Shanti Permaculture Farm
11 sites · Lodging6 acres · CAShanti Permaculture Farm is nestled in the majestic Redwoods of Occidental. We are dog and pet friendly with a large driveway to run and play fetch. Soak away your aches and pains in the huge seven-person hot tub. Take a left out of our driveway and you'll arrive to stunning and vast Pacific Coastline rocky beaches in only eight miles. Help us feed Cosmo the llama, our American Blackbelly sheep, chickens, ducks and geese. Lots of peace, quiet, sun and stars here! Coleman Valley Road is known as the most beautiful road in Sonoma County. Shanti is strategically located on Coleman Valley Road and only a short two-mile drive, bike ride or lovely walk from the cute little hamlet of Occidental with its eclectic shops, famous eateries and pub, art center and Friday afternoon Farmer's Market. The drive from Occidental to Shanti affords beautiful views of Mount Saint Helena and the surrounding Mayacamas Mountains to the east. But it is further west that attracts so many visitors. The remaining eight miles from Shanti along Coleman Valley Road to the ocean are a shockingly narrow, curvy and spectacularly panoramic drive known as "The Most Beautiful Road in Sonoma County." Forested landscapes of a varied ecosystem of deciduous Oaks, Redwoods and Douglas firs give way to sudden vistas of huge boulder-strewn meadows and a fog-shrouded ocean that stretches into eternity. The drive to the coast only takes about 30 minutes, but you are guaranteed to stop and take lots of photos all along the way. This is the number one scenic attraction in the area, and it is just a left turn out of Shanti's driveway. We are unique in that we offer you to feed our 200 animals twice daily if you so chose. Many kids and adults find the feedings to be the highlight of their trip. If you want, you can get involved in farm life here, by washing and packaging eggs, unloading chicken feed, and helping us in the garden. Shanti personnel are super pet friendly, LGBTQ friendly and 420 friendly. We have a reasonable cleaning fee of $50 for La Pequena. Things to do at Shanti Walk around the property and investigate the Old Growth Trees and Pond Relax in the gigantic seven-person hot tub under the grandmother 300-800 year old Redwood Tree Take a hike to The Grove of the Old Trees or Willow Creek Nature Preserve -- both within three miles of Shanti. Swim, meditate, fish or throw sticks to Elizabeth's Field Spaniels Libby and Lucy at the pond Swing in the hammock as you snooze in your quiet, private backyard Get a professional massage from Elizabeth on site ($85-105) Seasonally pick fresh vegetables, herbs, berries and fruits to make your own meals Gather eggs from the chicken coop for your breakfast and help us wash and package them for the Farm Stand Practice yoga on your private deck. Play tennis, ping pong or golf at nearby Northwoods Golf Course or the courts at the Occidental YMCA. Listen to the sounds of birds in the surrounding trees and frogs in the pond. There is no noise pollution at Shanti! Gaze at the stars at night across the sky from the hot tub with absolutely no light pollution. Catch up on reading books, taking naps and making love. Other things to note Shanti Vacation Rental is very, very quiet. We are void of any light pollution, too. This allows for an extremely peaceful stay for our guests. We are neighbors with the famous Occidental Art and Ecology Center which promotes ecologically and culturally resilient communities. In addition, we are neighbors with the Western Hill Gardens which has rare plants and amazingly beautiful grounds. You are welcome here.

