The original owner, of this property, Varisto,  was a happy go lucky bootlegger back in the day, that welcomed many to try his brew and listen to a song or two on the accordion.  He's good neighbor, a famous cowboy artist, Jack Swanson, and he used to have fun fishing out of the river, and sharing a glass or two.  One day as Jack was herding his cattle through the area, past Princess Camp, located across the street, he spend a little too long here at Star Route, and to his surprise, the cattle had made their way into Princess Camp startling a few campers outside their airstreams. The Esselen Indians settled just up the road at the Cachagua Community Park back in the 1800's right by the Carmel River, which has an old stone house above the river, and many places to sit and reflect.

Quail Nest at Star Route
The property has charm and there was a scenic, mountainous drive to get there. The owner was friendly and greeted me upon arrival, and took care to make it a good experience. There was a nice dog and chickens, and I woke up to a rooster crowing. The outpost with shower was nice. My feedback is that there could be more information on this site on what to expect, so I hope by sharing here others will go more prepared than I did. 1.) With the more remote location, bring all food supplies with you… you may not want to drive back out. There is a grill and a refrigerator. 2.) BRING BEDDING! I received a text when I was already on my way that I needed to bring my own or a sleeping bag. The tent has a Queen AIR MATTRESS with no sheets or blankets. I have stayed in a Hipcamp for a similar rate that had a more furnishing. 3.) There’s a gas-powered heater for the tent, which I did not use (mix of concern and user error)… so without that and no bedding it does get cold at night.

Quail Nest at Star Route
We loved our stay at Quail Nest! First time hipcamper here, so I wasn't expecting much but I'd say it's a true definition of glamping. Outhouse bathroom and shower was perfect, the tent was cool and had a heater we used for a bit before bed. We were delayed on arrival but Jeff's directions were super helpful and clear. It was such a charming spot, great vibes. Rustic with interesting decor. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to say hi to Jeff but we met a nice, welcoming neighbor. Loved the sounds of the animals in the morning and we were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of Ruby 🐕. I did take a picture of the printout on basic rules/info about the area as it had facts about the tribe that id like to learn more about. Great star gazing spot. Would love to book again if I'm ever in the area and have more time to explore the grounds. Thank you again, Jeff!

i stayed here 5 nights and absolutely loved my stay. Jeff was a great host and the property is so beautiful and peaceful and makes such a great little retreat away. I worked remotely during my stay and the wifi worked super well to attend zoom calls. there were lots of different places to sit and relax. the bathroom was shared with one other person staying on the property. there is a separate grill and picnic table by the tent

Unique, beautiful place
The location is beautiful and the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was also clean and nice. The only downside was the occasional, late night noise from the neighbors' dogs and trucks. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our stay and are glad we explored the area.

Quail Nest was even better than we imagined! We came super late and Jeff's super clear directions helped get us there smoothly and safely even in the dark with no service! Everything was super clean and laid out beautifully. When we woke up we were on a magical property filled with charm. Jeff and his wife Rose were so kind and welcoming. It's absolutely wonderful and having welcoming hosts makes it that much more comfortable! Would have loved to stay longer... next time!

What a GEM! Can’t wait to go back!
What can I say that hasn’t already been said? Jeff greets you with warmth and patience. I could listen to his calling voice for hours. A genuinely great gentleman. And what a perfect place to stay: has Wi-Fi, hot water and strong shower, heat even if you’re ‘roughing it’ in the ‘tent’. (Don’t forget to turn on the heater before you nod off!) Fridge and a big seating area available too. The ‘outhouse’ was clean and roomy. Parking super easy. From waking to the rooster in the morning to the incredible starry sky at night. I’ve never felt so in sync with Mother Nature, and yet it took very little time to get to Monterey when necessary, on one of the most scenic and enjoyable roads I’ve driven in my lifetime. I don’t usually go to the same place twice, but I’m already looking forward to planning another trip next year. And to spending more time on the property and in the surrounding area.

Jeff has a great set up. He was super patient when I had car problems and helped with directions too. There is a Picnic table next to the tent, grill for cooking, full bathroom within a short walk from the tent cabin. Comfortable bed in the tent as well as a fan and heat. Lots of interesting artistic touches too around the property. There's a swimming hole nearby. Be prepared for a very twisty narrow road to get there.

