meet both of our needs. When you arrive, I will greet you and share a little history/tour of the place. I accept travelers between 4 and 9 pm but like all of us schedules fluctuate and we can roll some. There's a strong chance on an average Maine clear summer evening, I have the campfire going and the solar lights around the yard are charged for their evening gentle show.
All of the spaces I rent are bedrooms only. You walk a few steps/yards to my 5 bedroom home and access two showers and some kitchen use. I also have an outdoor shower and outdoor kitchen that is cute and for your use. It's fun to cook on the fire too! I prefer folks to limit cooking esp in hot weather but support healthier eating and may share some of my foraging tips. The rooms are equipped with plenty of linens and fan power. You will be cozy either way the temps go.
There is a lovely porch on the log home where you can sit and enjoy the sunset and lots of wildlife activity. The back yard has tether ball and lots of seating as well as the good sized fire pit with ghosts of hundreds of fireside chats gone by. I look forward to ours!
Next door there is a gravel road on a lightly traveled road for your walking or biking pleasure. I am happy to join you in a hilly roller coaster cycling experience and have a few bikes to offer up. I am a WWOOF host and have occasional "helpers" and you are welcome to explore my veggie and flower gardens.

Walk through the large open field, away from everything, to this storybook setting. All you can hear is the waters of the brook rushing and sounds of nature all around. Graham Lake is just a stone's throw away. Great for stargazing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming. This magical place is just beyond our farm where we you can buy fresh duck eggs daily at the house.
In the cabin, upstairs, a lofted queen bed accessed by a sturdy wooden ladder. Downstairs, a wood stove with dining area, and living space with full sized convertible bed. No electricity, no plumbing, no wifi. Good cell service. Composting toilet and water tank for use inside cabin. Gas grill and firepit with tripod grate outside for cooking options. Two large picnic tables for outdoor dining. Truly a magical place.

The Wakefield Wildlife Sanctuary was generously bequeathed to the Kennebec Land Trust in November 2016 upon owner Kendra Wakefield Shaw’s passing. Its 108-acres feature historic cabins and 4000 feet of frontage on Cobbossee Stream in West Gardiner. The property’s coniferous and deciduous woods, vernal pools, and marshlands are important habitat for many species of birds, mammals, and plants.
In 2018, the Maine Cabin Masters renovated two of the stream-side cabins, which now serve as rustic getaways for Hipcampers and the like.
A small dock and canoes are available for use on the wide and deep flatwater stream!
*NEW 2024 - A dock has been added to cabin 2, so each cabin now has it's own private dock.

Its like going back in time a hundred years but you have some cell reception, unlike our ancestors. Have made several improvements to cabin not yet reflected in guest photos. Yeti type cooler provided for refrigeration of food for longer stays. The cabin is small but can accommodate 5 easily. Queen bed with bunk beds in 1st floor bedroom, full size and twin bed in upstairs bedroom. Clean linens provided. Open kitchen and living room. Seems like most people love it. Pretty sure you will too. So much to do in the area. Be as bored or as active as you want. Welcome book with directions to local spots all very close. Waterfalls, the most beautiful lake (Onawa), swimming holes... all close by. Appalachian trail out back. Other sites close by must be driven to but close by still, away from town. You'll arrive at our barn and home, probably greeted by a variety of animals.
Walking past the house and through the field towards the tree line, you'll arrive at our tiny cabin situated on a hill with the salt marsh below.
The tiny cabin is furnished with a full sized bed, a wooden bench, beehive working woodstove, and shelving. There are candle lanterns provided, however we suggest also bringing a few flashlights.
Depending on the season we have farm vegetables and eggs available, kayaks available upon request to use to explore the salt marsh and harbors right out in front of the cabin.
A short drive and you can find numerous hiking areas and beaches or take the longer 1 hour and 15 min ride to Bar Harbor.
The cabin is not visible to the main house, though sound may travel. You'll have a beautiful view of the water facing west for sunsets. We access the water and trails around the fields foraging for berries with our kiddos and dogs, along with rotating the grazing animals though we will provide ample space to respect your privacy.
A small gas grill and cooler can be provided.
Cabin has no electric or running water. Water can be accessed from the main house and/or barn pumps depending on season, however will need to be brought down to cabin. Outhouse is located nearby.

