Red Cedar Plains

4 sites · RVs, Tents110 acres · Prince Edward, ON
The 110-acre estate has been overtaken with Red Cedars at the front of the property, and also has a mature forest at the rear of the property. It has become a sort of refuge for wildlife. Deer, bunnies, and even Coyotes roam freely on what has over the past 20 or 30 years become a young forest. This is a place of quiet reflection. however, it is also a great place to reunite with loved ones over exciting conversations, music, and drinks over the flame of a campfire. However, we exercise a quiet hours policy starting at 11pm. No loud music or loud talking. We are in close proximity to the first and most prominent vineyard in PEC. (Wauppos Estates). They have some of the best wine you will find here, and spectacular gardens on the lake with a south-facing dock. Grab a glass of wine and wander the grounds. They also have a petting zoo, ice cream, and a market where you can grab food, drinks, or some fresh local produce. Nearby there are blueberry and strawberry fields where you can pick your own fruit. Right around the corner from us we have our favourite wine maker at Amanda’s Winery.

Black Maple Farm

4 sites · Lodging, Tents6 acres · Harrowsmith, ON
For the last 25 years we have lived here on our 6 acres of property where our Maple Sugar Bush allows us to produce our very own maple syrup every spring. [Side note: The sugar shack itself has been on the property for over 40 years.] We also raise a small but varied collection of farm animals, grow vegetables, and operate a 3 generation (Mother, Daughter, and Granddaughter) Artisan Craft Business, that sells handmade "Canadiana Themed" Home Decor goods and Maple Products at our local Farmer's Market. ( Visit us on Instagram or Facebook @Blackmaplefarm) Our Farm is located on the very edge of the Canadian Shield, so most of the landscape is a rocky, rugged, and naturally wooded. Throughout the property are numerous short, looping, walking trails that meander throughout the Sugar bush, pasture area, 3 season pond, and our farm animal "homes". These trails are perfect for short nature walks, where you'll experience natural wildflowers and plants, see and hear song birds, small animal wildlife and of course, farm life too. We are also located on the edge of the Eastern Ontario "Dark Sky" Area, which means we have a very nice view from the edge of our pasture of the North Sky stars on a clear night, with very minimal light pollution. Our varied collection of farm animals includes; lots of chickens, (including roosters who DO crow in the early morning hours), miniature goats, horses, a couple of barn cats, and a dog. During your stay with us you are welcome to come learn about and interact with our animals and daily farm life, if you so desire, and farm fresh eggs and maple syrup are also available to purchase too.

Bushwood!

3 sites · Tents55 acres · Godfrey, ON
This area was once the bottom of a glacial lake as can be evidenced by the abundance of smooth round rocks. You will see many of the rocks have been piled up or made into walls to once make way for cattle to pasture. Now the land is slowly returning back to the forest. We work hard to be environmentally friendly and support the abundance of wildlife living in the area. Choose from three uniquely different areas for country camping on 55 acres.: Pine Solitude! : A Slice of Heaven site tucked into a stand of white pines on a peninsula, overlooking a shallow lake with three islands. Walk-in (approx. 800m) Big Sky Solitude! : Our best site for stargazing on an open peninsula, overlooking a shallow lake with three islands. Walk-in (approx. 600m) Meadow Bluff! : A sweet, secluded spot on a raised bluff overlooking a lovely, quiet meadow. The site is tucked into the edge of a white pine forest. Walk-in (approx. 400m).

Off-grid Waterfront Forest Camp

4 sites · RVs, Tents20 acres · South Frontenac, ON
Learn more about this land: Welcome to our Off-grid Waterfront Forest Campground!  We have 20 Acres (mostly forested) and 4 campsites to choose from for both tent campers and RV/trailer campers.  There is plenty of space to pitch your tent and a large area for parking. The site is suitable for RVs 45 feet or less (you will be parking on grass/gravel). The trail to the water is about a 10 minute hike from the parking area. The water has quite a lot of algae by the shore. Great for paddling or fishing not so much for swimming. There are multiple fire-pits scattered across the property. Compost toilet outhouse is by the parking area next to the shipping container. Choose from multiple sites from a grassy/gravel semi-private area near the driveway with car access or hike up the bedrock (50metres from driveway) for an amazing view of the stars and moon, or for optimal privacy, there are campsites available along the trails in the forest. We are located right by the Rideau Canal, Lock 45 - Lower Brewers (please note that bridge is currently under construction - access is through Sunbury road or Battersea) We also have many trails and lakes nearby and Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area is only a 20-minute drive. This is a great hike close to Kingston, especially in the fall. The track is also groomed for XC Skiing in the winter. This is one of many possible hikes here and takes me between 1 and 2 hours. It's a great escape if you just have a little time.  We run our property solely on solar energy so electrical output is minimal. There is a 3 prong extension cord available for use by the outhouse that can take small loads such as lights, charging electronics, and higher loads during sunlight hours. Campfires are permitted (firewood available at 5$/crate), pets are welcome, and potable water is available on the property. We also have wifi and cell reception!

Camping near Kingston guide

Overview

Kingston has a rich history, where visitors can learn about Canada’s early days and explore the shores of the St. Lawrence River along multiple waterfront trails. The famous Thousand Islands dotted around the river just east of Kingston attract thousands of sightseers annually, in either their own watercraft or seasonal tour boats. Day trips to the wineries and beaches of Prince Edward County are an easy 1-hour drive each way, and the extensive backcountry of Frontenac Provincial Park is even closer, just 41 kilometres from the city.

Where to go

North of Kingston is one of Ontario’s top spots for backcountry camping. Frontenac is open year-round and caters to both paddlers and backpackers with 12 small clusters of campsites (48 interior campsites in total) that limit the impact on nature while providing basic facilities. Each campsite has a tent pad, firepit, picnic table, privy, and food locker.

“The County” is not quite an island, but it does feel like an escape from the mainland filled with antique shops, wineries, and sandy shores. Campers pack the 500 car camping sites at Sandbanks Provincial Park all summer, and day visitors join them on the popular beachfront. Rent a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard to enjoy the water even more.

Thousand Islands

The Thousand Islands in the St. Lawrence River create a complex archipelago. Thousand Islands National Park comprises 19 of these islands, and primitive camping is available on many of them. Navigation can be difficult due to dangerous shoals, so purchase a good set of charts unless you are in a canoe or kayak. Several private campgrounds operate near the Thousand Islands Parkway on the river’s north shore.

When to go

If you’re planning to enjoy the water, July and August are the warmest times to take a dip but also the hardest times to book a campsite. Choose a spring or fall trip for a more relaxing experience, with fewer crowds. Campsites in Thousand Islands National Park are available from late May to mid-October.

Know before you go

  • As a university town, Kingston is relatively quiet from June to August, while the students are away for the summer.
  • Cycling is a great way to see Kingston’s waterfront, and there are also cycling routes throughout the city.
  • Prince Edward County is home to dozens of craft winemakers, cideries, and breweries. Most offer tastings and onsite shops.
  • The three large beaches at Sandbanks Provincial Park are natural dunes and considered some of the best sandy beaches in Canada.
