Your site is overlooking the Sangre de Christo mountain range. The land is Alpine desert with sagebrush and ground cactus and incredible star gazing. There are 2 great hiking trails within a couple miles. There are 3 hot springs within 30 minutes. The Great sand dunes national park is within 1hr. The San Luis valley offers, hiking, mountain biking, ATV trail, Horse back riding, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, rafting, refuges for wildlife watching.
New for 2024, The flushable toilet and shower are now operational. The shower house is located in the center of the loop with sites 1,2,3 on the south side of the building. It has an on demand water heater, there is also a a flushable toilet located in the same space. An important note about the toilet, Do Not flush anything other than toilet paper please. DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products, napkins or hand wipes or anything other than toilet paper. These type of things plug and burn up the pump while pumping out the tank. This will cause the toilet to be unusable.

Welcome to the San Luis Valley; the largest Alpine Valley in the world!
San Luis Valley is a region in south-central Colorado with a small portion overlapping into New Mexico. My property has 360 degree mountains views with the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range as our back yard. Nearby you can find many different trail systems for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking to jeeping, ATV or dirt biking and equestrians - you can find it all!
You will be surrounded by BLM land, BACA land, and Wildlife Refuge just two miles away. Be sure to bring extra bug spray and protection needed against biting insects such as flies, gnats, and mosquitoes.
For those bringing your pets, they MUST be on a leash/lead at all times. While I do not have much cactus on my property, I do have an abundance of greasewood (Chico brush) which is very thorn-like if stepped on.
Accommodations for those with livestock or horses, just make sure you chat in advance your initial message.
Close to BLM, and National Forest as well as 3 hot springs within 20 miles and the Great Sand Dunes.

There is access to white water rafting, guided fishing, and fishing lessons. There are at least 5 hot springs within 60 miles of Twin Bridges Campground. Salida is considered the white-water rafting capitol of the US by some and has a whitewater park and surfing wave. Salida area is also home to a ton of hiking (14'ers anyone?) and mountain biking trails. The Royal Gorge is a quick 30 minute drive with restaurants and other fun near Canon City. The Sand Dunes are 90 minutes and Monarch Ski Area is 45, we have some of the best bird watching! Warbling Vireo, Western Wood-peewee, Cassin's Kingbird to name a few.

Potable water is available at the blue ground hydrant in front of the little cabin to the west. It takes about 10 seconds to start running.

Camp Penguin at Wandering Penguin Ranch (facebook.com/CampPenguin) in southern Colorado is about a 3 hour drive from the Denver metro area, two hours from Colorado Springs and just under an hour north west of Canon City. We provide a variety of site options to choose from including tent sites, car/van/truck sites, and rustic trailer site options - all with NO amenities (NO electric/septic/water, etc). Additional vehicle parking on the property can be accommodated for groups with more than one vehicle. The Sheep Mountain property it’s located in a mountainous area. There are 7 miles of dirt and mountainous roads from the highway to the property. Although the dirt roads are maintained there may be grooves and ruts in some areas due to weather. Please be advise that trucks and four-wheel vehicles will have a much easier time navigating these roads.
Other vehicles may need to slow down and take it easy through some potentially rough areas.
PROPERTY UPDATE:
DUE TO THE RECENT WIND STORM, SOME TREES WERE UPROOTED AND BLOWN OVER ON THE PROPERTY. TREES WERE REMOVE FROM THE ROAD AND CAMP SITES. SOME ARE STILL DOWN IN THE AREA. WE ARE WORKING WITH LOCAL CONTRACTORS TO HAVE THEM CUT DOWN FOR FIREWOOD AND MOVED OUT OF THE WAY.
THE DOWNED TREES DO NOT INTERFERE WITH THE ABILITY FOR YOU TO BRING YOUR RV OR TENT TO SETUP CAMP.
FEEL FREE TO GATHER THE DOWNED TREES AND BRANCHES TO USE FOR FIREWOOD.

This place was so beautiful. A hidden gem I like to call it. The host was very kind and greeted us upon arriving with a nice welcome and map for us. So many different types of camping options here. We walked by all of them and they were all well kept and overlooked the river. We didn’t want to leave.

We LOVED camping here in our roof-top tent. Since we arrived after dark we stuck to the main dirt road and pulled off into open space toward the end of it to sleep. We came early April - it was a perfect breezy night. Convenient to I25 but we never heard any road noise. For directions we followed Google Maps along with the host’s detailed written directions. Had no problem at all. And if we did I’m sure we could have reached out to the host. He is super responsive. Thank you for allowing us to camp on your land!

I would like to recommend Dan's land considering I booked and looked forward to camping MTNMN Ranch based on HICAMP options. Sadly, I was unable to reach the site to stay.
I have been talking to friends about me finding Dan to be a remarkable person with communicating, he is understanding and I can't wait to be able to rebook. Plus, I can't wait for friends who plan to visit CO opt to stay and share their experience with me.

We loved our (too short) stay. It is a remarkable spot: at the summit of a tall hill and with 360 degree panoramic views of the Spanish Peaks (south), Cuerna Verde (west), Fishers Peak Mesa (southeast), prairie buttes to the east, and the Wet Mtns north. There were plenty of windbreaks to shelter behind and there's a cool bike/hike path around the back side of the ridge. A great vantage point!

Salida RV is such a gem. We love this place so much, we're coming back for a month (or more) in the summer. We stayed in a spot right on the river, and it was so peaceful listening to the sound of the Arkansas River. The sites and clubhouse are super clean, and the park was very quiet.

Peaceful slice of heaven with accommodating and welcoming hosts. Amazing communication, flexible check in/out and escorted me right to the camp location. Mary Anne's muffins are out of this world delicious and the size of my head! If I'm in the area again, I will definitely stay with these hosts again and would highly recommend anyone to pay them a visit. It was exactly what I needed to start my 2026 camping season off. We were glad to get out. It was easy to find and was pretty peaceful overall.
Unfortunately there was a burn ban so no fire but they had the set up for it.
John was helpful and nice would love to go back when we have more time and maybe when it warms up a bit. Was still a bit chilly at night.

It’s a beautiful place. Clean and well maintained by the wonderful people who own it. Listening to the river and geese was relaxing. Yes, the road is near and you hear the cars and trucks but it’s in a river canyon so we just ignored that and enjoyed ourselves. Good places to eat nearby (check out the MUG) and a good base camp location for anything in or around Colorado Springs.
10/10 will return.
