Situated on top of a ridge with expansive redwood forest and coastal views, the Audrey Edna Cabin provides a completely private gathering place and destination for visitors with reservations. The cabin has spectacular views of forest, sky, ocean and the Butano ridgeline. It's a short hike to 8000+ acres of county parkland where you can hike, bike and ride horses (though please note, there are no facilities for horse boarding at the cabin.) The cabin is located at Alpine Ranch, a property adjacent to Sam McDonald County Park that was protected by Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST).
Whether you are looking for an active experience or just want to relax in a peaceful, remote setting, there's something here for everyone.
This is a rustic hike-in cabin designed for a introductory pack-in experience. Bedding is not provided. It is about a 1.7-mile hike on a rolling dirt road from the Sam McDonald County Park parking lot, with about 650 feet of elevation gain. Most hikers can reach the cabin in an hour or less. Guests should plan to arrive at least 2 hours before sunset, and pack water and flashlights or headlamps. Guests with limited mobility, please contact us for information regarding accommodations that will allow you to access this shared resource.
*A note about reservation availability: On the weekends, POST offers priority reservations for the cabin to our partners at the San Mateo County Health Department and Park Rx to provide patients with equitable access to the benefits of nature. Occasionally, we have last-minute public weekend reservation availability due to cancellations. The cabin is reservable up to 3 months in advance, on a rolling basis.

Property History:
At one time, the ridge of the Santa Cruz Mountains was a thriving center for trade between tribes of the coast and the bay, which we still find evidence of today in cultural sites and artifacts throughout the region. Native people have cared for this land since time immemorial, including the local Muwekma and Ramaytush Ohlone who are still active in the area today. This property specifically is host to a tributary to one of just a handful of waterways that support salmonids in this region, which are a species of tremendous importance to native people.
Over 1000 acres here were eventually purchased by entrepreneur Ridgeway Rowley, who built a home on the ranch in the 1880s as part of an unsuccessful wedding proposal to Fannie Page, daughter of a local mill owner (ever heard of Page Mill Road?) After being rejected by Fannie, Rowley operated the ranch for a decade in conjunction with his work as District Attorney and publisher of the Palo Alto Weekly, before eventually returning to his hometown of Cortland, NY, where he lived as a bachelor until his death. Over the course of the 20th century, the ranch was divided, some parts of which became Pescadero Creek County Park. POST purchased the 350 acre home property, now called Alpine Ranch, in 2012 through our Heart of the Redwoods campaign, an initiative to protect 20,000 acres of Redwoods in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Alpine Ranch borders Pescadero Creek County Park and Sam McDonald County Park, adding to the area’s protected open space and containing more than a mile of tributaries to Pescadero Creek, which flows year-round and is a major spawning stream for steelhead trout.
The Audrey Edna Cabin at Alpine Ranch is situated at one of the property's most scenic overlooks. The cabin was built in the early 1900's, and completely reconstructed up to modern building codes by POST in 2018 so that all could enjoy this special place.

This 60 acre property is located approximately 3 miles east of San Gregorio Beach in the San Gregorio area. There is no home here, only a travel trailer on the Upper Meadow. It is very peaceful, quiet and beautiful throughout the seasons.
We are 5 minutes away from the San Gregorio General Store and cafe and 20 minutes from Alice's Restaurant. We have great cell coverage for Verizon, AT&T and Visible. Experience shows that T-Mobile does not work here and I don't know about the other internet providers.
There are four campsites, each with easy 4WD access. Two of the sites offer total isolation with amazing views while the third site, while in a nice setting, is more useful for a quick overnight stay with no views of the ocean or canyon. Please note that five easy-going cows (no bulls) reside on this property.
Dear winter and spring campers, please consider using "Sensible Weather" for your trip protection in the event of heavy rain or even high temperatures in the summer and fall. I have not used this insurance feature but the description makes it look worth considering, available when reserving on Hipcamp.

Hello all! If you're looking for some glamping with creature comforts, while just being 10 minutes away from restaurants. This is the place for you. We are a 5 acre property and home surrounded by tall redwood and oak trees. Very green and lots of shade. These are the amenities/facilities you will have free access to: Pool, Pool chairs and umbrellas, Deck area with sunset view, trampolines (kids only), and hammocks.
Our check in window is strict: 3-6pm. Only later check in is allowed if discussed previously with host.
There is no cooking allowed by or at any of the common areas due to flies and critters. Cooking and eating is only allowed by your sites and not in any common areas: Hammocks, Trampolines, Pool Area, tables, sink, and deck please follow this rule because we want to prevent our shared areas to be fly and bug infested. We are still working on ridding the flies and cleaning. (please try to bring prepackaged food or something easy. If anything you can drive 10 minutes to nearby food and grocery).
THERE IS A 2-3 MINUTE HIKE TO THE CAMPSITES 1-5!
Poolside campsites are closer to the parking and are bigger.
This property is my home that I live in with my 2 kids. It is a rustic and homey vibe, definitely not a hotel. We want you to come knowing what to expect. Our property offers a pool and trampolines for the kids. We have a deck patio area that overlooks an amazing view of the redwood forest. Most of our guests are those that come from foreign countries and they all LOVE the property. I love leaving a great impression of our area.

