Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) protects open space on the Peninsula and in the South Bay for the benefit of all. Situated on top of a ridge with expansive redwood forest and coastal views, the Audrey Edna Cabin provides a completely private gathering place and destination for visitors with reservations. The cabin has spectacular views of forest, sky, ocean and the Butano ridgeline. It's a short hike to 8000+ acres of county parkland where you can hike, bike and ride horses (though please note, there are no facilities for horse boarding at the cabin.) The cabin is located at Alpine Ranch, a property adjacent to Sam McDonald County Park that was protected by Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST). Whether you are looking for an active experience or just want to relax in a peaceful, remote setting, there's something here for everyone. This is a rustic hike-in cabin designed for a introductory pack-in experience. Bedding is not provided. It is about a 1.7-mile hike on a rolling dirt road from the Sam McDonald County Park parking lot, with about 650 feet of elevation gain. Most hikers can reach the cabin in an hour or less. Guests should plan to arrive at least 2 hours before sunset, and pack water and flashlights or headlamps. Guests with limited mobility, please contact us for information regarding accommodations that will allow you to access this shared resource. *A note about reservation availability: On the weekends, POST offers priority reservations for the cabin to our partners at the San Mateo County Health Department and Park Rx to provide patients with equitable access to the benefits of nature. Occasionally, we have last-minute public weekend reservation availability due to cancellations. The cabin is reservable up to 3 months in advance, on a rolling basis. Property History: At one time, the ridge of the Santa Cruz Mountains was a thriving center for trade between tribes of the coast and the bay, which we still find evidence of today in cultural sites and artifacts throughout the region. Native people have cared for this land since time immemorial, including the local Muwekma and Ramaytush Ohlone who are still active in the area today. This property specifically is host to a tributary to one of just a handful of waterways that support salmonids in this region, which are a species of tremendous importance to native people. Over 1000 acres here were eventually purchased by entrepreneur Ridgeway Rowley, who built a home on the ranch in the 1880s as part of an unsuccessful wedding proposal to Fannie Page, daughter of a local mill owner (ever heard of Page Mill Road?) After being rejected by Fannie, Rowley operated the ranch for a decade in conjunction with his work as District Attorney and publisher of the Palo Alto Weekly, before eventually returning to his hometown of Cortland, NY, where he lived as a bachelor until his death. Over the course of the 20th century, the ranch was divided, some parts of which became Pescadero Creek County Park. POST purchased the 350 acre home property, now called Alpine Ranch, in 2012 through our Heart of the Redwoods campaign, an initiative to protect 20,000 acres of Redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Alpine Ranch borders Pescadero Creek County Park and Sam McDonald County Park, adding to the area’s protected open space and containing more than a mile of tributaries to Pescadero Creek, which flows year-round and is a major spawning stream for steelhead trout. The Audrey Edna Cabin at Alpine Ranch is situated at one of the property's most scenic overlooks. The cabin was built in the early 1900's, and completely reconstructed up to modern building codes by POST in 2018 so that all could enjoy this special place.

We are conveniently located off of US 101, therefore there may be some freeway noise, during commute hours especially. It has become like white noise to me, but it is only fair to mention it. We offer full hookups which consists of 50 amp & 110 volt electrical outlets, potable water, sewage dump. We also have one pigtail available (with a refundable deposit) if needed to convert 50 amp to 30 amp. We also have one place in the middle of our big vineyards with a 30 amp and water only. No sewer. Our sites are located one mile from Healdsburg plaza, the heart of Sonoma County Wine Country. Our town offers amazing wineries, fantastic restaurants, and quaint shops. It is an excellent place for wine lovers. There is a pre-prohibition winery right across the road called Foppiano. There are many other fabulous wineries are nearby. Ask the host for discount passes or complimentary tasting cards for some of the local wineries. We are in an excellent location for outdoor adventurers. There are plenty of hiking trails near by as well as bike rental shops for those who enjoy trekking, and even a couple of rafting places right here on the Russian River. We are so excited to find this gem. We stayed at campsite three and would highly recommend it. The add-ons were a great bonus. We have a campervan, but the tent platform overlooking the creek looked great. The fire pit had a rake, a shovel, and a fire extinguisher, which is great if you are new to campfires. We will definitely be back.

Redwood and knotty pine hand crafted 31' high tree cabin accessible by ladder only for those 18 years and older. There is a portable toilet on the wraparound deck and an electric luggage lift to get your gear up there safely. It has power and heat and a coffee maker, mini fridge, coffee, and tea. Also some cozy hooded rubs to make your way down to the hot tub in.

