The Lost Dutchman Italian Bar Camp is a 160 acres of Priviately Owned Patented Mining land and our priviate campground located in the Stanislaus National Forest and on the South Fork of the Stanislaus River, which runs through the camp.
Camping is available on both side of the river making the Italian Bar camp a destination for campers since we rebuilt the camp from the ground up in the late 1970’s.
Whether you want to relax in your campsite listening to the river, dip your toes in the cool waters or try your hand at panning for gold, I-Bar offers all of this and more. There are miles of hiking opportunities around the camp as well, from short river hikes to Trailblazing like the Miners of old. We are betting that you can find the types of hiking you are looking for.
You camping includes access to the Bathhouse with commodes and showers. And yes there is even hot water.
Little History:
The property was discovered and first settled around 1849 as a gold rush mining camp. At one time over 3,000 people lived here and mined for gold. When the gold rush came to an end so did Italian Bar. Until over a hundred years later, In 1976 when our founder fell in love with this remote property and purchased the land and we began rebuilding the I-Bar camp from the ground up and opened it to our members. It didn't hurt that somewhere close by Our founder found a 800oz pocket of gold. Even today, Prospecting for gold is encouraged!
If you want to try your hand at “Gettin on some of the shiny” let the Caretakers know! We have a few gold pans we loan out that are just waiting for some color to make you smile.
Of course we have pans for sale.
If you’re an avid outdoors person, carrying a gold pan with you just makes sense.

Car and RV campers are welcomed and there is plenty of car/RV parking on the asphalt lot outside the fence at the East Side of the property near the mailboxes at the intersection of Rte 4 and Brice Station Road. Our grassy lawn tent area is inaccessible to vehicles and RVs. Our parking area is adjacent to the highway and may not be what rooftop and van/rv campers are expecting in terms of a peaceful camping experience. If you have tent, it’s recommended to camp out on the lawn. We have tents for rent if you need one.

The Soup is down the driveway a couple hundred yards from where we usually are so you’ll more or less be on your own, depending on if we have work to do down there or if there are other campers. We are happy to chat or leave you be, just let us know what your needs are. If you’re looking for a more isolated spot, see the listings for 1 Pine or 2 Pine.
The 2nd area is “1 Pine” accessed by our second driveway that is 100 yards down the road from the farm. The driveway is kind of rough but definitely manageable with a truck, SUV or sedan if you’re willing to go for it. The drive goes up a couple hundred yards to the hilltop where there is a clearing and, you guessed it, 1 pine tree. From the back of the clearing there is a trail that leads you to 2 Pine, which is a walk that takes just a few minutes. 2 Pine is walk-in only but has great views of the sunset and is totally secluded and private and would be a good spot to either bring some friends for a little sunset party or for someone who wants to seriously unplug. There are plenty of flat spots to pitch a tent.

Pets are limited to one large dog OR two small to medium sized dogs per campsite. There is a strict policy that all pet owners pick up waste from their dogs and that dogs be quiet, well-mannered, and under immediate control at all times so as not to disturb other campers. Please be aware that some wildlife species including rattlesnakes, skunks, mountain lions, and bears (very seldom) have been observed on the 117-acre property and could potentially be observed near the campsites. Important notes:
We are off-grid. There is no electricity in the campground with exception of a small solar powered system to operate our entry gate, guest Wi-Fi and intercom. Outlets are not available for guest use.
Our campground is home to wildlife. You can minimize unwanted encounters by properly storing food and garbage.
We have one central bathhouse with 3 flushing toilets. Sites vary in distance from a short walk to a short drive. The bathhouse has 4 shower stalls in the rear of the building. The bathhouse is closed from 10pm to 8am. The bathhouse does not have electricity or interior lighting.
Our Hacienda section ("H" Sites) has vault toilets. Portables are located throughout the campground for your convenience.
There is minimal privacy from other campers due to the placement of the sites and the way our trees and vegetation is trimmed for fire resistance.

Palala Ranch is 20 acres of forested and inclined terrain. Located midway between the Bay Area and Lake Tahoe, it's a great stop off point on your way to the snow and the mountains. Being in the middle of gold country, there's several small historic gold mining towns that are really fun to visit. The Shenandoah Valley wine country is only 25 minutes away. This property is the beginning of a dream that we want all of our guests to be apart of. Using feedback and suggestions mingled with our vision, we want guests to contribute to the growth of this dream. Everytime guests return there will be new features and improvements for them to enjoy and to provide the best experience we can work the current resources. Beautiful private site(s). Thoughtfully laid out. Close to so much but we enjoyed staying at the site as well. It was too hot for hiking but there are trails right there. Would stay again.

Cook’s Station Campground was so peaceful. Chris was great with communication. He answered questions quickly. This was a great price to have shade, a nice view, electric hook ups, a dump station at the site, and water. The campground is small but a peaceful home for a couple nights. The surrounding forest area is beautiful and just what we needed before we get back to our school and work routines. We drove about 30 minutes and checked out some local lakes-Silver Lake and Bear Lake. We also had breakfast at the restaurant on site. The ladies working were very friendly. Thank you!

