Marmot House is a lush 13 acres of mostly old growth forest in the foothills of Mt. Hood, right on the Historic Oregon Trail. It is close to hiking, biking, and forested waterfalls a short drive away. We have beautiful short hikes on trails in our forest on the property. World class windsurfing 30 miles away in Hood River, as well as more amazing waterfall hikes in the Columbia River Gorge. The Sandy River recreation area is just up the road from us and we are 10 mins. from The Sandy Ridge Trail with its 17 miles of mountain bike trails. Each campsite is tucked in the woods and has access our communal fire pit at our gathering space. Our well water tastes amazing! The is not a developed campground, it is our home. We see ourselves as stewards of this hidden forest gem and welcome people to enjoy its beauty. We are avid campers and recently spend 9 months in our teardrop trailer off grid on public lands. Living here we are three family members, one renter and short term volunteer traveler workers. We all work from home, Arehn a spiritual life coach, who loves to cook, Jim a software engineer and disc golfer, son Ian, software engineer and writer and Zuzu, forest fire fighter and logger lives in a separate apartment on the property.

(Full property use, all campsites) please inquire for details/cost/available dates) *If you don't see a weekend open for dates for a full property booking, please inquire as we have some weekends blocked off for potential weddings/retreats THE PROPERTY: Our campsites are on two beautiful ponds with a seasonal creek in an old growth cedar forest with a few trails to enjoy the stillness and magic of the woods. There are 11 acres with a vineyard, fruit orchard, large garden, cob garden wall for lounging, fire pit at the vineyard with several picnic tables and hammocks, a big open field above the camping area, and the beautiful cedar forest. large deck off the barn for music, dinners, yoga and gathering. We consider this land sacred. We are only caretakers passing through, and honor this place and the original people of this land: The Molalla, Clackamas, and Kalapuya tribes, who were "relocated" to the Grand Ronde Reservation in the mid 1800's. Please be mindful of the energy of the forest, and all the people and animals who still reside and have come before. The forest is home to beavers, coyote, deer, raccoons, salamanders, frogs, and many bird and bug species. Our dream is to share this land with all people to create community in harmony with nature and provide a safe space We welcome, open heartedly, people of all gender identity or expression, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and artistic expression. WHEN YOU ARRIVE: Proceed down our long driveway to the bottom. Take a left at the sport court, and continue right. On your left is the woodshed with the "Calliope Farm" mural. You will see two parking spots to the left of the woodshed (Harmony Hollow parking) and two on the right (Hobbit Circle) You can unload here and grab a cart. Across from the parking, on the red barn, is the water station, and the hot tub sign up sheet. You will be walking/carting your things down to the forest where you will pass the outhouse on the left. For Harmony Hollow, after you cross the first bridge, take the path to the left and cross a second bridge and the campsite is on your right. For Hobbit Circle, cross the first bridge and walk around the pond, which will lead you to the campsite. The campsites are a short walk, (200 yards) but there is a decline, and you need to be a little hearty to walk back up the hill with your things. You will have a good amount of space and privacy for your group, but may encounter others visiting the forest as well. Enjoy a social time while respecting that some come for quiet and reflection. We provide a picnic table We wish to all work together for safety, with intelligence, common sense, and fire consciousness. OFFERINGS: We have a cedar hot tub, massage therapy, and an outdoor shower. The charge for the hot tub is $15 per person for 75 minutes of hot tub time. You can schedule the hot tub for privacy at the sign up sheet on the barn. If you would like to shower and not hot tub, the cost is $5 per shower, otherwise its included in the hot tub fee, and required for hot tub entrance. If you, or anyone in your group did not pay for a hot tub ahead of time, you will find a Venmo link on the barn, or can bring cash. HOT TUB: The hot tub sign up sheet is on the barn next to the water station. It is first come first serve. If you are a larger group using the tub, consider choosing a later spot for water displacement. If the hot tub is too hot, please add cold water from the hose to desired temp. PLEASE do not turn down the temperature on the hot tub, but use the cold water to create desired temp, but not below 102. If you are staying multiple nights and would like to hot tub again, the cost is $10 pp, instead of $15. Kids under 10 are $5 The hot tub is to the right of the house down by the garden. Your time is private, but we may need to visit/work in the garden. PLEASE read and be mindful of the hot tub etiquette posted in the hot tub area. VINEYARD: ~Silas Wines~ This is the original vineyard for Silas Wines founded in 2010. Our Pinot Noir vines are 40 year old Wadensville clone planted by the Ritter family in the early 80's. You are welcome to walk the vineyard, and explore the front of the property. Our neighbor Beth, to the west, is a master gardener, and loves to give tours of her gardens or you can wander on your own. (please inquire) Dogs: Please let us know if you will be bringing a dog. We and our neighbors have chickens that are penned and free ranged. Please DO NOT allow your dog (or yourself) to roam on our neighbors property over the fence in the next field to the East. He is very friendly, and we have a good relationship, but that is his request. Please pick up after your dog. Please do not lose site of dog, and keep them on leash in common areas. Please do not leave your dog unattended at the campsite or anywhere on the property where they will bark and disturb other guests. THE CARAVAN SPOT: Please let us know if you are needing a van camping spot opposed to tent camping in the woods. We do have a few different options for car camping, and when booking select the "caravan spot". We also can split up your group if some are tent camping and others need van camping, but you would need to book the two different sites. We look forward to hosting you and invite you to enjoy camping at Calliope Farm and the Cedar Forest. +++Our goal is to donate a portion of earnings to NAYA (The Native American Youth and Family center) and to MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women).