I enjoyed a lovely weekend in Airstream 3. The setting offers incredible views of the Pacific and the California coastline, and the arrival instructions were very clear. The airstream is comfortable, well-appointed, and includes all expected amenities aside from food. The cozy interior and the sound of the rain contributed to a very relaxing atmosphere. The only drawback is that Airstream 3 is outfitted with twin beds, which may not be ideal for couples. This wasn’t clearly noted in the online description, so it would be helpful to include that for future guests. Overall, a beautiful and memorable stay.

Bill’s land was one of the best hip camps I have ever stayed at! The Indonesian bedroom was so serene and I slept like a baby with the heated bed. The bathroom was so beautifully decorated with ornate paintings, little treasures, and the stained glass window was intricately stunning. The hot tub was a bonus and it was extremely close to the town of Petaluma and hiking trails. You definitely should stay here for a romantic getaway!

Having a perfect place to camp by ourselves and not having to deal with anyone was ideal. A few cows came up the fence and checked us out. Loved camping in the redwood groves! We had a large group and the hosts were super accommodating to help us get the right setup for our party. A couple of things to note: 1 - the redwood grove campsites ABSOLUTELY require a 4WD or AWD. there is a very bumping/steep road that descends down into the meadow. 2 - the creekside campsites are essentially just parking areas for an RV. we were so lucky that the creek was low so we were able to cross by foot and enjoy the rest of the property on the other side. 3 - don't skip the redwood walking trails on the property!! super beautiful and green area. lots of banana slugs and newts to spot. bonus activity: spot the laurel bay leaf trees! 4 - there is a LOT of poison ivy around the creekside camping sites. make sure your party knows what it looks like, bring cortisone as backup, and do your best to avoid brushing against the edge of the campsite! (worst case, soap and water will help)

