Timber Ridge Redwood Ranch
3 sites · Lodging25 acres · Aptos, CASanta Cruz County is a magical place. The origins of the counter culture in the sixties, the majestic redwoods, a legacy of generations of farming and caring for the land. We are at 880 foot elevation three miles inland from Monterey Bay nestled in the redwoods and oaks. Above the fog line for most of the year, the climate is perfect for growing the many fruits and vegetables. Our roots at Timber Ridge run deep. Born and raised on this mountain a quarter mile from the farm, our family protected and has been nurtured by this land. This legacy is passed on to you with every breath of the Santa Cruz Mountain air. Judy moved onto the land in 1979 and grew produce here for 34 years. She planted seventy five Meyer lemon trees that continue to produce the best lemons. She left us the land when she passed in 2014, and we are passionate about continuing her legacy of natural farming and care for the earth. The enlightened consciousness and concern for health and purity in Santa Cruz County began on September 27th, 1965 when Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters held their first Acid Test in Soquel, a few miles from our farm. Jerry Garcia and the Warlocks were there, a week before they became the Grateful Dead. Jerry continued to play in Santa Cruz County, doing many gigs here, including at the Town and Country in Ben Lomond on July 12, 1972 with Tom Fogarty and Merle Saunders (admission $2.50). Our farm shares the same fertile soil found in Watsonville, famous for strawberries; Castroville, famous for artichokes; and Steinbeck country in the Salinas Valley, famous for produce of all kinds. We have created a living soil for our grow, 100% natural and organic using on the finest natural amendments available. 4.6 miles (approx. 17 min drive) to Seacliff State Beach. 12.5 miles (approx. 30 min drive) from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. 38.7 miles (approx. 1 hour drive) from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. -From our family to yours, only the best!

the Artist Ranch at Rebel Ridge
4 sites · Lodging, RVs4 acres · Pescadero, CAA mysterious parcel. Reputedly home to an art school that went by the name 'the Art Ranch of Pescadero in the 60' (Imagine all the weed that was smoked here). All that remained was a few stories and the dorms. The Dorms were highly dilapidated when we arrived but we have been clearing them out and making them shine, at least, so far. Two of the dorm rooms are ready for guests, the other two....well, maybe a hobo, but those will be made into something as well, by and by. The overall state of the property when we arrived was choked with coyote brush, poison oak, and berry bushes, the dorms were left completely open to elements and wildlife, and bees, bats, and rats had the run of the place for the better part of 40 years. Little by little we are restoring its dignity, while retaining the soul of the place. If anyone who has artistic talent were to stay, we would love for you to bestow some mark of your passing through, if the thought struck you. Please also understand we have boards, hoses, building materials and salvaged items sometimes with no place to go, dont be surprised to see three wood burning stoves in the back yard, a couple tools, and some burls or boards laying about. We live off grid and independently so we are always repairing our things or maintaining or you name it, so setting the expectation.

