Get in on a little secret that lies just across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco. Let us introduce you to the elusive Steep Ravine Cabins and Campground in Marin.

On Mt. Tamalpais, just to the north of the city, there are a group of wooden structures that date back to the 1940s. They are insanely popular and rightfully so. Each cabin features a wood stove, picnic table and several benches, sleeping platforms, and of course, an outdoor barbeque.

The cabins do not have running water or electricity, but primitive toilets, water faucets, and firewood are nearby. The best attribute is that they all feature expansive ocean views, as they are perched high up on the side of a cliff.

The Steep Ravine Environmental Campground is also a great choice (if not one of the best in the area!) for Mount Tamalpais camping. If you like tent camping, then this is your spot. It’s also hugely popular and fills up fast, as there are only seven campsites.

It is on the western edge of the park, and just to make matters more awesome, they are all overlooking the ocean. There’s lots of privacy and tons to do right around camp.

The campsites are a few hundred yards from the parking area. Each site has a table, fire pit, food locker, and space for a tent. Primitive toilets and water faucets are nearby. There are no showers, but don’t worry... it’s totally worth it.

Located within 45 minutes of the wine country and 2 miles from the coast, our property is 400 acres of rolling hills and redwood groves, with a creek running along its base. With miles of trails meandering through quiet woods and meadows, you will be able to revel in the tranquility of a private preserve, without sacrificing easy access to some of Sonoma County's most famous attractions. A hundred years ago, this land was used to graze sheep. Remnants of the old fence lines can still be seen in places, along with old cement troughs. Since then, the land has been left to its own devices, passing through many hands, most famously owned by two brothers in the 1980's who built a truly amazing tree house in the forest which has been featured in several magazine articles. It was revamped and updated in 2016 by a master craftsman, using fallen redwood logs found on the property and is now a unique structural work of art, available for overnight stays. We produce 100% grass fed, dry-aged beef on our certified organic pastures and have a store on site if you would like to purchase delicious steaks, ribs, ground beef for hamburgers or some roasts to take home. Our cattle graze on the native grasses, never grain, and drink only water produced from our own springs. We also raise Kiko meat goats and produce pastured, certified organic duck eggs on a commercial basis. Whether it's surfing at sandy beaches, award-winning clam chowder, a wine tour, horseback riding or a hot air balloon ride you're after, you won't have far to drive if you make our ranch your base camp. You may see a family of deer appear suddenly, or a few Scottish Highland cows which we allow to roam freely over the property. There are over twenty species of wild birds that grace this protected spot, so bring your binoculars! A portion of your fee goes towards protecting native flora and fauna as part of our private wildlife preservation program. A limited number of private, widely spaced camp spots are available for visitors. The Eagles' Nest Treehouse (mentioned above) is very isolated and you may or may not even be aware that there are other people within miles of you. For those who value nature, seclusion, quiet and the artistry of old growth redwood, this is the place for you.

Finley Camp is nestled along Finley Creek in West Sonoma County. Campsites are located in open flats surrounded by Coast Doug Fir, Alder, and California Bay forests. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire pit with cooking grate, and access to a porta potty and hand washing station. The campsites are located past the end of the county road allowing for a quiet peaceful experience. Enjoy a quiet stroll on site, the surrounding communities of Bodega, Bodega Bay, Valley Ford, and Tomales, or just enjoy a quiet day in camp. Our sites are located approximately 20 minutes from Bodega Bay. The campsites are 2.5 miles from the coast and the weather can be unpredictable. As a general rule, it is very similar to that of San Francisco. All camp sites are situated in a valley that offers protection from the coastal winds. The have both morning and evening shade. Sites #2, #6, #7, and #11 have the most space, while sites #4, #7, #8, #9 and #11 offer the most privacy. Sites 1-3, any combination of 5-7, and 12-13 are well suited for groups. Other site groupings work well depending on the number of sites being reserved. Site #8 is unique in that it has a wood deck/platform for tents. There are also NO wood fires allowed at site #8 as it is under the tree canopy. A propane firepit is provided for your use. You can bring a 5 gallon propane tank from home, or a full one is available for rent on site. Well behaved dogs are welcome at Finley Camp. All dogs must be kept on leash at all times while on the property. There are no exceptions to this. Finley Camp is located on an active cattle ranch and directly adjacent to a neighboring ranch with cattle. Also be sure to check out our orchard tours! The apples are ripe now and our verities will continue to ripen thru late November. We'll take you to our family orchard where you can pick apples, pears, or blueberries in season and taste yummy treats out of our family garden.

