Sweetwater River Resort is located right on the Arkansas River, 30 minutes from Canyon City and 30 minutes from Salida where Hwy 50 follows the river through Bighorn Canyon. Skiers, we are only 40 miles from Monarch Ski Resort Sweetwater is the perfect getaway for anglers, hikers, rafters or nature-lovers. You’ll find uncrowded sites to unwind on our private 1/2 mile stretch of the Arkansas. At night you’ll find the clearest skies around, perfect for stargazing. Experience a range of accommodations at Sweetwater River Resort, from budget-friendly cabins to glamping tents to old-timey cabins and RV sites. For larger groups, we offer a spacious house overlooking the Arkansas River, all just a short distance from the river itself. Sweetwater is a short drive from 45 miles of 4x4 and ATV trails at Texas Creek, the Arkansas Headwaters Hiking Area, Vallie Bridge, Loma Linda, Lone Pine, Hayden Creek, Royal Gorge and Rainbow Trail near Westcliffe. Group Tent sits as close to the Arkansas River as you can get without falling in with plenty of room in the shade to stretch out and enjoy the view. Room for 3-4 big tents, canopies and hammocks. We also allow teardrop trailers, rooftop campers and vans (no hookups, though). Perfect for fishing and/or relaxing.

For 2025 we eliminated 2 tent sites - from 8 to 6 - to give campers more space. The Individual sites are located across the river, accessible by suspension bridge so there is a little work up front hauling your gear across the river but we do have a hand cart to help. If you're not up for the short hike over the river, the Corral Sites might be what you're looking for. Every site has a fire ring, picnic table and sits right on the bank of the Arkansas River. You won't be assigned a specific site - you're guaranteed a site, but not a specific one. One tent per site.

New for 2025, Mule Deer Group Site accommodates Sprinter vans and rooftop campers. Or, just park and pitch a tent. Mule Deer is one of the biggest and most private spots in the park with tons of pine and spruce canopy for shade. There's a rock outcrop that forms a shallow cave only feet from the river - a great place to sit and take in some world-class sunsets or stargazing. For the hikers or stroll-enjoyers, there's a trail that starts next to the site that goes to the end of the property (roughly a quarter-mile, maybe a little more).

If you were any closer to the water you'd be in it. The Pioneer Cabins 2 is a private rustic cabin with a deck, right next to the river with electricity and running water. Both Pioneer Cabins are 100 year old cabins from an old summer camp near Westcliffe. This cabin sleeps 4 with two queen beds, sink/cold running water, heater, mini-refrigerator and microwave. Toilets and Showers are located in the Bathhouse next to the office. Has an outside charcoal grill, campfire ring and picnic table.

Pioneer 1 is a nice and shady and secluded cabin with a canopy of cedars and natural rock formations that lead down to a perfect spot to sit in a camp chair and dangle your feet in the Arkansas River or catch some trout. It's a rustic cabin - about a hundred years old - with 2 queen beds, electricity, sink/cold running water, mini fridge and microwave and elect. heater for cooler evenings. We have public restrooms and showers just a short walk to the office. Also has a grill, fire ring and picnic table.

Perfect Couples Getaway

Pioneer Cabin #2

This cabin is so tucked away and private feeling despite being near other sites! We stayed for two nights in pioneer #2 after tent camping at the mule deer group site for the week and it was great! The cabin is rustic but has many amenities that made the stay feel simple and easy (mini fridge, fan, heater, coffee maker, microwave, sink, linens/pillows for the beds, chairs, outlets/lights) and outside there is a stone fire pit ring, charcoal grill, trash bin, and picnic table. We had no issues with critters during our stay but could tell there were maybe mice that live there too so make sure to seal your food at night! The public bathrooms are easy walking distance from the cabin as well! Would definitely return to stay here again!

We camped at the mule deer group site in a tent with two people and a dog for 5 nights and have nothing but great things to say about our experience! There are neighboring car camper sites but it still felt so private with tons of space to ourselves! Mark and Neal (the owners) were so kind and accommodating and made us feel very welcome and safe! The site has so much space, enough that we had room to even build out a little outdoor shower since there was a hose to use right at the site (surprise to us) and even electric for recharging our jackery)! There is a stone fire ring, picnic table, and flat gravel pad to pitch a tent or back in a camper vehicle, then the land slopes downward a ways towards the river (which you cannot get into for swimming or bathing but you can fish from the shore easily)! The stars and moon were spectacular at night and we had no problems with critters at camp whatsoever so leave your bear box at home! Bathrooms are nothing crazy fancy but there are multiple stalls and showers (with hot water) in both the men’s and women’s bathrooms (that are locked with a key pad for authorized campers)! The site is right off highway 50 which is convenient, but that obviously means there is street noise (but nothing that ruined our trip given you mainly are hearing crickets and a running river the remainder of the time at this site)! We would definitely camp here again given is close proximity to Cañon City, Salida/Poncha Springs, Buena Vista, and so much more!

This river site is hard to beat. While the campground itself is old and small, it’s very quaint. The rusted charcoal grills could be pitched and the small cracked picnic tables need to be replaced but nothing can compare to the giant cottonwoods hanging over the sites. And did I mention the gorgeous river? Plus you have to chat with the host, Neil. He’s a treat.

First let me say the views are very nice. Love staying by water. That is where it ends. Started when we first got there the front door and inner walk area covered in nat and nat webs. The sites are tight and not maintained. There was so much dog poop on the ground I thought there were geese in the area but no people do not pick up after their pets. The entire campsite was falling apart. Every picnic table, deck by the river and wooded bridge going over water.. everything needed attention. We did not use the restrooms there so couldn't tell you about those. The noise from the road was loud. Thats on us. We knew it was close to the road. If you don't like road noise this is not the place for you. The host was nice. The area could be a great spot.. Just needs a lot of TLC at this point. Lots of families with kids with anything that floats having a great time.

We had an amazing stay at this cozy riverside cabin! The views are incredible, and it's a great spot to relax, unwind, and enjoy nature. A couple of tips for future guests: if you're visiting when temperatures are above 90°F, be prepared for the cabin to get pretty warm. There is a fan, but bringing an additional fan will make a big difference. Since you're right on the river, bug spray and some fly tape are also good things to pack. Those minor things didn't take away from our experience. We'd happily stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet, scenic getaway.

Based on the photos in the listing, I didn’t expect a 2 line highway to be within 50-75 feet of the site. This made it difficult than normal for my toddler to sleep that night and we ended up finding a different campground. The site itself was nice, the turf and picnic table were very nice as well as the sun shade. The other complaint I had is we never met, saw or communicated with a camp host or attendant of any kind. We made sure to arrive before the late check-in time, and only found a map with instructions on how to get to our site. I called the office number several times and no one ever called me back or came to verify we were in the correct spot.

I stayed solo in Pioneer Cabin #2 for seven nights. Basic amenities for a reasonable price. Pleasantly more private than I expected (busier over weekend). This cabin has fantastic proximity to the river. The river structure should have made for great riffle fly fishing, but I think my expertise fell short. It would get really hot late afternoons—a large directional wall mounted fan helped a lot in the evening as cabin temperature cooled. Beautiful views. Nice rocker for comfortable sitting.

From fishing to cookouts, every moment was a delight, and we were thrilled to meet the warm and welcoming staff and guests. The ambiance is both inviting and relaxing, making it an ideal spot for outdoor activities. One standout feature was the excellent Wi-Fi, which worked flawlessly even without cellular service in the area.
