The Lost Dutchman Italian Bar Camp is a 160 acres of Priviately Owned Patented Mining land and our priviate campground located in the Stanislaus National Forest and on the South Fork of the Stanislaus River, which runs through the camp.
Camping is available on both side of the river making the Italian Bar camp a destination for campers since we rebuilt the camp from the ground up in the late 1970’s.
Whether you want to relax in your campsite listening to the river, dip your toes in the cool waters or try your hand at panning for gold, I-Bar offers all of this and more. There are miles of hiking opportunities around the camp as well, from short river hikes to Trailblazing like the Miners of old. Little History:
The property was discovered and first settled around 1849 as a gold rush mining camp. At one time over 3,000 people lived here and mined for gold. When the gold rush came to an end so did Italian Bar. Until over a hundred years later, In 1976 when our founder fell in love with this remote property and purchased the land and we began rebuilding the I-Bar camp from the ground up and opened it to our members. It didn't hurt that somewhere close by Our founder found a 800oz pocket of gold. Even today, Prospecting for gold is encouraged!
If you want to try your hand at “Gettin on some of the shiny” let the Caretakers know! We have a few gold pans we loan out that are just waiting for some color to make you smile.
Of course we have pans for sale.
If you’re an avid outdoors person, carrying a gold pan with you just makes sense.

The night skies above Finnon Lake will reveal stars unseen in California. Enjoy searching for bullfrogs, and watch the flock of Canadian Geese fly in right at sunset as the horizon blends into the watercolor sky.
This private lake supports the Mosquito Fire Protection District's fire protection efforts and the firefighters of this community. Community volunteers manage the lake for the residents and the Fire Station.
The primary funding source for the Finnon Lake Restoration is the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, which was signed into law in 2004 with a mission to support “efforts that improve the environmental, economic and social well-being of the Sierra Nevada Region, its communities and the residents of California,” according to its Website. Finnon Lake is also home to a popular 27-hole disc golf course and Mosquito’s only restaurant, Smoke on the Water Diner, which is open on weekends only. 530-622-1060.

Car and RV campers are welcomed and there is plenty of car/RV parking on the asphalt lot outside the fence at the East Side of the property near the mailboxes at the intersection of Rte 4 and Brice Station Road. Our grassy lawn tent area is inaccessible to vehicles and RVs. Our parking area is adjacent to the highway and may not be what rooftop and van/rv campers are expecting in terms of a peaceful camping experience. If you have tent, it’s recommended to camp out on the lawn. We have tents for rent if you need one.

The Soup is down the driveway a couple hundred yards from where we usually are so you’ll more or less be on your own, depending on if we have work to do down there or if there are other campers. We are happy to chat or leave you be, just let us know what your needs are. If you’re looking for a more isolated spot, see the listings for 1 Pine or 2 Pine.
The 2nd area is “1 Pine” accessed by our second driveway that is 100 yards down the road from the farm. The driveway is kind of rough but definitely manageable with a truck, SUV or sedan if you’re willing to go for it. The drive goes up a couple hundred yards to the hilltop where there is a clearing and, you guessed it, 1 pine tree. From the back of the clearing there is a trail that leads you to 2 Pine, which is a walk that takes just a few minutes. 2 Pine is walk-in only but has great views of the sunset and is totally secluded and private and would be a good spot to either bring some friends for a little sunset party or for someone who wants to seriously unplug. There are plenty of flat spots to pitch a tent.

There is a strict policy that all pet owners pick up waste from their dogs and that dogs be quiet, well-mannered, and under immediate control at all times so as not to disturb other campers. Please be aware that some wildlife species including rattlesnakes, mountain lions, and occasional bear have been observed on the 117-acre property and could potentially be observed near the campsites.

We have one central bathhouse with 3 flushing toilets. Sites vary in distance from a short walk to a short drive. The bathhouse has 4 shower stalls in the rear of the building. The bathhouse is closed from 10pm to 8am. The bathhouse does not have electricity or interior lighting.
Our Hacienda section ("H" Sites) has vault toilets. Portables are located throughout the campground for your convenience.
There is minimal privacy from other campers due to the placement of the sites and the way our trees and vegetation is trimmed for fire resistance.