Jeff the host at Quail Nest was very attentive and helpful. The first night my air mattress kept deflating, the next day he went out and bought a new one and the second night was great, he also refunded my first night, much appreciated. The amenities are great. The location was a bit far for my purposes I was visiting Big Sur, but if you’re doing activities in Monterey or Carmel Valley. It’s a great location.

Our stay at the quails nest was a 10 out of 10! Jeff and Rose couldn’t have been more welcoming and accommodating. From the moment we arrived we were treated and felt like family! They had great suggestions on stuff nearby and were knowledgeable about Monterrey and Caramel. They generously gave us veggies from their garden and offered things we may have forgotten. The stars are a sight at night! We hope to make it back to Quails Nest in the future!

Beautiful little oasis!
Jeff's property was far more beautiful than it looked even in the pictures, and we were so grateful to stay there. It's nestled into a beautiful little area in the heart of the Carmel Valley, and was so peaceful – we even got to meet some super friendly other guests. The private bathroom was clean and lovely, we had our own grill, and the outdoor seating area was so cozy and welcoming. Our tent and air mattress were basic, but exactly what we expected! Agree with some other reviewers that the drive in can be a little intense, and we would definitely recommend doing it in the light of day the first time. We loved our stay with Jeff and would absolutely recommend and return. Thanks for having us!

Everything was exactly as pictured. Really beautiful property! Didn't spend much time at the property aside from winding down and sleeping so didn't get to explore the property very much. Only con would be that that there were bugs inside the tent/on the air mattress despite zipping everything up which I didn't expect/was not ideal while sleeping. Lots of activity from animals at night and constantly hearing footsteps around the tent when there was no one there. Bathroom was awesome and fridge was a huge plus. Probs wouldn't go back but would recommend for anyone who is going to get the most out of the rest of the property as it seems like it has a lot to offer!

We found Jeff’s place right before a hike in Big Sur and needed a place to crash after. What a perfect spot, super cute yard and set up. Bathroom and everything was very clean and tidy. Ruby, the dog, was the cutest! Would definitely stay here again.

This is an amazing hipcamp. The tent is wonderful and there are lots of nice spaces on the property to hangout. The property is also walking distance from numerous attractions (such as local swimming holes and a park) and a short(ish) drive from Big Sur/Carmel Valley

Glamping
Our glamping experience was unbelievable. We came to this location after backpacking in Big Sur. Jeff and Rose were very knowledgeable of the area and were great hosts. They even helped us out with cast iron to cook our leftover steak and potato smash (from Nepenthe in lieu of using our backpacking stove & pot) and also gave us fresh eggs from the farm. Got to hold a baby goat from the nice neighbor. The propane heater inside of the tent helped out with the late night chill that occurred prior to bed. The accommodations exceeded our expectations.

Wonderful place for your spirit
I really enjoyed talking with Jeff about Cachagua and local history and seeing and hearing so many different birds on the property. The quail nest was comfortable and perfect to sleep with our sleeping bags. Light sleepers (not me) will want to bring earplugs if they want to sleep in because the friendly goats next door and doves wake up around sunrise. Stars were beautiful at night. Glad I could visit with my son.

Glamping next to a goat farm
Jeff and Rose were so friendly and accommodating! They gave us a tour of their property upon arrival, which included goat snuggles with the neighboring baby goats. The property was serene, a great sanctuary with a grill, fridge, communal spaces, and clean bathroom. The directions to the location were concise, and the drive there is beautiful. I highly recommend this spot for a relaxing retreat.

Camping with amenities
Jeff was a great host, helped give a quick tour of the site when we arrived and refilled the propane tank for the tent heater a few days in (super helpful when lows were in the 30’s). Private bathroom was excellent, flushing toilet and hot showers, shampoo/conditioner, body wash etc. Outdoor sink was super handy and the propane grill allowed for some delicious steaks our first night. Picnic table was close to the tent and there’s a open air barn with a fridge and some sitting areas. There were some string lights which helped with night time visibility. Canvas tent was spacious and there’s an air bed available but we bring our own sleeping mat everywhere since we prefer a more stable sleeping surface. Had some rain our last night but inside of the tent was nice and dry. They have a super sweet dog named Ruby that we loved playing with. You are outdoors so if you’re a light sleeper, bring some ear plugs for the roosters etc. All in all a really nice camp site with lots of amenities. It is about a 45min drive to more popular Carmel/Monterey sites but we just treated it like a day trip. Would definitely recommend this to others!