GeerCrest Farm was settled by the Geer family in 1848, and is still owned and stewarded by the family. The house Ralph and Mary Geer built in 1851 stands and is one of the oldest in Oregon to remain in the same family. The farm features creeks, forests, pastures, orchards and gardens as well as the historic buildings. Currently we have four friendly sheep and a small flock of Mallard ducks to keep us company. The Pioneer Memorial Orchard features over 50 vairieties of pre 1850 apple trees. The Heritage Grove has ten fruit and nut trees that were recognizeds as a memorial the the early pioneers of the nursery trade by Oregon Heritage Tree program. The 20 acre property, offers three tent camp sites Including the Tree House site, as well as two forest cabins and a small forest bunkhouse (sleeps 6). Our peaceful, small farm offers a reflective immersion in nature and history among the occasional quacking of ducks and baaas of sheep. The scenery from all corners of the farm is incredible - a favorite is the westward view of the valley pasture at sunset -- called "Homer's View" after famous political cartoonist and Geer descendant, Homer Davenport. No matter which camping site you choose, the sounds of the creek, pond frogs, or conversing owls are sure to lull you to sleep. Feel free to roam the farm, but always leave gates as you find them, open or closed. Please say hello to our sheep and barn cats (they may say hello first). Explore the Heritage Grove of historic trees, the Memorial apple orchard and pear glade with varieties circa 1840s, indulge your senses in our medicinal herb garden, and chat with our farm family while they water the veggie gardens, if you so wish! Your experience will certainly be unique to the season. Your host Jim Toler represents the fifth generation of the farm and will happily share stories of the farm and it's history. GeerCrest Farm is truly an off-the-beaten-path gem.

We stayed at Elkhorn Campsite for two nights, and it was truly an 11/10 experience. The weekend was extremely hot, and Anthony, the host, kindly offered to let us borrow his EZ-UP canopy for extra shade. Such a generous and thoughtful gesture that made a big difference. The campsite itself is very spacious, with lots of room between each site, which gave us plenty of privacy. The river is just a short 5-minute walk away, and at night, the open sky is absolutely stunning- you can see the stars so clearly! We also forgot to bring firewood, but thankfully Anthony had wood available on site, which was super convenient. Another thing worth mentioning: the porta-potties were very well maintained. Honestly, I was impressed by how clean they were. We’ve already made plans to come back. If you’re considering booking this site, do it! You won’t be disappointed.

