Weston Pass Hut is located on the first road that was built to bring people into Lake County and originally the road was a toll road. The property was a mining claim and there are still some remnants of mining activity that occurred over a century ago. A group of about six people and many volunteers spent six years building the hut. It is completely off of the grid. The beams used to construct the hut are from locally harvested trees and we milled them ourselves. Many other materials are recycled or obtained with a priority placed on sustainability.We offer backcountry lodging at the top of Weston Pass near Leadville, Colorado. Within a 2.5 hour drive from most locations in the Denver Metropolitan Area, Weston Pass Hut is accessible while offering wilderness seclusion. The hut is generally accessible with high-clearance 4-wheel drive vehicles during the summer. But, the hut provides a true wilderness experience that requires basic wilderness skills and a willingness to accept the challenges of such an adventure. We welcome backcountry skiers, wildlife enthusiasts, x-c motorcyclists, hikers, mountain bikers, and anyone else who enjoys the backcountry. The entire hut can be rented for $378 and it can host up to 12 people. There are four bedrooms, a shared kitchen, and great room. Guests will need to follow strict cleaning protocols to get the hut safe and sanitary for all visitors. At 11,950 feet, the hut boasts the highest elevation of any Colorado backcountry lodging of its kind. It faces an open valley with stunning views of Mount Holy Cross and the surrounding mountains. In the summer, visitors can access miles of hiking trails in wilderness frequented by elk, hawks, bears, moose, deer, and coyotes. In the winter, skiers can access terrain ranging from steep bowls that challenge seasoned skiers to mild slopes that invite beginners. The hut is suitable for diverse groups of users with varying backcountry experience. During much of the summer, guests can drive, hike, or bike to the hut from either Lake or Park county. Although we recommend high clearance vehicles, the unpaved roads on Weston Pass are well-maintained. During the winter, guests can access the hut on skis, snowshoes, snowmobiles, or snowcats. We built the hut to match its beautiful surrounding scenery. The hut features locally harvested and milled beams, and a unique tundra roof, The floor plan balances socializing and privacy by providing a large communal area and four private bedrooms. Cleaning and Sanitation Protocol: IN ORDER TO PROVIDE A SAFE, HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL OF OUR GUESTS, WE REQUEST THAT YOU FOLLOW THESE CLEANING GUIDELINES WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT THE HUT, AND THEN ALSO RIGHT BEFORE YOU LEAVE. - Using the sanitizing solution provided that is located on the kitchen counter, please wipe down the following: All doorknobs, window cranks, fireplace tools, fireplace handles, all horizonal surfaces including dining table, benches, and kitchen surfaces. Also wipe down the vinyl coverings on all the bedding, the toilet seats, and the knobs for the solar lights, the propane, and the propane stoves. - Please use the bleach provided in your rinse water when you wash dishes. The recommended amount is 2 tablespoons to each gallon of rinse water. It is best to let your dishes air dry before storing them. - Please bring your own pillows, books, games, and other forms of entertainment. We have removed all unnecessary objects that are difficult to sanitize. We are hoping that by providing the means to sanitize the hut, you will abide by these few guidelines so that you and the guests following you will stay healthy.

Totally exceeded expectations from the moment we pulled up to the last sunset with light rain and orange skies through the valley. The hut is well kept with ample fire wood and comfortable amenities that will quickly make the place feel like home. We had a great time! The hut was well stocked with wood, cookware, spices, etc. It was easy to access and make our way up the trail with the directions and trip guide that was provided to us. We made the hike from about 5 miles down the road, over 3-ish hours, during mid-December. We definitely want to return!

Such an awesome hut! Edwin provided lots of great information before our trip so we were well prepared with directions and all the info about the hut. The hut is very cozy, clean, and well-stocked with cooking essentials. Note: to keep the hut extra safe due to covid 19, some of the amenities mentioned in the packet were not provided, so be sure to check with Edwin beforehand and bring your own boardgames!