Located within 45 minutes of the wine country and 2 miles from the coast, our property is 400 acres of rolling hills and redwood groves, with a creek running along its base. With miles of trails meandering through quiet woods and meadows, you will be able to revel in the tranquility of a private preserve, without sacrificing easy access to some of Sonoma County's most famous attractions. A hundred years ago, this land was used to graze sheep. Remnants of the old fence lines can still be seen in places, along with old cement troughs. Since then, the land has been left to its own devices, passing through many hands, most famously owned by two brothers in the 1980's who built a truly amazing tree house in the forest which has been featured in several magazine articles. It was revamped and updated in 2016 by a master craftsman, using fallen redwood logs found on the property and is now a unique structural work of art, available for overnight stays. We produce 100% grass fed, dry-aged beef on our certified organic pastures and have a store on site if you would like to purchase delicious steaks, ribs, ground beef for hamburgers or some roasts to take home. Our cattle graze on the native grasses, never grain, and drink only water produced from our own springs. We also raise Kiko meat goats and produce pastured, certified organic duck eggs on a commercial basis. Whether it's surfing at sandy beaches, award-winning clam chowder, a wine tour, horseback riding or a hot air balloon ride you're after, you won't have far to drive if you make our ranch your base camp. You may see a family of deer appear suddenly, or a few Scottish Highland cows which we allow to roam freely over the property. There are over twenty species of wild birds that grace this protected spot, so bring your binoculars! Finley Camp is nestled along Finley Creek in West Sonoma County. Campsites are located in open flats surrounded by Coast Doug Fir, Alder, and California Bay forests. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire pit with cooking grate, and access to a porta potty and hand washing station. The campsites are located past the end of the county road allowing for a quiet peaceful experience. Enjoy a quiet stroll on site, the surrounding communities of Bodega, Bodega Bay, Valley Ford, and Tomales, or just enjoy a quiet day in camp. Our sites are located approximately 20 minutes from Bodega Bay. The campsites are 2.5 miles from the coast and the weather can be unpredictable. As a general rule, it is very similar to that of San Francisco. All camp sites are situated in a valley that offers protection from the coastal winds. The have both morning and evening shade. Sites #2, #6, #7, and #11 have the most space, while sites #4, #7, #8, #9 and #11 offer the most privacy. Sites 1-3, any combination of 5-7, and 12-13 are well suited for groups. Other site groupings work well depending on the number of sites being reserved. Site #8 is unique in that it has a wood deck/platform for tents. There are also NO wood fires allowed at site #8 as it is under the tree canopy. A propane firepit is provided for your use. You can bring a 5 gallon propane tank from home, or a full one is available for rent on site. Well behaved dogs are welcome at Finley Camp. All dogs must be kept on leash at all times while on the property. There are no exceptions to this. Slide Ranch is a nonprofit organization established in 1970, becoming one of the first Park Partners in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Slide Ranch is located on the Marin coast, on land that has a rich history in connecting people to food. The Coast Miwok once fished and foraged for food at this site, and in the late 19th century Portuguese dairy farmers purchased the land and produced milk and butter for residents of San Francisco. In 1969, 134 acres of this fertile coastline were rescued from commercial development. Slide Ranch camping fees directly fund scholarships for youth programs throughout the year. Slide Ranch is an unpaved ranch environment. Our trails and garden paths all consist of uneven, sloping terrain, often muddy or soft ground during the winter season, and may be challenging to access for visitors with significant mobility restrictions. Minors aged 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult. No pets allowed; service animals are permitted. We do not have showering facilities or flush toilets. Water in all Slide Ranch taps is potable for refilling water bottles/jugs. Soap is provided for hand washing. Slide Ranch does not have any concessions on site. Excellent Group Site! We only host one group at a time so you can be with your family and friends in a large, flat and private space. We listed the site for up to 12 campers but feel free to reach out if your group is bigger. Please check out the newest addition of our cabin bunkhouse. Take a look at the pictures - you can add it to your stay as an extra when you book! The land was originally purchased in the 1980's. Since then, it has been used by four generations of the family as a place to gather, relax, camp and even celebrate. I had my wedding on the property in 2010. For a few years we held an annual music festival with the very inventive name of Samapalooza. Up to 400 people would attend the day filled with live music, food and drinks. You will still find the stage and bar we built as an outdoor kitchen and dining area. Around 2008, my father and I planted our first olive trees. Many have been planted since which has gifted the land the timeless sense of purpose it deserves. My father dedicated his last years to tending the young trees and now I have taken the mantle to carry the farm forward. 'The Property', as it is known amongst family and friends has always been a place to camp. I have sat around the same fire ring for decades, rain or shine. I hope that fellow hipcampers can find the joy that my family and I have experienced here. This is a very private camp on a small olive farm. Geographically close to highways and the town of Novato, Sonoma and Napa wine country, this camp feels remote and secluded. Only one camp on the property to keep it private and special. You basically have your run of the land. We have just updated the land and made some nice improvements. Located on ten acres, you will drive past a small olive grove before reaching the spacious and open campground. Just up the hill from the camp is a private pond where you can fish, take out a small boat or just sit and watch the birds. It can be great swimming on hot summer days. This spot has been used by the family for decades and is now open to share with fellow nature lovers. Just a note: While the majority of the time you can expect complete privacy, this is a working olive farm. From time to time you may run into me (Sam) or someone else associated with the land. We will always do our best to respect your space.

