Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space.
Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life.
All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky.
We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays. We also don't offer longterm rentals as we focus on short term camping.

26 Minutes upriver of Claytor Lake State Park. There is a zoo in nearby Ft. Chiswell.
Each site has full hook ups. No tents are allowed due to lack of toilet facilities.

About the property
Located on a 66-acre plot just five miles from the Shenandoah River, our property offers amazing access to hiking and the outdoors while also keeping civilization within striking distance. Bear Chase Brewery is just a half mile walk across the street, and we are 15 miles from Purcellville.
The land and lodge used to be the summer home of a trained opera singer, whose singing could be heard throughout the mountain.
Your Host lives onsite in the stone house that also acts as a hostel for hikers on the Appalachian Trail. Built in the 1930's all from locally sourced hand-hammered stone, the house is open every night from 5pm - 9pm.
Note that we offer several campsites relatively close to each other, so you should expect to see and hear other campers on the property during your stay.
About the listing
Pitch your tent in a forested area just a short walk up from where you’ll park your car. Enjoy unbeatable proximity to hiking and panoramic views while still having basic amenities that ensure a comfortable stay.
You’ll have access to a composting pit toilet, and can access potable water from the tap in the lodge. That’s also where you can access hot showers. As noted above, we host Appalachian Trail thru hikers on the property, so you may see them hanging around or sleeping in the bunkhouse near the shared facilities. so please be respectful of hours when you come in for a shower.

We are AUTISM Friendly 💙,so if you have a camper that needs a little more encouragement about camping or other accommodations please let your host know. You are welcomed to bring your furry family members, bikes and kayaks. There is no swimming in the pond. It was built for fishing so it’s not safe to swim due to structures under the water for the fish.
We are only 30 minutes from Carter’s Mountain, Monticello and Jefferson Winery’s. Thistle Gate Winery is only 5 minutes away and 20 minutes to Scottsville were you can enjoy the James River. UVA sports complex is only 30 minutes away and you’re able to go the back way in to skip the gridlock of the traffic.

is 6 feet or higher at Scottsville. At 7.5 - 8 feet, there is not much beach to play on and the river is too dangerous to navigate. You can drive in and camp, but please stay clear of all water activities, including fishing, in these dangerous conditions.

Voted Top VA site! See Reviews. Pastimes on Passage Creek Ranch is conveniently located at the north end of Fort Valley. The recreational draw to this area is hard to beat in VA, and this property has it all for an amazing outdoor weekend! The ranch comprises 40 acres of lowland acreage designated for the camp, including a 5-acre lake.
The Cedar Grove sites 1, 2, and 3 are along the banks of Passage Creek located within a sparse, groomed Cedar grove. They are all a short walk (or drive) to the lake and beach amenities. Each site has varying access to the creek, so check out the site details. These sites are extra large and can accommodate multiple family groups, as well as, travel trailers of all sizes up to off-road motorcoaches in site 1. There are no hookups, so just boondocking. Pack it in, Pack it out. Generators are allowed but please be aware of the other sites and direct the noise away.
The Lakeside Mountain Stream site is very secluded, nestled between the mountains and the lake. It overlooks our 5-acre lake with mountain views in the background. It's on the opposite side of the lake from the Cedar Sites. This site has its own dock and is just a short walk down a mowed trail to a beautiful section of Passage Creek. An additional seasonal mountain stream can cascade behind the site and run under it to feed the lake when the conditions are right. It's a delicate site, so the accommodations and group size is strictly limited.

Locally, the North end of Fort Valley offers many great hiking trails, trout fishing, rock climbing, horseback riding, and the Elizabeth Furnace day-use park. Taskers Gap OHV/ATV park is a short drive south, and the valley is sandwiched between both forks of the Shenandoah River for those looking to paddle.

We have 7+ very private acres along the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, which has been in our family for over 50 years and where we currently live.
You will arrive at our house, and the campsite is approximately 150 yds down the river trail. The campsite is completely private from our house.
We are native plant enthusiasts and are fortunate to have many native species of trees and plants on our property. There’s great fishing, hiking, kayaking and canoeing from the property and also plenty more nearby.
We’re only a few miles outside of Strasburg which offers great antique shops, dining, and a brewery with live music on weekends.
Five night maximum permitted. We prefer that guests arrive before dark.
**Note that the North Fork is a shallow river with a slate bottom. If you plan to wade, fish or swim in the river, you may want to bring some sturdy shoes to wear in the river.

