We really enjoyed our stay — the campsite was peaceful and right by the water with everything we needed (kayaks/canoe/boat available). The host was very caring, friendly, and welcoming, even giving us fresh farm eggs, which was such a nice touch. The spot felt private and relaxing. The amenities are excellent: power at all sites, warm showers, flushing toilets, and well-maintained grounds.
Unfortunately, we had to cut our trip short because of the high winds, but we’d love to come back when the weather is calmer!

The property was lovely and the owner's are so friendly and make you feel right at home. Loved all of the animals, especially their beautiful dog, Millie. The solar shower was a treat and there were so many decorations and gardens to see. We left with eggs, veggies and great memories. I would highly recommend and hope to return myself one day!

We easily located Brian's spot and enjoyed exploring the cute town of Luverne as well as Beaver Creek (The Cidery!) as well as Sioux Falls.
For larger rigs I would recommend spots 1 or 2. We ended up in spot 4 and we fit in it just fine, but we're not the best at backing up and it took us several tries due to the angle. (That's on us, not Brian!)

A Little Slice of Heaven – Peaceful Lakefront Camping with an Amazing Host
This place went above and beyond my expectations! I stayed for 2 nights and had an unforgettable experience. Jim is by far one of the most gracious, friendly, and welcoming hosts I’ve ever met. From the moment I arrived, he greeted me, showed me around, and made sure I had everything I needed. He even brought firewood right to my site and surprised me with a dozen fresh farm eggs—talk about hospitality!
His land is a true hidden gem. The quiet lake is perfect for paddling or fishing, with a trolling motor boat, canoe, and kayaks available for guests. My campsite had electric hookups, a firepit, patio table with chairs, plus a mini fridge—a thoughtful touch that made camping feel effortless. There’s also access to a shower, flushing toilet, and outdoor bathroom, so comfort is never sacrificed.
I loved that my two dogs could run around freely and enjoy the space—it was as much their vacation as mine! Nights were the highlight: no city light pollution, just millions of stars sparkling in the sky. Absolutely breathtaking.
This place is serene, clean, and peaceful, with everything you need for a relaxing escape. I’ll definitely be back. Huge thanks to Jim for sharing his beautiful property and making my trip so memorable. This one’s a 5⭐️+ stay all the way!

Highly recommend! Such a great little spot. We stayed at Site 4, which was spacious and set a bit farther from the others—perfect for us with two dogs and a toddler. The site came with a fire pit, table, chairs, and even a hammock. We loved the lake view and really appreciated the access to kayaks, a canoe, and a boat with a trolling motor. You can hear some traffic but that's to be expected due to it's location but it didn’t take away from how enjoyable the stay was. We didn’t get to use everything this place offers, but that just means we’ll be back again. The host was very friendly and welcoming, showed us where everything was, and made sure we were comfortable settling in. We came in from Sioux Falls, and it was absolutely worth the drive and the money.

Overview
About
The towering 100-foot Sioux quartzite cliffs that preside over Blue Mounds State Park might be more pink than blue, but whatever the hue, they provide a dramatic backdrop for hikers. Fifteen miles of hiking trails lead the way to cliff-top viewpoints where you watch wild bison grazing on the prairies or gaze out over fields of wildflowers, and the rocky landscapes also harbor some challenging mountain biking and rock-climbing trails. When it’s time to set up camp, choose from drive-in or cart-in sites at Blue Mounds Campground, some with electric hookups, or snag one of the two seasonal tipis.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- You can reserve one of the park’s 87 campsites (40 with electric hookups) or tipis in advance via the Minnesota State Parks website.
- Campsite reservations open 120 days in advance, and same-day bookings are possible.
- Campsites, and especially tipis, book up as fast for summer and holiday weekends. Book your spot at least three months in advance to avoid disappointment.
When to go
Whether hiking and biking through summer, or snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter, Blue Mounds welcomes adventurers through all four seasons. Come in spring to spot bison calves or in late summer to admire the prairie wildflowers at their most colorful. High season runs from April through the end of October, and some campsites and amenities may be unavailable through the low season.
Know before you go
- Blue Mounds State Park is located 65 miles southwest of Marshall or about a 1-hour 10-minute drive. The park entrance is on County Road 20, about a mile from Minnesota Highway 75.
- Vehicle permits are required for all Minnesota state parks, in addition to camping reservation fees. Permits can be purchased in advance via the Minnesota State Parks website.
- Facilities at Blue Mounds State Park include a Park Office with a gift shop (firewood and ice also available in season), restrooms (flush toilets only in season), a picnic area with a playground, and a sanitary dump station. There’s wifi available at the campground in season.
- Prickly pear cactus blooms in June and July, so make sure to stick to the trails.
- Pets are welcome at the park but must be kept on a six-foot leash.
- There are accessible campsites, restrooms, trails, and picnic areas at Blue Mounds State Park.

Beautiful area, spacious sites. Clean facilities. Very friendly hosts. Definitely a place to come back to. Buffalo didn't let us see them, even tho we hiked in 3 miles

Some of the cart in sites are AMAZING and very secluded with rock formations . The trails are beautiful with many blooming flowers and prickly pear cactus plants . This would be a great place to try out that new rock climbing gear .