Each tent is perched on a sturdy wooden platform and features a fully furnished deck, providing a cozy space to relax and soak in the breathtaking ocean (Half Moon Bay views) and forest views (Kings Mountain).
All tents include a mini fridge and a stove, ideal for light cooking, intimate fireside storytelling, and warmth during cool days.
We suggest you bring easy-to-prep food, drinks, warm clothes, hiking shoes, and a beanie, as it can get chilly without notice. Your designated parking space is a 6-minute walk from the campsite (downhill on arrival, then back uphill (steep) in the forest), so we recommend traveling light.
Our Farm, Animals & Presence
Fancy Camp shares the property with our small working farm, so you’re guaranteed to meet a few of our residents during your stay. You may also see us tending to the land and animals throughout the day—we always try to do so respectfully and as discreetly as possible.
Messy & Salma, two of our dogs, keep watch over the chickens and goats. If you hear them barking at night, they’re simply doing their job protecting the land and its animals. Our chickens also get an early start, so they may occasionally provide your natural morning alarm.
Our friendly goats roam the property during the day and may wander over for pets and nuzzles. They’re gentle and curious, but please don’t feed them or invite them inside your tent. The same goes for our cats and other dogs, no matter how convincing they may be!
If you ever need assistance with any of the animals, please reach out to us before 8:00 pm.
Recharge from the day with a hot shower. Grab your fresh towels from your tent and go to your outdoor allocated bathhouses, where you’ll find an indoor shower and well-appointed restrooms. They are nicely lit and stocked with bath products.
A sink area is available for dish clean-up, a bbq/picnic area, fire pit & cedar wood hot tub (to be booked separately).
KM is famous for its hiking and biking trails nestled amongst the redwoods. The closest is a 15-minute walk from our campsite, and others are within a 15-minute car ride.

We had such a wonderful time at this campsite! A huge thank you to Mark and Karen for being so patient, kind, and accommodating throughout all of our planning. We were a large group, and we had been communicating and planning this trip for about a month. They were incredibly helpful in accommodating our needs, especially with the number of cars and tents we were bringing.
We also loved having the farm right there. Being able to pick fresh vegetables and cook with them was such a special experience! The scenery was absolutely beautiful, and the peaceful, quiet surroundings made it the perfect place for our group to relax, bond, and spend hours talking and enjoying each other’s company.
We all loved the chickens and the rooster, the Wallace! We said hello to Wallace, and he was such a beautiful and smart guy. 😊

Tent camping here was the most magical combination of glamping and wilderness. ✨ From the moment we arrived, being surrounded by the sweetest, friendliest animals made it feel like our own little hidden world in the woods. So peaceful, homey, and safe.
Soaking in the hot tub surrounded by incredible views felt unreal, and ending the night under the trees and stars with the wood-burning stove keeping our tent warm and cozy made the whole experience unforgettable. It truly felt like we had escaped into a little fairytale for the weekend.
Thank you so much to Sana and William for being incredibly warm and welcoming and making this beautiful place feel like home. This is absolutely a must-see, must-do experience, and we can’t wait to come back. 🌲✨

Weekend Trip to Quail Ridge Farm
This was my first Hipcamp experience and it did not disappoint. The location was very easy to access, and the views were AMAZING!!! The campsites were spread out providing enough privacy. The Airstream was perfect and had everything I needed. Good size bed which was comfortable, nice little sink and stove, toilet and shower, and a nice dining area with bench seating. The RV outside had an overhang providing good shade. The hosts were kind enough to provide a propane firepit, two camping chairs, a large table bench, and a charcoal grill. The camping spot had a hiking trail right in front of it, which was nice to trek.
Overall, it was a great experience and hosts were beyond accommodating. Would love to come back very soon!

Doug and Denise were incredible hosts! Doug was especially generous with his time, showing our kids around the ranch and making them feel so welcome. We also really enjoyed a hike down to the creek.
The campsite itself was exactly what we were looking for: peaceful, private, and very secluded from both the main house and the other campsite on the property. It felt like we had our own little corner of the ranch.
We had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend this property to other Hipcampers!

