Imagine a place where the songs of red wing blackbirds fill the air. A place where you can see as far as the ocean to the west, the mountains of Humboldt County to the north, the Mendocino National Forest to the east, and the mountains of Sonoma County to the south. This is Red Wing Ranch.
While staying at Red Wing Ranch you will have the opportunity to walk on a section of the original stagecoach road, canoe in our private pond, watch the sunset over the Pacific ocean, and star gaze from what feels like a private planetarium. This is perfect for artists, writers, yogis, and those seeking the tranquility of off grid living. We have 40 acres of land with beautiful hiking in every direction. Our campsites have a fire pit, picnic table, and access to an outdoor shower and outdoor kitchen!
The accommodation includes staying in a 850 square foot wooden yurt with bamboo floors. The building has a wooden stove and propane wall heat. We also have a fridge, stove for cooking and propane wall heater inside the yurt. There is a futon that sleeps 2 plus a kids size bed, but please bring sleeping bags or bedding. You can also put up two tents next to the yurt for more sleeping.
We have now added also an attached kitchen and bathroom to the yurt so we have an indoor shower and full kitchen!
There is a detached bathroom with a maintenance free composting toilet and simple outdoor kitchen. You will have access to cooking utensils and cookware, camp stove, and fire pit. There is a solar system so you have access to electricity and wifi.
The drive from Willits is 25 minutes, with only the last 5 minutes on a dirt road. You can do the drive in any car, unless the occasional snowy conditions. There is plenty of parking next to the yurt for easy unpacking.. To access the coast you do have to go back through Willits and use highway 20.

Established in 2012.Camp Noyo was first developed as a logging camp for the Union Lumber Company in 1907. Originally called "Camp Four," it was the fourth camp established by the lumber company as they progressed east from Fort Bragg along the current route of the California Western Railroad. In 1933, the Union Lumber Company donated the property to the Boy Scouts of America. The Boy Scouts began using the site in the summer 1934 and continue to use the property for several weeks every summer.In 2012, Allan Hemphill, his son Brian, and a small group of family friends purchased the property from the Boy Scouts. The Hemphill family has been care taking Camp Noyo for over 60 years. We decieded to open the property to the public in 2015 for camping in the summer.

Surrounded by cooperate timberland, it feels like there are no neighbors! There is not a house in sight but the the ridge views seem to go on forever!
- There is a simple latrine at each site. A full bath house with a flush toilet and hot shower is available next to the main house. A water spigot is attached to the main house.
- Spare camping supplies are available by the bath house if you forget something! Ask ahead if you need to borrow a specific item.
More about the property: I built my home high upon a southern ridge. Watching the river of coastal fog flow in and out below me is one of the most wonderful views to behold! I have 30 acres of land to explore and camp upon in the surrounding redwood forest.
10 miles east are Montgomery Woods redwood preserve with GIANT trees, and a little farther, perhaps a mile is the famous Orr Hot Springs Resort. If you drive a half hour west from my land you will be in the coastal Mendocino village.
We are marijuana friendly!! Thus, we have created more of an adult oriented atmosphere.

I arrived to Cosmo’s super late after a long day going up the coast. It was a last minute book that morning, if I remember right - my campsite had fallen through. His directions were spot on, and very kindly he stayed up to take me to my site and help me get set up, even going so far as to light me a fire. His property was easily navigable in the dark, and my two wheel drive made it fine. We talked for a while - what a cool guy. He was able to give me recommendations from a friend of what to do during the next legs of my trip, which was great and really did make a difference for the rest of my week. I cooked my dinner and sat stunned looking at some of the best stargazing I’ve had in a long time.When I woke up I realized that I had been sleeping next to a mountainside view - this was site 3. Talk about the best surprise I’ve gotten in a while unzipping a tent. The clouds were gathered in the valley and as I ate breakfast I got to watch the sun slowly clear then out. It was unbelievable.Before I left, Cosmo let me use his indoor solar-heated shower and told me all about his projects to build his own home and roads and move towards a more sustainable future. Overall this is really the best of what I imagine hipcamp has to offer - kind property owners & unique individuals who care about their guests while also allowing them to have their own experience. If I’m ever near Mendocino I will gladly make the trip inland to stay at his property again."

Additionally, there are two secluded cabins set back with views of Hull Mt. each with one king bed, restroom, outdoor cooking facilities and porch. All cabins have access to coin operated hot showers. we are a bring your own bedding facility, All cabin guests need to bring their own linens and pillows as there is no linen service in the area. Cabins are booked for weekly stays Saturday to Saturday from mid June thru mid August. Nightly stays are available early season, late season or if we have openings two weeks out from arrival date during high season.

