Hideaway Valley Farm

· Newborough, Victoria
12 acres
4 sites
2 Vehicle/Tent
2 Caravan
Located in Gippsland Victoria, 7 kms to the town of Moe and a 5 minute drive from the M1. 12 acres to explore with a small dam at the very bottom of the property. There are mountain views and abundant wildlife in the area. It's a dairy farming area and there's a wide choice of local produce such as potatoes, berries and more. You'll find antique shops and a few galleries, pubs and restaurants nearby. On the property there are chickens, a kelpie and a horse together with wild birds and rabbits. There is a walking track with wallabies and other wildlife. The property is raised overlooking hills and paddocks. Blue Rock Lake is just 15 minutes drive away, where the water comes down from the mountains (gold was found there in the 1800s). you can fish and kayak and it's a great swimming area for kids. Sorry - dogs are not welcome. There are no amenities so you must be self-contained with own toilet or use of my composting toilet. There are plenty of sticks and wood around for starting a camp fire but not decent hardwood for campfires so you would need to BYO. No generators.

Fabricated memories
The experience was so great that I can't even remember being there. I remember my Uncle, Mark 'Chopper' Reed, telling me that the best memories are made when you don't remember what actually happened. This holiday must have been what he was talking about. I love virtual holidays too. Being as lazy as I am, going on a holiday that I didn't actually go on is mind blowingly genius. This is an untapped market and Hipcamp have nailed it. All those Gen Y/X mums and dads out there copping guilt trips that they are first and the kids are second at best, can take all the selfies of themselves for their Insta without those inconvenient kids. Bravo. Unfortunately we were unable to take our comfort dog trixie. She is allergic to mushrooms and identifies as a cat. So we had to put that on the application form, which was rejected. I'm sorry I couldn't tell you more but, what happens on Hipcamps stays on Hipcamps. Or so I'm told. I'm glad we found our way back from Vic High Country to SA Country. Don't do drugs kids.

Home away from home
Marianne’s property was like a home away from home. It was so homely and lively. My partner and I loved having Prince (the horse) roaming around saying good morning. The view was breathtaking and so open. Highly recommend for anyone who up for a getaway from technology and the Hustle and Bustle!

Hideaway Valley - By the Hay Shed
Everything was great and it was quiet and spacious for us but as a group camping there we had problems with water supply and a toilet, marienne was great and provided us with a bbq machine and water when needed.

Marianne is a kind and welcoming host. Prince the horse is also. It is a lovely place for a few nights rest away from 'the noise and bustle' of towns and traffic.

Hideaway Valley In The Paddock
Very very close to freeway
Marianne was very friendly and showed us to our site upon arrival. The instructions to find the property were very clear. Upon arrival, there was very limited flat space, as there were 3 other groups camping on the property. Several of us had to pitch our tents on slight slopes, which made for an iffy first night’s sleep. After the first night, all other groups left so Marianne said we were able to relocate to any other spot. We moved to the flat area near the hay shed, which was much better. I think it usually costs more to book this space, but to be honest I would not have paid any more than what we did for it. The main issue is the noise, as our tents were literally about 75m from the freeway. I saw the location when booking, but just didn’t realise how close it actually was. There is bushland in this space, but it doesn’t really do a lot to block out the noise. If you’re a light sleeper it may cause you some issues during the night. There were two basic camp toilets, but most members of our group were hesitant to use them. One is hidden in some thick scrub and surrounded loosely by a tarp which sticks to you as you’re sitting there. The other is in a more open space with some low tin propped up around it - you felt quite exposed if you used this one. We ended up driving in to Morwell most days to do a toilet trip and grab some coffees. If I came back here I would probably bring along an ensuite tent to chuck over one of the toilets. Plenty of firewood was available on the property, and each area had a clearly marked and established campfire space. There is a beautiful dog and a horse that free roam the property. Make sure you hide your rubbish in the night - we’re not sure if it was Prince (the horse) or the local wildlife, but we had someone rummaging through our rubbish each night and scattering it around our kitchen area.

Hideaway Valley In The Paddock
Disappointing reality...
This was quite a disappointing experience, the 'Paddock' was a long driveway with small clearings along side it. It is also located right between the M1 and a train line so there was constant background noise and light pollution. Our "campsite" options were either side of the driveway, one was on a slope, the other was nestled amongst bull ant nests. We opted for the slope, which made for an uncomfortable sleep. The toilet...was the product pictured in the ad, surrounded by strung up tarps, so be sure to bring toilet paper. The campfire was nice, and the horse they have was a highlight. Marianne the host was lovely. However - we were very VERY disappointed and felt the pictures didn't accurately depict the reality. We left first thing in the morning. Wishing we had read the other reviews saying as much...

Hideaway Valley In The Paddock
Marianne was a friendly host and replied to messages quickly. We stayed in the paddock sites - it’s a long narrow strip of land. Paddock sites are mostly sloping or on uneven land, the hay shed sites are flatter, however, both the hay shed and paddock sites are between the M1 and a train line. Note - there is constant loud road noise from the M1 which is very close so it wasn’t quite the serenity we were after. There are 2 bush toilet boxes, both with minimal privacy depending on the location of other campers. Children and adults loved Prince the horse. He was gentle and very friendly - he visits regularly and tries to get into eskies etc so lock everything away. We didn’t see any wildlife during our stay. We feel it’s expensive for what it is compared to others we have stayed at in the past.

Hideaway Valley In The Paddock
As nice as Marianne was, this place did not meet our expectations. The description failed to mention that the paddock was located between a noisy freeway and railway line. The composting toilet was clean but lacked any privacy screening apart from a few bushes. The view consisted mainly of poisoned bracken and woody shrubs. Overall poor value for money
