Welcome to Camp Wilder! We are an off-the-beaten-path camp offering peace and solitude.
The cabin is very special to my family and me. It was passed down as a mining claim from my grandmother who founded it in the '60s. The vision for the land was simply perfect.
A small 10 x 10 cabin with the whole mountain to explore and whoever they wished to bring with them.
The town of Nederland is 10 minutes down the road where you can fish at Baker Reservoir. Lots of fun little stores in town to keep the family busy.
Wildlife is everywhere up by the cabin/campsite, always remember don't leave food lying around with lots of great things to look for around the magical town of Nederland.
The cabin sleeps up to 8 with the futon downstairs being very comfortable and 3" foam upstairs in the loft for more sleeping area. Bring your sleeping bags to stay cozy at night. There are lanterns inside to light up your night with a wood stove to keep you warm at night. The ground around it is sloped so you may have a hard time setting up any tents around the cabin.
The grocery store is in Nederland where you can buy food, Coleman green propane bottles, gallon jugs of water and wood. There is a 3 burner Coleman, stove to cook on with limited pots & pans as well as silverware.
Road disclaimer, the road to the cabin is one lane dirt road. The drive up to the cabin is pretty good but the turn onto the single dirt road to the cabin has a slight dip, if you have a low-clearance car it may bottom out when you are turning so be careful.
No Trailers. They will not be able to turn around once there.
Recommend vehicles with AWD. Go 3.4 miles up Caribou road. Turn right @ yellow stakes go .4 miles. Park on the left. Hike down to the cabin between yellow stakes.
We are @ 10,000 feet and it is a slight hike to the cabin. Go 3.4 miles up Caribou road. Turn right @ yellow stakes go .4 miles
When leaving please make sure both door locks are locked, put the key in the lock box and mix the code for the next camper.

We have a BRAND NEW barrel sauna, hot tub, grills, seasonal pool (Memorial Day to Labor Day), meeting space, outdoor beer garden, bathrooms and showers for campers and a wonderful trail to Betasso Preserve right from your campsite. Tin Can Camp is located within 200 acres of Colorado State Trust Land at roughly 8,000 feet above sea level. The landscape is arid high desert with scattered groves of piñon and juniper trees. The camp serves as a convenient home base for launching adventures across the San Luis Valley to various local Hot Springs, archeological sites, and other small town local attractions. For the more adventurous guests, there is recreation right from Tin Can Camp with The Valleys largest trail system and climbing area less than a mile away and access to the vast expanse of the Rio Grande National Forest.
The cabins are "micro homes" outfitted with modern conveniences. Each cabin has solar power, a propane heater, a compact kitchen with a sink, water jugs, and pump, two full size loft beds, a small table with chairs, and a covered porch. Guests should know there is no water available on the property. You will need to bring water for all your needs. This includes cooking, washing, drinking, and for putting out fires. Guest should plan 2 gallons of water per person per day. A public well/pumphouse is at the intersection of County Road 38A and Road 40G (37.836363, -106.271551)
Tin Can Camp is adjacent to the future Sangre de Cristo Dark Sky Reserve, and the property has spectacular views of the Milky Way Galaxy. Each cabin has a fire ring for guests to relax and enjoy the dark nighttime sky. Wood collecting on the property is not permitted, so guests must bring their own firewood.
As mentioned, the property is located at the entrance to Penitente Canyon. Penitente Canyon is a Nationally-renowned climbing destination with more than 400 climbing routes. Penitente Canyon also has 30+ miles of non-motorized trails for mountain biking, hiking, and equestrian activities and guest have direct trail access from camp!
Guests can ride mountain bikes directly from the property. There are numerous recreation, sightseeing, historical and cultural, and agricultural tourism opportunities in the nearby Rio Grande National Forest, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area.
Gas, ice, water, and some groceries can be found nearby at the La Garita Trading Post, which has operated since 1913. The La Garita Trading Post is in a historic log cabin and serves the best local-beef burgers in the San Luis Valley.

Had a great experience here. Stayed at glamping site C and brought my dog. The hill/climb to this site was definitely more strenuous than others but it was worth it for a bit more privacy. Tim has put a lot of thought and detail into developing the sites. The glamping site really did have everything needed; heater inside the tent, campfire, camping stove, cookware, dishes, cutlery, water, camping chairs, lanterns, etc. Each site also has a bear box so you don’t have to worry about taking food to your car at night. The 13’ tent was big enough that my dog’s kennel fit inside and it still felt like there was plenty of room. The port-o-let is about 300’ down the hill from this and was clean.
Tim was very helpful and accommodating. We had some issues with the heater in the tent (temps were 35F overnight) but Tim concerned himself with ensuring we had solutions and warmth during our stay.
I recommend and would stay here again.

I stayed here for 2 nights with my partner and it was so lovely. Every bit of space in these little cabins is very thoughtfully used, and having access to a sink and kitchen with running water is really convenient. The outhouse was the cleanest outhouse I've ever been in, and the little paths to them is very considerate. These little cabins stay quite warm, considering it's a little late in the year I was shocked at how warm we were. It was easy to find, and the little footpath right to Penitente Canyon was so nice. You really can't beat it for the price, location and amenities!

It was a pleasant cabin.
It was missing 2 lite bulbs in the ceiling lamp & the space heater was antiquated.
I would suggest a cabin number to be more visable at nite as I couldn't see it on the post.
The bath house was nice & clean & hot h20.
The coffee was bit strong & it was available in the AM.
I would stay there again.. & it was very quiet.

We had a great time during our stay! Friendly host and beautiful scenery. The accommodation was perfect for our group of 4 - close to Gold Hill Inn, so perfect place to come back to after a fun show.
