Weekend Trip to Camp Kan-Ne-Ga (Ute for "home")

We had an amazing weekend camping at Will’s property. The site was completely secluded, which made it feel like our own private getaway. Our dog Miles loved having the freedom to roam and explore the land — it was perfect. As a cool bonus, Will’s son Jake came by the first night and cooked dinner for us as part of testing out ideas for his future catering business. The food was seriously phenomenal and made the night even better. Overall, the property was incredible, and they were amazing hosts — the whole family is just very warm and loving. Definitely would recommend it to a friend.

Glamping tent was clean and set up with everything we needed. Close to some great hiking at Saint Isabel national forecast and to Salida.

3 nights at Sweetwater River Resort

Pioneer Canin 1 was perfect for what we needed. A great view of the river from the front porch and easy access to a semi private swimming hole. The cabin was clean and cozy, just a little warm in the afternoon, but with windows open and the fan on, we napped perfectly. It was closer to the highway than I expected, but the sound of the river largely masked the sound of the highway. I’d stay here again in a heartbeat. The staff was friendly and helpful.

The cabin was clean.. No air conditioner, but there's 2 fans to cool off the room and if ya close with curtains when the sun is beating down, and open them up at night, it gets very cool. Short walk to the shower and toilets. Rolling stream right out the front door. Free wi-fi They taught us how to Fly Fish, which was so fun, since we had been wanting to learn forever. In the mountains, WiFi can be sporatice, be prepared. The showers have Hot water!

1 night at Frenchman's Creek Ranch

Stayed in one of the canvas tents here and had a lovely time. Pretty quiet and the bathhouse was clean and showers were a great touch. The night sky was beautiful and got a nice glimpse of the Milky Way. Be sure to take the walk down the train trestle!

1 night at Starlite Vintage Resort

We just got back from an incredible stay at Starlite Vintage RV Resort, and let me tell you—it was everything we didn’t know we needed. From the quick, hassle-free check-in to the spotless grounds, everything was on point. We stayed in the Betty Boop RV and it was adorable. Vintage charm with modern comfort—clean, cozy, and full of character. It felt like stepping into a romantic time capsule (but thankfully with hot water and a comfy bed). Perfect for a couples’ getaway with just the right amount of quirk. The heated pool was an awesome surprise—great for a relaxing dip after a day of adventuring and soaking in those ridiculously stunning views. Seriously, everywhere you look is postcard-worthy. The bathhouse and shared bathrooms? Spotless. Like, “do they have a secret cleaning fairy?” level spotless. While it was a romantic weekend for us, we couldn’t help but notice how family-friendly the whole place was too—play areas, pool fun, and wide open space. We’ll definitely be back and could see bringing the whole crew next time (but also… might just escape for another couple’s weekend again first ). Highly recommend if you’re looking for something fun, unique, and full of good vibes. Retro magic in the mountains!

What a beautiful property that is impeccably maintained by Belinda and Todd. I loved staying in the Aspen Grove; it was so peaceful. The sites were set up with everything we needed, including chairs, gas fire with propane provided, lamps in the tent, etc, etc. The shower was also really nice; not usually something you expect when camping. Belinda and Todd were great and very helpful. Our kids really enjoyed interacting with the animals on the farm, too (with permission). Thank you!

Weekend Trip to Riverside Vintage Campers

We had a great stay and would definitely recommend! Lovely location that felt more nestled in nature but easy drive to Gunnison. The camper setup was cute and nice enough for the price, the outhouse was clean and they provided all the essentials. Bring bug spray as it’s right on a river so the mosquitos did get pretty intense in the evening.

We had a great time on Will’s beautiful property! He was very accommodating and genuinely happy to host us on his land and ensure we had everything we needed to have fun! This place is very well thought out and we didn’t need to bring much - all the joys of camping without the work! The property is just as pictured- loved all the amenities and “camping” with a mattress is a must for us now! Our kids and dogs loved roaming the property, collecting wood, star gazing, s’mores making, roasting dinner over the open fire, hammock time and playing bags. Eleven Mile Canyon and fossil hunting at the quarry was a great days adventure. Fun for everyone 😃 thanks so much for hosting us and hope we can come visit again soon!

I loved the location. Beautiful view of the water steps away. Very private. The bed was comfortable with linens provided. If you’re visiting in the summer months I would highly recommend bringing an extra fan or 2. Check in was seamless. The views are amazing. Great location for your 4 legged pup. Coffee post, mini fridge and microwave were a great plus. I would also bring mosquito spray and bug zapper. I only had to use mine the last day. You are able to see the rafters from the front porch. Great place to unwind and peaceful.

Quaking Aspens Campsite- For Kids!