This is easily one of my experiences using Hipcamp. The site has beautiful views over Pescadero all the way out to the ocean, has a beautiful garden, and a wonderful setup of picnic tables, a gas burner, and room to cook.
Mark and Karen were also incredibly kind, welcoming, and accommodating which made us feel so taken care of and at ease. Truly 5 stars

Weekend Trip to Double Bear
I loved Double Bear. Mathilda was a super host answering all my questions in advance and then checking- in to ask if we needed anything. The Yurt Bear Hollow was spectacular. So clean! Everything impeccable! Same for bathrooms and kitchen. The dirt road is challenging first, but doable and after we did a trip to a state park and came back, it felt so much easier the second time. It is a small price to pay to be so close to Los Gatos but so immersed in the wilderness. This place has the perfect balance of rustic setting but with all the basic comforts that makes a quick weekend trip easy or a long term comfortable. The wifi worked very well. We enjoyed the fire pit and the jacuzzi. It was my first time in the area so we travelled to Big Basin state park but it is still impacted from the last fire so we went to Henry Cowell state park which was much nicer. I am recommending this place to all my friends and I hope I can come back soon. Next time, I would like to bring a great book and hang out more in the property and explore the creek. Such a great place to just relax and be.

About
Experience a sense of wonder as you swap Silicon Valley for a scenic valley with an ancient forest of coast redwoods. This 2,800-acre park features 18 miles of hiking trails. As you walk along, keep an eye out for bubbling brooks, notice the soft moss on the trees, and take in gorgeous green ferns and huckleberries. Stop and get your feet wet at one of the waterfalls along Fall Creek or Pescadero Creek. Settle into one of the park’s 55 family campsites with room for up to eight people, or select one of four group campsites.
Notable campgrounds
- Best for large groups: Circle Group Camp can accommodate 50 people with tents only.
- Best for day hikers: Huckleberry Campground offers four hike-and-bike campsites.
- Best for backpackers: Slate Creek Trail Camp is part of a network of backcountry trails.
Tips for snagging a campsite
- Online reservations are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Reservations can be made six months in advance online or by phone.
- Campsites at Huckleberry Campground are first-come, first-served.
- Check-in begins at 2pm and check-out time is noon for all family and group sites.
- Reservations are required for Slate Creek Trail Camp’s six sites, each of which are limited to six backpackers. No dispersed camping is permitted in the backcountry.
- If the park closes due to inclement weather, campers may be relocated or have the option to receive a full refund from the day of evacuation.
When to go
Be prepared for coastal fog that feeds the redwoods, even during summer when leopard lilies are in bloom. Weather is changeable and often wet, as the park receives 40 to 60 inches of rain per year. Campsites can typically be reserved from late spring through mid-autumn, but during fall or winter, severe weather or drought can close the park, which is typically open for day use from 6am to sunset during this time.
Know before you go
- Only one family campsite is wheelchair accessible, and four require a short walk from parking. No family campsites have RV hookups.
- Fires are not permitted at Slate Creek Trail Camp, but backpacking stoves are allowed. Water must be packed in or purified from nearby Slate Creek.
- Showers and restrooms may close due to severe drought conditions.
- Dogs must be leashed and are only allowed in campsites and picnic areas and on paved roads.
- Maintain a “crumb clean” area to protect the marbled murrelet, an endangered seabird that nests in the forest canopy.

Easily one of my favorite camp spots of all time... we arrived on a Monday and stayed for three days and we were virtually alone in the camp. Misty foggy mornings and amazing hikes through the ancient redwoods were unforgettable. A short trip to Pescadero is very much worth it, as is traveling down to the beaches just 20 or so minutes away. I could literally live here forever. 10/10

We decided to take our almost 2 year old and our dog camping for the first time and come to Portola Redwoods. We were lucky and found a Friday night opening at site 46 just a few days ahead of time.
The spot was nice - the trees are beautiful and the site is very large. While I wouldn't call it secluded - it didn't feel too close to the neighbors either. It was very hot during our stay so the shade was much appreciated.
It did get pretty noisy at times with other families but we weren't complaining having a toddler ourselves. Bug spray is also a must in the evenings. Also note that you can't take your dog on any of the trails. Overall though a great stay and definitely recommended!

We had a great time in the Ravine group camp site. So shaded and lovely. Only downside was that the walk to the bathroom was a little treacherous after a recent rain and washed out some of the slope down. Not bad during the day, but at night when you are groggy, not so great. Otherwise the site was great with lots of spots for tents. It was April and a few trees had been felled on the site which took up a couple of our tent spots, we could not have put the full 25 people on the site, but luckily we didn't need that. We loved this site. This is a great getaway.

We were at site 42, which felt nice and private. There is lots of shade, and a number of lovely hiking trails close by (Eat it, Muir Woods!) We went in April and it was COLD overnight! 40 degrees... bring your wool socks! Also, lots of kids around.

We've camped at the Circle and Point group camps here for the last 3 years. Buggy at dusk, animals don't seem bad (except for those Stellar Jays!) Great hikes for all ability levels, great Ranger and Naturalist programs for families and the river is great too!

We decided to test the waters and take our dog on his first camping trip to Portola Redwoods SP. We were in campsite 48, which seemed a bit bigger than the other sites and also more secluded. It's great if you have dogs because of the natural redwood barriers!