Breathe deep in nature on our 10-acre property on Kings Mountain, California hillside. Our generously sized Safari-style tents offer a unique blend of comfort and adventure. The property is located 30min from SFO, 40min from San Francisco, 30min from Palo Alto, 20 min from Half Moon Bay. Each tent is perched on a sturdy wooden platform and features a fully furnished deck, providing a cozy space to relax and soak in the breathtaking ocean (Half Moon Bay views) and forest views (Kings Mountain). All tents include a mini fridge and a stove, ideal for light cooking, intimate fireside storytelling, and warmth during cool days. We suggest you bring easy-to-prep food, drinks, warm clothes, hiking shoes, and a beanie, as it can get chilly without notice. Your designated parking space is a 6-minute walk from the campsite (downhill on arrival, then back uphill (steep) in the forest), so we recommend traveling light. Our campsite is nestled within the same property as our charming little farm. Our goats roam the land all day and may visit you for pets and nuzzles. They are gentle, but please do not feed or let them inside the tent. Recharge from the day with a hot shower. The Meadow Grove is a wild and natural pasture with campsites located near the historic Narrow Gauge Railroad bed on a family owned working ranch in coastal Northern California. The camp sites are nestled in a pasture and grove of mixed Eucalyptus, willow and cypress trees. The sites are perfect for tents or camper vans, or small trailers. [When we open in the spring, the grass can be 'slippery' and it is recommended you have 4WD. Around mid-June it is dried out enough for 2WD access to all sites]. Not suitable for RVs It is also, managed and operated by a single mother. Please keep this in mind. Notes about the campsites are: They each come with a picnic table. The grounds are a working ranch, so there is variations of the soil- some lumps and bumps and general natural state of a pasture v. a groomed lawn. Site #1, #2, #3, and #4 have the most level areas for parking and tent-ing. Up until mid-June, we recommend #1 for 2WD access. Campervans that do not have 4WD may have trouble accessing other sites. The ranch itself is 300 acres of rolling hills pasture, with hilltop views of the Estero Americano valley. The Meadow Grove is home to many varieties of raptors and other birds-providing excellent bird watching. Seasonally there are blackberries to fill your containers, and some hiking. We are mere minutes from the quaint towns of Valley Ford, Tomales, and Dillon Beach, and a short drive from Bodega, Bodega Bay or Marshall, Pt. Reyes Station and Inverness. Nearby attractions include: Sonoma Coast beaches, Pt. Reyes National Seashore, coastal hiking trails, local farm-to-table eateries. Inland attractions include: redwoods, wine tasting, Russian River activities and so much more. The ranch borders Hwy 1, so there is some degree of road noise. Traffic usually dies down mid afternoon, and isn't too much of a disturbance. Virtually all traffic on our stretch of road is daytime traffic. Just across Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, Mount Tamalpais State Park offers Bay Area residents a wilderness oasis of peaks, beaches, trails, and redwood trees. The park’s North Bay campgrounds are the perfect way to access the adventure potential of the foggy, forested, 2,571-foot coastal mountain known locally as Mount Tam. Once here, there are 60 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and equestrian trails to explore, and campers can also go surfing, fishing, and whale watching at Mount Tam’s beach section. The Mount Tamalpais summit provides stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, Farallon Islands, and the East Bay’s Mount Diablo—especially at sunrise and sunset. Although a separate entity, the adjacent tourist-favorite Muir Woods National Monument features an easily accessible old growth coastal redwood grove.

Tips for snagging a campsite

Both Pantoll Campground (16 sites) and Bootjack Campground (15 sites) offer first-come, first-served campsites. We recommend arriving early or on a weekday to secure a site.
The Steep Ravine Cabins and Campground sites are extremely popular and frequently book out as soon as reservations are released 6 months in advance. You’ll want to be ready and waiting when reservations open up, either online or by calling (800) 444-7275.

When to go

Camping at Mount Tamalpais State Park is possible year-round, but the park’s cabins are closed in October. Keep an eye out for whales in winter and spring, the latter of which is also great for waterfalls and wildflowers. Visit East Peak or West Peak at nearly any time of year to witness San Francisco's famous fog roll in beneath you. The mild temperatures are comfortable year-round, but it’s best to bring a jacket and rain gear for the area’s many microclimates.

Know before you go

To see redwood trees, hike the Steep Ravine Trail along Webb Creek or visit the nearby Muir Woods National Monument.
Surf lessons and board rentals are available at nearby Stinson Beach, which is also great for laying out, swimming, and sunsets.
The wilderness bordering Mount Tamalpais State Park, which includes the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, adds another 200 miles of trails to explore throughout the Marin Headlands.
The sport of mountain biking was born on the slopes of Mount Tam in the 1970s, and many of the park’s trails are still MTB-accessible. Road cyclists will also be stoked on the park’s endless twists on the climb to Alpine Lake.
If you’re having trouble finding Mount Tam camping, Marin County Hipcamps around the nearby towns of Sausalito, Mill Valley, and San Rafael all have easy day-use access to the park.

Another successful trip to Steep Ravine Campground. Stayed at campsite 1 this time, which had a great view towards the Stinson/Bolinas coastline and privacy from other campsites (you are facing the cabins, which is not a big deal as they are a ways off). It's hard to get a reservation here, but if you are flexible and can go on a weeknight at short notice, cancellations tend to pop up sometimes a few days out. 2nd best campground in the California State Park system.

This is walk up camping unless you are using a vehicle in the parking lot. Steep uphill, not for cushy car campers with a lot of gear. Bring a waggon, a strapping muscle source or not much at all.

This campground is magic! It’s also expensive so make sure you have a big group chipping in. There are two group spots. Group A holds 50 people. There is a kitchen area with a huge grill and a large canopy covering a dining area. Group B holds 25 and has more privacy. We had Group A and had a ton of day hikers invading our site. It isn’t clear that the site is private so I highly suggest that you show up with ways to indicate that it isn’t public. We ended up making “Reserved” signs for all the tables. After a family invaded our Camp Dinner to complain, we had to rope off the stairs to the site. The restrooms are well maintained. The area is gorgeous! So many trails. We visited during a rain storm so there were waterfalls everywhere.