Our family loved staying on the old golf course! The wide open space was amazing—our kids had so much room to run around and just be free. You definitely don’t get this kind of space or freedom at a typical state or county park. We camped on hole 17, just a short 5-minute walk to the river, which was shallow and perfect for the kids to splash around and even cross safely. The portable bathrooms were impressively clean—such a bonus! Anthony was a fantastic host—super helpful, friendly, and accommodating. Overall, a wonderful site and experience for our family of four. We’d absolutely come back!

My son and I had the best experience! Anthony is an incredible host. He had the perfect spot for us, he was welcoming and considerate. He checked on us several times. He gave clear directions to the river and the pond. The campsites are a good distance from other campers. It’s peaceful and we saw deer, grouse, frogs in the pond, lots of birds, even turkeys! It felt safe and the restrooms were very clean! We will definitely be back!

We were so impressed with Zen Acres and will be back! I have already recommended it to multiple people as I cannot stop talking about our stay. This was the first time taking all 3 of our kiddos camping (5, 3, & 2 yrs old). Mike was amazing to work with; quick to respond and clear with communication. I recommend checking out their website, which had great reads about the property and history. We reserved 3 of the swinging chairs from the website. These were delivered to camp, offered to be set-up, and also picked up. Easy payment through Venmo. Chairs were just a fun little extra to have at the site for the kids. Directions, the drive, and finding the site was all very clear. We were impressed with how clean it was. The kids even found hidden painted rocks around the site, not sure if that was from a past camper or ZenAcres. The kids absolutely loved finding these, the rocks were little treasures that we hope the next people can now find and enjoy! Easy walk to the creek and multiple spots to set up a big blanket and play in the water all day. The few porta-pottty’s we used through out the campground were all very clean and stocked with toilet paper. We stayed from a Wednesday-Friday. Zen Acres was absolutely perfect for us, we didn’t feel like we were right next to anybody and it was a quiet night. Site 4 was amazing to listen to the water. Thank You Mike and Team for making our first camping trip with our Littles so memorable. It was truly special!

We loved site 7 at MR. It sat right on the river, which was a wonderful swimming hole. Campsite fit one car and 3 tents pretty comfortably, and had a fire pit and picnic table. Hosts were very helpful and responsive. We booked at MR to make a trip to Mt Hood. It was a long commute (2ish hrs), but happy we stayed there.

We where absolutely shocked with how incredible this camp area was set up, the directions where clear and Mike was super responsive through messages and awesome to meet in person. The road down is all new gravel so go slow down, I'd recommend if your car is light when leaving you need to punch it to make it up the new gravel, if you go slow you'll get stuck, we watched about 8 people sink and just wreck the road. Each camp is labeled by number and a tag with your name and maps provided, multiple bathrooms and a short walk to an awesome creek, you can either go swimming or just chill and wade in. We loved that dogs where allowed off leash and ours where able to relax and play in our massive camp site. It's like being at a state park but half the price better people quiet and less busy which we loved, we felt super safe the entire time. The camp sites all have tables and rock fire pits, multiple toilets along the way the path/road outside every camp, wifi provided for emergencies by the creek. Overall it was quiet beautiful and we had everything we needed. We will 💯 be back, we loved everything about Zen Acres, I would recommend to anyone.

