Once the site of the historic V.J. Fetzner Brewery from the late 19th Century. The land is now used as a hobby farm, honey bee sanctuary and nursery to a unique tree species normally not found in Southeastern Minnesota. Remnants of the brewery are still visible. Foundation walls outline the massive structure of the brewery. Nestled in the center of the foundation is the entrance to the sixty-seven foot deep cave that once held barrels of beer and can be accessed by canoe only. Hops have been located on the property and are believed to be ancestors of those raised to make the beer once stored in the cave. The pond that provides access to the cave was dug out in the early 1990's to create a fish out for the Spring Falls Trout Farm that used to exist across the highway. Some of the original brood stock still exist and continue to naturally stock the pond. It is not uncommon to see fish that are five to ten pounds in size. We do not allow fishing from our pond. The residents house is built to scale to the original brew master's house. While the house is only twenty-four years old it looks as though you have taken a step back in time. The name Shady Rest was given to the house by the Brew Master's wife. We thought it was appropriate to keep the name alive. Shady Rest Acres is comprised of twenty-three acres of beautiful woodlands and pasture that are protected forever in the Minnesota Land Trust. The pasture is home to Scottish Highlander cows, two miniature donkeys, five sheep, four goats, honey bees and a flock of chickens. Scottish Highlanders were selected for both their grazing and browsing abilities. They are very docile and make excellent pasture mates to the smaller species sharing the pasture. The cows are excellent forest managers. They clear out invasive species such as Honey Suckle, Buckthorn, and Barberry which can often be difficult to manage. A guided tour with the host can be taken to meet the pasture animals. The forest is comprised of many tree species. Some are unique in that they normally do not grow in this region of Minnesota. The yellow birch is a species normally found in Northern Minnesota. It's bark is golden in color and glistens when the sun hits it just right. We have a cluster of several yellow birch including one that is so big that the bark no longer looks golden but instead is grey and very rough. Years ago the largest of these trees made excellent wood for turning bowls. Blue Beech (musclewood) can also be found on the property. As the name indicates the bark is shaped like muscles. Songbirds and some other species will use different parts of the tree as a food source. Towering white pines also speckle the landscape. Mother pine requires at least two humans arm lengths to encircle the whole tree. She is a favorite resting spot for the barred owl. There is oak, elm, maple, ceders, poplars and numerous other species. Honey bees are an integral part of the landscape. We partnered with a friend and started raising honey bees two years ago in order to do our part to keep pollinators thriving. Their hives are located in the pasture where it has the perfect amount of early morning sun to get them moving and afternoon shade to balance out the summer heat. It is not uncommon to see them pollinating garden plants, trees and wild flowers around the property. One of their favorite feeding spots is the acre and a half prairie which offers a range of plants including big blue stem, wild indigo and baby blue stem, to name a few. Not only are honey bees essential to the food chain but they also provide a very enriching experience when they are observed moving about their hives. There is nothing more relaxing and fascinating than watching these amazing creatures.

Nestled in between two valleys with 3,500 feet of stream front property on the West Fork of the Kickapoo, we truly have one of the most unique campgrounds you'll ever visit. Our entire stretch of stream is fully improved and excellent to fish. We have a healthy native brown trout population. We work with a local school science program to raise and stock brook trout every year. We have resident Sandhill Cranes, Bald Eagles, Oriels, Willow Fly Catchers, Hummingbirds and many other avian species. Nestled between two valleys, we frequently have stunning sunsets. We are far enough way from light pollution to easily see the Milky Way Galaxy on a clear night. The star gazing is amazing and if you keep your eyes up at night, you're pretty much guaranteed to see a shooting star, if not multiple. The West Fork Sport Club is truly a special campground. We're a short 15 minute drive from Viroqua which has a lot of great local shops, the Driftless Café (Owned and operated by Wisconsin Foodie host Luke Zahm) and a fantastic farmer's market. We're 25 minutes from Wild Cat Mountain which has extensive hiking trails. There are also two great vineyards within 15 minutes. We have a lovely piece of property to come enjoy a getaway at. We enjoy all of the peace and quiet around here. The night sky is unbeatable in my eyes. We have a small hobby farm with lots of very tame animals. We have 42 acres to roams with lots of trails within the woods that are filled with aged oak trees and many young maple trees. Our property is filled with lots of wild flowers and wildlife. We are locate 3 miles from the root river if you enjoy fishing or going for a float down the river. There are two caves in our area that are a must see while you are visiting. I you like to hike there is a state park 14 minutes from us that have many miles of hiking trails and horse trails. If you are more the small town strolling type of person we have lots of small towns around us that are filled with shops and lots of great food! There is a large system of bike trails in our area that make a very fun way to check out some of the small towns. If you have a family with kids we have a lot of fun activities you can do with your kids, like spending time with the goats, chickens and ducks, playing on our playground, or taking a nice walk through the woods looking for fossils!

