Timber Ridge Redwood Ranch
2 sites · Lodging25 acres · Aptos, CASanta Cruz County is a magical place. The origins of the counter culture in the sixties, the majestic redwoods, a legacy of generations of farming and caring for the land. We are at 880 foot elevation three miles inland from Monterey Bay nestled in the redwoods and oaks. Above the fog line for most of the year, the climate is perfect for growing the many fruits and vegetables. Our roots at Timber Ridge run deep. Born and raised on this mountain a quarter mile from the farm, our family protected and has been nurtured by this land. This legacy is passed on to you with every breath of the Santa Cruz Mountain air. Judy moved onto the land in 1979 and grew produce here for 34 years. She planted seventy five Meyer lemon trees that continue to produce the best lemons. She left us the land when she passed in 2014, and we are passionate about continuing her legacy of natural farming and care for the earth. The enlightened consciousness and concern for health and purity in Santa Cruz County began on September 27th, 1965 when Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters held their first Acid Test in Soquel, a few miles from our farm. Jerry Garcia and the Warlocks were there, a week before they became the Grateful Dead. Jerry continued to play in Santa Cruz County, doing many gigs here, including at the Town and Country in Ben Lomond on July 12, 1972 with Tom Fogarty and Merle Saunders (admission $2.50). Our farm shares the same fertile soil found in Watsonville, famous for strawberries; Castroville, famous for artichokes; and Steinbeck country in the Salinas Valley, famous for produce of all kinds. We have created a living soil for our grow, 100% natural and organic using on the finest natural amendments available. 4.6 miles (approx. 17 min drive) to Seacliff State Beach. 12.5 miles (approx. 30 min drive) from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. 38.7 miles (approx. 1 hour drive) from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. -From our family to yours, only the best!

the Artist Ranch at Rebel Ridge
2 sites · Lodging4 acres · Pescadero, CAA mysterious parcel. Reputedly home to an art school that went by the name 'the Art Ranch of Pescadero in the 60' (Imagine all the weed that was smoked here). All that remained was a few stories and the dorms. The Dorms were highly dilapidated when we arrived but we have been clearing them out and making them shine, at least, so far. Two of the dorm rooms are ready for guests, the other two....well, maybe a hobo, but those will be made into something as well, by and by. The overall state of the property when we arrived was choked with coyote brush, poison oak, and berry bushes, the dorms were left completely open to elements and wildlife, and bees, bats, and rats had the run of the place for the better part of 40 years. Little by little we are restoring its dignity, while retaining the soul of the place. If anyone who has artistic talent were to stay, we would love for you to bestow some mark of your passing through, if the thought struck you. Please also understand we have boards, hoses, building materials and salvaged items sometimes with no place to go, dont be surprised to see three wood burning stoves in the back yard, a couple tools, and some burls or boards laying about. We live off grid and independently so we are always repairing our things or maintaining or you name it, so setting the expectation.

Hartley Farms Organic Orchard
1 site · Lodging, RV, Tent37 acres · San Miguel, CABarbara & Dan bought these 37 acres in 2005. It had no improvements. The only thing it had going for it was a 200-year-old oak tree, and its location in the heart of wine country. We would come up and camp under the tree, and plant. In 2007, we drilled a well. In 2008, Dan proposed under the tree, and we brought in power. We have continued to make improvements since. We built a little house, then we built a big house, we added farm animals, kids, fruit trees, a jam line, a pond, and more keep coming! So come up and enjoy the farm like we did in the good old days! See you at the Farm!Pitch your tent or park your RV on our 37-acre farm. The campground connects to a hiking trail that takes you to a 2-acre landscaped garden, or to our friendly goats & chickens. You are a short drive to local wineries, or downtown nightlife. No power, or showers here, but the outhouse is one of those fancy solar powered deals with running water and a flushing toilet. Add some farm fresh eggs from our chickens, or a jar of our organic jam, and cook up your breakfast, or head in to town for a fresh baked cinnamon roll.

Wondernut Farm
3 sites · Lodging37 acres · Big Oak Flat, CAWondernut Farm is an upstart, entirely off grid, working farm-stead being built from the ground up. We breed milking goats and sheep, heritage pigs, and are in the process of converting to a grade A dairy and creamery! We use organic practices, management intensive rotational grazing, and dryland pasture management. We sell our animals locally so that others can have their own milking and meat animals. Our 110 year old hay barn and the roof of the former lumber mill were all we had to work with in getting off the ground. Being first and foremost a functional farm, we can't help but offer a somewhat warts-and-all look into everything it takes to be working to our goals. Our hearts are, and always will be, educational and local community focused, and we work closely with farmers and friends alike in better understanding our innovative animal husbandry, power, pasture and water systems. Whenever we have time, we'll afford the same time and opportunities to interested hip-campers. Our location is stunning and historic, and the beauty of the wild, natural landscape is powerful, yet offers easy access to both Yosemite Valley and the San Francisco Bay area. The area features excellent road and mountain biking in the immediate vicinity, vast access to hiking and backpacking trails, a huge variety of rock climbing in the area, the best whitewater rafting in California on the Tuolumne River, with some tasty places to eat or drink coffee in the nearby town of Groveland, just 10 minutes away. Accommodations at the farm are certainly rustic, and private but not secluded, with occasionally heavily project-exploded shared kitchen and living space, showers, and a composting toilet. Do be advised that animals are pooping, hammers are hammering, sometimes we need to look into a health or animal injury related issue. Sometimes there is blood in an animal birth or slaughter, and our working guardian dogs have been known to be noisy some nights. Water and electricity are both very limited (though we reuse all our water), waste must be carefully sorted into a number of different categories, and there is always evidence of ump-teen projects unfolding at once. The most difficult condition during much of the summer are nuisance flies, which are always gone at night. We have almost no mosquitoes or ticks. Depending on the exact situation and time of year, guests may have the opportunities to snuggle with baby animals and run our herd to or from pasture, and maybe even get their hands dirty picking veggies in the garden.
