Better Farm is a 65-acre organic farm, animal sanctuary, artist colony, and retreat space. Located adjacent to our horse farm, Hipcampers are welcome to hike on our trails. We offer horse back riding and carriage driving lessons. Conveniently located between the St Lawrence Seaway and the foothill Adirondacks there are lots or opportunities for outdoor recreation. There are plenty of hikes for all abilities and duration. If paddling is more your thing our county has 3 of the 10 longest rivers in NYS along with lakes and reservoirs. There are also nearby mountain bike trails, and we are not far from the St Lawrence County Multi Use Trail. While there are many interesting and interactive destinations close by, larger cultural destinations such as Ottawa or Montreal make great day trips.

Leishman point is owned by the Town of Waddington and was created during the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway. Dredge spoils were transported and placed creating a tract of land that rises 50 feet above the river and surrounding lands. The New York Power Authority acquired the property from the Leishman's who owned and operated a farm on the surrounding lands. In 2000, the New York Power Authority deemed the property surplus and conveyed it to the Town of Waddington. This Hip-Camp endeavor is hopefully our first step in creating a fully functional RV Park and campsite for everyone to enjoy. Visit the Town of Waddington Museum at the Old Town Hall for more information on the construction of the the St. Lawrence Seaway and how it transformed Waddington. Learn more about this land: Park your RV or camper trailer or pitch your tent on top of Leishman Point in Waddington, New York and enjoy the unobstructed views of, and unlimited access to the majestic St. Lawrence River. The Waddington public beach is adjacent to the campsite with swimming, playground, and pavilion for all to enjoy. Bring your boat and safely moor it at the public docks at the beach. Our property was purchased and farmed by my ancestors in 1803. They cleared the meadow area of trees and rocks and established the stone wall, enclosing the area. A hemlock and pine forest at the edge of the meadow leads to our 50-acre wetland preserve which provides habitat for many bird and wildlife species. LOCATION: We are located 30 miles from Ogdensburg, NY, on Black Lake. 40 miles from Fort Drum, a good commute if you work on Drum. Hubby and I do it everyday and it isn't so bad and 2 hrs from Syracuse. Echo's gas station is located 10 minutes from us and has gas, kerosene and propane. Great pizza and wings and odds and ends. Ogdensburg has Lowe's, Aldi's and Walmart. Thousand Islands is 20 minutes from us. Mini Golf on rte 6 10-15min. Langbrook Meadows Golf is 20 minutes. State Launch Ramp is 15 minutes away. Jacques State park has a beach. AMENITIES: THE CAMPER IS ON OUR PROPERTY 100YDS FROM BLACK LAKE. You'll have full access to the Lake. So feel free to bring your kayaks, paddle boards and canoes, boats and fishing poles (great fishing). We have some kayaks you can use too with lifejackets

Access to the lake is directly from the back right of the camp down a little path with staked in steps and a hand rail. Available for use are 3 kayaks, a canoe and 2 paddle boats for your enjoyment along with life vests. Guests have access to the entire house, use of the yard, propane grill, fire pit, 3 kayaks, a canoe, and a 2 paddle boats. Guests are also able to enjoy walking the private road around the lake. Bug Spray is provided but feel free to bring your own. I supply the brand OFF. Please respect any neighbors, property, and obey all posted signs. Guests will not have access to the shed. Please be respectful of the camp as I am opening my getaway home to share its beauty with you. All I ask is you respect and treat it as your own. Rural, secluded, wooded area in Amish country, roads are shared with horse and buggies please use caution. Then road to the camp is accessible by gravel/dirt private road. Blind curves and narrow road, again please use caution. Camp is located not too far from exploring surrounding areas like Black Lake, the Thousand Islands, Canada, Sackets Harbor, Clayton, Alexandria Bay and Watertown, and the Adirondack Park. They all are within a day's travel. The water is supplied by a spring fed well and is perfectly safe to drink, shower, and cook with. The lake is private and unfortunately offers no public access for motorized boats.

Located in a hay meadow that is farmed 2 to 3 times a year to provide food for our animals. Next to the meadow is a mix of maple and pine trees. In the spring we use the maple trees for maple syrup production. Learn more about this land:This site is close to the road but easy to access. It is located where there was once an old stone barn, and all that is left is the stone foundation. Set around shrubbery trees, with two big maples at the parking spot to provide shade and coverage. You look out to an open hay meadow. That abuts our maple sugar stand with a mix of pine trees in the woods. You will be able to watch lots of deer frolic and play in the meadow and hear the sounds of the wildlife and birds around the woods. We loved being here on Peggy’s land. It was so quiet and secluded, the perfect place to camp. We visited the horses and said hello to them. A barred owl lulled us to sleep. Very serene and quiet. Lovely. My only recommendation for other camperis that you need very long hoses and cords as the hookups are not close to the concrete pad.

We pulled into the spot at night, it was easy to find and perfectly level. That is all I knew when I went to sleep. In the morning, I woke up, pulled down the window shade, and had a beautiful view of multiple horses ~100 meters away. Spectacular. The water was easy to access, but the 50A power was accessible, and my shore power cord was too short. That was fine. I highly recommend this location!

Wonderful spot and view! We were the only ones there which was great as the sites are very close together. They are not in the field anymore and lined up side by side. We’re not sure how we would have liked it if others were there. But the views were awesome. We do travel with our dog and there are a lot of dog walkers especially in the evening. Most are respectful and keep their dogs on leash but not everyone and we did have a dog run up to us while we were in our screen tent having dinner with our dog. We wish people would respect the rules but there’s always people who don’t. We were there mid September.

I was in the Potsdam area for several days and found this gem on hipcamp. The site is at the corner of a huge hayfield. No other people in sight, although some deer did wander across the far edge of the field one evening. I went over and met the sheep and cows. That is definitely an add on to consider for this site. Coffee at Park Bagels in Canton is super convenient, and if you are in a rush, there is a Tim Horton's nearby.

Popular for kayaking, picnicking, and convenient camping getaways, the park is about 175 kilometres north of Syracuse, New York. The Mallorytown Landing Visitor Centre, with a small oTENTik (platform tent) camping area, is along the 1000 Islands Parkway between the eastern Ontario towns of Gananoque and Brockville. You can also camp on a dozen of the park islands that you can reach by canoe, kayak, or water taxi.

Tips for snagging a campsite

You can reserve 27 of the park’s campsites, as well as oTENTiks located on the mainland and on MacDonald and Gordon islands, via the Parks Canada online reservations system.
Reservations open for the season in mid-January. The park also has 34 island campsites that are first-come, first-served.
If you don’t have your own boat, remember to book a spot on one of the water taxis that take campers to the islands, or reserve a kayak, canoe, or other boat rental.

When to go

Thousand Islands National Park is open from mid-May through mid-October. Weekdays throughout the season are less crowded than weekends. While the park is busiest in July and August and during Canadian and U.S. long weekends, the best time to visit is in the fall, when the weather is usually comfortable and the trees take on their autumn colors. Another good time to come is the first half of June, which is typically less crowded than mid-summer.

Know before you go

Though located in Ontario, Thousand Islands is closer to Montreal (225 kilometres) than to Toronto (320 kilometres).
Both Ganaoque and Brockville have supermarkets and other stores stocking supplies for campers. Kingston, the region’s largest town, is 30 minute’s drive west of Gananoque.
Check the park website for local boat companies that can shuttle you to the islands and for canoe, kayak, and other boat rentals.
None of the park islands have shops or services, other than boat launches and composting toilets, so pack everything in and out. Central Grenadier is the only island with drinking water.