Camping at it’s best! We offer 38 campsites plus 1 RV full hook-up (30amp) site, each with its own fire pit, table and water. The campsites are nestled in a beautiful natural setting of oaks and pines, and are spread out all around the grounds with many lakefront and lake view sites. Some sit back with more privacy, but all sites offer easy access to the lake. RVs and trailers are welcome and many sites are roomy enough to back right in. We follow the same weekly booking for most of our camps during high season, and do nightly early and late season. All camps are by reservation, so please call for availability.

Situated on the edge of the Mendocino National Wilderness this incredible gathering spot has many amenities included. There are two ponds on the property many hiking biking roads and trail’s, lovely landscaping and large open areas for camping.
Included with the main camp is your own two story mountain cabana that can easily sleep 8-10 people comfortably. Under the living quarters is a fully stocked game room with cable bar and full sized pool table. The covered patio deck is perfect for lounging and and letting the breeze blow through. There is a nice outdoor BBQ zone with fully stocked indoor kitchen at arms reach as well.
Nearby are the horseshoe pits and flat areas for tent camping. There is ample parking for your quads trailers and other toys.
The driveway is rough for the first half and smooths out nicely once on the property.
Be advised an SUV or similar is recommended although the owners would drive their Mercedes and other regular passenger cars up the 2.0 mile driveway to the retreat.

The rustic cabin in the woods outside Mendocino was exactly the kind of peaceful getaway I was hoping for. The cabin itself is simple, cozy, and full of character—wood walls, a sturdy little wood burning stove that kept the space warm at night, and big windows with beautiful tree views in every direction. I also appreciated the fresh spring water on site—I was able to fill my camper easily, which was a huge plus.
There are scenic views all around the property, and some fun, quirky touches too. Vintage buses, old motorcycles hanging in the trees, and other funky art pieces make wandering the land feel like a little adventure of its own. It’s a place with personality, and you can tell the host has put a lot of heart into it.
Speaking of the host—super kind, welcoming, and genuinely happy to share his land. He gave great recommendations and made me feel right at home without being intrusive.
If you’re looking for a peaceful, off-the-grid-feeling stay with charm, creativity, and forest magic, this spot is perfect. I’d absolutely stay here again.

What a fantastic stay! From the moment we arrived, James was incredibly helpful and welcoming. He met us at the road, guided us in, and provided a radio so we could stay in touch with him and the host, Linda throughout our visit—which made us feel safe and supported, especially while navigating the area or heading out on hikes without cell service.
The setting was peaceful and breathtaking. Absolute silence at night, with stunning views. Watching the sunset and sunrise from the deck was magical, and the bed was one of the most comfortable we’ve ever slept on—seriously, we slept like rocks.
We loved the outdoor space, especially the charming outdoor sink setup. It added to the rustic charm without sacrificing comfort. The main house is just up the hill—close enough in case we needed something, but still far enough to feel totally private and remote.
And a special shoutout to Buddy the dog! He popped by now and then to check on us, which we appreciated. He felt like a friendly guardian making sure everything was good in our little corner of the woods.
Highly recommend if you’re looking for peace, comfort, and just the right amount of adventure. We’d come back in a heartbeat!

We thoroughly enjoyed our one-night stay at Hanalee. The views overlooking the valley floor were absolutely breathtaking—truly million-dollar scenery. The accommodations were comfortable and well-appointed, with beautiful decks and plenty of cozy spots to relax and unwind.
We loved the extra touches like the picnic table, horseshoe pit, and tranquil pond. The surrounding trails were perfect for hiking and exploring nature. In the evening, we had a fantastic bonfire under the stars, and the stargazing was unforgettable.
Waking up to the sunrise from the deck, coffee in hand, was the perfect way to start the day. A truly special place—we only wish we could’ve stayed longer.

Have stayed here many times over the last decade. The group campgrounds/cabins are an affordable and delightful stay. All grounds are well kept. Showers are hot and bathrooms are locked! Right on the river but no view from campsites.

I have been camping at Letts Lake for 20 years and going up there last weekend was tough. It was the first time it's been opened since the Ranch/Mendocino Complex fire in 2018. Even though I knew it was burned badly, I was still shocked to see it in person. The trees in the campgrounds were mostly saved but the ones around the lake didn't fare so well. The lake was still clear, refreshing and beautiful.

There are 6 spacious sites here. There is one toilet which was clean except for a bunch of flies inside. There is no water/garbage service. The growth around the sites are not well maintained but the tables & fire rings are in good condition. There was also lots of chopped wood. The area is very peaceful & we only saw one truck, which did not stop, the several hours we were there. We did not get a good vibe here, I'm not one of those people that "feels peoples energy" or anything... it just felt uneasy despite the visual peacefulness. We heard some crazy noises which we now realize was probably mountain lions. Our dog was also very uneasy and on alert, it just felt off so we packed up and moved on rather than stay the night.

