. These are unique camping spots along the Guadalupe River. I didn’t exactly understand how unique until I started getting feedback from my campers. The surrounding scenery will lower your blood pressure and do wonders to let you reconnect with nature. Sit back and close your eyes late in the evening and listen to all the wildlife talking to each other. There is faint traffic noise from 90A about a 1/3 of a mile away but it calms down after 7 or so. Currently no amenities but I am in the plans for some portable bathrooms. Please be prepared to cover all your bathroom and cooking needs. I do have some good clean well water from a faucet on the way into the campgrounds. Campfires are permitted. There is a convenience store (Diamond A) with clean bathrooms and a great bbq just 5 miles to the west on 90A and a Walmart and HEB 10 miles to the east on 90A. (Both Diamond A and Walmart sell fishing licenses if you need one. Dogs are allowed at sites 3 and 4 but not at 1 or 2 where my livestock guardian dogs have access to. No matter the size or temperament of your pets you are always expected to have them under your control at ALL times. I have very small livestock in the area frequently I am almost always on the property and try to have my phone with me while campers are on site, just let me know what you need and I will do what I can to accommodate you. There are wildflowers all over the property; especially in the spring time. We have seen deer grazing on the property and some travelers have found fossils and arrowheads (no guarantees of course). My son and I had a great time camping here! John and Nugget were wonderful hosts - very friendly, welcoming and helpful. John helped guide us to a spot that had enough vertical clearance for our RTT and helped us get our “camp kitchen” setup. It’s a beautiful property - we didn’t get to explore as much as we would have liked because it rained but we will definitely be back!

We really enjoyed our 4 day 3 night stay at Wild and Boujee right on the Colorado River. This spot is pretty secluded and offers a nice quite place to relax, fish, explore and unwind. The river sites, while 100% dry campsites offer ample shade and easy access to the water. We felt having a few more spots along the waters edge cleaned up a little would have allowed for more fishing opportunities where the water is a bit deeper. We definitely have this marked as a go to place close by our house for future trips. We really want to check this spot out during the summer. There is access to a water faucet close to the RV pads and Tent/Cabin which was nice for us to top off our small offgrid camper.

John’s place is in a great location—15 min to San Marcos and 35 min to Wimberley. He’s a quirky San Marcos local; super nice guy and very accommodating. The neighbors have farm animals and we enjoyed watching/listening to them. There’s only 1 spot that will fit an RV or bus, which is right on the fence line next to the neighbors. We enjoyed our stay.

What an amazing piece of property. It’s on a lazy bend of the Guadalupe and the owner lent us a John boat to take my son out fishing. There are numerous mature pecan trees and it’s just beautiful. It would be perfect were it not for the occasional road noise from Highway 90, and we were camping pretty far away. Not the owners fault obviously. He was a tremendous host; this place is a 9.5/10 with the only flaw keeping it from perfection being the occasional road noise.

The camp is exactly what we needed! As we had several large dogs with us, it allowed our dogs to have the space and privacy that we needed as well as a nice peaceful vacation. Having the electricity there was very helpful! It was quiet and peaceful, and even though we had to move the trailer to dump and fill up water, it was still what we were looking for! And everything was there on site. Our host page was responsive and helpful! Would definitely stay again.

My friends and I had such a great time camping here! The view of the river was beautiful, we could birdwatch from our campsite (barred owl, red shouldered hawk, king fisher, great egret, red-bellied woodpecker), the bathroom, dish washing, and shower facilities were extremely well stocked and clean, we were given free recently felled wood to burn, we loved getting cozy by the large fire pit - it had foot rests and a surface for resting our stuff! Bridget was the most attentive and sweet host; she checked on us before we arrived, she immediately answered my questions about a fire ban, she visited after we got settled, she brought us a can opener when we forgot one, she checked on us when she was worried our neighbors might be too noisy (they weren’t). The only thing we didn’t love was how many ants were on the ground, but that 1. Comes with the territory of living in Texas and 2. Is a hard thing for any landowner to fix. Just make sure you wear socks and bug spray to prevent any bites! My friends and I agree that we found a new spot to add to our regular camping rotation, and we can’t wait to come back :-)