We loved our stay at the private pavilion! We opted to use it as our shelter, so we could easily keep our dogs enclosed. All the animals are friendly, the lakeside is beautiful, our fresh eggs were delicious. Friendly & welcoming host, although I felt terrible my dogs barked at him every time he tried to come by to say hello. We’d definitely love to stay again!

I been to so many camping sites within two years. This is the best one, I have ever seen! I love it and enjoy it. I choose lake site 2. It has a beautiful lake view that I can enjoy during daytimes. I really want to stay here for a week. The host is here very nice. He provided free kayaks and life jackets for us. I definitely will come back again with my team, and will tell everyone I know, and let them come here!

We stayed at the campsite with a little water front you could walk right to, the lily pads were really pretty and kayaking in the campsite provided kayaks early morning was so much fun for my daughter and I. It was well shaded and just down the hill from the half bath with sink to use.
If you are an animal lover then the goats, and many chickens that come to hang out at the campsite are going to be your favorite too. My daughter loved the baby goats and even carried one of the chickens around most of the time. 😂

Cozy little campground next to some great trails and convenient parking. The four sites are close together so you can be as social (or not) with your neighbors as you'd like. The first bucket of firewood is free and lasts 2-3 hours with a standard fire - extra buckets are 9 dollars each.

Apple Maps had me turn too early – keep driving until you see the yellow signs Jim has placed by the road. You can’t miss them so keep going.
I enjoyed a two-night stay at Jim’s place. It was clean, quiet, and the views were great. The spots are a little close but set up in a way that you still have privacy – each space is very spacious. This would be a great place to come with two other groups, especially if you can get spots 1-3. I stayed in spot 3 and it was set up perfectly. I did have to level out the RV about 6” in the back which was not a problem. Jim was very accommodating but not intrusive, super nice guy. Power hook up was seamless. If you use an external water filter at the water source, you will need a small hose section because the spigot is very close to the ground. I thought I read that the sewer was for grey water only, so I did not empty our black water tank (which we don’t use for #2’s – we bag those). The picnic table and fire ring were located in the perfect spot.
AT&T cell service is 1-2 bars. Always had connection.
Access to the New River Trail is at the end of the road, about a 10-minute walk. I walked east (did not bring my bike but will next time) about 6.5 miles and crossed two bridges and passed through Allisonia. Nice and flat. The surface of the trail is packed and would accommodate road tires, but I wouldn’t ride it with anything less than hybrids. I did have trouble finding a good map of the trail, so I posted one I picked up at

While the property is beautiful overall and peaceful and I would recommend it, I'd keep a few things in mind.
1) There are streetlights across the property which definitely hindered our night sky viewing opportunities. It did make walking to the permanent portapotties easy without a flashlight though. Not crazy bright by city standards at all, it was still dark, just not quite what we were expecting for a stargazing opportunity.
2) The "make your own" site was exciting in terms of picking the best spot for our needs, but I could see it being crowded/a hassle on a weekend or busier night.
3) As some others had mentioned, we did not find the flush toilets/showers. It is not located in the main camping area, but appeared to be either a walk down a main road with no sidewalks or a short drive. We peeked around an area that a single sign seemed to point towards but it was so poorly labeled that we decided to turn back in case we were accidentally tresspassing. The outhouse building served us fine for one night--though do mind the spiders!

Waterfront camping at it's best! Sunrise on one side of the camper, sunset on the other side. Panoramic view of natural waterfront out the windshield, working waterfront to the rear. With a welcoming and informative host, what's not to like. We just met Rod and I feel like I've known him for years. We are definitely planning on returning to this one!

I’m a new camper, but I can’t imagine anywhere better than this. The sound of the river the campsite was large totally private. Well equipped. Took a bath in the river watch the Hawks fly overhead and the trains at night to me were out of a dream just special. Everything was perfect.

I love this place so much, I hesitate to tell my friends about it because it’s so special to my family. We’ve become the kind of people that say things like, “We can’t wait for our summer trip to the lake!” I’m not assuming of it at all. This property popped up on Zillow tomorrow. I don’t sell my first born just to make it happen. The host is always amazing and amenities always get better each year.! We look forward to spending time beside the lake again soon.
