Hollywood celebrities steal most of Malibu's spotlight. But beneath the glitz, this scenic stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway is a camper's paradise. Just north of Los Angeles, Malibu wows visitors with its trove of California state parks. Wild beaches, hidden coves, and coastal canyons set against the Santa Monica Mountains are begging to be explored. Want to hit the trails? Malibu Creek State Park is a favorite mountain hideaway just minutes from Santa Monica. Outdoor enthusiasts from across Los Angeles flock here for the hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing. In the campground, you can sleep under the shade of sycamore trees. Just check for closures before you go—this arid region is prone to wildfires. Just up the coast, Leo Carillo State Park offers up unspoiled beaches and hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains. Pull up at the popular campground (booking early is a must). Once you're settled in, get stoked about surfing, fishing, and exploring tide pools and sea caves. For even bigger Malibu adventures (literally), head to Point Mugu State Park. With a whopping 14,000 acres, this secluded park boasts sweeping views and 60 miles of hiking trails. It also has two campgrounds—Sycamore Canyon Thornhill Broome. From base camp, get lost in river canyons and rocky bluffs. You might even spot migrating whales in the spring. Wherever you look, Malibu, CA is teeming with wildlife and striking landscapes. Any season is a great time for camping—or glamping. Cottages, bungalows, and private islands let you camp like a celebrity. This is Malibu, after all!