Soak away your aches and pains in the huge seven-person hot tub. Take a left out of our driveway and you'll arrive to stunning and vast Pacific Coastline rocky beaches in only eight miles. Help us feed Cosmo the llama, our American Blackbelly sheep, chickens, ducks and geese. Lots of peace, quiet, sun and stars here! Coleman Valley Road is known as the most beautiful road in Sonoma County. Shanti is strategically located on Coleman Valley Road and only a short two-mile drive, bike ride or lovely walk from the cute little hamlet of Occidental with its eclectic shops, famous eateries and pub, art center and Friday afternoon Farmer's Market. The drive from Occidental to Shanti affords beautiful views of Mount Saint Helena and the surrounding Mayacamas Mountains to the east. But it is further west that attracts so many visitors. The remaining eight miles from Shanti along Coleman Valley Road to the ocean are a shockingly narrow, curvy and spectacularly panoramic drive known as "The Most Beautiful Road in Sonoma County." Forested landscapes of a varied ecosystem of deciduous Oaks, Redwoods and Douglas firs give way to sudden vistas of huge boulder-strewn meadows and a fog-shrouded ocean that stretches into eternity. The drive to the coast only takes about 30 minutes, but you are guaranteed to stop and take lots of photos all along the way. This is the number one scenic attraction in the area, and it is just a left turn out of Shanti's driveway. We are unique in that we offer you to feed our 200 animals twice daily if you so chose. Many kids and adults find the feedings to be the highlight of their trip. If you want, you can get involved in farm life here, by washing and packaging eggs, unloading chicken feed, and helping us in the garden. Shanti personnel are super pet friendly, LGBTQ friendly and 420 friendly. We have a reasonable cleaning fee of $50 for La Pequena. Things to do at Shanti Walk around the property and investigate the Old Growth Trees and Pond Relax in the gigantic seven-person hot tub under the grandmother 300-800 year old Redwood Tree Take a hike to The Grove of the Old Trees or Willow Creek Nature Preserve -- both within three miles of Shanti. Other things to note Shanti Vacation Rental is very, very quiet. We are void of any light pollution, too. This allows for an extremely peaceful stay for our guests. Wondernut Farm
4 sites · Lodging37 acres · Big Oak Flat, CAWondernut Farm is an upstart, entirely off grid, working farm-stead being built from the ground up. We breed milking goats and sheep, heritage pigs, and are in the process of converting to a grade A dairy and creamery! We use organic practices, management intensive rotational grazing, and dryland pasture management. We sell our animals locally so that others can have their own milking and meat animals. Our 110 year old hay barn and the roof of the former lumber mill were all we had to work with in getting off the ground. Being first and foremost a functional farm, we can't help but offer a somewhat warts-and-all look into everything it takes to be working to our goals. Our hearts are, and always will be, educational and local community focused, and we work closely with farmers and friends alike in better understanding our innovative animal husbandry, power, pasture and water systems. Whenever we have time, we'll afford the same time and opportunities to interested hip-campers. Our location is stunning and historic, and the beauty of the wild, natural landscape is powerful, yet offers easy access to both Yosemite Valley and the San Francisco Bay area. The area features excellent road and mountain biking in the immediate vicinity, vast access to hiking and backpacking trails, a huge variety of rock climbing in the area, the best whitewater rafting in California on the Tuolumne River, with some tasty places to eat or drink coffee in the nearby town of Groveland, just 10 minutes away. Accommodations at the farm are certainly rustic, and private but not secluded, with occasionally heavily project-exploded shared kitchen and living space, showers, and a composting toilet. Do be advised that animals are pooping, hammers are hammering, sometimes we need to look into a health or animal injury related issue. Sometimes there is blood in an animal birth or slaughter, and our working guardian dogs have been known to be noisy some nights. Water and electricity are both very limited (though we reuse all our water), waste must be carefully sorted into a number of different categories, and there is always evidence of ump-teen projects unfolding at once. The most difficult condition during much of the summer are nuisance flies, which are always gone at night. We have almost no mosquitoes or ticks. Depending on the exact situation and time of year, guests may have the opportunities to snuggle with baby animals and run our herd to or from pasture, and maybe even get their hands dirty picking veggies in the garden.

With Redwood forests and the Santa Cruz Mountains lining the landscape north of town, Santa Cruz offers both a cozy cabin destination in the wilderness and a livelier getaway in town, where the beach boardwalk and bustling downtown district draw lots of visitors. A series of state parks located between highways 1 and 9 show off the mighty coastal redwoods: Portola Redwoods, Butano, Big Basin Redwoods, and Henry Cowell. In this area along Highway 9, you can find woodsy resorts with rustic cabins, as well as private cabins and tiny houses for rent. In town and on the beach, it’s more cottages than cabins, but plenty are available for rent if you want proximity to the surf and local bars and restaurants. It’s a very popular region in the summer, so plan ahead, or consider visiting another time of year when the weather is wetter and cooler.