Off-grid campground adjacent to 1000 acre private reservoir perfect for fishing, kayaking & paddle boarding. 70 acres in Sierra Nevada Foothills with Valley Oaks, Gray Pines & Manzanita. Best birding in Calaveras County with over 188 species including Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles, Osprey & waterfowl.
Reservoir is a no-wake waterbody created for irrigation of the surrounding private rangeland. Jet Skiing and WaterSkiing is not allowed. Boats of all sizes are welcome for the purposes of fishing. Ideal for kayaking, paddleboarding and canoeing with all of those available for rent on site.

July 4-6th - Rocksteady Campout for Celebrate Americana so expect full campground with a laser show on the 4th and live music on Friday and Saturday nights.
Sept 20-21 - Rocksteady Campout with Goonies & Pirates so expect full campground with live music on Friday and Saturday night
Oct 4-5 - Rocksteady Campout TBD so expect full campground with live music on Friday and Saturday night.

Private property on a private reservoir. Enjoy some quiet time on the water, swimming, fishing, camping or just sitting and enjoying this hidden gem. Conveniently located a couple minutes from town to get some groceries or even fast food and gas. Also minutes from the large lake of New Hogan if your brining a jet ski or boat. Come relax on this 10 acres of private water access.
Fish till your heart is content. Please catch and release. We have a variety of fish: Bass, Blue Gill, Cat fish and even some big Carp. Use our canoe or paddle boat or bring your own kayak, SUP, canoe etc.
Newly added large floating dock, sand beach and large swing set/ hammock polls. Come play and have fun and listen to the sounds of frogs at night and the birds in the morning.

What a great place! Very clean and private. There’s a gated entry, walking trail, grill, covered picnic table and the hosts were super accommodating.

My wife, our dog and I had a great time. Julie met with us when we arrived and made us feel very welcome. This a secluded site and they have done a great job decorating it. There is a winery and restaurants minutes away. We will be back

It felt like you were in your own little oasis. Very private and quiet, especially during the Memorial Holiday! Saw a few deer and one decided to hang out in our campsite for a few hours. I highly recommend Squirrel Rock Campground and Julie was an awesome host!

We really enjoyed this campground. It was very unique, private and yet close to town. We would highly recommend it to all!!! Our family was able to camp right beside us and all the grandkids enjoyed the box of games and exploring, we also played horseshoes and watched the abundent wildlife in this natural setting. 10 Stars from all of us!!!

We had the best time camping here with family. It is so unique and so beautiful. Very private! We enjoyed watching all the animals and even had a deer come through the camp. We would highly recommend squirrel rock campground. We enjoyed playing horseshoes and hide and seek with the grandkids!

We’re nuts about it! What a great place to stay! Easy access and parking. Beautifully landscaped and so interesting. Julie was so welcoming and communication was wonderful. Exactly as described…actually…better! Goes above and beyond for a campground….Games, campfire, covered picnic area, horseshoe pits, clean gravel, no dirt…the list of all the little touches goes on! Very private. We would stay again!

We absolutely LOVED staying here. It was our own little paradise! Julie was so welcoming and kind and we felt right at home here. The outdoor grill and fire pit was such a wonderful addition as well as the games! I cannot recommend this place enough and we can’t wait to come back one day and explore the town more.

We enjoyed this lovely spot for five days. We had busy days, and it was unseasonably hot. So late afternoon in the breezy shade of the oak tree, reading my book, was a just wonderful. After a few weeks of being on the road, I really appreciated doing laundry. Also, the two kitties are very friendly.

This is 2nd time at this campground, so perhaps it goes without saying that I think it's awesome!! I decided to do a little mini solo camp out and felt safe/secure the whole time on my own. Water, electricity, and wifi all worked great during my stay. The campsite has a gravel base, so if towing a heavier rig, best to use 4-wheel drive.
Such a special spot and close to fun things like Columbia historic park and just a short drive to Sonora. I also did some great hiking just a 10 minute drive away.