Wondernut Farm
4 sites · Lodging37 acres · Big Oak Flat, CAWondernut Farm is an upstart, entirely off grid, working farm-stead being built from the ground up. We breed milking goats and sheep, heritage pigs, and are in the process of converting to a grade A dairy and creamery! We use organic practices, management intensive rotational grazing, and dryland pasture management. We sell our animals locally so that others can have their own milking and meat animals. Our 110 year old hay barn and the roof of the former lumber mill were all we had to work with in getting off the ground. Being first and foremost a functional farm, we can't help but offer a somewhat warts-and-all look into everything it takes to be working to our goals. Our hearts are, and always will be, educational and local community focused, and we work closely with farmers and friends alike in better understanding our innovative animal husbandry, power, pasture and water systems. Whenever we have time, we'll afford the same time and opportunities to interested hip-campers. Our location is stunning and historic, and the beauty of the wild, natural landscape is powerful, yet offers easy access to both Yosemite Valley and the San Francisco Bay area. The area features excellent road and mountain biking in the immediate vicinity, vast access to hiking and backpacking trails, a huge variety of rock climbing in the area, the best whitewater rafting in California on the Tuolumne River, with some tasty places to eat or drink coffee in the nearby town of Groveland, just 10 minutes away. Accommodations at the farm are certainly rustic, and private but not secluded, with occasionally heavily project-exploded shared kitchen and living space, showers, and a composting toilet. Do be advised that animals are pooping, hammers are hammering, sometimes we need to look into a health or animal injury related issue. Sometimes there is blood in an animal birth or slaughter, and our working guardian dogs have been known to be noisy some nights. Water and electricity are both very limited (though we reuse all our water), waste must be carefully sorted into a number of different categories, and there is always evidence of ump-teen projects unfolding at once. The most difficult condition during much of the summer are nuisance flies, which are always gone at night. We have almost no mosquitoes or ticks. Depending on the exact situation and time of year, guests may have the opportunities to snuggle with baby animals and run our herd to or from pasture, and maybe even get their hands dirty picking veggies in the garden.

the Artist Ranch at Rebel Ridge
4 sites · Lodging, RVs4 acres · Pescadero, CAA mysterious parcel. Reputedly home to an art school that went by the name 'the Art Ranch of Pescadero in the 60' (Imagine all the weed that was smoked here). All that remained was a few stories and the dorms. The Dorms were highly dilapidated when we arrived but we have been clearing them out and making them shine, at least, so far. Two of the dorm rooms are ready for guests, the other two....well, maybe a hobo, but those will be made into something as well, by and by. The overall state of the property when we arrived was choked with coyote brush, poison oak, and berry bushes, the dorms were left completely open to elements and wildlife, and bees, bats, and rats had the run of the place for the better part of 40 years. Little by little we are restoring its dignity, while retaining the soul of the place. If anyone who has artistic talent were to stay, we would love for you to bestow some mark of your passing through, if the thought struck you. Please also understand we have boards, hoses, building materials and salvaged items sometimes with no place to go, dont be surprised to see three wood burning stoves in the back yard, a couple tools, and some burls or boards laying about. We live off grid and independently so we are always repairing our things or maintaining or you name it, so setting the expectation.

Oz Farm
77 sites · Lodging230 acres · Point Arena, CAOriginally purchased in the late 60's by "Redwood and Savatri", Oz Farm was initially a commune of sorts and is no doubt a very special place...heck, its even got it's own comic book! The working farm is comprised of over 230 accessible acres of flowing meadows, redwood groves, prime agriculture, and is intersected by the beautiful Garcia River, which flows into the mighty pacific. One thing that is very apparent, is how clearly passionate the community at Oz Farm is about ecology and agriculture. Once you step foot onto Oz Farm, you'll begin to understand why.The property is open seasonally and frequently rented by full-camp retreats and events throughout the summer. The capital of the Golden State is halfway between the Pacific Ocean and the legendary Sierra Nevada mountain range, making for easy access to some of Californias greatest adventures. A short drive outside Sacramento in either direction is a dream for campers and outdoor enthusiasts—whether rustic cabins in the Gold Country foothills, winter chalets in the dramatic granite peaks of the Sierra Nevada, or coastal cabins near the San Francisco Bay Area. Cabins near Sacramento include anything and everything from rustic stone cabins by the riverfront, modernist wood cabins in the gold country, and traditional log cabins dotted throughout the region. Depending on the time of year, cabin dwellers in the greater Sacramento region might spend time  kayaking the American River, hiking near Donner Pass and Truckee, or gold panning near Grass Valley. Summer brings triple-digit temperatures to Sacramento and is a nice time to go wine tasting in neighboring Amador County. Late spring and early fall bring the best temperatures for backpacking, boating, and mountain biking, while wintertime brings skiers and snowboarders to the slopes of Kirkwood and Lake Tahoe, both popular areas for cozy cabins.