Squirrel Rock Campground is one of the best, most unique campsites you will ever come across. Excellent quality, commercial grade electric pedestals, and dual water hookups in an immaculately maintained site. Covered table with a tub full of great games. Amazing details and touches throughout the camp area and beyond. Beautiful boulders and Rock outcroppings. You'll be tickled by all the amusing details. A marked trail where you will find deer, quail, and of course Squirrels! There are many attractions nearby. We even caught an amazing show (Don't Touch That Dial), at the Fallon Theater, which is located at the Columbia State Historic Park. The cast was so good, and it was the most fun we've ever er had at a theater show. Catch it if you can! We love SRC, and will be returning for more fun and relaxing privacy. Chris was amazing, we had such a wonderful time. No complaints here, the campground is clean and roomy. Chris goes about and beyond makes sure that everyone has what they need and he encourages to visit other places. Chris also told us where to go and see. Thank you and many blessings.

Hands down our best Hipcamp experience yet! Chris was an incredible host — helpful in every way and made us feel completely taken care of. The site itself was private and beautiful, breakfast at the on-site restaurant was terrific, and there’s such rich history to the property. Hiking was fantastic both on-site and nearby. Can’t recommend this place enough — 5 stars all the way!

It felt like you were in your own little oasis. Very private and quiet, especially during the Memorial Holiday! Saw a few deer and one decided to hang out in our campsite for a few hours. I highly recommend Squirrel Rock Campground and Julie was an awesome host!

I had an excellent stay at Cooks Station Campground. Chris was an exceptional host & made my stay above and beyond what I expected it would be, wished I could have stayed longer.
Check-in was at one of the two fifth wheels behind the restaurant.
Site 10 was perfectly level side to side, easy in & out.
There were plenty of trails right from the campground, which was nice, just be aware of the wildlife presence. Saw a bear & fox the first night & 2 smaller bears further into the woods.
Utilities do get shut off around 9, because they run off a generator, which wasn't an issue.
Only concern was getting in & off CA-88, people fly on that portion & it is kind of a blind turn, just FYI.
Thank you again for a lovely stay! Hope out paths cross again in the future!

We really enjoyed this campground. It was very unique, private and yet close to town. We would highly recommend it to all!!! Our family was able to camp right beside us and all the grandkids enjoyed the box of games and exploring, we also played horseshoes and watched the abundent wildlife in this natural setting. 10 Stars from all of us!!!

We had the best time camping here with family. It is so unique and so beautiful. Very private! We enjoyed watching all the animals and even had a deer come through the camp. We would highly recommend squirrel rock campground. We enjoyed playing horseshoes and hide and seek with the grandkids!

This is our second time here, and we absolutely love it. The privacy and that you get the whole campground to yourself. She provides so much. By far, our favorite place to get away! Definitely will be coming back again!

Beautiful place... not my fav campground, tho. We had site 50. It's down-sloping w/two mostly-flat spots between it and the campsite (53? 51?) at the bottom of the hill. No obvious division here (all trees between have been cut down) between sites, making it unclear which tent site "ought" to belong to which & definitely minimizing privacy. Tons of yellow jackets here. No shower at restroom 5, which is two rustic huts. The 60-74 sites appeared to be more private w/ a bath house. That said, the entire North Grove campground gets all the highway noise (think logging trucks going uphill at 4am) from Route 4. While it was nice to be able to walk to the Big Trees area from this area, I think next time, we'll try the Oak Hollow sites.

We stayed at the environmental sites. The site was unbelievable! It was beautiful, secluded, and the river. However, we had the worst experience with the Rangers and campground. They gave us misinformation about service dogs and kicked us aggressively out at dusk for the dogs being there and not believing that we had a disability for which we needed the dogs. They left us stranded and ejected us from the park despite our paperwork from the park and our ADA cards for the dogs. The treatment and interaction was inappropriate, dangerous, and irrational. This is the second time I have stayed here and both times I received different information from people who worked there.

Just camped at Oak Hollow 113 over Memorial Day weekend. While North Grove seemed a bustle of both campers and extra day visitors, Oak Hollow (over 3 miles further into the park) has more tranquility. Camp spaces felt more spread out, and somewhat more private depending on the spot. A lot of fallen trees, large stumps and creek beds create natures playground which the kids LOVED! It does look like most campsites only have one really good tent space, and some of them don't look that level. Our second tent was definitely on a slant, but I'd book 113 again because the overall site was extremely spacious and private. A double bear box handled 2 families worth of food, which was necessary because there were a couple bears wandering camp.

Stayed 2 summers in a row. Oak Hollow & N. Grove both great sites. However, Oak hollow did have steep hills for camping sites..as in roll off your air mattress, hike down the hill type steep to and from your car. Handicap sites were all satisfactory at both sites. Restrooms&showers were maintained well,My only gripe is no one ever answers any of the calls. We've reserved a group site this year but can't get anyone to confirm whether or not the group sites have showers or the allowable # of cars is including in the $200/nt fee. I realize that a site to accommodate nearly 100 people should have showers of their own but I'd hate to be presumptuous.

I have been coming here since I was a little kid. I absolutely love this place. It can get packed in the warm summer months so get here early. This place is very majestic in the winter with snowfall.

Stayed in site 117. Large site but definitely sloped. There were several steps down from the site's assigned parking area to the picnic table, fire ring, bear locker and tent site. Convenient water spigots and bathrooms throughout the campground. Showers were in a slightly rough shape but overall clean and hot. Staying in Oak Hollow puts you closer to the South Grove loop, an easy two hour hike that's worth doing. Great place overall.

This campground was further from noise of hwy 4 and tourists than North Grove Campground. Nice, shady sites, some quite large. However, many sites are on slopes which means carrying your gear up/down stairs from your car.