. These are unique camping spots along the Guadalupe River. I didn’t exactly understand how unique until I started getting feedback from my campers. The surrounding scenery will lower your blood pressure and do wonders to let you reconnect with nature. Sit back and close your eyes late in the evening and listen to all the wildlife talking to each other. There is faint traffic noise from 90A about a 1/3 of a mile away but it calms down after 7 or so. Currently no amenities but I am in the plans for some portable bathrooms. Please be prepared to cover all your bathroom and cooking needs. I do have some good clean well water from a faucet on the way into the campgrounds. Campfires are permitted. There is a convenience store (Diamond A) with clean bathrooms and a great bbq just 5 miles to the west on 90A and a Walmart and HEB 10 miles to the east on 90A. (Both Diamond A and Walmart sell fishing licenses if you need one. Dogs are allowed at sites 3 and 4 but not at 1 or 2 where my livestock guardian dogs have access to. No matter the size or temperament of your pets you are always expected to have them under your control at ALL times. I have very small livestock in the area frequently I am almost always on the property and try to have my phone with me while campers are on site, just let me know what you need and I will do what I can to accommodate you. There are wildflowers all over the property; especially in the spring time. We have seen deer grazing on the property and some travelers have found fossils and arrowheads (no guarantees of course). The best camping in Palmetto State Park, TX guide

About

You’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve been transported to a tropical jungle at this small gem of a park in Central Texas, named for the dwarf palmetto trees found throughout. Several easy trails allow even families with kids to explore the swampy landscape with lush tropical plants, wildlife, and historic buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The winding San Marcos River and the 4-acre Oxbow Lake offer options for water play, including swimming, tubing, paddling, boating, and fishing. The Palmetto Campground offers 37 sites with fire rings, picnic tables, and some sites with water and/or electric hookups, plus a cabin and group site.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. Plan to make peak-season reservations as soon as possible, especially with so few sites available. The cabin and campsites can be reserved up to five months in advance while the group camp can be reserved up to 12 months in advance. 
  2. If you don’t have a reservation, arrive at the park first thing in the morning to grab unreserved sites that might be available for walk-ups.
  3. If your plans are flexible, visit during the week or non-holiday periods. 

When to go

Peak season is from March to November, when the park will be at its most crowded. Expect hot and humid weather in summer, when a dip in the river or lake will be the most refreshing. Visit in spring or fall to see migratory birds. Be sure to check the weather before confirming plans, as rain storms can cause the San Marcos River to flood.

Know before you go

  • The park rents kayaks, standup paddleboards, and bikes.
  • Several facilities are wheelchair-accessible, including the pavilion, cabin, and the group camping site.
  • Fishing licenses are not required if fishing from shore, but are required if fishing from a boat.
  • Bring binoculars for birdwatching. The park is part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail, with more than 240 species.
  • Closed toe shoes are a good idea, as snakes, including venomous rattlesnakes, can be found in the park.
  • Fires are permitted in fire rings only. Bring your own firewood or purchase from the camp store, as gathering firewood in the park is prohibited.
  • Pets are allowed in the park but not inside any buildings, including the camping cabin.

Great park to see handy work of the CCC, aside from being a lush and tropical adventure. We were there in the spring, when it was rainy and overcast. The park was green and lively, even the water was covered in either tiny water plants or algae? it was beautiful, whatever it was. Several hiking trails, fishing and camping ( of course). Look out for dinosaurs.... or snakes!

Palmetto is pretty centrally located only two hours from Houston and an hour from San Antonio & Austin. Best time to go is probably the spring where there is plenty of water in the creeks and plenty of green!

If you go here be sure to check out the Palmetto Interpretive Trail. It's a very short trail but you feel like you're walking through the time of the dinosaurs.
