A tranquil sanctuary of peace and solitude to soothe the soul, Simcoe Island is a bird watcher paradise, so close to the city of Kingston yet a world where time has stopped. Accommodations are a 16’ x 20’ prospector wall tent, set up with queen size deluxe air mattress, bunk bed and single cots for extra guests. We have a food prep table, dishes, frying pan and cooking pot, a small microwave, single induction cooktop, small bar fridge and a kettle and coffee maker. You can eat your meals at the picnic table inside the tent or at the outside picnic table. There is a kerosene heater for cooler nights and a wood pellet stove which will heat the tent during the winter months. An outdoor dishwashing station is available with on demand hot water. We have a basic dug privy. There are bicycles available to use to explore the island and there are 3 kayaks and 2 canoes for paddling in the sheltered channel and the lake. Fishing generally is good. Ferry toll is $10 for a return trip and the ferry from downtown Kingston to Wolfe Island is free. Linens and sleeping bags are available if requested . FALL and WINTER CAMPING at Windpsalm: Kerosene and/or wood pellets costs will be discussed prior to or upon guests arrival during the fall and winter months. The pellet stove's fan tends to be a bit noisy but it does a good job of making the tent warm and comfortable. Fen stayed in the tent in February when the overnight temperatures were -25C and the inside temperature on the back wall was 18C. Fen's grandchildren are also regular winter campers at Windpsalm. We can also provide a few sets of snowshoes and if requested a popup ice fishing hut. In the event that the snow is too deep for your vehicle, we will transport our guests to the tent in our farm John Deere Gator.

For the last 26 years we have lived here on our 6 acres of property where our Maple Sugar Bush allows us to produce our very own maple syrup every spring. These trails are perfect for short nature walks, where you'll experience natural wildflowers and plants, see and hear song birds, small animal wildlife and of course, farm life too. We are also located on the edge of the Eastern Ontario "Dark Sky" Area, which means we have a very nice view from the edge of our pasture of the North Sky stars on a clear night, with very minimal light pollution. Our varied collection of farm animals includes; lots of chickens, (including roosters who DO crow in the early morning hours), miniature goats, horses, a couple of barn cats, and a dog. The Ridge Retreat is 6 acres of beauty topped off with amazing waterfront and an awesome new dock. A gravel road has been prepared from the road access right down to the lake. We recommend that you park on the upper portion of this driveway/road and walk or use an ATV to travel on the trail to the lake. As mentioned, there is about a 40 ft incline just as you approach the clearing down by the lake . Please wear running/walking shoes and descend slowly down either of the 2 trails provided. The trail "Easy Street" is definitely an easier descent and climb. Learn more about this land: Situated just off the main road, The Ridge Retreat offers you the privacy and beauty of 6 unspoiled acres. Follow the gravel walkway/road down (5 min walk) to your amazing private dock situated on Howes Lake, Verona Ontario. Deep, clean water for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, etc.  There are 2 firepits should you decide to have a campfire - one at the road site (RV and trailer) and one at the waters edge.  This property provides privacy and solitude for nature lovers. The designated RV parking spot is up near the main road along with a very nice outhouse but if you decide to tent camp, there are a few choices that would bring you closer to the water's edge.  An additional outhouse is located at the top of the incline to the lake.  The gravel/asphalt trail down by the lake is the steeper of the 2 trails. Choose the "Easy Street" trail off to your right after you pass the stop sign indicating that no vehicles should drive beyond. This trail is a bit longer but a much more gradual incline. Grocery shopping, nature trails, etc are just a few minutes away. The scenic town of Westport is a 30 min drive away with amazing shops and a local winery.

