The shared area...
"Lock Lane Point" also referred to as "the Point", is the peninsula that the main roadway ends at (where the BBQ and canoes are), this is a shared area for us and our guests to enjoy. Guests are encouraged to come and go as they like, be welcoming and inclusive and try not to "take over". This spot features a large picnic table, a communal propane BBQ, some comfortable chairs, a large boulder for taking in the river and the sunshine from and there is a fire-pit. This is also the preferred location for swimming and for setting off on your canoe/kayak/paddle-board river adventures, as it features a shallow entry and rocky bottom. One such adventure, is to head upriver, around an island, and loop back through the remaining historic canal. ...It's a historic lazy river!
Many amenities are only 1-3 kms away, such as a gas station (with vehicle charging stations), an IGA grocery store and several restaurants including, McDonald's, Tim Horton's. You will also find some of the best poutine around, for a traditional poutine, try Jos Patate (they've been there for many decades now) and for a wild variety of poutine, head to La Fromagerie ...want ice cream, La Crémière is in the same building.
Many tourism attractions such as white water rafting on the Rouge River and the Parc Omega zoo are located nearby (10-25 km. away). And day trips to Ottawa, Montreal or the Calypso water park are about 1 hours drive away.
A little History...
Our property has played host to a portion of the rich history of this area which included three railway tracks, a canal and a lock. The railway beds remain and the lock has simply been flooded over.
Following the war of 1812, three Ottawa river canal systems were constructed between 1819 and 1833 to bypass the Long Sault Rapids on the Ottawa river. These canals were in use until 1961 when a large portion of the canal system was submerged due to the construction of a hydro-electric dam (~22kms downriver) at Carillion. As a result, the river level at our property rose high enough to submerge the top of the lock walls by ~3.5 feet. This submerged lock is located a few hundred feet offshore and can be seen using Google Earth as it measures 50' x 300' in size. Once you have a good idea where it is, throw on your water shoes and a life jacket and enjoy an interesting experience of walking on the walls of a submerged lock.