We were lucky enough to reserve the "Hot-n-Tot" campsite one magical week in July. Our site was very private up on the bluff with ocean views in every direction. We packed a shade tent & sat there for hours watching whales breech and deer run by "our living room". Just beware of the raccoons, they are very brave! The private beach is a little rocky & only accessible during low tide, but Stinson beach is just a short drive away.

Frank Valley Group Horse Campground

Beautiful campsite with easy access to trails. Dogs are allowed in campsites on leash. Definitely check the weather forecast because it can get cold and wet pretty quickly. Campsites 3, 4, 5, 8 & 9 are the driest since they are on the leeward side of the mountain. Remember to bring a lock to secure food items. Keep food items on higher shelves and towards the inner wall (away from the wall). We were at campsite #10 and raccoons raided food items every night although we had locked the camp pantry. Firewood is available from the ranger station (open 8 am - 3:30 pm) for $8. You can use the dropbox to pay for a campsite after hours. We enjoyed our trip and hope to be back soon.

Hikers come into the camp all the time, both to use the bathroom (which is fine), but also to pet and feed animals without asking, so bring a sign asking people to please not feed the animals. It’s pretty awkward to have random people walk right into the middle of the camp and hang out with no comment when you’re showering, changing etc. 2. Bring TP because it can run out at the end of the day depending on # of walk-ins. 3. Fallen trees block trails and cause huge detours

It can get really chilly and misty here! Best to bring lots of layers and definitely use that tent fly to protect you from waking up covered in dew :) Beauuutiful, magical foresty feel. Best to go on weekdays if possible, campgrounds are rather close to each other. Hiking is ample and has pretty fantastic views if the sky is clear enough.

One of the best locations for camp sites that I have been to for quick trips to SF or some of the most amazing sunset views from Mt. Tam. Clean sites, nice bathrooms and a camp host with firewood.

This site is in the mountains near the ocean, so be aware that heavy fog will build up condensation on the trees which will rain down over the site starting in the middle of the night until the early morning. Anything left out will get wet. Great spot with lots of hiking options to choose from. The info booth has all the details on the activities available. The lower campsites are very close together and close to the parking lot/ road. If you want some privacy it's best to choose the campsites higher up.

Camped here last minute I think we were at #14. Close by Stinsons :) Loved this site because it was so pretty. The weather wasn't the best when we stayed here. Wasn't sure if it was just raining or just the mist from the trees. Started at night til check out night- Thankfully our tent (Marmot Limelight) stayed dry all night. I didn't mind it cus of the experience but some people left early. I guess my only suggestion is to not camp here if your tent gets moist? hahaha I would totally be down to go here again!

My favorite place to go for a quick trip. Whales breaching, dolphins, seals, swallows, snakes, rabbits, hawks. This is a lovely slice of heaven,. Each cabin has a view of the ocean and you fall asleep listening to waves. No water or electricity in cabins. No showers.

Love Mt. Tam, magical place, near Muir Woods, Bolinas is a short Drive. Sulphur Hot Springs can be found down on the beach near Stinson.

The campgrounds get busy, especially on weekends. If you are going for solitude I don;t recommend. If a social atmosphere is what you are after then it's 2 thumbs up up!

Tried camping here over the weekend. I read that it is first come, first served. So I left early, driving from Sacramento, and arrived at 10am. There were only a couple sites left. I didn't realize I'd be hiking my gear up a hill from a parking lot and had packed heavy stuff (cooler, big tent, etc). I also didn't realize how quickly the sites get taken by Bay Area folks. I had called the ranger station at Pantoll and a gentleman there said if I arrived by noon, I would get a spot. This just isn't the case. Also, the weather forecast was way off. High was supposed to be 76, but it was 93. Plus, it's very crowded. I paid for 2 nights, but ended up leaving on the 2nd day. Definitely not my fave place.

First come, first serve. I came up on a Sunday so it was no problem to secure a spot. Very friendly ranger that allowed me to browse spots before choosing. It gets darker earlier because of the canopy, so set up camp before heading out on any sunset hikes. You are right at the base of a ton of trailheads so take your pic of coast or bay. The sites had a fire pit, grill, table and a sizable lock box.

Best place ever. Bring: - Window-size fabrics to serve as curtains (clips provided) - Water container for use indoors (no running water) - Solar lights/lanterns for indoor use at night (no electricity)

The cabins have tables, wood burning stoves, and place to sleep - but you should bring lighting, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag. Be sure to sleep with the windows open to hear the waves!