MORE ABOUT THE LAND: Located right off Hwy 26, directly in between the city of Portland and the peak of Mt. Hood, you'll find the most peaceful corner of the Pacific Northwest for you to pitch your tent or park your van. We are conveniently located just 6 minutes from downtown Sandy, known for its food trucks, outdoor gear shops, and the famous Joe's Donuts. Though we are right off a busy highway, we're in a valley so all you'll hear are the tranquil sounds of Cedar Creek's flowing waters and the chirping birds who live in the cedars overhead. The small clearings throughout the property provide natural privacy for our campers, while the barn provides amenities making it difficult to leave. We're so honored to share this magical place with as many people exploring the Pacific Northwest as we can. Take a dip in Cedar Creek, sit and read by one of the ponds, get your heart pumping on the hilly trails on the north side of the property, pick as many blackberries as you can find if in season. NON-NEGOTIABLE RULES: PACK IN PACK OUT: We do not have trash or recycling bins down in the creekside campground so please keep your waste contained and take it with you when you leave. Please do not throw any trash in the porta-potties. 4WD/AWD REQUIRED PAST THE BARN: The steep gravel roads can be tough for some cars and rigs (particularly on the way out) and consequently, can cause a lot of damage to our roads. So for everyone's safety, we have restricted access to only vehicles with 4WD or AWD only. Please do not message us asking us to advise on the vehicle you have. If someone in your party has a 2WD vehicle, they can park up in the entry lot and get shuttled down to the campsites in a 4WD vehicle. If we see a 2WD vehicle in the campground, we will ask you to leave and if we have to dig you out, we will charge a $200 fee. Thank you for respecting our policies and helping us maintain our space. DOG FRIENDLY: We are as dog friendly as it gets here. Unleashed dogs are allowed on this property down by the creek (on-leash required in and around the barn). If you have a fear of dogs, or have dogs that are not friendly with other people or fellow dogs, this probably isn't the right campground for you. Of course, we expect all dog owners to keep an eye on their pets so they don't disturb other campers or ingest anything they're not supposed to. QUIET HOURS: 10pm-9am. We ask that guests keep the noise (loud music and loud conversations) to a minimum between 10pm and 9am. We live onsite and will enforce these if we have to (please don't make us). NO FIREARMS, FIREWORKS OR ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE USE. This is not a late night party campsite. This property is best enjoyed in the daylight and we encourage campers who want to take full advantage of the scenery, will abide by the quiet hours, and maintain a safe space for all. OTHER INFO: CELL SERVICE: There is an AT&T tower on our property so that gets the best service by far. Verizon is pretty good. T-mobile does not get reception here. There is high-speed internet up at the barn that is accessible with a Blue Barn Pass.

Located on Mount Hood about an hour from Portland, Zigzag Mountain Farm is home to an organic garden, old homestead, house, yurts, and barn. 50 acres of open meadows and forest, bordering thousands of acres of national forest. The farm is home to an organic garden, campfire circle, picnic area, a city bus with a campers' kitchen, outdoor seating area with BBQ, kids play structure and hiking trails. The cabin on the property was built by the original homesteaders. Britta and Jim purchased the property in 2009. It had been vacant for a number of years. Giant slash piles scattered the land from previous logging. The house and cabin were not livable and needed major renovations. In 2019, we purchased and brought in a city bus and converted it to a campers kitchen. A year-round creek flows through the property and 3 major rivers are nearby. The Zigzag Mountain Lookout Trail leaves from the property. The property was homesteaded in the early 1900's. E. Mountain Drive was the wagon train trail into Portland, known as the Barlow Trail. Zigzag Mountain Farm offers the perfect escape from the city.

From there, we started raising Black Angus in 2008 after spending four years cleaning up the fields to make it safe for animals. It started as nothing more than a gravel road leading to a small clearing with an old bus and a couple decks. Part of our retirement planning is to spend next several years developing the lower portion of the property (approx. 15 acres) into a campground and retreat for our guests, as well as our own family, friends, and grandchildren. If your looking to jaunt from camp a little further, we are located a little over an hour and a beautiful drive to the Pacific Coast and about an hour from Portland. Although in the middle of the country woods, we are surprisingly only two and a half miles from the adorable and quaint town of Carlton. So beside the views, you’ll be alongside some fantastic eateries and outstanding winemakers.  Being raised in the community, and over ten years of experience in the local food and wine industry, I can give recommendations aplenty.   ꕥ  The property has been in our family since the late 60’s and has recently been transferred in ownership to the next generation! It’s been a large adjustment with many precious memories in tow. In hopes to carry on the legacy we opened up camp mid-summer 2021, and it’s a work in progress (as work normally is!), but has been a beautiful experience being in a position to share. There are two family homes on the property with people who truly admire this land we have been given so we do ask you to respect our process in this adjustment, as we miss our grandparents and parents who have worked their entire lives for us to be here. With the work of these past couple seasons, and thanks to our fellow campers, we have been able to lay more gravel, get a more fluid bathroom situation established, and have purchased a 20ft stargazing tent that is in the works of being listed this season! Camping in Silver Falls State Park guide