We arrived Friday night and all the sites were taken so we ended up going rogue and camping on a nearby hill. It ended up being a great decision as the campground was quite loud with all the bikers. We walked to Letts lake, which is still closed, not sure if because of the fire or covid, but we walked around the lake and saw river otters in the lake!! The temp was perfect for a quick dip too! The next day we did a hike at the deafy glade trailhead. It was beautiful, lots of burned trees and mosquitos, but worth it for the amazing view after only 1 hour of hiking.

This campground took some time to get to because the main road was washed out, but we were the only people there for the whole Labor Day weekend. The mosquitos and flies were annoying, but the campground was beautiful and the lake/pond was very picturesque.

So I tried to find my way there last year and almost got my giant 4x4 trapped in a creek that was crossing the road in! It's a fairly rigorous National Forest road...if you aren't used to backcountry driving, make sure you bring a 4wd with high clearance...and make sure you check the ranger station at the park entrance to check road closures (I didn't, hence the creek scare.) I ended up driving all the way back home after that, finding no camping at nearby Lake Mendocino! Learn from my stupid mistakes :D

While Lett's lake is quite picturesque, the drive there from SF is 3.5 hours IF you don't hit traffic or stop to get gas or something to eat. Coupled with the fact that you can't make reservations and potentially not getting a spot, it's tough to commit to making the trip. The nearest store is 45 minutes away and is a small general store. You can get ice and water if you don't have enough. Someone said there was blue-green algae in the lake this year. Not sure if that's true or not but I did hear that from another camper.

This place is cool if you can snag a spot. The best tip is to pull into the fist open spot you see because they fill up fast on the weekends.
Wake up early and take a short 1.2 mile hike around the lake. There are a few rope swings here and there so go find them. The sites on the lake are nice, but there are a few loops so keep your eye out for a spot.
The vault toilets were a little smelly and hopefully your spot isn't super close to one. It's $12 per night. There are no motorized boats allowed on the lake.

Hotspot for OHVs so if you're seeking a backcountry vibe probably not the best since you're in the middle of a well developed OHV network. Nice warm campground on the ridge, definitely a favorite for early season camping.

Nice campsites, stayed here late spring and had still had some snow on the ground. Probably one of the more "modernized" campgrounds I have seen here.

Beautiful location above the Eel River right on the edge of the Mendocino National Forrest. I would stay here to break up a drive but consider there to be nicer more secluded campsites deeper in the forrest.

Lett's Lake is a beautiful lake chuck full of feisty largemouth bass right on the edge of the Mendocino National Forrest (MNF). Spring camping is nice, bug free, though too cold to swim, and summer camping though more buggy with mosquitos and yellow jackets lends itself to the full lakefront camping experience. My favorite trip is to enter MNF from stonyford, spend 2 nights at Lett's Lake with my little inflatable boat, rod, and soft plastics, then drive out on m10 across bear creek to M1 then down to Upper Lake for lunch at the Blue Wing Saloon.

As far as developed campgrounds go, Bear Creek is pretty secluded. There are about 16 well dispersed sites, two vault toilets, and no garbage service or running water (although you could filter / boil water from the creek). There is no phone signal and you have to cross a creek to get to the campground. 4WD high clearance vehicles recommended. A decent rain would likely render the creek / road impassible. Our site had two picnic tables, was isolated from the other sites, had lots of shade, and was right on the creek. A fine retreat from the Mendocino heat. The area is popular with OHV recreation, so don't expect 100% silence. The Snow Mountain Wilderness and accompanying trailhead is also nearby.

It was a small nook of campsites in the middle of the forest.
Quiet, and very beautiful. Wish I could have stayed longer.

Great spot! We originally planned on camping at Letts Lake, but found the CG way too crowded and cramped. Drove just a few miles to Mill Valley to find a quiet spacious spot. Spent 2 fun and sun filled days at the lake and had a peaceful spot to relax after.

Cheap and pretty remote, you can bring a large loud group here and have the valley pretty much to yourself. It gets really hot and sunny during summer days, so head to much cooler Lett's Lake during the daytime. There IS a working drinking water spigot

There are a ton of amazing trails here for OHV, quads, dirt bikes, etc. Some of the campgrounds I drove through seemed like they wouldn't be as fun if you weren't partaking in the fun, mostly filled with RV trailers towing bikes etc.

There is an amazing geological formation called the Crabtree Hot Springs, which, unfortunately is closed to the public… (Sorry to get your hopes up)

This is a camper’s heaven! You’ll definitely feel at peace being away from huge crowds and road noise. How good does it feel to hear nothing but nature? Especially if you’re camping in the backcountry (we recommend it).