Located on 3 acres of land, this private campsite features a large 16x20 canvas walled tent with a covered deck. There is a large wood stove inside to keep you warm all night long during all four seasons. The tent can easily accommodate up to 8 people. There is 1 twin over full bunk bed, 1 full size bed, and 1 futon. There is one more additional mattress and bed-frame under the bunk bed for additional sleeping (some minor furniture rearranging is required to make space for the additional bed). PLEASE NOTE: The reservation is for the provided canvas tent only. If you want to pitch additional tents, we do allow that for an added cost of $25 per tent per night. Please contact host prior to booking to make sure your arrangement will work. We do not allow extra tents on the property without prior permission and paid fees. In the woods right by the tent you’ll find a private playground complete with: swings and slide, trampoline, spinning rope tunnels, ninja course, climbing dome and a zip-line. In the winter there’s a great area for sledding.  We provide everything you need for the camping experience. There is a a set of dishes for 10, silverware, all cooking utensils, cast iron pots and pans, a coffee percolator, trash bags, dish soap, outdoor kitchen prep area, large 3 burner camp stove, propane, (5) camp chairs, bear box, warm down comforters, lanterns / solar lights, board games for both kids & adults.  The only thing you should plan to bring is your own firewood, water, sleeping bag or sheets, your pillow and food! Penitente Canyon Tin Can Camp

Nestled in the heart of the San Luis Valley at the entrance to Penitente Canyon and Special Recreation Management Area and 50 minutes to Great Sand Dunes National Park, San Luis Valley Great Outdoors welcomes all guests to come and enjoy their cabins at Tin Can Camp. Tin Can Camp is located within 200 acres of Colorado State Trust Land at roughly 8,000 feet above sea level. The landscape is arid high desert with scattered groves of piñon and juniper trees. The camp serves as a convenient home base for launching adventures across the San Luis Valley to various local Hot Springs, archeological sites, and other small town local attractions. For the more adventurous guests, there is recreation right from Tin Can Camp with The Valleys largest trail system and climbing area less than a mile away and access to the vast expanse of the Rio Grande National Forest. The cabins are "micro homes" outfitted with modern conveniences. Each cabin has solar power, a propane heater, a compact kitchen with a sink, water jugs, and pump, two full size loft beds, a small table with chairs, an incinerator toilet, and a covered porch. Incinerating toilets are self-contained waste management systems that burn human waste instead of flushing it into a sewer or septic system. These toilets use propane gas to incinerate waste at high temperatures, reducing it to a small amount of sterile ash. Incinerating toilets are commonly used in locations where traditional plumbing is impractical, such as remote cabins and environmentally sensitive areas. They are valued for their efficiency, minimal environmental impact, and the elimination of the need for water or chemical treatments. There is odor associated with the incineration process. Guests should know there is no water available on the property. You will need to bring water for all your needs. This includes cooking, washing, drinking, and for putting out fires. Guest should plan 2 gallons of water per person per day. A public well/pumphouse is at the intersection of County Road 38A and Road 40G (37.836363, -106.271551)(inoperable as of 7/11/2024- BLM working to fix it). Tin Can Camp is adjacent to the future Sangre de Cristo Dark Sky Reserve, and the property has spectacular views of the Milky Way Galaxy. Each cabin has a fire ring for guests to relax and enjoy the dark nighttime sky. Wood collecting on the property is not permitted, so guests must bring their own firewood. As mentioned, the property is located at the entrance to Penitente Canyon. Penitente Canyon is a Nationally-renowned climbing destination with more than 400 climbing routes. Penitente Canyon also has 30+ miles of non-motorized trails for mountain biking, hiking, and equestrian activities and guest have direct trail access from camp! Guests can ride mountain bikes directly from the property. There are numerous recreation, sightseeing, historical and cultural, and agricultural tourism opportunities in the nearby Rio Grande National Forest, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, and Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area. Gas, ice, water, and some groceries can be found nearby at the La Garita Trading Post, which has operated since 1913. The La Garita Trading Post is in a historic log cabin and serves the best local-beef burgers in the San Luis Valley.

The Sand Dunes are 90 minutes and Monarch Ski Area is 45, we have some of the best bird watching! Warbling Vireo, Western Wood-peewee, Cassin's Kingbird to name a few.

The surrounding valley has lots to offer from the quant little towns and coffee shops to the home style meals at the restaurants. and all the hot springs are amazing. Your site is overlooking the Sangre de Christo mountain range. The land is Alpine desert with sagebrush and ground cactus and incredible star gazing. There are 2 great hiking trails within a couple miles. There are 3 hot springs within 30 minutes. The Great sand dunes national park is within 1hr. The San Luis valley offers, hiking, mountain biking, ATV trail, Horse back riding, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, rafting, refuges for wildlife watching. New for 2024, The flushable toilet and shower are now operational. The shower house is located in the center of the loop with sites 1,2,3 on the south side of the building. It has an on demand water heater, there is also a a flushable toilet located in the same space. An important note about the toilet, Do Not flush anything other than toilet paper please. DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products, napkins or hand wipes or anything other than toilet paper. These type of things plug and burn up the pump while pumping out the tank. This will cause the toilet to be unusable. ATTENTION: THE SHOWER HOUSE AND TOILET WILL BE SHUTTING DOWN AND GETTING WINTERIZED OCTOBER 1ST UNTIL MAY 1ST. No fireworks are permitted at any time.

We are also located 1/2 mile from some of the most famous mountain biking trails the USA offers. Mount Princeton Hot Springs are a beautiful 10.5 mile (15 min) drive away. Our campground offers a dreamy Bathhouse with 5 glamoured showers and 5 bathrooms. We have (14) Yurt glamping sites and (2) Riverfront studio cabins. All sites have electricity (heaters included), parking, fire pits (unless we are facing a fire ban), and picnic table.
