The Lost Dutchman Italian Bar Camp is a 160 acres of Priviately Owned Patented Mining land and our priviate campground located in the Stanislaus National Forest and on the South Fork of the Stanislaus River, which runs through the camp.
Camping is available on both side of the river making the Italian Bar camp a destination for campers since we rebuilt the camp from the ground up in the late 1970’s.
Whether you want to relax in your campsite listening to the river, dip your toes in the cool waters or try your hand at panning for gold, I-Bar offers all of this and more. There are miles of hiking opportunities around the camp as well, from short river hikes to Trailblazing like the Miners of old. Little History:
The property was discovered and first settled around 1849 as a gold rush mining camp. At one time over 3,000 people lived here and mined for gold. When the gold rush came to an end so did Italian Bar. Until over a hundred years later, In 1976 when our founder fell in love with this remote property and purchased the land and we began rebuilding the I-Bar camp from the ground up and opened it to our members. It didn't hurt that somewhere close by Our founder found a 800oz pocket of gold. Even today, Prospecting for gold is encouraged!
If you want to try your hand at “Gettin on some of the shiny” let the Caretakers know! We have a few gold pans we loan out that are just waiting for some color to make you smile.
Of course we have pans for sale.
If you’re an avid outdoors person, carrying a gold pan with you just makes sense.

The night skies above Finnon Lake will reveal stars unseen in California. Enjoy searching for bullfrogs, and watch the flock of Canadian Geese fly in right at sunset as the horizon blends into the watercolor sky.
This private lake supports the Mosquito Fire Protection District's fire protection efforts and the firefighters of this community. Community volunteers manage the lake for the residents and the Fire Station.
The primary funding source for the Finnon Lake Restoration is the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, which was signed into law in 2004 with a mission to support “efforts that improve the environmental, economic and social well-being of the Sierra Nevada Region, its communities and the residents of California,” according to its Website. Finnon Lake is also home to a popular 27-hole disc golf course and Mosquito’s only restaurant, Smoke on the Water Diner, which is open on weekends only. 530-622-1060.

The Soup is down the driveway a couple hundred yards from where we usually are so you’ll more or less be on your own, depending on if we have work to do down there or if there are other campers. The 2nd area is “1 Pine” accessed by our second driveway that is 100 yards down the road from the farm. The driveway is kind of rough but definitely manageable with a truck, SUV or sedan if you’re willing to go for it. The drive goes up a couple hundred yards to the hilltop where there is a clearing and, you guessed it, 1 pine tree. From the back of the clearing there is a trail that leads you to 2 Pine, which is a walk that takes just a few minutes. 2 Pine is walk-in only but has great views of the sunset and is totally secluded and private and would be a good spot to either bring some friends for a little sunset party or for someone who wants to seriously unplug. There are plenty of flat spots to pitch a tent.

Car and RV campers are welcomed and there is plenty of car/RV parking on the asphalt lot outside the fence at the East Side of the property near the mailboxes at the intersection of Rte 4 and Brice Station Road. Our grassy lawn tent area is inaccessible to vehicles and RVs. Our parking area is adjacent to the highway and may not be what rooftop and van/rv campers are expecting in terms of a peaceful camping experience. If you have tent, it’s recommended to camp out on the lawn. We have tents for rent if you need one.

We are happy to make suggestions for local hiking areas, like the Devil's Slide "Gorge" only a 15 minute drive but like a trip to mini Yosemite. The Caldor Fire was VERY close to our property and a back burn was initiated nearby the our house (literally 200' away!). Our property became a pivotal point of fighting the fire in our community known as the “Ant Hill Army”. Ask us about the story!

We accept reservations for wine and cider tastings and typically host guests between the hours of 11 am and 5 pm.
Occasionally, during very hot and busy holiday weekends, we will host an evening tasting.
We have running water on the side of the winery building.
Please note, we are a mom and pop shop with just two of us and our young son running the show. We live on site in a tiny house and use the tasting area as our 'back yard' during off hours. We ask that guests please respect our area and off hours requests. We do not permit live fires or generators.