About

Set in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, Silver Falls State Park is the crown jewel of the Oregon state park system thanks to its waterfalls, all of which are easily accessible via the 7.2-mile Trail of Ten Falls or several shorter hikes. Add more than 9,000 acres of temperate and old-growth rainforest and miles of backcountry trails, and you’ll want to spend a few days here. With RV spots, cabins, tent camping sites, group sites, and a horse campground, the small Silver Falls Campground allows campers and equestrians to stay overnight and explore. Several day-use areas also offer picnic areas, horseshoe pits, playgrounds, and a swimming hole.

Notable Camping Spots

  • Best for tent campers: Loop A offers 43 tent sites with water nearby and 10 standard RV sites.
  • Best for large RVs: Loop B offers 38 standard RV spots and can accommodate rigs up to 83 feet.
  • Best for privacy: Fourteen rustic cabins offer beds, heat, and electricity. Cabins 8, 9, and 10 are especially set apart.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Book in advance if you plan to visit during the busy summer period, especially over weekends. Sites can be reserved online or by phone up to 30 days in advance.
  2. A very limited number of first-come, first-served sites (B35-43) are sometimes available. Check before showing up at the park to avoid disappointment.
  3. For the best chance at an uncrowded campground, visit in winter. Tent sites are closed, but electric sites and cabins are open year-round.

When to go

Although summer is the most popular time to visit Silver Falls, spring is actually the best time to see the waterfalls at their fullest. The falls have the lowest flow in summer, and some especially dry years see fewer than the usual 10 waterfalls. Guided horseback trail rides are available from Memorial Day to Labor Day. While some camping is still possible in the winter, not all facilities are available.

Know before you go

  • Limited supplies are available in the park, though ice and wood usually are at the campground. Pick up groceries and other supplies in Silverton, Sublimity, or Salem.
  • The Trail of Ten Falls is steep in some areas with unpaved sections. It’s not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. 
  • No pets, bicycles, skateboards, or in-line skates are permitted on the Canyon Trail portion of the Trail of Ten Falls.
  • Two campsites, four cabins, and campground restrooms and showers are accessible to wheelchair users. 
  • All standard campsites and four of the cabins are pet-friendly. Be aware of bears and cougars in more remote areas of the park.

Silver Falls Campground
This is probably the hardest place in Oregon to get camping reservations. And don't get me wrong, it's nice, but it's not THAT much nicer than other places. It does have the Ten Falls Trail to meander upon, and a dramatic waterfall view you can walk under. But other than that, it's a lot like other state parks - Milo McIver also has great hikes, and so does Champoeg. The campground itself is very similar to those other parks too - the exact same kind of template was used. Is it worth visiting? Sure. Does it deserve the status as the hardest to get reservations at? I'm not so sure. I actually like Richardson Park campground better run by Lane County on the Fern Ridge Reservoir. Bigger, greener campsites and access to a huge, gorgeous lake with fishing, and of course Eugene at your fingertips. But hey, this is good too. If you do go, hit Pacific Honeybee in Mount Angel, and the Oregon Garden. The honey is great, and so is the garden.

Silver Falls Campground
These are some of the most underrated falls in Oregon. The campsite is lovely and even has a clean bathroom with a shower and the option to buy firewood. Highly recommend.

Great go to campground that is very kids/family friendly. Easy trails for kids or the elderly. Also don't forget your bike! This State Park has trails for riding your bike.