This area was once the bottom of a glacial lake as can be evidenced by the abundance of smooth round rocks. You will see many of the rocks have been piled up or made into walls to once make way for cattle to pasture. Now the land is slowly returning back to the forest. From our gardens, we harvest fresh vegetables for sale daily (seasonal), fresh eggs, and raw honey from our hard-working bees. We're a quick 25 minute drive to Napanee, and 40 minutes to Kingston. Our property is located 5 minutes from the free ferry to Picton, Prince Edward County. It's a convenient location for exploring historical Loyalist sites, the Tyendinaga Caves, breweries and wineries, Sandbanks Provincial Park, Lake on the mountain, and for fishing in the renowned Hay Bay. There are many nearby water access points including beaches and boat launches. We have 2 kayaks and 2 standup paddle boards available for half-day or full day rental. This is a great place for couples, families, or a girls trip away from it all; it's also an LGBTQ-friendly environment. Beautiful camp spot and lots of room to explore. We had a great time walking the path to the lake and finding frogs and crickets. Very secluded and private. The lake was beautiful and full of fish, the kids caught sunfish from the dock. Sandra was very accommodating and made sure we were okay during our trip. We will for sure be back next year , we had a great time.

We were delighted to spend a night at this gem of a camping spot just minutes to Picton and the Glenora ferry. Alison and Marie were the most accommodating and hospitable hosts, we only wish that we could spend more time here. The goats and chickens were such a fun and interactive feature of the property and we appreciated the charm of the farm life just outside our tent. Would highly recommend this stay to anyone!

Weekend Trip to Wilderness Trails At Sumac

The place is very private and inside the forest which we love. Bruce, our fur baby loved it. We hiked the Cascade Trail and its was fun, very well marked. Victor is very friendly and accommodating. He gave us a tour of the property (Sumac Centre) and the campsite plus an orientation on the trails map. The toilet and shower facilities are very much appreciated. The campsite has basic stuffs needed as advertised. The gazebo entrance zipper was broken so make sure to bring mosquito repellent (we had thermacell). The Little Beaver Lake is small but very calm and private. We did some fishing but only caught small ones. I recommend Victor's place to anyone who wants a break from the city!

This was my second stay here and it was great. Beautiful well kept farm with super friendly hosts. We had unlimited nighttime entertainment with the meteor showers. Even though all the sites were booked while we were there it was still super quiet and peaceful. Whenever I’m in the area next I wouldn’t hesitate to come back a third time.

A good stay- This was my first stay at a Hipcamp. I had booked another location with another host who cancelled on me causing refund problems which took a while to correct. So I was leery about booking another site. Arriving at the location, the host was not home yet which caused me to worry. However, the host showed up within 5 minutes so all was well. She showed me the site and used a tractor to carry down my camp gear. That was unexpected but very welcomed. Bought some firewood to use on my second night. It rained that day so my wood got soaked. Host actually replaced my wet wood with very dry wood. My fire was a one matchstick fire. Enjoyed my evenings here. No isues with me comng and going at odd times. (I was geocaching) Upon leaving early in the morning, I packed up and carried some of my gear to my car. Upon seeing this, the host brought the tractor down to bring back the rest of my gear. I had a pleasant experience over my 2 night stay. Other sites were occupied but there is lots of space between sites. Overall, it was a pleasant experience.

The hosts were amazing! We’ve never felt so welcomed at someone’s place. Not to mention the amazing campground that they offered. The campground was spacious and provided a nice picnic table with a fire pit. The hosts offered to help us bring our camping gear with their tractor to make our camping experience even easier! We got to meet their farm animals at multiple occasions and they provided us with secret beach spots around the area when we found out that there was no space at Sandbanks. Truly an unforgettable experience and would definitely recommend to anyone that wishes to have an incredible camping stay! Would definitely go back just to see the hosts again!

About

Fort Henry National Historic Site is a 19th-century British military fortress situated on Point Henry between the mouth of Kingston harbour and a second natural harbour at the mouth of the Cataraqui River. It sits high on a natural cliff facing the confluence of the eastern end of Lake Ontario with the beginning of the St. Lawrence River. The designation refers to the fort, its redoubt, advanced battery, the former ''dead zone'' to the north and east, and the associated cultural resources found thereon. Operated privately.