Slide Ranch is a nonprofit organization established in 1970, becoming one of the first Park Partners in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Slide Ranch is located on the Marin coast, on land that has a rich history in connecting people to food. The Coast Miwok once fished and foraged for food at this site, and in the late 19th century Portuguese dairy farmers purchased the land and produced milk and butter for residents of San Francisco. In 1969, 134 acres of this fertile coastline were rescued from commercial development. Slide Ranch camping fees directly fund scholarships for youth programs throughout the year. Slide Ranch is an unpaved ranch environment. Our trails and garden paths all consist of uneven, sloping terrain, often muddy or soft ground during the winter season, and may be challenging to access for visitors with significant mobility restrictions. Minors aged 17 and under must be accompanied by an adult. No pets allowed; service animals are permitted. We do not have showering facilities or flush toilets. Water in all Slide Ranch taps is potable for refilling water bottles/jugs. Soap is provided for hand washing. Slide Ranch does not have any concessions on site. Camping is not supported by the on-site staff. Per current GGNRA regulations, campfires and open flames of any kind are not allowed.

Excellent Group Site! We only host one group at a time so you can be with your family and friends in a large, flat and private space. We listed the site for up to 12 campers but feel free to reach out if your group is bigger. Please check out the newest addition of our cabin bunkhouse. Take a look at the pictures - you can add it to your stay as an extra when you book! The land was originally purchased in the 1980's. Since then, it has been used by four generations of the family as a place to gather, relax, camp and even celebrate. I had my wedding on the property in 2010. For a few years we held an annual music festival with the very inventive name of Samapalooza. Up to 400 people would attend the day filled with live music, food and drinks. You will still find the stage and bar we built as an outdoor kitchen and dining area. Around 2008, my father and I planted our first olive trees. Many have been planted since which has gifted the land the timeless sense of purpose it deserves. My father dedicated his last years to tending the young trees and now I have taken the mantle to carry the farm forward. 'The Property', as it is known amongst family and friends has always been a place to camp. I have sat around the same fire ring for decades, rain or shine. I hope that fellow hipcampers can find the joy that my family and I have experienced here. This is a very private camp on a small olive farm. Geographically close to highways and the town of Novato, Sonoma and Napa wine country, this camp feels remote and secluded. Only one camp on the property to keep it private and special. You basically have your run of the land. We have just updated the land and made some nice improvements. Located on ten acres, you will drive past a small olive grove before reaching the spacious and open campground. Just up the hill from the camp is a private pond where you can fish, take out a small boat or just sit and watch the birds. It can be great swimming on hot summer days. This spot has been used by the family for decades and is now open to share with fellow nature lovers. Just a note: While the majority of the time you can expect complete privacy, this is a working olive farm. From time to time you may run into me (Sam) or someone else associated with the land. We will always do our best to respect your space.

The Meadow Grove is a wild and natural pasture with campsites located near the historic Narrow Gauge Railroad bed on a family owned working ranch in coastal Northern California. The camp sites are nestled in a pasture and grove of mixed Eucalyptus, willow and cypress trees. The sites are perfect for tents or camper vans, or small trailers. [When we open in the spring, the grass can be 'slippery' and it is recommended you have 4WD. Around mid-June it is dried out enough for 2WD access to all sites]. Not suitable for RVs It is also, managed and operated by a single mother. Please keep this in mind. Notes about the campsites are: They each come with a picnic table. The grounds are a working ranch, so there is variations of the soil- some lumps and bumps and general natural state of a pasture v. a groomed lawn. Site #1, #2, #3, and #4 have the most level areas for parking and tent-ing. Up until mid-June, we recommend #1 for 2WD access. Campervans that do not have 4WD may have trouble accessing other sites. Please remember this when you book! *Campers who "change sites" without written approval by the host will be charged double!* There is a composting camp toilet, we do not have running water at the campground. The ranch itself is 300 acres of rolling hills pasture, with hilltop views of the Estero Americano valley. The Meadow Grove is home to many varieties of raptors and other birds-providing excellent bird watching. Seasonally there are blackberries to fill your containers, and some hiking. We are mere minutes from the quaint towns of Valley Ford, Tomales, and Dillon Beach, and a short drive from Bodega, Bodega Bay or Marshall, Pt. Reyes Station and Inverness. Nearby attractions include: Sonoma Coast beaches, Pt. Reyes National Seashore, coastal hiking trails, local farm-to-table eateries. Inland attractions include: redwoods, wine tasting, Russian River activities and so much more. The ranch borders Hwy 1, so there is some degree of road noise. Traffic usually dies down mid afternoon, and isn't too much of a disturbance. Virtually all traffic on our stretch of road is daytime traffic. There can be however, some heavy weekend traffic during the day with car clubs and motorcycle riders enjoying the coastal highway. *The Friendly Gray Cat's name is Boots!*

Another successful trip to Steep Ravine Campground. Stayed at campsite 1 this time, which had a great view towards the Stinson/Bolinas coastline and privacy from other campsites (you are facing the cabins, which is not a big deal as they are a ways off). It's hard to get a reservation here, but if you are flexible and can go on a weeknight at short notice, cancellations tend to pop up sometimes a few days out. 2nd best campground in the California State Park system.

We were lucky enough to reserve the "Hot-n-Tot" campsite one magical week in July. Our site was very private up on the bluff with ocean views in every direction. We packed a shade tent & sat there for hours watching whales breech and deer run by "our living room". Just beware of the raccoons, they are very brave! The private beach is a little rocky & only accessible during low tide, but Stinson beach is just a short drive away.