Group trip
We had a great time. There was plenty of sleeping space for 5 adults, but the dining/living area was a little too cozy when it rained—In nice weather we enjoyed the outdoor picnic table and fire pit.
The cabin was well located as a base for hiking and kayaking—we enjoyed North Pond, (12 min walk) Wilson Falls, Lake Onawa, Borestone Mtn, etc —including using the 2 kayaks that came with the cabin. Paul was very helpful and responsive.
We were glad we brought headlamps and mouse proof food containers.

Beautiful, quiet farm with so much to see! The hobbit house was lovely and clean. The animals were fun to watch for the kids. The hosts were friendly and knowledgeable. We would love to return some day!

3 nights at The Bird's Nest-Private Tiny House
Beautiful place. We loved every second. Very clean and sooo charming. It was literally the best place. Felt very much alone and removed from everything (which was what we were going for :) ) Close to the lake, which was beautiful. We cooked on the fire, played fetch with the dog, read books and did nothing all day.

2 nights at Cabin of the Woods at Tilden Pond
This place is magical. It is rare to find a haven that is private, quiet, and simply beautiful nature. The clear lake, the beautiful trees, the view of the hills, a great fire pit and cooking/eating table, a spot for a tent or a cabin in the woods, and a wonderful responsive host who is friendly and helpful. Don’t miss out on this gem. It truly gets away from it all and back to nature. 💚

Very cool remote and private spot. Also very quiet. We enjoyed star gazing and paddle around the pond. Dan was very responsive and sent along updates in a very timely manner. We would gladly return in we are in the area.

Heavenly little nook in the woods. Private and cozy barn, plenty of amenities, excellent communication. Description very accurate. Compost toilet and cold outdoor shower. As long as you know, there are no surprises. Wonderful experience all around!

This location is simply remarkable. We got to see the Perseid meteor shower from the top of the clearing, and it could not have been more perfect. The cabin was a perfect cozy home to return to after all day and night outdoors. Everything we needed was there, from flashlights to coolers. The hummingbirds visited us every few minutes when we were outside during daylight hours too. We can’t wait to come back.

My girlfriend and I had a great stay at Midcoast’s Pond Cabin! The cabin was as described and was exactly a 1.4 mile walk from the parking lot. A wagon was helpful in transporting our stuff. The outhouse appeared to be brand new and well maintained! The pond cabin is right off the main trail so you could often hear and see people walking past but no paid us any mind. We had access to the water from our site as well as a nice outdoor fire pit area that was a little more private. The cabin windows limit the airflow into the space so we draped a bug net over the door to allow for a little more airflow which was welcomed with the warm weather. The only issue we ran into was the paddles for the paddle-boards and kayaks were locked up and the welcome center wasn’t open so we were only able to swim in the pond. Would stay here again!

3 nights at Tir na nOg Farm
A beautiful farm with beautiful people! Piglets, cows, and chickens provided the entertainment we needed. Staying in the Hobbit House is such a magical experience. A unique structure with ample room to relax and listen to nature. The loop trail in the back was a pleasant surprise, filled with ferns and hemlocks, I walked it every morning observing something new. Holly was very welcoming and provided us with excellent recommendations for local food. Great location that feels tucked away but is close to great hikes, food, and anything else you could need. There’s a very cute bakery nearby that was delicious!

We just spent three nights at Dan’s wild and beautiful camp. It’s set on a peninsula on the pond, with sweeping views of the water and the mountains beyond. We enjoyed listening to the loons, walking the moss covered paths, and kayaking. Very peaceful. Thank you Dan for sharing this special place.

The cabin was a very cozy and fun place to stay! Beautiful surroundings, clean and tidy accommodations, comfy upstairs bed, and very usable kitchen. The host was very responsive to any questions and provided a great little write up about the cabin’s history, as well as suggestions of places to visit. We fully enjoyed our stay.
