WILDLIFE: All manner of birdlife, wombats, possums, wallabies, kangaroos, foxes, deer, water rats, platypus and trout. We are happy to point you toward the best places to see deer feeding and wallowing, fox cubs playing and platypus swimming. FARM: This is a functioning farm; there are cows and calves most of the year. Our cows are very friendly and curious, and whilst we endeavour to keep them away from the campsite, sometimes they can't help themselves! EXPLORING: Our property joins onto State Forest, which can be explored at guests own risk, once you set foot off our property, Hipcamp no longer insures against injury etc. Within our property, we have bush tracks, animal trails and a trickling stream running through a beautiful, shallow gorge, where many adventures have been had! WATER PLAY: Our sites make the most of the creek flowing through the property; Creek Ford and Shady Shallows have the best water access and are especially great for kids. Please be mindful of children around water, an adult must be present at all times. CAMPFIRES: Who doesn't love a good campfire?! We have numerous fire pits at the campsites that are there to be used. No chainsaws are to be used on the property, as per Hipcamps insurance policy. There is plenty of wood around that you are welcome to collect yourselves, otherwise, we can supply loads of wood for $50 (enough for a campfire over a long weekend). SETTING UP CAMP: Please be mindful of where you choose to set up your camp. While we endeavour to keep the sites as safe as possible, some hazards include; trees and limbs falling, snakes and thistles. TRACK CONDITION The track to the campsite is bumpy and needs to be driven slowly, we have had a 22ft caravan towed by a 100 series set up here with no troubles. FIREARMS: as per Hipcamps insurance policy, no firearms are to be used on the property. We understand that State Forest attracts hunting, which we are all for, however, we ask you to respect our wishes and keep all firearms legally stored while you are on our property. Do speak to us for some local knowledge about great hunting spots! WHAT'S AROUND? BENAMBRA is a small, remote farming community 15 minutes from the property. There you will find a post office and general store, a small playground, public toilets and a great pub open for beautiful meals and cold beers Tues-Sun nights! OMEO is about 30 minutes from the property, where there is a state-of-the-art pump track, brand new mountain bike trails, two pubs, a bakery, plenty of cafes/eateries, Foodworks, hardware supplies and a camping and fishing shop. Nariel Creek Farm Stay

(37)
61km from Alpine National Park · 1 site · Tent, RV · Nariel Valley, VIC
On our property, we offer one private campsite with a large shelter making it ideal for all-weather group camping. While situated on a farm, it is a fenced-off space that can accommodate numerous vans. The Shelter is equipped with a wood heater, BBQ, stove, sink, tables, and some chairs. In addition, it has a basic shower and a toilet. The site has a designated cooking fire and a campfire. The Shelter has solar power providing lighting and charging facilities. All you need for a rustic home away from home! No mobile service or internet at the campsite ensures that you will switch off and relax. The Shelter is not a cabin but an open-air space for use by campers who are self-sufficient with bedding arrangements - swags, tents, camper trailers or vans. The creek running through the property provides great swimming and fishing (a 400m walk/drive from The Shelter), and the surrounding bush environment provides opportunities for walks, 4WD adventures, and wildlife spotting. More about the property... In 2017 we purchased our small farm in the Nariel Valley. It ticked all the boxes including a creek running through it and backing onto bushland. Now the dream has been realised and we are living in our new home, on our farm, with our small herd of Angus cows. We knew Nariel was special but we continue to discover its myriad of offerings for those who love the great outdoors. We look forward to sharing what we have discovered with our visitors. About Nariel: Wildlife abounds here, with wombats, emus, and kangaroos roaming the property and the list is endless for bird-watching enthusiasts. The remote location on a clear night provides a dark star-filled sky with shooting stars a common occurrence for those who are looking. Nariel Creek is a renowned trout fishing destination. The tracks around the Nariel Valley are a popular destination for motorbike and 4WD enthusiasts. Mount Pinnibar Track and Mount Gibbo are both accessed via Nariel. Several high country huts, all re-built since the January 2020 bushfires, are within an hour drive. Nariel was a thriving community during the gold rush, at that time there were 4 schools and a pub in the valley. Historical relics and gold can still be found. Panning in the creek and tributaries can be a rewarding pastime. The Nariel Creek provides a great spot to cool down in summer and is fast-flowing for a fun float through rapids. In spring the Nariel Valley is where you will find some beautiful wildflower sites. Nariel is home to the Nariel Folk Festival held over a week in late December – early January each year. And that is only in Nariel Valley! Corryong is the nearest township (population ~1350) and is 25 minutes away. The Murray River at Towong is 40 minutes away. Kayaking, push bike riding and many other pursuits are all on your doorstep if you can drag yourself away from Nariel.

Travellers come here to hike in Victoria’s highest mountains, go mountain biking or horseback riding, and to admire the wildflowers. The park contains a number of dedicated campsites with facilities plus dispersed bush camping—or free camping—is allowed throughout much of the park. An added bonus for horse-loving campers is that several campsites in the Howqua Hills Historic Area and the Bogong High Plains have horse yards–ideal for long-distance horse treks through the mountains.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for horseback riders: Fry’s Flat is one of several dedicated horse camping sites in the park.
  • Best for four-wheel drive travel: Pineapple Flat Camping Area is beside the King River.
  • Best for hikers: Cleve Cole Hut Camping Area is a stop on the way to Mt. Bogong.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. The only campsites in Alpine National Park that require booking and prepayment are those on the three-day Falls to Hotham Alpine Crossing hike. These should be booked and paid for online.
  2. Visitors camping with their horses should also book in advance, because only certain campsites have facilities for horses, and numbers are limited. Horse yards are free.

When to go

Alpine National Park can be a year-round destination but most hikers and campers will be more comfortable–and safer–visiting in summer. This is a high-altitude park that is around 6,500 feet (2,000 metres) in places, and snow can fall at any time of year. Visiting Alpine National Park in winter requires specialist backcountry skills, as snow and very cold temperatures are likely. Cross-country and downhill skiing is popular in this park though, so if you are experienced and well-equipped, you can camp here in winter, too. The season for camping with horses is from 1 November to 31 May.

Know before you go

  • High-country huts are dotted around the Alpine National Park and access to them is unrestricted but these are not a regular form of accommodation: visitors are asked to only use them in emergencies, and to carry a tent with them at all times.
  • Visit during the Alpine Discovery Days for a free guided tour of the Wallaces and Cope Hut precinct on the Bogong High Plains with a volunteer park guide.
