1 night at Wild Rest Sanctuary

I recently stayed at Wild Rest Sanctuary upon entering the property I felt like it was transported into another world as a entered the forested road that provided a sense of wunderlust anticipating what was around the next curve. It felt like I was driving backwards in time into nature. I imagined Hansel and Gretel following the trail of bread Crumbs through the forest. Upon arriving at the meadow and first setting eyes on the amenities, I imagined a medieval camp prepared for a king seeing the majestic tents and yurt. Some of the highlights that I experienced during my stay were watching the stars at night smelling the floral scent wafting on the heavy summer air. It felt like I was living in poetry. Other highlights were the well-appointed tents prepared with all amenities needed bed, and bedding, storage, lighting fans. I especially loved how user-friendly the booking website was, as well as all of the items that you could choose from, such as kits for making s'mores and optional Wi-Fi, although that was the last thing I wanted as I was enjoying my escape from civilization. The shower facilities were excellent, especially for an off-the-grid sanctuary. The host Christina was so accommodating and inviting. You could definitely see her passion for her vision of this sanctuary and it showed in her desire to provide everything needed to each person's individual desires. She has that unique magnetic personality that can't help but leave you smiling.

I absolutely loved Milo Farm! We had an amazing time staying in the bunk house. All the goats and donkeys roaming about, we're all so friendly, and I loved getting to pet them!. We walked all over their trails. The staff was also very friendly! Trout was a fun guy to to talk with, and Moonflower was very sweet! Will definitely stay again!

Our campsite was very clean and easy to access. There were a lot of activities like tetherball and volleyball available. A very nice woman helped us in the shop and we had a great conversation with her. Overall, it was a great experience.

Beautiful location and really kind hosts! We loved the retro camper and amazing stocked lake. My kids and I had a wonderful time exploring the property, fishing, and we slept really well. 10/10 we would stop here again on our way through Kansas!

Weekend Trip to Fun Family Farm - Overview

Our family really enjoyed the visit. My girls are elementary age and it was a lot of fun to see the ducks from the school bus. They run up a ramp and jump into a pool! Super cute. Chickens, a pig, and gorgeous land all around. Lots of yard games like jenga, horse shoe, sand pit with digging tools. The owners are super neat people, very interesting to learn about the land, the history, and all the projects about! Lots to do, but also, time to sit and be still in the calm remote part of Kansas. We didn't leave their property other than a walmart trip-just 20 minutes away!

It's a perfect place to pull off and camp for the night. I was in a 26ft u haul with a 14 for trailer and was able to easily pull in and out. If we were coming back through we would stay again.

It was a great spread of land with lots of variety to suit anyones site preferences and available amenities plus a pool! Hosts were very friendly and welcoming would definitely recommend for an off the beaten path camping experience for the whole family!

4 nights at Geist Family Farms

Had we known there was such a place as the Geist Farm, we would never have wasted time camping at state parks or campgrounds. This place is as close to nature as you can ever find, without the nightly sounds of loud strangers around a campfire 20 yards away, slamming car doors in the middle of the night, car alarms at midnight, or sitting around an early morning campfire with dozens of other similar campfires in close proximity. There’s just one campsite here. It’s serene. It’s beautiful. They have mowed walking trails through the woods, have a well stocked pond of catfish (catch & release), a campfire area, plenty of room to set up your tarp shelter and tents, and a bathroom and shower not too far away. It’s as close to the perfect campsite as you can ever get. Most importantly, the Geists are kind consummate professionals. They make the perfect camping experience easy. Give their camping home-away-from-home a try. You will not regret it.

It was amazing very clean. Everyone was so nice. Helpful with anything. I definitely recommend basswood for anyone. Lots of fun things to do. There’s horseshoes cornhole, tetherball and much more swimming pool. Pickleball bounce ball for kids and anyone who wants to get on it playgrounds so much to do. We had an amazing time. It was great fun. We’ll definitely come back. Thank you.

I fell in love the minute we arrived, not only was the VW bus even cooler than the photos, it was parked next to a pasture with cows! Being a farm girl I couldn’t wait to go swimming in the pond and explore the property. I appreciated Jacques the dog keeping me company by being my swimming and walking companion. My daughter liked the comforts of the hippie bus (AC, electricity, lights, etc). Bill and Nancy were very welcoming, I can’t wait to go back!

Weekend Trip to Fun Family Farm - Overview

The farm is such a welcoming spot, and we felt very taken care of while tent camping. The outdoor shower and the outhouse have both been fashioned to give you total privacy, which is extra nice when you're living outside for a bit. My kids loved going down to the creek and the pond to hang out, and the pond felt amazing during the heat wave. This was our first camp of the summer and I'm so glad we tried this one out, definitely going into our rotation of places to stay!

Looking for a serene campsite not far from Kansas City? Look no further than Weston Bend State Park. Located just 30 minutes outside of the city, this park feels like a rural retreat, with a pastoral setting and scattered woodlands. Take in panoramic views of the Missouri River from the park’s scenic overlook, or explore the historic tobacco barn. Several hiking and biking trails take adventurers through the park’s varied terrains. The park’s large, private campsites are a big hit with visitors.

Notable Camping Spots

Best for camping with friends or family: Weston Bend Campground’s two family sites offer paired campsites with shared spaces and amenities.
Best for newbie RVers: Weston Bend Campground has two pull-thru sites that make it easy to park your rig.
Best for big rigs: Weston Bend Campground offers 50-amp electricity at select sites.

Tips for snagging a campsite

Campsites are reservable April 15 through October 31, with walk-up availability during the off season.
Weekend reservations require a two night stay, either Friday and Saturday or Saturday and Sunday.
Water and showers are offered April 15 through October 31, with a single potable water spigot accessible during the winter months.
Reservations may be made 12 months in advance and are recommended for holidays and weekends during the peak camping seasons.

When to go

When the weather is warm, this park is at its busiest, both for visitors enjoying the park and the access to KC. Summers can be hot and humid, when not relaxing in the shade. In spring, grab a jacket before you hit the trails since the weather can vary. In October, fall colors reach their peaks, promising epic views from the scenic overlook. The winter season is especially quiet. Watch for bald eagles visiting and nesting along the river. You may encounter freezing temps and precipitation, so go prepared.

Know before you go

This is a gated park. The gate locks at 9pm during the peak season and at 6pm during the off season. Campers must arrive before posted times to enter.
Eight hiking and biking trails take visitors through bottomland forests, along the river, and past historic sites. Bring your gear, and hit a trail—or several.
If you’ll be camping in the winter, bring binoculars to watch for bald eagles and other wildlife.
Head into Kansas City to explore the history, sports, restaurants, and museums of this vibrant city.

Very quiet campground. Showerhouse, laundry and restrooms all clean and well maintained. Good access to trails in the park and very close to historic Weston. Tent camping may be difficult as some sites don't have space to stake down more than a 2 person tent. Looked like very nice pads for campers and RVS at every site.
