As the Scenic Passenger Train is heard in the distance you'll look up towards Mount Blanca and imagine your next adventure living among the wildflowers of this High Desert Mountain Hipcamp. After recovering from a wildfire, the ancient sage brushes that had previously made the land harsh and unwelcoming are nearly gone, replaced with an abundance of grasses and wildflowers if blessed with rains. Open Land as far as you can go to the East you'll follow the Coyote canyon to high mountain lookouts. There are old logging maintenance roads you could take advantage of, so Hike, Bike or Motor around the local area. Fort Garland and Blanca have a community center (pool), septic dump and water fill and can provide groceries. The Great Sand dunes are about 45 minutes away. The Sand Dunes swimming pool, fed by a very hot artisan well is about an hour away. Mountain Home Lake is also within 1/2 an hour or so for fishing/water sports with a nice boat ramp. Escape from light pollution like never before, a clear night sky will make the whole trip worthwhile! Lots of wild life and you will most likely see some deer, hear the coyotes, and count the different colors of the humming birds. You can book a train ride out of Alamosa, and visit the local historic towns. The views will make it hard to leave the campsite, but there are tons of experiences and things to do in the area so make sure to do some research before you arrive. The weather and wind can be unpredictable in the mountains, so be prepared. There are two entrances onto the property, one at the bottom and one at the top. You can avoid some wind by camping near Lewis-Smith Rd at the lowest part of the land. Also, the site can accommodate large trailers/RV's but just make sure to plan your entrance/exit carefully and don't go to far down the hills. Just choose a wise spot to park if in a big rig. There are some small tires around that you can use to sit on or if you dig a hole that you fill in before leaving you can make a temporary toilet. Make sure to haul out all your trash and leave the site cleaner than it was when you arrived and respect the land. If you do come across a mess from the previous camper and clean it up, just let us know and we will give you a refund for the night. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Set up camp and enjoy sweeping views of Mount Blanca and the surrounding Sangre De Cristo mountain range. This 15 acre camp is situated just off highway 160 for easy access, approximately 25 minutes from The Great Sand Dunes National park and Zapata Falls. Mono Loco Flats is an excellent home base for exploring the San Luis Valley. Sangre de Cristo Creek is a short hike or drive to the south. Fort Garland is a 10-minute drive.
All three sites provide 360 panoramic views with epic sunrise and sunset views of Mount Blanca. Wild horses and prong horned antelope may wander the Mesa as you enjoy your camp. The natural beauty of these three campsites is worth protecting so please if you pack it in, pack it out. This is a dry camp with no toilet or garbage facilities. Please treat this land with respect so that future campers may enjoy the land free of rubbish. All three campsites are accessible with any type of vehicle, and the long driveway and turnaround can accommodate any trailer or RV up to 20'. Crestone is also known for its 30 diverse spiritual centers, incredible star gazing as a official dark sky community, alien sightings, and it's beautiful and unique housing community that focuses on building with reclaimed and natural building methods. Our home, like many of the homes here, is creatively made from recycled materials, using two train cars for the body of the house. The property also hosts a 1200 square foot Dojo, built by the previous owner, a Qi Gong master lineage carrier. We are completely off grid, using solar power, wood heat and some propane when needed. We aren't on sewer or septic, so this is an opportunity for the understanding of composting toilet and humanure systems.

If you are traveling with horses we have several corrals for you to rest your horses as well as a RV power hook up. Sorry no waste dump.
We have a water spigot with cold delicious water and an outlet to charge your phones.

Very nice and quiet. The noise from the creek was soothing. Plenty of room for our 3 dogs. The town of Cuchara is great the people nice. Dog bar and grill is great some of the best pizza. The trails in the area are amazing

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sweetwater River Ranch and highly recommend it! From fishing to cookouts, every moment was a delight, and we were thrilled to meet the warm and welcoming staff and guests. The ambiance is both inviting and relaxing, making it an ideal spot for outdoor activities. One standout feature was the excellent Wi-Fi, which worked flawlessly even without cellular service in the area. This combination of great amenities and a charming atmosphere made our experience unforgettable. We would definitely return for another visit!

We actually ended up on site River 1, because it was available. and fit our needs better. Beautiful scenery with view of the river and mountains. River 1 was spacious compared to the other sites. Check in was easy, and the hosts were friendly and accommodating!

Loved camping at Stephanie's spot! Very beautiful, spacious and clean. The river running along the land was our favorite spot for coffee and rest. Amazing 360° views! Bring your hummingbird feeders, there are lots waiting for a drink!

Very quiet, peaceful location with full hook-ups! Hosts are very responsive and helpful. I would add that spot 1 faces this one (spot 2) and they share the central area, but it currently holds an unoccupied camper trailer so there were no others at the camp site when we were there.
Across the highway from Lathrop State Park, the oldest state park in CO!

We stayed at Corral #1. It is beautiful and right by the Arkansas River. We would sit and watch wildlife activity on the river. The managers were available and helpful (we purchased ice from the camp store). It was nice to have flushing toilets and showers available. The road is right behind the camp and you can hear the traffic (but at night we played white noise and it did a good job blocking it out). We enjoyed our stay!

My dog & I very much enjoyed the peaceful seclusion and excellent hospitality provided by Mary Anne & Alex.
Their property is exactly the kind of remote tranquility I seek in backcountry drycamping settings (they have shorepower available, but I didn't need it during the 5 days)
Mary Anne's homemade muffins were an unexpected treat!
I would just recommend that campers be aware that rain can make for slickly surfaced unpaved, but graded roads.
The terrain is only slightly sloped, without rutting ...so high clearance isnt needed: Nonetheless, I lost traction, was sliding a bit until locking hubs & using 4WD.
A great secluded refuge overseen by very nice hosts. Two thumbs up!