WOW! The hut is amazing! Our family had such a great time here. First, the location. The views are incredible. In the evening, a huge herd of elk came down the mountainside to graze, so beautiful to watch. At night, there are countless stars in the sky. The hut itself is clean, comfortable and super cozy when you get the wood burning stoves going. You bring the food, the hut has all the cooking supplies you'll need. The outhouses were clean, you even have a view from in there 😄 We had the pleasure of meeting Sonya, one of the owners, before we left. She was so sweet and shared a lot of background about the surrounding area and what went into building this special place. We definitely plan a return trip in the future!

Magic at 11,950ft

Staying at Weston Pass Hut is an incredible experience. Edwin, your Host, is responsive and helpful and the hut itself is truly amazing. We drove up to the hut and had it to ourselves for an entire weekend! The kitchen is stocked with everything you could ever need -- cooking oil, pots and pans, spices, etc. and the sleeping arrangements are super cozy. The wood stove is easy to work and the woodpile is incredibly well stocked, and the views from the enormous windows are breathtaking. I can't wait to come back!

Words fail to describe this place!!

On the top of the rockies at 12,000ft, in the wilderness with no civilization ever, herds of elks grazing around you, wild rabbits the size of a dog - all of this enjoyed from a luxury cabin! Words really fail to describe how amazing it was.

No wind, lots of sun and scenery

Another awesome trip up to Weston Pass. We had the hut to ourselves. The road was less hardpacked than expected which made for a fun ski down the next morning. All in all, a great night spent in one of the most scenic spots.

Magical & rewarding

Wow this was definitely a life highlight experience for me. I spent one night here with a friend and we had the hut to ourselves. It’s incredibly well stocked and the fire was easy to light and maintain. My favorite part was the epic sunrise. The snowshoe trek in took us 5 hours up and 2.5 hours on the way down. Advil helped a lot with altitude sickness! Amazing place- thank you!

You've got to experience this hut!

We absolutely loved our stay at the Weston Hut! We skied up starting around 9am and arrived a little before noon. The views from up there are incredible - huge panoramic windows - and the hut could not be more cozy or well outfitted. The two woods stoves crank out the heat and we loved cooking on the one in the kitchen. Due to the wind the skiing was a little slim but I had the time of my life ready and eating soup by the huge picture windows.

Fantastic stay all around. Edwin was extremely thorough and communicative with all pre-trip information. The trek in was no joke but we powered through in 4.5 hours (half hiking/half snowshoeing). The Hut was outfitted with everything you could imagine and so thoughtfully put together and cared for. We had a great time and look forward to returning for a warmer, summer stay :)

This hut is amazing. It has so many amenities and the view is unmatched. We were comfortable and met some great people to share the space with. The road is a rough drive in the shoulder seasons. Make sure you check the conditions and don't hesitate to walk the last 100 yrds or so. We would love to stay here again or skin up in the winter.

Second time coming to Weston Pass Hut -- first time as a winter trip. Such a rewarding hike up! A steady but moderate ~7-mile climb brings you to the hut, and snowshoeing up in the hard-packed snow wasn't bad at all. Would definitely recommend to anyone willing to brave the cold for a night well worth it. Just make sure to utilize the wood stove(s) to keep cozy. :)

Weston Pass Hut is a truly magical spot, and Ed is such a responsive and helpful Host. The Hosts have thought of everything you might ever want or need, from board games to kitchen utensils to books and so much more. It's a very isolated spot at the top of the pass (easy driving up from Fairplay in mid-summer; a bit rougher going towards Leadville down the other site) with spectacular views. Can't wait to go back!

I had an amazing winter weekend at the Weston Pass Hut. The beautifully designed hut comes stocked with everything you need to cook, games and books to relax, and numerous comfy rooms off the main living area. Situated above treeline, the views were just incredible, especially watching sunrise on the distant peaks through the panoramic windows. If you enjoy a good workout it's definitely worth skinning up to the hut, then you can eat all the things without guilt!