We had an amazing time staying on Aaron’s property! We staying in one of the RV/tent spots for two nights and did a wine tasting and tour with Aaron of his vineyard. His property is absolutely stunning and the camping and wine and services are very reasonably priced! Would definitely stay again!
Keep in mind that the campsites are located right next to each other so it is very easy to hear everyone around you. Would recommend wearing clothes toed shoes and long pants for a tour for the long grass and thistle.

We came to the area for a wedding, visit Lake Tahoe, and just rest from our busy lives. Aaron’s winery was the perfect place for us: rustic and relaxed, with gorgeous sunsets, woodpeckers, and a refreshing breeze under the holm oaks.
Instructions to get here were good, and Aaron met us upon arrival. We set up our trailer, had dinner, and we had some of his wine while watching the sunset. The wine was crisp and very refreshing, and Aaron’s stories great entertainment. I also love the bottle art labels with their stories.
We had a tasting the next day, and this too was delicious and entertaining, with a surprising Zinfandel! My favorite though were the Viognier and the Rosé du Cidre!
People came and went over the weekend, but we had the place to ourselves on Tuesday. It was a perfect relaxing end to our CA trip after hiking at Lake Tahoe on Monday.
We really should have tried the coffee but forgot about this option!
Aaron was a great host, around and responsive, with recommendations for the area as well. The porta potties were clean. Oh, and if you see a huge German shepherd, it appears to be the neighbors’ dog and he is completely harmless.

My wife, our dog and I had a great time. Julie met with us when we arrived and made us feel very welcome. This a secluded site and they have done a great job decorating it. There is a winery and restaurants minutes away. We will be back

It felt like you were in your own little oasis. Very private and quiet, especially during the Memorial Holiday! Saw a few deer and one decided to hang out in our campsite for a few hours. I highly recommend Squirrel Rock Campground and Julie was an awesome host!

This place is really incredible. I hope you like wine, because the wine tasting experience is out of this world! The wine itself is tremendous, and the sunset views are stunning. There is a beautiful river and lake nearby…so much nature to explore. But what really sets this place apart is the host. Aaron is so welcoming and kind and helpful. In fact, when I couldn’t get my trailer to hitch he literally lifted it up with his own hands and helped me and was so patient. There are only a few sites and they are a little close together, but it doesn’t feel crowded because of the welcoming environment that Aaron has created. There is also plenty of foliage around so you don’t feel like you’re right on top of one another like you might at a state park. I wholeheartedly recommend this camp.

We really enjoyed this campground. It was very unique, private and yet close to town. We would highly recommend it to all!!! Our family was able to camp right beside us and all the grandkids enjoyed the box of games and exploring, we also played horseshoes and watched the abundent wildlife in this natural setting. 10 Stars from all of us!!!

We had the best time camping here with family. It is so unique and so beautiful. Very private! We enjoyed watching all the animals and even had a deer come through the camp. We would highly recommend squirrel rock campground. We enjoyed playing horseshoes and hide and seek with the grandkids!

Beautiful view of the vineyard and surrounding hills. Aaron was so gracious and gave us a free tasting and told about his wine philosophy and practices. (We bought two bottles). We loved the wine and laid back atmosphere. We were the only ones there and felt completely safe because there is a gate to the property. Aaron gave us the code so we could come and go as we wanted.

We’re nuts about it! What a great place to stay! Easy access and parking. Beautifully landscaped and so interesting. Julie was so welcoming and communication was wonderful. Exactly as described…actually…better! Goes above and beyond for a campground….Games, campfire, covered picnic area, horseshoe pits, clean gravel, no dirt…the list of all the little touches goes on! Very private. We would stay again!

We absolutely LOVED staying here. It was our own little paradise! Julie was so welcoming and kind and we felt right at home here. The outdoor grill and fire pit was such a wonderful addition as well as the games! I cannot recommend this place enough and we can’t wait to come back one day and explore the town more.
