The best camping in Kentucky.

Home to the longest cave system in the world, top-notch climbing, and the "Niagara of the South," Kentucky is so much more than an equestrian's paradise.

Summers in the south get stupid hot. So I jumped in the lake. And I don't regret it.
Tons of places to set up tents, but I hid from the July sun in a little grove of trees.
A little obsessed with these ghosty trees in the lake. Super neat.
Pretty gentle road back to the campsite. Only a couple rough spots, but most vehicles could make it!
There were a couple of squirrels around that legitimately threw things at me from the trees... but they were cute so I let it slide.

As you might expect, Kentucky offers hundreds of miles of horse trails throughout the state. And what better way to explore than grabbing your horse for an adventurous weekend of camping in Kentucky? Daniel Boone National Forest and Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area both offer horse-friendly campgrounds, as do five of the state parks. If you're heading to the Kentucky Derby, stay at a Hipcamp or campground in the Louisville area. Of course not everything in Kentucky centers on the equestrian life. Explore underground at Mammoth Cave National Park and Carter Caves State Resort Park, or visit Cumberland Falls State Resort Park for a chance to see the “Niagara of the South.” If you’re into climbing, you’ll want to visit Red River Gorge at Daniel Boone National Forest, which is consistently ranked as a top global climbing destination.
Little grove of trees was a perfect place to set up the hammock.
Gorgeous sunsets on the country road right by the tent sites.
Zipper was stuck. But the site was really flat, so that was really nice.
Black-eyed Susans were abundant in mid July!
Hard to tell from the photos, but this canyon probably has 40+ ft walls--some great exploring options!!

The cabin!
The setup outside.
The wintertime view up the hill from our house, towards the cabin and bathroom.
The out-bathroom. It used to be a sauna (all cedar) that we converted into a second bathroom. The solar panel on the front powers the tiny vent fan on the composting toilet.
The shower! You submerge the orange pump in a bucket of water (cold, filled up with warm water from our tap in the house, or warmed up by you). It only takes 2-3 gallons to have a pretty luxurious shower. There is natural soap in the bathroom.