Weekend Trip to Echo Valley Farm

We had a great time in the Straw Clay Cabin! It was clean, cozy and comfortable. We really enjoyed this unique cabin, including the woodland animals that are built in to the walls, and also having some information available in the cabin about how it was constructed. We also enjoyed hiking around property and seeing the chickens and sheep wandering around! Overall a great stay, we'd be happy to come back.

Echo Valley Farm is absolutely beautiful, and Maggie's Cabin was just right for what we were looking for! Dena was wonderful - kind and helpful and willing to accommodate a scheduling mistake on my part. The cabin itself was cozy and warm, and the farm was beautiful - rolling hills, grazing sheep, and forests in the distance. Echo Valley Farm is just right for a trip to get away from the demands of daily life and slow down a bit!

Most luxurious hike-in site I’ve stayed at for sure! I stayed at Celtis on top of the bluff at the very end. Was happy I did because in late fall, there didn’t look to be much privacy at the other sites. Celtis was awesome and the bed was super comfortable too. The structure with the screen and tarps worked great for letting in some airflow if unzipped or none if zipped up. A table with 4 chairs, firepit, and the perfectly-spaced trees for a hammock made this site really great. Be prepared for a very steep (but short) hike up. Bathrooms with toilets, running water, and showers at the bottom near the cabins were a nice touch too.

Creekside Sounds campsite was a perfect retreat for us! The campsite was tidy and located right next to the creek, but also surrounded by a large open grass field. The space felt secluded while also not feeling any sort of confinement. Plenty of area for our dog to play and explore without bothering any one... or cows! Jolene was a great host and provided us with everything we needed to have a wonderful time on the farm! Although it was tucked off the main road and back in its own little area, it was not as far from town or other amenities as it typically would be for that type of seclusion. Would highly recommend Jolene and her campsites to anyone.... we even hope to return!

I would definitely recommend Gossman Goat Farm! It has beautiful views and it was fun to see the goats and chickens. The directions were clear and the sites are clean and well organized. Cathy was very helpful and friendly and her boys ran and gathered eggs.. A great family run business, and the handmade soap was a wonderful souvenir!:)

We loved camping in Erica’s quarry! The views were beautiful and there was a state park 10 minutes away for even more beautiful views of the Mississippi River. Even with a couple other groups on the property, it was quiet and secluded in our little corner. The end of the drive was marked with a camping symbol and the instructions provided were clear. Would absolutely come back.

Beautiful, secluded campsite with a babbling brook running through!! The region is gorgeous in the fall. The outhouse was clean and well kept. Tai + Stella’s visitor guide and map were very informative and easy to follow. Logan brought us firewood and allowed us to enjoy the area in peace. Highly recommend if you’re looking for an escape out in nature.

Big Trout Creek site did not disappoint! We had everything needed for a perfect stay and buying firewood right there was very convenient. Jolene checked in with us a couple times which was nice as well. Our pup wasn't sure about the cows the first day but by the end of our stay made peace with them!

Mike and Joan thought of everything. It was a perfect short stay for us. We appreciated the kindness shown to us and the ride to and from the site. We had our own little spot in nature with everything we needed. Campfires were so easy with the setup provided. Loved the presence of drinking water and wash up water. The compost toilet bathroom was clean and perfect. I’d come back in a heartbeat. Remember to bring warm sleeping bags or blankets if you are headed there in the fall!

The land, cabin, Cathy and family and of course the goats were all amazing. My kids had the best time! Everything was as described and perfect. The cabin worked great for 5 of us and the cabin amenities like games, hammock and fire pit were perfect.