My favorite place to go for a quick trip. Whales breaching, dolphins, seals, swallows, snakes, rabbits, hawks. This is a lovely slice of heaven,. Each cabin has a view of the ocean and you fall asleep listening to waves. No water or electricity in cabins. No showers.

Best place ever. Bring: - Window-size fabrics to serve as curtains (clips provided) - Water container for use indoors (no running water) - Solar lights/lanterns for indoor use at night (no electricity)

The cabins have tables, wood burning stoves, and place to sleep - but you should bring lighting, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag. Be sure to sleep with the windows open to hear the waves!

Arriving before dark makes finding your campsite a lot easier but maybe less exciting. It was incredible to wake up in the morning and see what we'd navigated through in dark, not to mention the stunning wild California coast around us.

stayed at env campsite 1. beautiful views of the water. would highly recommend camping. notes: 1: it wasnt very windy at in the evening/night, but got very windy in the morning and our tent was pulled from a few anchors. so anchor your tent very well even if it seems tame at night. 2: firewood is $8 3: *print your reservation confirmation to put on your dashboard. per the caretaker, they often ticket those who don't have reservation on the dash. 4: there are bathrooms + water + storage on site for campers 5: there are wheelbarrows for bringing supplies from parking lot to your campsite 6: *call for the gate code the day of!

Its an adventure! The mice ate/stole a 4" hole out of my jacket overnight. Beautiful view, and nice hiking. Get lots of firewood. Can be windy and cold. Bring curtain material for privacy. Don't bring wool.Keep your food stuffs in a tough container. Bring cushions for bedding. Only parking for 1 car per cabin. then you have to carry your stuff down the hill to your cabin. Honestly, for the effort not sure we'll go again. Might camp there instead.

So far I have tent camped at site 5 in sunny January and just now at site 6 in rainy October. Both times were stunning. The tent sites are remote and separate, hardly visible. Longer walk back to the (flush) toilet but outhouse is in close proximity. Fire pits and provided food lockers must be used, our ice chest rolling around at 3:30 am (because it wouldn't fit) reminded us of that. Thankfully it was locked and the animal couldn't get inside. Be sure to walk the pathway out around the tent sites on the bluffs. Stunning views. Deer and wildlife are EVERYwhere. Keep the place pristine. Wanted to do a walk-up to stay an extra night, but the Camp Host's house said this was done by lottery at 2:00 at Pantoll. Be advised!

Beautiful location so close to the City. Had no idea this was here! The girl got us a spot that must have been a cancellation because it was on such short notice. Very secluded. Only noise was from the raccoons in the brush waiting for us to fall asleep to take our food. Oh and the waves. Love falling asleep to that sound. We were there on an extremely nice night. No fog or clouds and very little wind. We brought our own firewood but they do have bundles for sale in the parking lot, along with wheelbarrows to help you get it to your site. We didn't have much time to explore the area as we got there around 8pm, but the morning revealed the beautiful view that we had not seen yet. Be sure to trek down to the little cove if you can.

Steep Ravine campground is so private and relaxing. We brought our friends who were visiting California (from Scotland) here, and it was such a unique and memorable experience for them. There is not a bad location or spot, the views from all the sites are overwhelmingly beautiful. I love the windy drive down (or bike ride) to get down to the campground. This is one of my most favorite places to camp and while a bit more challenging to book, considering a weeknight stay is totally worth it!

My favorite place i have ever camped. The campsites are private and each one has its own personality. Little trails wind around the cliffs and down to the ocean. In the spring there are hundreds of calla lilies. The bathrooms are very clean. Nearby hiking is beautiful--the Steep Ravine trail (across the street from the entrance) follows Webb Creek up to the top of the mountains where you can see the bay and all its glory.

Camped at environmental site #4. Very secluded and only steps from the ocean view. This whole area is pretty secluded because there are only a limited number of cabins and environmental sites (for tents). Falling asleep with the ocean sounds was the best part. I do hope to go back in the future and check out one of the cabins. They are hard to book so if you come across and opening book it! TIP: You'll need the gate code before entering. Luckily I was able to call.

-Cabins 7/8 closest to water. -Has cell service there so it's good for coordinating groups, can still get your 'grams in, but there is something to be said about TRULY unplugging (though not a bad place to "work from home".) -For park extra cars, easy to find spots on the highway just by the gate. -Echoing Courtney below: BRING CUSHIONS especially for the benches- all of our arses are not the happiest after 2 nights. Standard camp pads were fine for the beds, though they did slide around a bit. -Plenty of wood on site so save some room in your trunk ($8 bucks/bundle). -Many spigots nearby. -Clean bathrooms available with fresh water (no showers). -The camp host is wonderful and super friendly, so don't leave your cabin wrecked!

People go nuts for the cabins, but I personally love the campsites at Steep Ravine better. Great views, and good privacy due to the terrain. Sites 2 & 3 are the best to book for a big group, and are also protected from wind by awesome Cypress trees. Love it!
