Reconnect with nature, learn homesteading skills, and unwind by the river—just minutes from Montgomery Woods and an hour from the majestic Mendocino Coast. Welcome to Marggie’s Sanctuary Farm, a peaceful off-grid homestead nestled in the Redwood Forest along the upper fork of Big River in Northern California. Surrounded by swimming holes, hiking trails, and wild beauty, this special land is an invitation to slow down, get your hands in the soil, and learn the timeless rhythms of nature. We are an off-grid homestead about 15~20 minutes out of service range. No cell phone reception makes space for deep relaxation and presence amongst the sights and sounds of the forest. Wake up to birdsongs, goats calling, and fresh country air. Our farm is very dark at night, which means the stargazing is otherworldy. With that said, please come prepared with headlamps or flashlights to safely find your way around after dark. No candles or open flames are permitted on the property. Here at Sanctuary Farm you will find an array of campsites from private cozy cabins, to tent spots nestled among the trees. Fun activities nearby include: -Montgomery Redwoods State Park -Orr Hot Springs (Be sure to book a day pass in advance!) -Mendocino Coast (1 hour away) Marggie has over 60 years of farming and gardening experience—and she loves to share it! Guests can seasonally explore: -Lush gardens and fruit orchards -Friendly goats, chickens, ducks, dogs, and cats (plus the occasional wild visitor!) -Hands-on opportunities to milk goats, make cheese, gather eggs (Spring-Fall) Learn & Create Want to take home more than memories? Marggie offers *seasonal*, hands-on learning in: Organic gardening: composting, planting, seed saving, mulching Preserving the harvest: canning, drying, fermenting, freezing Wild food foraging: mushrooms, sea salt, seaweed, bay nuts Artisanal skills: basket weaving, wool felting, loom weaving, bread baking, salve making, fire cider, and kimchi ~ Whether you’re here to camp under the stars, dip in the river, or dive deep into homesteading life, you’ll leave grounded, inspired, and full of good food and stories. 📅 Now booking year-round! Accomodations: -Loft with a queen size bed -Open downstairs space with another queen size bed - Rustic camp kitchen: Open-air seating area. Camp stove, cups, plates, pans and cutlery. -Private bathroom: Sink, compost toilet, and shared outdoor shower. - River swimming hole access - Stargazing on the front deck Simple and serene, the Riverside Cabin is where rustic charm meets warm comfort.

There is an Outhouse available, Shared Outdoor shower, River swimming hole, and plenty of space to unwind and explore.

WORST Experience Ever - Beware

The photos and listing are extremely misleading!! The property was anything but a sanctuary as it was cluttered with wires, tarps, stuffed animals, and junk. Our hearts sunk upon arrival after realizing the actual state of the listing. The River Cabin itself was covered in dust, cobwebs, and even human hair making it uninhabitable. There was no access to any river or swimming hole from the property. There is no fridge even though a fridge is listed and host Marggie offered us a personal size cooler with no ice after informing us there is no fridge. Note that this property is remote and no wifi/service within at least 30min so not having refrigeration for food for our four day stay was obviously problematic. There is absolutely no privacy as the host's cabin is adjacent to the river cabin and is essentially the same porch. Host has 3 dogs, one of which continually jumped on us, and we were asked to double latch gate every time we went in and out so the dogs wouldn't escape. We both have dogs and kids at home and were looking forward to a break from our responsibilities at home - not having to worry about host's pets. Due to the remote location, the host seems to rely on guests being trapped up there and having to tough it out, since there's no wifi or way to figure out alternative accommodations. First time using HIpCamp and Extremely disappointed - seeking full refund since we couldn't even stay due to how unkempt it was.

We had such an incredible stay with Marggie. The farm is so lovely and she gave us a full tour. The cabin is great and has so much character, very comfortable beds as well. We’d love to come back and take some of her workshops.

Riverside Cabin
We had such a magical stay at Sanctuary Farm. Marggie is the best host! She taught our son so much about the garden, the animals, and homesteading, and he absolutely adores her. The room was just perfect, cozy, thoughtful, exactly what we hoped for. This is the kind of place that stays with you, and we left already planning our return! I would recommend at least a night, but if you can, stay longer. We highly recommend you do the add ons! We did the goat cheese and it was so much fun and tasted amazing!!

Riverside Cabin
Our family had an amazing time at Sanctuary Farm! The space was very comfortable with lots of interesting things to see and do. Our kids loved petting the farm dogs and learning to milk a goat, and we loved getting to relax and read some of awesome books in the cabin.

Marggie's Sanctuary Farm is a beautiful haven. It's so cool to see the farm built and operating in harmony with its surroundings and Marggie's love and devotion to her animals and organic crops is inspiring. We loved our stay at the Riverside Cabin. We had everything we needed and really enjoyed the fresh eggs from the farm, roasting our veggies on the bonfire and tours of the place with Marggie and her WWOOFers! So grateful for our stay and would love to come back!

Marggie was so thoughtful—she left some toys and books out for my four year old child. The cabin is beautiful and really well built, with all the essential amenities to make a simple meal. The outdoor shower was really nice with hot water! We saw a deer and baby fawn on the drive in. Her dogs are also very sweet. We enjoyed it! Thank you!

Marggie is very nice and the property is beautiful. Her dogs and cats are extremely sweet and friendly. The riverside cabin was beautiful and the outdoor kitchen and bathroom attached to it is very nice, it makes the whole set up a great private space. Perfect balance of cozy cabin and camping. My wife and I had a day pass at Orr Hot Springs and Marggie’s cabin was the perfect quiet place to come home to. Thank you Marggie we will be back!

Magic cabin under the stars

We had an INCREDIBLE time at Marggie's hipcamp, right next to the beautiful Montgomery Woods! The place is truly magical. We met the goats, gathered around the firepit, and laid back on the patio to survey the incredible stars. Marggie is a warm host, who knows this forest so well, and her love for this place and all its critters shines through. The home-made cheese is delicious, and the cabin feels like a magic fairy home. PSA: PLEASE WATCH FOR NEWTS CROSSING THE ROAD AS YOU DRIVE and move them out of the way if it is safe to do so <3 <3

What an incredible place to say! Marggie is very responsive and has everything ready for you. Would highly recommend this place to anyone. A heads up that there is no refrigeration, so consider that when packing food.

Sanctuary Cabin in the Redwoods

We really enjoyed our stay, Sanctuary Farm is a magical place! The Riverside Cabin is a sanctuary in itself and the host is wonderful. We really enjoyed meeting all her sweet animal friends and had the most relaxing time. It’s really great that it’s so close to Orr Hot Springs as well. Thank you Marggie for everything 🙏 We hope to come back soon!
