Redwood Mountain Retreat

8 sites · Lodging, RVs, Tents5 acres · Scotts Valley, CA
This location is a private home, turned retreat center in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We are cradled by Mother Nature, in the middle of a Redwood forest, with fresh air and California sun, work together to create an environment that will insulate you from the chaos of today’s hectic lifestyles. Besides camping or overnight stays, we offer retreats to soothe your weary soul. The rooms for rent are part of the home, where I live. We will be sharing space. I have two dogs that live on the property - a British Labrador and a Goldendoodle. Please do not book if you don't like dogs. They are the sweetest dogs you'll meet. They serve to exuberantly welcome you, as well as guard, protect and warn me about unruly UPS drivers and the very scary turkeys that roam the mountains. This property is proudly woman-owned and operated. I love hosting women travelers and have built my tent sites, rooms, cabins, retreats and experiences to cater to women. That is to say, women want a little more comfort, a little more care, a little more thoughtfulness and little more bougie. If that's what you're looking for, this is it! Of course I welcome men too. In fact, there are quite a few men’s’ retreats hosted here. All will be comforted with the smells of the redwoods outside and the smells of fresh baked bread, inside. Come and join me for a night in the woods. Welcome to your Redwood Mountain Retreat, ~Daisy

Like I said, we do not like to waste anything, so you may notice a few parts and pieces laying around.

For over 40 years, Sacred Earth has been cherished by many as an example of sustainable off-grid living immersed in nature. The land is home to the headwaters of Love Creek, with springs to be found in fern gullies and gentle babbling brooks. The breathtaking ridgetop has expansive views down the San Lorenzo Valley southeast and westerly views to Ben Lomond Mountain, the final hill between this place and the Pacific. Hiking trails (open in dry season only) encircle the land and allow for moderate walks throughout its mostly vertical terrain. The best camping near Fremont Peak State Park guide

Overview

About

Astonishing, expansive views of Monterey Bay, the Santa Lucia Mountains, the Salinas Valley, the San Benito Valley—just wow.

You can drive the 11 miles from the Mission San Juan Bautista. From there, the hike isn't too tough to reach the summit. (But watch out for broken rocks during the final rock scramble.) Don't rush it—You're going to want some time to sit and take it all in.

Come back at night, since this California state park hosts the Fremont Peak Observatory. A 30-inch telescope is open to the public for special programs on certain nights (check first). Or bring your own telescope and gather round to view the heavens.

This mountaintop park also has camping and picnic facilities. You can choose from 25 campsites (we like the view from #8 the best). Be warned, though—the facilities are, well, let's call them rustic. This is a prime park to visit if you're looking for peace and quiet—Try to arrive during the daytime so your headlights don't disturb stargazers.

Notable campgrounds

  • Family Campsites: Ideal for a cozy family retreat amid the park's natural beauty.
  • Group Campsites: Perfect for larger gatherings seeking a communal outdoor experience.
  • Environmental Campsites: Connect with nature at these minimal-impact sites.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • Book six months in advance to secure your preferred dates.
  • Be flexible with your travel dates to increase your chances of finding availability.
  • Check the park's reservation system regularly for cancellations.
  • Explore nearby camping options for alternative accommodations if the park is full.

When to go

The best time to visit Fremont Peak State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural scenery is at its peak. Summer offers clear skies for astronomy enthusiasts, though it can be warm. Winters are cooler and quieter, ideal for those seeking solitude.

Know before you go

  • Day use hours are from 8am to 30 minutes after sunset, offering ample time for exploration.
  • Bring your own wood for campfires; collecting natural materials is prohibited.
  • While dogs are welcome, they are not allowed on trails, ensuring wildlife protection.
  • Layered clothing is recommended due to changeable weather conditions.
  • Vehicle headlights after sunset can disrupt night vision, so arrive before dusk for astronomical programs.
